Tyler Burkhart’s decade of DIY

In an industry governed by record deals and algorithmic playlists, Tyler Burkhart is a truly independent artist. The Landisville native and prolific singer-songwriter has been writing and recording music for a little more than a decade, during which time he’s garnered a global following, hundreds of thousands of online listeners and an expansive discography. But Burkhart’s music has never been released under a label - and it isn’t even his main career.

but he discovered other genres as he grew older and shared music with friends. It wasn’t until Burkhart received a microphone as a Christmas gift from his brother that he realized he could start recording his own music. Burkhart started recording in GarageBand, learning the basics from his friend and bandmate Mike O’Hara.

“I want to do it in a way that feels true to me; I don’t want to compromise.”

Burkhart started guitar lessons when he was 10 years old, but he connected with music only as a listener during his younger years. At first, Burkhart exclusively listened to Christian rock bands and CDs that his parents owned,

After graduating from Hempfield High School in 2007, Burkhart attended Millersville University, where he would eventually earn a master’s degree in social work in 2016. But as an undergraduate student who commuted from Landisville, Burkhart began to question his path. Feeling lost and unsure of what he wanted, Burkhart started pouring himself into writing and recording music with the microphone his brother

If you walk into the headquarters of United Disabilities Services (UDS), located at 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, you’ll find more than a few reasons that dogs are commonly referred to as man’s best friend.

The nonprofit organization provides highly trained service dogs for clients throughout Lancaster County and its surrounding areas, and each UDS dog is equipped with a special skillset

to meet its owner’s needs.

In early January, an office on the second floor of UDS’ main building was temporarily converted into a kennel for a litter of young golden Labs. The six puppies were less than 3 months old and, like all new arrivals at UDS, adorable but unruly.

After a 22-month training program, each dog will be obedient enough to accomplish tasks such as opening a door and picking up a TV remote from the floor. Outside the room of puppies, UDS

Tina Borchert of Millersville likes to weave humor into her paintings, but in a way that doesn’t interfere with the sincerity of her subject matter.

The Millersville University graduate’s passion for painting started when she was a child, and although Borchert has greatly expanded her arsenal of techniques and skills since then, her work retains a childlike sincerity and candid humor.

Borchert grew up in Honesdale, a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. As a young child,

volunteer Linda Rineer worked with CJ, a black Lab that is almost ready to be paired with a client. While a chorus of yelping and whining echoed from the temporary kennel, Rineer praised and encouraged CJ as he pulled a walker and opened doors on command.

“The key to successfully training a dog is food, food and more food,” said Rineer, a resident of the Buck who frequently travels to UDS’ facility to assist with training. “A lot of people think (service dogs) are working, but for them, it’s like playing ball all day.”

UDS service dogs specialize in different areas, and each canine is matched with a job that complements its personality traits and strengths. Some dogs may have a calming presence that can help anxious children feel more comfortable in school, and others are perceptive enough to recognize the early signs of a traumatic flashback and rush to their owners’ side. Rineer said the fourth UDS dog she helped train was able to fetch

bottles of water from the refrigerator for a client with mobility restrictions. The dog was even able to take the empty bottles to the recycling bin after the owner was finished.

In recent years, UDS has broadened its service area to include clients within five hours of Lancaster County. The number of local school districts requesting a service dog has steadily increased as well, and UDS dogs currently serve nearly every school district in the county.

Jennifer King, a member of the UDS service dog ambassador team, said many teachers testify that service dogs have reached students in ways no school staff member was able. “It’s the power of a wagging tail and a wet nose,” King said. UDS relies on sponsorships and donations from the community to sustain its service dog programs. Each dog requires an investment upward of $25,000 to cover the cost of coaching and food during the 22-month training period, and

financial support from individuals and businesses allows UDS to lessen the cost of acquiring a dog for clients.

UDS will hold its annual bingo fundraiser on Sunday, March 9, at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The organization is always accepting volunteers who wish to help with events and training sessions.

she spent a lot of her time around her retired grandmother, who painted for several hours each day. Borchert recalled fondly watching her grandmother paint flowers, and she became enamored with paintbrushes, canvases and anything that had to do with making art. “My mom got me one of those easels that was half chalkboard, half whiteboard with a roll of paper you could pull down,” said Borchert with a smile. “I eventually took a lot of art classes in middle school and high school, and it just felt like the path I was on.”

Although Borchert already felt called to a career as an artist when she was in high school, she didn’t consider it a viable path for the future. Borchert planned to study English in college with the eventual goal of teaching English as a Second Language. In 2019, Borchert made

a last-minute decision to change her major before she started her first year of classes at Millersville University. But her doubts about pursuing a career as an artist were persistent, so Borchert compromised and decided to major in art education. During her sophomore year, Borchert changed her major to fine arts. “I realized that I just wanted to make art. I didn’t want to teach it; I was only interested in the craft and making part of it,” she explained.

Borchert credits Millersville University’s frequent guest artists and shows in the Eckert Art Gallery with introducing her to fresh perspectives from outside the school. She prefers to work with paint, and her subject matter typically incorporates things that she finds funny or absurd. One of Borchert’s paintings, titled “A Jar Full of Clown

Noses,” depicts the odd combination of a clown and specific food items. “I was exploring food - specifically old, canned food and their design - and I thought things like Spam and Vienna sausages looked funny,” said Borchert. The title suggests that, despite its appearance at first glance, the jar in the painting may not actually be filled with maraschino cherries.

Although Borchert’s artistic humor is influenced by her affinity for the absurd, each of her paintings is earnest and heartfelt. There are no complex layers to dissect or grand philosophical declaration hidden in the background; Borchert finds a can of Spam sitting next to a clown doll a funny sight, and her work consistently weaves in elements of silly but wholesome comedy. One of Borchert’s other paintings depicts the front of

local Asian restaurant Ginmiya. At first glance, the piece seems to be a random and absurd choice of subject matter, but Ginmiya is one of Borchert’s favorite dinner spots, and the painting captures the warmth and comfortability it provides her.

Another one of Borchert’s paintings is an adaptation of the famous painting “Madonna and Child,” but showcasing both subjects as wearing tomatoes on their heads. The painting was featured as a selected juror piece in “Embodied Emotions,” a show that was held at Lancaster Art Vault in downtown Lancaster until mid-January. Borchert rents a space in Lancaster Art Vault’s WithDRAWal Room, a membership-based, collaborative space for artists to share as they create.

Applicants sought for business scholarship

The Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) is seeking applicants for $750 business scholarships. The scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors in the Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, Pequea Valley, and Penn Manor school districts, including students in the area who are homeschooled. This scholarship is designed for students who are passionate

about business ownership, and its purpose is to aid those with entrepreneurial goals as they start and grow their own businesses. Higher education is not required. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

Funds can be used to cover essential startup expenses, including purchasing necessary equipment, attorney fees for business formation, licensing

fees, web design, educational expenses associated with furthering one’s education in a chosen field, and expenses related to participation in an apprenticeship program.

Applications will be made anonymous and shared with the SLCCC’s scholarship committee for final determination of the winners. The school districts will be notified of the winners by

Thursday, May 1. Recipients will be announced at the schools’ awards ceremonies. Recipients will also be invited to attend the SLCCC’s June member meeting to be recognized and receive their scholarship funds.

The application deadline is Tuesday, April 15. For more details, visit www.southenlan casterchamber.org and scroll down to “Chamber Scholarships.”

had gifted to him. “I was probably feeling pretty depressed,” said Burkhart. “I was going to college, but I wasn’t hyped about it. It was something I could do that I felt good about.”

Burkhart released a handful of EPs and an album titled Freaking Out before putting out his first official record, “Sweet Spell,” in 2015. The 11-track debut is a melancholic but graceful ode to Burkhart’s introspective days living in the suburbs, laying the foundation of his dreamy and graceful sound. Burkhart’s sophomore album, “Marianne,” builds upon his first album’s wistful mood with evocative melodies and earnest lyrics that melt between your headphones and ears as you listen.

“I’m a visual person, so I’ve always imagined reaching for something in music,” Burkhart said. “I feel like that’s always been what I’ve felt when I listen to music - this sort of longing and trying to break through.”

Since the release of “Sweet Spell,” Burkhart has nurtured an impressively long discography, including his latest release, “Every night and all,” which dropped in December. Burkhart’s more recent material features a few traits that distinguish it from his early releases, but his sound and creative approach has mostly stayed the same. Similar to the records that preceded it, “Every

night and all” sounds sharper than “Sweet Spell” or “Marianne,” both of which Burkhart recorded entirely in GarageBand with minimal knowledge of recording techniques.

Although Burkhart has become more knowledgeable about music production through the years and often records in a professional studio, he still prefers to track certain instruments and parts of songs in the DIY setting he started in. “In my experience, trying to perfect production usually gets in the way of me actually making things,” Burkhart said. “When I listen to the early stuff, I can hear what I didn’t know. But I still like it, and people connected with it.” Burkhart added that while recording his first few albums, he would often ditch the microphone altogether and place his laptop in front of an instrument to record.

In the same way Burkhart writes and records by his own rules, he has never been represented by a label or a booking agency, which he credits as one of the main reasons his creative direction has remained as uncompromised after a decade. “The more I do it myself, the less I want to do it with anyone else,” said Burkhart. “I want to do it in a way that feels true to me; I don’t want to compromise.”

Oasis plans Bible studies

Oasis Women’s Ministry of Pennsylvania will offer a winter session of Bible studies beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The group invites all women in the community to gather on Wednesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence.

Three choices of study are available. “Revelation: Eternal King, Everlasting Kingdom” by Jen Wilkin includes a workbook and weekly videos that explore the culmination of God’s story in the last book of the Bible. This study will meet for 12 weeks and conclude on April 16.

In addition, there are two six-week studies, which will conclude on March 5. “Forgiving What You Can’t Forget” by Lysa TerKeurst is a book study that addresses the process of forgiveness from a biblical perspective. “1 Peter: Holy Living in a Hostile World” will use the Bible as text along with in-depth study methods to understand Peter’s message and apply it to daily life.

Participants should bring their own Bible and notebook. Workbooks, if applicable, will be available to purchase at the first meeting.

The intention of Oasis is to provide a restful place for women to pause in the midst of life’s journey and connect with God and with one another. Each meeting begins with coffee and breakfast refreshments followed by worship in music and then

the Bible studies. All of the studies prioritize small group discussion for learning together and growing friendships. A prayer group is also available.

Oasis includes a children’s ministry, which provides supervision, snacks, crafts, and Bible stories for nursery, preschool, and homeschooled students. A freewill offering will be received each week.

In the case of wintry weather, Oasis will follow Solanco School District’s schedule. If the school district has a closing or delay, Oasis will not meet. The session calendar will be extended to make up for any missed weeks.

Preregistration is encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome at any time. For more information or to preregister, visit www.oasis women.org or call or text Gail at 717-799-8583.

Partnership will provide LMS students education options

While we want the best for them, sometimes all we can do for our children is give them opportunities. What they do with those opportunities and how they take advantage of them is really up to them.

Providing kids with opportunities is a key element of the educational process. It’s also what the new partnership between Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) and Millersville University is all about.

“The purpose is to provide opportunities for kids,” said Kirk Benner, who’s been LMS’ high school principal for three years. “When a student comes to Lancaster Mennonite, no matter where their future is going to lead them, there are multiple opportunities here. It comes down to opportunities, and kids knowing we’re here for them and what makes sense for them.”

LMS and Millersville University recently entered into a partnership that will allow LMS juniors and seniors to take MU classes, either in person or online, and earn college credits. As part of the agreement, the LMS students will receive a significant reduction in their tuition fees for those courses.

“We are very pleased that Lancaster Mennonite High School students will now have a low-cost opportunity to earn high school and college credits simultaneously through our dual enrollment program,” said Douglas Zander, Millersville University’s associate

vice president of enrollment management and dean of admissions.

“We appreciate the strong preparation already offered by the high school, and this helps provide their students a seamless transition to higher education.”

“The more we can offer kids and families, the better,” said Benner. “One of our more recent goals is to become involved with community-based institutions like Millersville. We’re looking to be engaged in the community. Millersville is right in our own backyard, and a lot of our teachers went to Millersville.

This allows students to start their college careers in high school.”

There are currently 534 students in prekindergarten through grade 12 enrolled at LMS, including 60 juniors and 55 seniors. Many of those upperclassmen will likely pursue postsecondary educations at a college or other institution, and the new partnership can give them a head start.

“I’d say there are a handful of students who will take advantage of this opportunity,” said Benner. “Most of our students who are planning to go on to college take Advanced Placement classes. Most kids are walking out of here with some sort of college credit.”

Last year, LMS entered into a dual enrollment partnership with Messiah University. The school has also enjoyed a similar agreement with Eastern Mennonite University for about eight years now.

“There is a reasonable limit,” said Benner. “(The kids) are still fulltime high school students. They

still have full-time high school workloads, and we still want them to engage in extracurricular activities. We don’t want to overburden them. In two years, they could earn a semester’s worth of college credits.”

“When we make these decisions, we really take into account what’s in the best interest of the students,” said Benner. “One of the beautiful things is that our counselors know the kids, know them well, and they can put together these options and individualize plans for them.”

Most of the college credits earned by LMS juniors and seniors at Millersville University are transferrable to other colleges and institutions.

“We are excited for this partnership with Millersville Univerisity, a local university,” said Benner. “We’re glad to offer opportunities for our students that benefit them and reinforce our student-centered approach to learning. We look forward to continuing our collab -

oration with Millersville University and other local partners.”
