Church to hold mental health support groups

Millersville Community Church is providing safe spaces to work on one’s mental health through its Empowered by Grace ministry.

“Empowered by Grace is kind of the umbrella name for the mental health care ministries Kelly Dennis was inspired to begin,” said Bruce Heydt, one of the team leaders.

Dennis, the coordinator of the church’s mental health management team, first developed Living Grace, a program for adults who are struggling.

“We started holding mental health support groups about three years ago,” Dennis said. “We’ve done five groups of

Living Grace. Then we decided there was such a call for it, we wanted to start a ministry that would include education and information and reduce the stigma that goes along with mental health.”

That is the impetus for two more programs, Redefine Grace, for 16- to 23-year-olds who are struggling, and Family Grace, for caregivers, loved ones, and friends of those who are struggling.

“We’re branching out now,” Heydt said. “The difference is Living Grace is for adults. Redefine Grace is for teens and youth. I think the issues those two groups deal with are kind of the same, but the triggers are a little different. Peer pressure probably has a lot more to do with the teens.

So we’re kind of branching out because we found there’s a great deal of interest, both within our own church and from members of the community.”

Family Grace will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Mondays starting Feb. 24, Redefine Grace will gather from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting Feb. 25, and Living Grace will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Feb. 26. All three options are 10-week programs.

Dennis has a Master of Science in clinical psychology from Millersville University, is licensed as a professional counselor, and is a member of the American Counseling Association and a Diplomat with the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies.

“The Trivia Guy” is on a mission to find out how much you know.

Nicholas Gallagher hosts a weekly trivia game at the Sugar Bowl in Millersville, 9 Normal Ave.

The trivia game is called “How Much Do You Know?” and is held each Monday starting at 7 p.m.

“You just show up, you grab a team sheet and a pen, you just have fun,” Gallagher said. “Each week, it’s a themed game. ... Then the top team in each game

Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S)

High School hosted some of the area’s top high school musicians during the District 7 South Band Festival on Jan. 24 and 25.

Musicians and band directors representing 38 schools in Lancaster, York, and Adams counties participated in the two-day festival, which culminated with a concert on Saturday afternoon, led by guest conductor Tonya

Mitchell-Spradlin, a director of wind band studies and assistant professor of music at Penn State University.

L-S band director Larry Royer, who has been teaching for 31 years, the last 22 also as band director, said the school has hosted the district orchestra in 2019 and all-state groups, but this is the first time it has hosted the District 7 South Band Festival.

“It’s always a good thing to do,”

earns a prize that reflects that theme.” For example, the winning team in the recent Pokémonthemed game received an Eevee plush.

Gallagher said the theme ties into significant occasions. There was a video game theme when Nintendo was announcing a new console, and the theme was “The Office” when the television show was being relaunched on Peacock.

There is a total of 44 questions, 11 in each of the four rounds, with the rounds getting progressively more difficult.

“The first round is easy,” said Gallagher. “The second round is mid. The third round is hard, and the fourth round is brutal. Recently a lot of teams are getting better and better, so I need to up my game.”

Gallagher, who was born in Allentown but raised in Lancaster County, hosted his first game at the

Sugar Bowl in March 2023.

He used to go into the Sugar Bowl and ask questions left over from other trivia games he had hosted at a different location.

“They would know me as ‘The Trivia Guy,’” said Gallagher. Sugar Bowl co-owner Petros Karpouzis asked if Gallagher would be interested in hosting a trivia game. “It’s been going strong for nearly two years,” Gallagher said. “I am genuinely excited. We are building a good rapport with Millersville University students and locals. It was a privilege to make it a more consistent (occurrence).”

Gallagher is looking to branch out. He plans to hold test games at Pasta Plus on Columbia Avenue in Lancaster on Mondays, Feb. 6 and 13, and hold weekly games there Thursdays at 6 p.m. if the test games are successful.

Gallagher researches all of the

questions. “Part of my week is spent researching a number of topics via visiting local libraries, going online, checking sources twice over because I want to make sure things are as accurate as possible,” he said.

“Usually I am not satisfied with a question until I have three sources verifying the answer.” The night before the game, he validates the information to make sure it is up to date.

Born in Allentown, Gallagher has lived in the Lancaster area for most of his life. “I am the oldest son of three to a single mom (Teresa), who inspired me to pursue faith in Jesus and a love of knowledge and discernment,” Gallagher said.

“She raised me on Bible study and Jeopardy!”

Gallagher said “How Much Do You Know?” is a faith-based and family-friendly alternative to most bar trivia games. “I don’t shy away

talking about my personal faith before or after a game,” Gallagher said. “That way, I have an opportunity to talk to players about what they believe in and talk to them about what their aspirations are for the future.”

Entire families can participate in the trivia games. Gallagher said he is motivated by a quote in Alex Trebek’s book “The Answer Is…”: “Knowledge is the accumulation of what you know. Wisdom is applying what you know to further the goals of others.”

Gallagher noted he plans on hosting trivia nights for “as long as I’m here on this Earth.”

“Ideally, I’d like to turn it into a full-on part-time business that I can pay bills with down the line,” Gallagher said. “For now, it’s lots of fun and it’s a means of really connecting with those around me who sometimes feel they are neglected because maybe their knowledge is too niche, or they don’t feel seen in how they see things around them. I try to emphasize, one, you’re seen; two, you’re cared for; three, let’s talk.”

He ends each trivia night with the same sendoff: “Stay curious, stay safe, have fun, and God bless.” scan this code for more local news townlively.com

Support groups

Empowered by Grace is designed to be peer-led, following the curriculum established by Grace Alliance.

Dennis will lead an educational opportunity for team leaders to provide a brief introduction to mental disorders and tell them what they might encounter in groups and how to handle it.

Heydt and Sharon McIlhenney are the Living Grace support group leaders.

McIlhenney took part in a Living Grace group 18 months ago. “I really felt like I benefited from it, and I’m looking forward to being a part of the group again, helping Bruce lead the group,” she said.

Dennis and Scott Donaldson will lead Redefine Grace, and Carol Bond and Sherry Mull will guide the discussions for Family Grace.

“What we aren’t is a substitute for professional, clinical care,” said Heydt. “We’re a supplement for that. ... Sometimes when you need a shoulder to cry on, a peer could be of more comfort than perhaps maybe a professional, and it’s easier for some people to open up to that sort of person. That’s how we fit in.”

Empowered by Grace seeks a balance between science and faith.

“There are two elements here, and I think too often we isolate one or the other,” Heydt said. “This program recognizes the need for medication and the science and the theory behind treating people with mental challenges. But also there is a role faith could play.”

Heydt, a former lay pastor at Millersville Community Church, can guide people through the spiritual aspects. “We can help them learn how faith could be an important tool in the toolbox,” he explained.

Everyone is welcome to attend the support group sessions, and there is no fee. “Our groups have

been made up by some folks who already knew each other because they do attend here, but also people from the community,”

Heydt said.

“I started handing out anonymous surveys for feedback to find out how we can make the group better,” Dennis shared. “One of the consistent things that people say is that it’s a safe place and they didn’t feel judged. They really felt like this was a place where they could talk about all this stuff and people tried to understand.”

“That’s really the goal, to reduce the stigma and the judgment people feel about their mental illness so they’re not afraid to get treatment,” Heydt said. “We’re going to provide an ear and some understanding and some compassion, so they feel like they’re not alone.”

“This program is not just for someone who has been diagnosed with clinical depression or those kinds of things,” Heydt continued. “Who among us doesn’t go through periods of depression or doesn’t struggle with a sense of grief over loss? This could be a benefit to you no matter where you are.”

“We can provide tools for people,” Dennis noted. “That’s where faith comes in, too. Faith is one of the tools. I’ve been really impressed by people from the community, not church members, who come in and talk about their own personal faith and how important it is to them. The program brings Scripture into it, and the people respond to that. It’s one of the most powerful tools, I’ve found.”

Millersville Community Church is located at 163 W. Frederick St. For more information about the mental health support groups, contact Dennis at 717-951-2266 or kelly@kellyfdennis.com.

Talk to focus on one-room school

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a slideshow presentation on “Garfield School - From Community Resource to Residence” when it meets on Saturday, Feb. 8. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m. This is the second of three presentations devoted to one-room schools that MAHS has scheduled for the first three months of 2025. It will be presented at 9 a.m. in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive.

The speaker will be history buff and researcher Kelly Williams, owner of the restored Garfield one-room school located near Mount Joy. Williams will outline the history of the school when it was part of the Rapho school district, from 1884 to 1950; its decline after its use as a school; and its authentic interior restoration as a schoolroom that became the Williamses’ home for the past 20 years.

Available for purchase at the meeting will be copies of two books. One is Mary Virginia “Ginger” Shelley’s 190-page volume titled “Lancaster County’s One-Room Schoolhouses and the History of the Common School Movement,” which received the 2016 Award for Scholarship and Artistry from the Country School Association of America and features the Garfield School on its cover. The other book is “The Diaries

of Peter C. Hiller, Conestoga, Pennsylvania, 1875-1898,” a reflection by Hiller on the life and times in Conestoga during the late 1800s when he was a one-room school teacher in Pequea and Conestoga townships.

Williams was employed by Armstrong World Industries for 33 years as a software developer and testing engineer, and he now spends time working on steam cars and conducting research on individual surviving automobiles produced from 1900 to 1915. A veteran of the U.S. military, he grew up in Elizabethtown and attended Elizabethtown College, where he earned a degree in computer science.

Although admission is free, donations will be accepted. For more details, contact one of the co-chairs: Phil Gerber, MAHS president, at 717-872-8837 before noon or at pge8507@ aol.com or Kathy Brabson, MAHS secretary, at 717-6825903 or at kathybrabson @comcast.net.

said Royer, a 1990 Lampeter-Strasburg graduate. “It lets people see what we have and see our facilities, what we offer and how we support music.”

School band directors held a business meeting during the Friday of the festival and judged auditions of the 154 band members who were vying to move to the next level. The state is divided into 12 districts and then six regions.

Band rehearsal was held Friday afternoon and again Saturday morning leading up to the concert.

Royer said the musicians first auditioned for the festival back in December. “They learn and perform some pretty high-level repertoire to get into this group,” Royer said. “Then to move into the next group, they audition on material from this concert.”

The Lampeter-Strasburg High School musicians who qualified for the festival were Maya Coon, bass clarinet; Katerina Geiter, clarinet; Rosalie Glick, horn; Isabel Henry, oboe; Sophia Leister, flute; Elizabeth Rhinier, tuba; Alex Ruhl, trumpet; Katie Sanborn, flute; and Cole Shehan, trumpet.

“I think it’s great to be exposed to this,” Royer said. “It’s not too much about the competition for me. It’s seeing other kids do what they do, and they come together and make

a product is really outstanding. To be exposed to that and hopefully bring some of that back here to our program is always really good.”

Hempfield High School was represented by Ella Astree, bassoon; Amalia Gelbart, oboe; Carter Guengerich, percussion; Noelle Hooper, flute; Spencer Stein, baritone; Lii Stephens, horn; Colin Towbridge, bari sax; Jude Valle, tuba; and Sophia Wilson, oboe.

“I think there are two things about the experience that are really cool,” Hempfield band director Matt Ceresini said. “The first thing is the kids really enjoy meeting the other kids. And often kids who make this as a freshman or sophomore will make the festival multiple years, so they get to reconnect with those kids, but infrequently. It’s a cool way to check in on what is going

on other places. And the other thing is, musically, the groups are always outstanding. It gives them a different level of musicianship. In our ensembles, they’re serving as leaders almost all the time. Here, everybody is of that level.”

The experience gained by band members at the festival improves the quality of the entire band. “One of the things we say in our band is there are a lot of ways to be great,” said Ceresini. “One of the things we do, is when students come back, we ask them to share something they learned that we don’t do that we could incorporate. It could be something the conductors do, something they pick up from other students. There are a lot of great ways to do things.”

Solanco High School was represented by sophomores Benjamin

Ginter, clarinet, and Mackenzie Landis, flute.

“They are both so accomplished even though they’re so young,” Solanco band director Scott Weyman said. “They’ve made it to the district PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) level, and then they got the opportunity to reaudition for a chance to go to regionals, on the way to all-states potentially. So for them, it’s a big step in their development. It’s a very competitive process. Even making it to the district ensemble is quite a feather in your cap. The future looks really bright for them.”

Penn Manor High School musicians Jordan Chen, flute; Myra Musser, flute; and Sandra Walker, horn, also participated in the festival.

Dayspring schedules open house

Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soon-to-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to an open house on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville.

The event will feature A Very Hungry Caterpillar Valentine’s party that will focus on 1 Corinthians 16:14, “Do everything in love.” Parents will meet teachers and learn the distinctives of the Principle Approach, a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and the method of education used at Dayspring. The station-centered event will allow visitors to see the way Dayspring teaches math, science/STEM, the Bible, reading, and more.

The preschool program is appropriate for children who turn 3 years old by Sept. 1 and lays the foundation for a Principle Approach education. This program offers an introduction to the alphabet, and students learn about a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet; this course of study culminates with Bible Character Day, complete with costumes. Age-appropriate history, science, literature, and math lessons are woven together and rooted in God’s Word. Guided free play incorporates principles of self-government, order, and unity. Circle time incorporates songs, the calendar, weather, colors, and Bible stories. Daily art projects incorporate a history, science, Bible, and literature focus. Preschool students attend class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 11 a.m.

The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of creation.

The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old or are young 6-year-olds at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and

structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program and the Really Great Reading phonics program are introduced at this level. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation for beginning to read; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten.

The preschool, prekindergarten, and kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what students learn in the classroom. In all programs, the seeds of scholarship are sown in every academic subject to inspire a love of learning and appreciation for God’s hand in all the children do.
