Hickey hired as Millersville University’s deputy police chief

Deputy Chief William Hickey isn’t walking a beat, but he can walk to work.

Hickey, a Millersville resident, started his new position in early January, working alongside outgoing Deputy Chief Howard Bauman for four weeks. Bauman retired on Jan. 31, and Hickey officially took over.

Hickey had just two days off between jobs after retiring from the Lancaster City Bureau of Police following 25 years of service. “It was a very good career,” he said.

During his time in the city, Hickey worked under current Millersville University Chief Pete Anders, who retired from the Lancaster force after working as captain of the patrol division.

“When I knew the (Millersville deputy chief) position was going to become available, I put in for the job as soon as it was announced by the university,” said Hickey. “Working with Pete before, I knew he was an excellent police officer and a good boss. I knew working for him would be ideal for me and be an easy transition.”

Hickey has resided in the area for more than 20 years. “I’ve always enjoyed the Millersville area,” he said. “My kids went to Penn Manor schools. I thought it would be nice bringing my 25 years of experience in Lancaster and lending it to the university community and the department here.”

Millersville University’s police force includes 12 officers and one cadet who is attending the police academy. Hickey’s responsibility

Unsurprisingly, there are drastic differences between working in a city and working on a university campus. “It’s a much smaller footprint compared to working 25 years in the city,” Hickey said. “You’re confined to the university properties. Dealing with that geographical restriction is a little strange.”

Hickey is now a state employee working for the commonwealth and university and said he is “learning the ins and outs of that

For people facing health hardships, it can be easy to get discouraged. Thanks to one Lancaster County nonprofit, hope and help are available.

Ten years ago, Carol Heth dreamed up the idea for Lancaster County Field of Hope, which raises funds for up to six beneficiaries each year to provide financial support for their medical care. Recipients of the funds must live in Lancaster County, but otherwise, the criteria for consideration are unrestricted.

Lancaster County Field of Hope will hold its annual Night of Hope event on Saturday, April 12, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia.

“This is the night we announce our six recipients for the year, and if they are able to come, they are there as well,” said Heth. “We have music, food and lots of fun.”

Wife-and-husband duo

Dorothy and Phil Smith of Salunga will have the first show they’ve written performed by an official theater organization for the first time when the Promise Players perform its spring musical in March.

The Smiths and their son, C.J., teamed to pen “Muddled Memories: A Bible Journey,” a family-friendly, staged musical with a lighthearted look at Bible memories with something seriously muddled in the middle, including a monkey, an emu, and

a super man.

Dorothy, the show’s director, wrote the dialogue and contributed some of the lyrics. Phil, the musical director, and C.J., a professional musician who now lives in Allentown, wrote the music and the majority of the lyrics.

“Probably my favorite thing musically is directing and/or hearing something I’ve composed being performed. That is a big joy,” said Phil, who is also the director of the Bainbridge Band and writes some arrangements for that group.

In addition to the Night of Hope, the organization holds an annual golf tournament to raise funds, as well as a benefit dinner. The golf tournament will be held on Friday, July 18, at Crossgates Golf Club in Millersville. The dinner, which is the initial fundraising event that kicked off the formation of the nonprofit, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, at Heth’s farm in Columbia.

People who are interested in being a Field of Hope beneficiary may apply annually between Oct. 15 and Dec. 15. In January, the nominator gives a presentation to the board with information about each potential recipient, and the board votes.

“We support up to six individuals each year,” Heth said, noting that choosing the recipients is often difficult. “We sometimes have

Other than a small amount of money kept for working capital to fund future events, all proceeds raised by Lancaster County Field of Hope’s events directly benefit that year’s recipients.

Heth added that costs are kept low for the Night of Hope as the use of the facility and all food, beverages and auction items are donated.

Donations are still being sought for auction items, and volunteers are always needed for the

organization’s events. To learn more, email lancofieldofhope@gmail .com or visit www.lanco fieldofhope.com.

Describing the Night of Hope, Heth said, “It’s just a fun night of helping others. The music is always good, the food’s fantastic, and the drinks are great.”

Bingo will support Columbia Dream Center

The success of the Columbia Dream Center’s annual bingo event is the perfect example of being in the right place at the right time.

As Cheryl Schmidt, fundraising coordinator, explained, she was attending an event in 2022 when she struck up a conversation with a woman about the event’s beneficiary.

“It turned out that her daughter worked for the Dream Center, and she was very passionate about helping the cause,” Schmidt recalled. “She mentioned they would like to do a bingo, but no one had the knowledge of how to organize one. As it turned out, I had already successfully organized and ran many bingos and events for other nonprofits and volunteered to meet with them and help them.”

The Columbia Dream Center’s first bingo was held in 2023, and each year, the event has grown in scope and size.

The third annual Columbia Dream Center Bingo will be held on Saturday, March 29, at the Knights of Columbus, 1575 New Danville Pike, Lancaster. Doors will open at 11 a.m., and bingo will begin at 1 p.m.

“There will be 20 games of regular bingo and four special games - sold separately - (giveaways) and bonus games,” shared Jenn Hollinger, outreach coordinator for the Columbia Dream Center. “Anyone who brings a donation of new socks or underwear for the clothing bank will be entered to win a prize.”

Bingo prizes will include designer handbags and Yeti products, along with some gift cards.

“We will also have some fun extras available in the way of ‘mystery eggs,’ a drawing for the first 75 tickets sold and some other surprises on the day of the event,” Schmidt said. “There will be 50-plus baskets and items on the (giveaway) table ranging from gift cards to baskets of items to handbags and wallets to fun activities. We have something for everyone!”

Attendees can also enjoy food and beverages while they play.

“The kitchen will be stocked with lots of homemade goodies: chicken corn soup, walking tacos, deli sandwiches, pulled pork, mac and cheese, fruit, veggies, snacks and lots of homemade desserts, so make sure to come hungry,” Schmidt recommended.

The event will support the Columbia Dream Center, located at 360 Locust St., Columbia, which provides shelter, food, clothing and additional services for those in need.

“The proceeds from the event

will be used for all of the services we provide here at Columbia Dream Center,” Hollinger remarked. “It will help purchase food, equipment and supplies for our food and shelter ministries, as well as pay utility bills and help maintain our building.” Each ticket sold will help provide lunch for 10 children over the summer, food for 30 families for a month or one and a half nights of food and shelter for one person, she said.

Hollinger noted that along with Schmidt, Maria Boomer has been instrumental in the event’s success.

Hollinger added that all giveaway prizes are donated by local businesses, and the organization is still seeking sponsors for handbags or Yeti items. For more information on donating or sponsoring, contact Boomer at dreamctrbingo @gmail.com.

Schmidt said the event is always well attended, and she encourages new people to come to this year’s bingo.

“If you enjoy playing bingo and having fun and a chance to go home with some amazing prizes, this is the event for you,” she said. “More than that, however, if you have a heart for helping others and a passion to give back, you will be supporting such an amazing cause that provides so much for so many on a sparse budget. We focus on providing desirable bingo prizes as well as a good variety of (giveaway drawings), specials and food at a fair price.”

Schmidt noted that the bingo is just one of many planned community events for the Dream Center.

“Our events continue to grow each year, and we will be having some other events coming in the future, so I encourage you to follow the Columbia Dream Center on Facebook to find out more,” she said.

All entrants to bingo must have a ticket. Children over the age of 10 may play bingo, but an adult must claim the prize.

Tickets may be purchased in advance for a discount. To purchase tickets, visit https://bit.ly/4hp13ox, Venmo @Cheryl-Schmidt-41 with an email for ticket confirmation or call 228-437-4876 for cash sales. Tickets will be available on the day of the event at the door if not sold out. For more information on the

“Muddled Memories: A Bible Journey” is a comedy featuring puns and plays on words, Dorothy said. “We take a series of Bible stories, and we muddle something in the middle,” she said. “We try to follow true to the message behind the Bible story, and we do emphasize that. It’s just in the acting out of it we twist some things.”

For example, the musical features Garden of Sweden instead of the Garden of Eden. “Rather than having people naked on stage and realize they’re naked, we pretend they’re in Sweden, and not realizing it’s cold until the apple is

eaten. Then they’re freezing,” Phil explained.

The group puts on two shows a year, a play in the fall and a musical in the spring. The productions traditionally raise money for a Christian nonprofit. This spring, the beneficiary is the Manheim Community Life Group’s Home on Ferdinand, a transitional living program designed to provide support for women and children currently facing homelessness.

“It always feels good,” Dorothy said. “We have benefited a number of nonprofits. They always are appreciative, and it’s always nice to give back to the community.”

The Promise Players group has been doing just that since Doreen Creighton founded it 25 years ago. Ken Hess was a member of the original troupe and is still active.

“I never thought I could act,” Hess said. “Never, ever, ever. That wasn’t on my radar. One

time they needed a Lazarus and asked if I would do it. The choir director at the church I was attending asked me to do it. I said I had never done anything like this before. He said, ‘Well, we’ll teach you.’ That was the beginning, and I fell in love with it. And I’m doing my 40th show this spring.”

Hess has seen the Promise Players come a long way. “I didn’t know much about the ministry until I started getting involved with it,” said Hess. “The original director (Creighton) wanted something that was not secular, that was all sacred, all religious, that you could have fun with it and a lot of comedy. And it had to have a message. It started very slowly, and it built and built and built. There were times where they were less than 50 people in the audience.”

“Muddled Memories: A Bible Journey” will be performed Thursday, March 20, to Sunday, March 23, and Thursday, March 27, to Sunday, March 30, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. Show times will be 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, and 2:30 p.m. Sundays.

16th ANNUAL DRIVE -THRU

“Policing is policing, but policing on a university campus has its own unique attributes,” said Hickey. “It’s busy but just a different busy. There is always something going on and always something to do, but there are not the same kind of incidents.”

“The big thing is parking,” Hickey said. “Parking is at a premium on the campus. We help when people need access to certain buildings. We help if there’s a graduate student who needs to get access to a building.”

Millersville officers work at home athletic events. That is another benefit to the job. “Getting back to a college campus has resparked my interest in

college sports, whether it’s basketball or lacrosse,” Hickey said. “I enjoy watching the games.”

Officers also assist on calls for medical emergencies.

“I’ve been very happy with getting to know the officers here within the department,” Hickey said. “It’s very much a community-oriented kind of workplace. We work hand in hand with a number of departments on the campus, whether it’s resident assistants or student life or student affairs.”

An essential part of the job remains the same no matter where you work. A productive police officer must be willing to converse with other people,

he said. “It’s the best part of any job in policing,” said Hickey, who enjoys spending time with his family, going for walks, and bicycling on local trails. “If you’re not a people person, you’re not going to be a successful police officer. You can’t do policing unless you can effectively interact with people.”

He has relished the opportunity to meet a variety of people involved with the university.

“That’s been great,” Hickey said. “Since the moment I got here, everybody I’ve come in contact with, the faculty, staff, students, administration, everybody has been extremely welcoming and accommodating.”

Korean group to perform concert

The Ewha Womans University College of Music will hold a “Giving Thanks” concert at First United Methodist Church (UMC), 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster, on Saturday, March 1, at 5 p.m. as part of the College of Music’s 100th anniversary celebrations. The concert will feature more than 70 musicians, a women’s choir, and a mix of Western classical and traditional Korean music.

The performance will honor the historical ties between Lancaster and Ewha. Henry Appenzeller, a missionary sent by First UMC, played a pivotal role in fostering education and cultural exchange between Korea and the U.S. His daughter Alice Appenzeller significantly contributed to Ewha’s development through her fundraising efforts, teaching, and leadership as the school’s president from 1922 to 1939. Today, Ewha remains one of the largest female schools and one of the most prestigious universities in South Korea.

Parking is available in a lot behind the First UMC building. For more information, visit www.engagegodfirst.org or call 717-394-7231.
