MMillersville Borough will recognize hometown heroes

illersville Borough will honor its hometown heroes by joining the nationwide trend of placing banners on light poles to recognize veterans.

“We’re certainly excited to join with the other municipalities that do this program,” said borough manager Rebecca DeSantis-Randall.

the first year of the program, the borough will install a maximum of 23 banners.

“The

veterans deserve to be honored for the sacrifices they made to serve our country.”

“We’re excited that the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs is recognizing municipalities that have Hometown Hero projects. We’re excited to be a part of a growing group.”

Banner orders will be accepted through Friday, April 4, on a first-come, first-served basis. For

The fee to order a banner covers the cost of the banner, the mounting kit, and pole attachment survey costs. Applications must include a photo of the service member to be included on the banner. DeSantis -Randall is encouraging people to send high-quality photos. “The better the picture, the better the banner,” she said.

Banners will be installed throughout Millersville Borough on or before Memorial Day, Monday, May 26. An honoree must live or have lived in Millersville Borough or be a relative to someone who lives in the

“It’s going to be the largest show we’ve had,” said Jeffrey Pretz, who is a member of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers.

The project’s genesis came when Millersville resident Julie Crnkovich attended a public meeting last fall and said, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we had the Hometown Hero project here in the borough?”

Crnkovich said she had thought

“I really thought Millersville was a perfect place for the banners,” Crnkovich said. She wanted to honor her father, Richard J. Frey, an Army veteran who died in 2019, and her uncle Kenneth Mann, 92, who now lives in California. The brothers lived in the borough.

“I’d like to plaster Millersville with the banners,” said Crnkovich. “The banners look great, and the veterans deserve to be honored for the sacri-

DeSantis-Randall said, “The borough had done a banner project with Millersville University a couple years back, so we are a little familiar with doing banners. But this was a new project for us.”

DeSantis-Randall, Crnkovich, and Giberson formed a committee to study the Hometown Hero project.

Crnkovich had a contact with a national organization, and the committee reached out to Columbia and Quarryville boroughs, which have Hometown Hero banners in their communities.

The committee worked with PPL

to get permits to use the poles. Millersville Borough can apply to use up to 25 poles a year from PPL. “We hope to keep adding 25 every year, assuming we get interest,” DeSantis-Randall said.

The first banners will be spread throughout the borough, including on Manor Avenue, Cottage Avenue, Charlotte Street, Landis Avenue, and Herr Avenue, DeSantis-Randall said. The banners are expected to last between three and five years. “Our hope is that when they start looking like they should come down, we will give them to whoever it was that applied for that banner,” said DeSantis-Randall. “Then we will give them an opportunity to do a new one, or we will open up that spot for somebody else.”

Based on early feedback, DeSantis-Randall is optimistic. “There’s been a lot of interest so far,” she said on Feb. 19. “We’ve only had the application process open since the last day of January. So far, we have nine banners submitted. We still have some spots left, but we’re really excited we have so many in the first few weeks. … We’re really hoping we get the word out and fill all 23.”

The Hometown Hero banners project is the latest way Millersville Borough is remembering its veterans. “It ties in nicely with the things the borough is already doing with the Veterans Day ceremony and veterans memorial at Freedom Memorial Park,” DeSantis-Randall said. In other news, DeSantis-Randall is encouraging people to sign up to rent the borough’s pavilions, gazebo, and ballfields. “The earlier the better,” she said. “The pavilions are a big draw. There are plenty of dates open, but spots fill up quickly.”

Registration forms are on the borough’s website.

kinds of carvings, as well.”

The featured guest carver will be Joe You, past president of Caricature Carvers of America. A retired dentist from California, You is regarded as a creative and accomplished caricature carver.

“People can come to purchase supplies for carving as well as carvings that are handmade by individuals who are there,” Pretz said. “They can also come for inspiration of a great hobby.”

Among the 60 exhibitors will be members of the Lancaster County WoodCarvers’ sister clubs, including the American National Cane Club (ANCC), a club that focuses on canes and walking sticks and meets monthly in Lancaster County; the Manheim Township WoodCarvers, a club that focuses on carving together and crafting Christmas ornaments for hospice and meets monthly in Lancaster County; the Conewago Carvers, a club that meets in East Berlin; the West Shore Woodcarvers, a club that is active in Mechanicsburg; the Yorkarvers, a club from York; the PA Delaware Valley Woodcarvers, a club from Bucks County; and the William Rush Woodcarvers, a club in Media. The Pennsylvania Gourd Society will present a display of its art with gourds.

There will be a free hands-on carving station for new carvers or those who just want to try carving. All supplies and tools will be available for use with basic safety and techniques shared. Instruction and guidance will be provided by club members. Each session will take about an hour and will start on the hour and on the half hour. At the end of the hour, most will leave with their carved project. Participants must be at least 18 years old, and everyone must sign a waiver to participate in a session. Original woodcarvings will be available for purchase from many of the artists and carvers. Vendors will also sell carving and art tools, supplies, books, and wood. Among the vendors expected are Art From the Bark, Kathryn and Dennis Overcash from Rhoadesville, Va.; Badger State Blades, Ashten Brown from Wisconsin; Hillcrest Carving, Don Swartz from Lancaster County; Ritter Carvers Inc., Barbara Ritter from Colmar; The Carving Glove Guy, Don Butler from Michigan; and Windy Cape Studios, Joshua Walters from Annville.

Professional sharpening will be available for woodcarving knives and gouges. A silent auction will be held for a number of carvings and wildlife art donated by exhibitors and club members, as well as a variety of other items. Proceeds from the silent auction will be split between the club’s Beginner Carver

Fund and one local nonprofit organization.

Door prizes of carvings done by the Lancaster County WoodCarvers will be awarded regularly throughout the festival.

The Lancaster County WoodCarvers group, made up of 75 members, meets the third Tuesday evening of each month at Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster. Carving starts at 6 p.m. with a meeting and show and tell at 7.

The group holds an “open carve” at Community United Methodist Church on the first Thursday of every month at 9 a.m.and 6 p.m.

“It’s an outlet for my creativity,” Pretz said. “But also there are a lot of books and patterns that you can copy. It’s something you can do that’s not noisy, you’re using your hands, and you can do it almost any place.”

The Conestoga Herb Guild will offer a program, “Designing Your Outdoor Home,” on Wednesday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville.

Landscape architect Joel Young will speak about how to make a landscape, herb garden, or patio more enjoyable and transform it into a new extension of a home. He will present landscape design and planting design tips.

Young is a registered landscape architect in Pennsylvania and New York and is a partner with RETTEW Associates, a regional land planning, engineering, and environmental services firm. He has worked on landscape design and planning projects for residences, medical centers, and college campuses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region for more than 30 years. Young received his bachelor’s

degree in landscape architecture from Penn State University and a master’s degree in landscape architecture and regional planning form Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He lives in Willow Street with his wife and their three sons. Guests are welcome with advance reservations and a fee. To register, contact Susan Atkins at 717-7257451 or atkinsateb@aol.com.

Group to present Purimspiel

The Shaarai Shpielers will perform the 26th annual Purimspiel, “The Music [Ha]-Man,” on Sunday, March 16, at 1:30 p.m., at Congregation Shaarai Shomayim, 75 E. James St., Lancaster. Attendees should enter the building through the James Street doors.

In this year’s production, the famous 1957 Meredith Willson Broadway musical, “The Music Man,” meets the Book of Esther. There is an opening for a new queen, and Hadassah, who is an attractive and fearless Jewish 17-year-old, wants to apply, even though she knows that a Jewish woman has never been chosen and probably never will be. She changes her name to Esther, keeps her religion a secret, and wins the contest held to choose the queen. Meanwhile, Haman, the mean,

anti-Semitic prime minister, convinces the king to issue a decree to kill all the Jews. Esther and her older cousin, Mordechai, who raised her, must save their people from death.

Many of the major songs from “The Music Man” - such as “Till There Was You,” “Seventy-Six Trombones,” “Marian the Librarian,” “Ya Got Trouble,” “Shipoopi,” “Good Night, My Someone,” “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” “Iowa Stubborn,” “Gary, Indiana,” “Picka-Little, Talk-a-Little,” and three barbershop numbers - will be presented as parodies.

The lead roles are played by Lisa Miller as Hadassah/Esther; Stu Blumenthal, King Ahasuerus; Harvey Scolnick, Haman; David Stameshkin, Mordechai; and Kevin Babione, Elin Ketels, Jason

Meyer, and Alan Levine as the four barbershop quartet members. Also performing are Missy DePietro, Noah Goldman, Ilene Kochel, Rachel Levine, C. Tyler Mandel, Schuyler Nissly, Rabbi Jack Paskoff, Abigail Rackliffe, Elizabeth Rackliffe, Janine Riben, Elaine Rostolsky, Colleen Stameshkin, Benjamin Weaver, Jeff Woodman, Sally Woodman, and Alice Yerman.

Levine is the musical director, and Nissly and Babione are the technical directors. Aaron Zinner, Tama Etra, and Jacqueline Ketels coordinate special props, and Bethany Kristich is assistant director. The show is produced, directed, and written by David Stameshkin.

The performance is free and open to the public.

The GIANT Company has announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative, which is in its fifth year. Customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, buy a reusable bag, or convert their choice points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs now through Sunday, March 31.

To launch the program, The GIANT Company will donate $100,000. Through the more than $7.6 million provided to schools

through the Feeding School Kids program, public school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs.

In 2024, for example, Eastern York School District covered negative student lunch balances and provided nutritious breakfasts to students on state-mandated testing days, impacting 2,200 students. In addition, the volunteer organization NutriPacks served 800 students each week, providing access to nutritious food on weekends and school breaks.

advocacy for 17 years. “We have a very robust and vibrant tourism community. We want to share it with as many people as we can. Lancaster County has a great tradition of hospitality.”

Situated at 501 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, Discover Lancaster is the official destination marketing organization of the county. In 2023, 10 million tourists visited Lancaster County, generating $3.4 billion in economic impact and helping to employ 26,000 people in the tourism-related businesses in the areas of attractions, lodging, dining and retail.

“It’s pretty safe to say that

Lancaster County is in the top five in the state in terms of number of visitors and visitor spending,” said Cliff. “We’ve broadened the message about what there’s to do in Lancaster County. There are a lot of cool, neat experiences and recreational activities. We’re still changing. We’re continuing to grow. We have a wide geography and a wide demography that we draw from.”

A vast majority of visitors - about 75% - coming to Lancaster County as a destination hail from the metropolitan markets of Philadelphia; New York and Long Island; and Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. For some, it’s a day trip or an overnight stay.

For others, it’s a three- or four-night getaway or a weeklong vacation.

They’re coming here for the Amish experience; outlet shopping; historic hidden gems; family attractions; main street shopping found in places like Lititz, Ephrata or Mount Joy; art galleries; wineries, breweries and coffee shops; theater; events; farmers markets; and museums.

“It’s a different experience for people coming from big metropolitan areas,” said Cliff. “It’s folks who know and love the Amish culture, but you also have families coming for attractions like Dutch Wonderland. We certainly draw well with adults and families. Where we’ve been lacking is in that 30s-to-40s age group.”

Discover Lancaster employs 14 full-time staff members and eight part-time travel consultants.

A lot of the things we trumpet are attractive to people thinking about relocating a business here, or a doctor or professor who is being recruited to work in Lancaster County. It’s a great place to come and play, but it’s also a great place to come and work. We also have a sizeable retirement community in the county.”

There are lot of things to see and do in Lancaster County.

“We certainly hold our own,” said Cliff. “We don’t have an ocean. But we have a lot to do besides that.”

Discover Lancaster receives about 75% of its funding from the Lancaster County hotel tax. In 2015, Discover Lancaster was formed from the former Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Business Bureau, whose roots can be traced to the 1930s and the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce.

Discover Lancaster promotes local tourism through straight-up marketing; sales teams working to bring meetings, conventions and sports teams to the area; and public relations.

“There’s a real quality of life enhancement piece to it,” said Cliff. “It does have that ripple effect to the community and their suppliers.

“We definitely very much consider locals in the things we do,” said Cliff. “Locals use our resources as much as visitors do. Locals love Lancaster County. Local tourism is a very important part of what we do, kind of like ‘Get out and enjoy what’s in our backyard.’”
