EPC Golf Outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Like golfers who win the Masters Tournament and the green jackets tailored for them, Good Samaritan Services (Good Sam) and Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) are ideally suited for one another.
The two community-minded organizations are once again linking up for the 18th annual EPC Golf Outing benefiting Good Samaritan Services.
The charity event will be held Friday, June 6, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. There will be two sessions of golf. The first will tee off at 7:30 a.m., and the second will start at 1:30 p.m. A light breakfast and a chicken barbecue lunch will be served to the morning groups; the afternoon groups will receive a light café lunch and a chicken barbecue meal for dinner. The deadline to register is Friday, May 23. Go to https://epcgolf outing.com for more information and to register.
Individuals or businesses that wish to sponsor the event or provide prizes can visit the aforementioned website or email EPC marketing and communications director Dan Silva at marketing@ engleonline.com.
“We want to be involved with the communities we serve,” said Jocelyn Engle, who is EPC’s publisher. “We know that some people just need an extra boost in times of need, and this was a perfect fit for us.”

Services, agrees. “We love our partnership with EPC,” said Shelley. “Obviously, the funding that comes from the golf outing is helpful in supporting our mission (and) funding the work that we do in the community. Also, EPC is obviously so well-connected, and this is a great awareness-building event for us, too.”
Good Sam has locations across Lancaster and Chester counties and every day serves about 300 people who are in crisis.
“Our mission is to respond with
compassion to individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness,” Shelley said.
Anyone who needs assistance from Good Samaritan Services can go to https://goodsam services.org. A Good Sam representative will conduct a screening via a phone call to determine if the organization can help.

Penn Manor Band Boosters are beating the drum for its bingo fundraiser.
Designer purses and Yeti tumblers filled with cash will be the big prizes when the club holds its second annual event Saturday, April 26, in the cafeteria of Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. The first game (early bird) will
start at 1:45 p.m., with regular bingo starting at 2 p.m.
“It’s a good time, and it supports our student musicians so that we can get them on the road,” Penn Manor Band Boosters president Kirsten Ditzler said.
Bingo players can win purses designed by Michael Kors, Coach, and Loungefly. “The feedback we got from the first one from big bingo folks said it was a lot of fun and well-organized,” said Ditzler. “We have

Churches plan sunrise service and breakfast
Four local United Methodist Church (UMC) congregations will host an Easter sunrise service and community breakfast on Sunday, April 20, at 7 a.m. A historic lime kiln near Safe Harbor United Methodist Church will provide the setting for this annual event; the kiln is intended to represent the empty tomb.
Speakers will include pastor Dave Ryan of Conestoga UMC, pastor Jeff Miller of Highville UMC, pastor Kevin Kresge of Marticville UMC, and pastor Dominic Tuttle of Safe Harbor UMC. Kresge
will also provide musical accompaniment.
The short service will be followed by a free, hot breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in Safe Harbor Church’s Carter Hall. Parking is available in the church parking lot, 3687 River Road, Conestoga.
Anyone planning to attend the outdoor service should dress for the weather.
Reservations for the breakfast are requested, but not required. To make reservations, leave a message at 717-872 6910. For more information, visit www.safeharborumc.org.

Country Classic
Boro. “It’s a scenic run,” race director Michelle Smith said. “The course is beautiful.”
The half marathon will start at 8 a.m. The 10K will begin at 9 a.m., and the 5K will follow at 9:05 a.m., with reminder announcements made just prior to the start of each race. The event will be held rain or shine.
“One thing that is very unique about our event is we kick off each of the three races with a cannon start,” Manor Township manager Ryan Strohecker said. “That’s pretty cool.”
More significantly, the cannon fire will signify the start of the township’s renewed efforts to preserve its farmland. Strohecker said 83% of all the land zoned in the township is farmland.
Strohecker said one of the things that is new this year is the township has set up a separate 501(c) nonprofit for farmland preservation, specifically in Manor Township. Before COVID, the race had sponsors, and the money went directly to benefit preserving farms across Lancaster County.
“One thing that is different now is that Manor Township is doing our own farmland preservation through the county ag board,” Strohecker said. “Every dollar that is given in sponsorship money is going directly toward farmland preservation here in Manor Township. We are pretty excited about that.”
Go to https://manor township.net/country -classic-registration/ to register. Online registration will run until Thursday, May 1, at 2 p.m. Online registration is strongly encouraged, and the fee must be paid through PayPal. Participants can pick up their packets on Friday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to
7 p.m. at the Manor Township office, 950 W. Fairway Drive, Lancaster. Runners may also pick up their packets the morning of the race in the church lobby. People who have preregistered and have their race number can go directly to the start line without additional check-in. Same-day registration will open approximately one hour prior to the start of each race. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, check, and money order. Bib numbers and T-shirts (while supplies last) will be handed out to participants who register on the day of the event.
An awards ceremony will be held soon after the completion of the races. There will be cash prizes for the top three overall winners of each race for both men and women and medals for age bracket winners. Anyone who sets a course record will earn additional prize money. In addition to the races, there will be bounce houses, and Central Manor Church of God will provide free food. “It’s a great family event,” Strohecker said. “We will have stuff to do for non-racers. We encourage people to bring children.

We’re going to have a kids’ race. There are things for everybody in the family to do.”
The kids’ run will start at 9:45 a.m. Kids age 5 and under will run 50 yards, children ages 6 to 8 will run 75 yards, and 9- to 12-yearolds will run 100 yards.
The food, fun, and footraces are designed to draw attention to the chief mission. “The racing side of it is just to get the community out to be able to participate in something,” said Strohecker. “At the end of the day, this is all benefiting farmland preservation.”

was involved with numerous philanthropic endeavors and set the tone for the company going forward, Jocelyn said. Since its inception, the golf outing has generated nearly $300,000 for neighbors in need. “We want to make the experience memorable for golfers and also make sure community members are aware of what Good Sam does,” Jocelyn said. “We want to (send the message) that everyone is included. We want to make sure (the golf outing is) affordable for everybody to take part. … I think what’s so neat about our event is
we’ve had so many returning sponsors and golfers because it is something people look forward to every year.”
do,” said Shelley. Good Sam will be expanding its impact with two homes in Phoenixville. It will be the first time Good Sam will offer housing for women in Phoenixville. The homes will continue to provide safe housing for women facing homelessness, with the added resources of Good Sam.

Many of Good Sam’s 30 staff members will volunteer at the golf event. “Our staff loves coming to the golf outing,” Shelley said. “It’s such a cool day for our staff. A lot of them are working directly with the people we serve every day providing case management, and it’s a heavy job. It’s important, important work. It’s really important for our staff to come on the day of the golf outing and see the community support for the work that they’re doing.”
Good Samaritan Services executive director Nate Hoffer will attend the outing. “His true passion for what he and his team members do has been fun for us to watch as an organization, because we know everyone is being taken care of by Good Sam,” said Jocelyn.
Only 3% of Good Samaritan Services’ budget is funded by the government. “People have been generous and kind in supporting and believing in the work we

Shelley stated Good Sam takes an individualized approach to caring for clients. “Everyone in crisis has their own individual story,” she said. “They are on a unique path on how they are going to reach stability.”
Courtney and her 3-year-old daughter, Cherish, are among the families being assisted by Good Samaritan Services.
long-term housing stability.
Clients meet one-onone with a resource coordinator, who provides case management with “bite-size goals” for them to work on, Shelley said. She added Good Sam team members “take this large problem of crisis and break it into sizable goals while walking alongside them in that journey and equipping them with tools.”
There are no quick fixes. The goal is to remove any barriers that might be in the way of clients achieving
Courtney and her 3-yearold daughter, Cherish, were the first family to move into Good Samaritan Services’ Lancaster city residence for women and children, which opened last year.
“Good Sam Services has gone out of their way to make sure I have everything I need and more,” Courtney said. “The opportunities I’ve received are truly a blessing. They helped keep me going when I could have quit, and I’m so grateful for their support. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe.”
Scholarships available for student entrepreneurs
Each year, the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce awards business scholarships to graduating seniors at Penn Manor, Lampeter-Strasburg, Solanco, and Pequea Valley high schools. Both public school and homeschooled students in these districts are welcome to apply. Higher education is not required. Starting this year and continuing into the future, the scholarships will be for $750 rather than the previous $500. The scholarships are designed for students who are passionate about business ownership, and they aim to support those with entrepreneurial goals as they start and grow their own businesses. Funds can be used for business start-up expenses, such as web design, attorney fees, and purchasing equipment; college tuition; apprenticeship programs; and other costs.

Local nurse adds author to her resume
Local nurse Megan Foltz, who also has a podcast titled “The Renewed Nurse,” has announced the release of her new book, “Anatomy of Holiness.”
“The Renewed Nurse” podcast and community began in 2021, giving listeners a chance to learn about the various aspects of the nursing profession, find renewal and balance, and learn about Jesus.
Four years and 180 podcast episodes later, Foltz decided to write a devotional. “Anatomy of Holiness” was released right before Christmas in 2024. She describes the work as a book of “daily devotions to hear God’s heartbeat” and poetry, which combines the anatomy of the human body alongside spiritual concepts.

The new author is currently speaking at conferences and workshops, hosting retreats, working as an RN and serving coffee from her coffee truck, Character Coffee.
For more information, to connect with Foltz or purchase a copy of her book, visit www.holyground healthcare.com.

The inaugural event was a sellout. People can buy 20 regular games of bingo (three cards per game) or purchase a reserved table for six players that includes 20 regular games of bingo.

Ditzler said the fundraiser will benefit all the marching arts, including the marching band, which performs in the fall with a battery, front ensemble, and wind section, and the indoor percussion unit, which plays over the winter.
“With funds raised last year, we were able to offset a large portion of the costs accrued by supporting our marching unit and indoor percussion groups,” said Ditzler. The marching band placed eighth in the Open Class National Championships for USBands at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in November and is eyeing a return trip this season.
Ditzler added that Penn Manor Band Boosters also help fund drill writing (choreography), music writing, costumes, instrument repair, and color guard flags.
In addition to Ditzler, the board is made up of vice president Tammy Swift, secretary Stacy Nonnemacher, treasurer Matt Nonnemacher, and truck crew coordinator Jason Hunnell.
Competition days can be as long as 14 hours for the booster club members. The band boosters provide meals for every competition with help from many of the parents.
Chaperones ride along with the students on the buses, staying with them the entire day. Jason said they shine shoes, take care of uniform repairs, supply bottles of water, provide any medical assistance for the members, and also assist the truck crew with getting instruments and
props on and off the field.
The truck crew builds and maintains props, equipment, and instruments for the show and loads and unloads the equipment and props before and after a performance. The band boosters are continually looking for sponsorships from local businesses, whose names will be put on the band trailer.
“We also have several other parents - Heather Evans, Krista Allison, Katrina Hunnell, Carl Swift, Michelle Murch, Michelle Eisenhauer, and Jannine Ward - that make the unit go as smoothly as it does, and who we are grateful to call our band

family,” Jason said.
The band boosters’ work does not go unnoticed. “I’m very appreciative,” said sophomore Zach Magill, who plays the snare drum in the indoor percussion group and marching band. “It’s amazing the amount of work they put in for us. Not many programs have that, so it’s nice to have
