RMore than just a game

ugby football is not quite like any other sport. Originating in England in the 19th century, rugby has become increasingly popular in the United States in recent years, but many Americans are still unfamiliar with the team sport. This excludes Bella Vogel of Washington Boro, a recent graduate of Cornerstone Homeschool Co-op with an unrelenting passion for rugby.

“When you’re on a team, it’s like a family; you’re out on the field fighting for each other.”

At first glance, rugby appears similar to American football; both sports involve teams of players clashing as they attempt to carry an egg-shaped ball to the opponent’s goal post. Both sports are descendants of games commonly played in medieval Europe, but rugby is known for its intensity and matches that can turn a rugby pitch into a battlefield.

“I like how aggressive and manon-man it is,” Vogel said. “When you’re on a team, it’s like a family; you’re out on the field fighting for each other. The camaraderie is different than other sports.”

Vogel discovered her passion for team sports when she began playing soccer at the age of 5. After competing on a boys’ soccer team for several years, Vogel sought a game that matched her athletic drive, and she found rugby to be a perfect fit. In the last seven years, Vogel has played on local teams via Penn Legacy and the Knightmares rugby club, which is based in western

Lancaster County. Vogel has also played on the national team The Rugby Advantage. Last December, Vogel competed as a member of the United States’ U17 rugby team in the global tournament in New Zealand. At the end of July, she will fly to the United Kingdom as a current player on

the United States’ U18 team to face off against England, Wales and Scotland.

In addition to the sport’s intensity, Vogel said she appreciates the values of rugby and applies what she has learned from it in other areas of her life. “You have to be respectful in rugby. Only

team captains can talk to referees, and you can’t yell at them or disrespect other players,” said Vogel. Vogel and her family operate the Petal Pot Market outside of their Washington Boro home to raise funds for rugby-related expenses. Last spring, a small homeschool co-op in the Southern

Last April, Penn Manor High School (PMHS) students in all grades gathered together to participate in activities such as team-building exercises, board games, hallway handball, crafting friendship bracelets and making door decorations. The event, titled Friday Fun, was organized by members of the school’s Aevidum Club for a competition held via a partnership between Invent2Prevent, EdVenture Partners and the Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3).

The team of PMHS students qualified as one of six finalists that traveled to Washington, D.C., at the end of June. The team, comprising students Fatuma Mussa, Kayla Shertzer, Paige Hoyt and Kaylie Brackbill, won first place in the high school category after presenting Friday Fun in front of a panel of judges. The first-place prize for the nation-wide contest included a cash stipend to enable the students to expand their program and sustain it for years to come.

Maria Vita, a psychology teacher at PMHS and one of Aevidum Club’s advisers, said she never expected to make it to first place when she first applied to participate in the program. This was the school’s first time participating, and Vita said she initially thought it would be a good way for PMHS students to discuss violence prevention and mental health issues, bringing the community closer together in the process. “I just thought it was a great

way high school kids could do something and make a difference,” Vita added. After being accepted to the program, PMHS’ Aevidum Club received $1,000 to fund a project of its own design. The goal of the program is to encourage schools to combat certain issues such as social isolation at a local level. CP3 categorizes these issues as significant risk factors that can contribute to acts of violence across the nation. The students on PMHS’ team referenced several research-backed studies to design Friday Fun, which utilized bonding activities to help students feel closer to each other and encourage them to seek help from school staff members when experiencing a difficult situation.

“We did research to understand the risk factors of social isolation and to broaden and build our theory,” Vita said. “It wasn’t a random idea to have students do leisure activities and have fun together; when you’re enjoying yourself, you’re more likely to connect to other people.” After conducting a survey at the end of the day, PMHS administrators noticed a 35% increase in the number of students who felt comfortable reaching out to an adult for help while struggling with a personal crisis. The project aligned with Aevidum Club’s goals to raise awareness of mental health issues and to advocate for inclusion. The PMHS Aevidum Club is currently in the process of redesigning Friday Fun to increase its scope, and it hopes to use the funds earned through the contest to support the program’s expansion to schools throughout Pennsylvania.

Penn Manor High School students (from left) Kayla Shertzer, Fatuma Mussa, Paige Hoyt and Kaylee Brackbill created Friday Fun to help their peers connect with each other.

Get to know your neighbor at upcoming fundraiser for SNM

Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 N. Little Britain Road, Quarryville, will host its annual fundraiser for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31. The rain-or-shine event will highlight SNM’s efforts to serve the community, and it will feature live entertainment, auctions and various food trucks. Admission to the fundraiser will be free, but attendees are encouraged to register online in advance at https://tinyurl.com/ SNMbritainhill24. Food and beverages will be available to purchase from food trucks such as 22BBQ and Italian Oven on Wheels, and Penny’s Ice Cream will vend frozen desserts during the fundraiser. The event will also include a silent auction as well as a live auction for the first time this year. Attendees will have an opportunity to bid on a variety of items

and experiences, including tickets to the Fulton Theatre, an antique quilt, two vouchers for a glassblowing class and a sailing activity on Chesapeake Bay.

BUSINESS Directory BUSINESS Directory

Britain Hill first hosted the annual fundraiser shortly after the coronavirus pandemic, when SNM’s executive director, Teresa Dolan, proposed a collaboration for a new event called “Do You Know Your Neighbor?” The goal of the event was to give members of the public insight on different types of programs SNM offers the Southern End, which comprise more than its food bank in Quarryville. During the first fundraiser at Britain Hill, SNM representatives set up stations to highlight specific areas of focus, including rent and utility assistance, and initiatives to distribute gas cards, diapers and school supplies to local families.

“This event not only brings awareness of what services (SNM) has to offer, but it’s proved to be a great fundraiser for them,” said Debbie Helm, the owner of Britain Hill. Since founding the venue in 2017, Helm and her husband, Ken, have frequently organized events to give local nonprofits a platform and amplify their impact in the community.

Representatives from SNM will be present to share information on the nonprofit’s many programs and to accept donations from supporters. Donations and the proceeds from both auctions will help SNM cover its operational costs and program expenses, as well as help the organization fund a new initiative to combat housing insecurity across Lancaster County. “We’re definitely seeing an uptick in the number of people facing issues with housing,” said

Cruisin’ for Cats brings cars, bikes and felines together

Cats won’t be the only source of purring at the Columbia Animal Shelter on Saturday, July 27. Expect to hear the hum of engines as well when the shelter hosts its annual Cruisin’ for Cats Car & Bike Show. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St., Columbia.

“This is a wonderful event for all ages,” said Tammy L. Jalbert, executive director of the shelter. “There will be awesome cars, bikes, live entertainment by Tate Lehman & The Blue Chilis. We will have hamburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork and desserts for sale. And everybody has a chance to cast their vote and pick a winner in the car and bike category.”

New this year, in addition to the top 20 vote getters, the top three cars and the

top three bikes will each receive a cash prize.

This is the sixth year the shelter has held the car show. While cats and cars might seem like an unusual pairing, it makes sense considering the history of the Columbia Animal Shelter, Jalbert said. “Harold and Judy McKonly founded the Kleen-Rite Car Wash over 60 years ago. Judy had a passion for animals and her lifelong dream was to build an animal shelter, so when she passed, their family created a foundation in their honor,” she explained. “It made perfect sense when we opened (the shelter) back in 2019 to have a car and bike show, and it felt like the perfect way to support their love for all things cars, bikes and animals in one event.”

People who attend the event will have the opportunity to win gift baskets

and other giveaways, and all proceeds will be used to provide animal care in the shelter, including low-cost wellness clinic services, low-cost spay/neuter clinics and low-cost dental services.

“It is definitely one of our major fundraising events of the year and one of my favorites,” Jalbert stated.

The shelter will be open for tours during the car and bike show, and people will be able to meet animals up for adoption.

“Come out and support a really great cause, see some awesome animals available for adoption, look at some cool cars that may just be older than you, and enjoy a day of family fun,” Jalbert said.

There is a discount to preregister a car or bike up until the day of the

event. On-site registration will also be available. To register, search for “Cruisin for Cats Car & Bike Show” at www.eventbrite .com. There is no charge for spectators to attend. For more information on Columbia Animal Shelter, visit https://columbia animalshelter.com.

Rugby

player from pg 1

End asked Vogel to teach students about rugby; Vogel visited the homeschoolers once every other week to explain basic rugby skills and the rules of the game, sharing her own experience as a player and offering resources to kids who became interested in pursuing the sport further.

“It was really fun,” Vogel said. “Some of them were definitely hooked, and it was exciting to see.” Vogel will attend Life University in Georgia this fall to study exercise science and to compete on its Division I women’s rugby team, and her ultimate goal is to compete in the Olympics someday.
