TCelebrating 50 years of service
o celebrate the 50 years that the Intercourse Library has been providing a variety of services to local cardholders, board members and library staff members are planning a full year of activities combined with the goal of raising $50,000 for the organization.
“In January, there was a kickoff event with doughnuts and coffee, and there’s a historical display with information (about the library),” shared Intercourse Library board of trustees member Tammy McCauley.
The creation of the library, which opened as a reading room in 1975, was originally spearheaded by the Intercourse Lions Club. The club sought and received permission from the Pequea Valley School District to use an empty one-room schoolhouse as a satellite location of the Lancaster Public Library. By 1988, the reading center had become an independent entity
named the Intercourse Public Library and boasted a collection of 21,000 items in 900 square feet. In 2001, the name was changed to the Pequea Valley Public Library. By 2004, the need for more space was clear, and a capital campaign was instituted, which resulted in a new 9,500-square-foot building located at 31 Center St., Intercourse, opening in 2007. In 2021, the board voted to restore the name Intercourse Library.
A branch library is located at 835 Houston Run Drive, Gap, in Salisbury Township.
During the month of February, the library will emphasize technology with an expert visiting each Friday to help those who need support with a new device. On Thursday, Feb. 20, at 9:30 a.m., genealogy website expert Sue Gregg will give a presentation. A special room in the library, which is dedicated to local history, may also be utilized for genealogy research by appointment. “(The room) has all kinds of really cool

“I wouldn’t pass up the chance to make my girls feel special and important. They love getting to pick out new outfits and get all dolled up,” said Chris Martz when describing the Daddy-Daughter Dance offered annually at Freedom Life Church. “I just enjoy watching them get to cut loose and not have a care in the world. If they are having a blast, then I’m having a blast.”
“I enjoy the dance because it’s a special time with my daughters,”
added Josh Kauffman. “I enjoy not only seeing my girls smile, laugh and have fun but (also) love seeing all the other men enjoying the special moment with their daughters. It’s a blessing having a church that puts this on for men to connect in a special way with their daughters.”
This year’s “Enchanted” DaddyDaughter Dance will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, at the church, located at 789 Gap Newport Pike, Atglen. The event will be hosted by the FL Kids Team, the church’s youth group, and admission is free.

Girls are welcome to attend the event with their fathers, grandfathers or uncles.
The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and refreshments will be available, and guests will be encouraged to stop by the photo booth for a memento of the evening. The party will follow on the dance floor, which will be located in the church auditorium.
When fathers and daughters were asked their favorite part of the Daddy-Daughter Dance, many expressed similar feelings as Martz and Kauffman.
“(My favorite part is) dancing with my daughter, (Addison), and watching her have fun,” said Herb Turk.
“I love to pick out a new dress and getting dressed up,” said Addison. “I get to dance with my daddy and my friends, too.”

Julian Jenkins said he enjoys watching his daughters, Jaclyn and Joslyn, dance with their friends.
“(When I asked what their favorite part of the dance was), Jaclyn and Joslyn said everything - from the decorations to the food, even the little trinkets,” said Jenkins. “They absolutely love the photo ops with Dad, and food is (also) a big winner.”
Steve Bowman said he also enjoys the food and “when they play nice songs for dads and daughters to dance.” His daughter, Char, said her favorite part is the food and “getting to go out with Dad.”
Jon Miller attends the dance with his daughter, Maddie, who was less than a year old at her first dance.
“What I like the most is that even though Maddie is still considered a baby, my wife goes and picks out the prettiest dress for her and makes me wear a tie,” he shared. “I also liked the interaction of having all the other men there. The girls are still able to go and dance, and for me, I’m able to socialize with other men who don’t prefer to dance. But each year I look forward to taking Maddie to the dance; we know it will only get better the older she gets.”

Kurt Manges said he enjoys the one-on-one time with his daughter, Selah. “It makes her feel special, and (I enjoy) the fellowship with the other dads,” said Manges.
“I like the opportunity to have a daddy-daughter date more than just go out to dinner. An actual dance is cool,” added Nate Woods.
“I think the best part is having the opportunity to show my daughter how she should be courted when she becomes of age and allowed to date, which is 30 years old, by the way.”

Movie Madness will be the theme for the library’s March celebration. Movie titles, dates, and times will be announced via the library website at https:// intercourselib.org.
A fundraiser dinner dubbed “Feast for the Future” will be held in April. “It will be a fundraising event for the future of the library,” explained McCauley, who noted that dinners have been popular in the past. The dinner will be held at the Olde Mill Restaurant in Intercourse. The meal will be prepared by Chef Ty and his team. McCauley pointed out that funds raised by the dinner
will be designated to cover a variety of needs, including programs, staffing, and building maintenance. “We will need to replace all the aging computers this year,” she stated, noting that the library carpets are nearly 20 years old. More information about the dinner will be available on the library website in the near future.
For May, the theme will be “Authors and Artists,” and organizers have lined up a few local creators to give presentations. Award-winning author Shawn Smucker will speak, as will family members of the late artist Milton Denlinger; Denlinger’s family will bring some paintings along. The library is also working with Osceola Mill House to hold an event focused on the art of Delores Hackenberger, who once lived at Osceola Mill. Watch the library website for dates and times for these events.
The Summer Reading Program will kick off in June with a Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 7. As in the past, the event will feature a scavenger hunt, rock painting, and free food, and young readers will be encouraged to sign up for library cards as well as to
participate in the Summer Reading Program.
In celebration of the Lancaster County Lafayette Bicentennial, the library has connected with Zachary Stoltzfus, who has a doctorate in modern European history from Florida State University, with a focus on French history. Stoltzfus will present a talk on Lafayette at the library on Saturday, July 12, at a to-be-determined time.
“Authors and Artists” will return in August with author John Wasserman, former game warden, talking about his books, which are popular with hunters and with members of the Plain community. The date of this event will be announced via the website.
To celebrate September, the library will focus on fall with a “Johnny Appleseed”-themed event involving apples and books.
The library’s Run for Reading 5K will return on Saturday, Oct. 11. Race-day registration and packet pickup will begin at the library at 8:45 a.m. The run will start at 10 a.m.

held. McCauley noted that the library has held gala events in the stacks since 2012, but this year’s gala will be held elsewhere.
Each year, the Intercourse Library partners with the Intercourse Merchants Association to host holiday festivities during December. In 2024, a dozen sheds were set in a circle on the grass at the library, and a variety of crafters sold their wares under a Christmas light display. Food trucks were also located at the library, and a cookie competition was held.
Catherine O’Sullivan, director of the Intercourse Library, stated that library usage increased significantly over the last year. “We had a 27,000 (item checkout) increase in circulation numbers for Intercourse and Gap during the calendar year of 2024 as compared to 2023,” she noted. McCauley added that the number of items checked out in the last year was nearly 207,500. “For us, that’s a lot,” reported O’Sullivan.
McCauley added that the growth points to the need for increased funds. “We need more staff and resources,” she said.

who noted that she expects the more than 40 cast members to be “incredibly engaged and give powerful performances.”
“The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” featuring songs from the Disney animated feature, will be presented at the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 7; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, March 1 and March 8; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 2 and 9.
The show opens with the pealing of the bells at the cathedral of Notre Dame in 15th-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer played by Ric Weaver, is kept captive by duplicitous caretaker Dom Claude Frollo, played by Caleb Heckman. When Quasimodo escapes for a day, he learns about the cruelty of the world outside his bell tower, and is rescued from a dangerous situation by a beautiful Romani woman, Esmeralda, played by Jacqui Schaeffer. Quasimodo is drawn to her, but he is not her only admirer.
Program to focus on spring gardening
Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will hold a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster.
Dana Mead, a Lancaster County Master Gardener, will present “Wake Up and Plan Your Garden.” Mead will speak about waking up a garden in the spring, including pruning, what plants to add or remove, and tips to benefit plants and pollinators.
Guests may attend for a donation. For more information, email Kathy at KRASgardener@yahoo .com. Information about the club is available by visiting www.womensgarden cluboflancastercounty.com or searching for “Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County” on Facebook.
Both the handsome Captain Phoebus, played by Mitch King, and Frollo are smitten as well, and the three compete for Esmeralda’s favor. When Frollo decides to destroy the Roma, Quasimodo must take action to save his love.
The themes of the show represent a bit of a departure from Cavod’s usual family fare. “We have interesting challenges to find a show that actors will want to be a part of and that audiences want to see and (that meets) the values and standards of Cavod,” said DePaul, who added that while she loves lighthearted and fun shows, Cavod also endeavors to present cautionary tales.
“There’s a time and place for shows that will make you think, and this show is more that,” explained
DePaul, referring to the age-13-and-up recommendation for children attending. “The theme is that we are all capable of beautiful, wonderful things, but also of terrible things,” she said. “When we forget that, we’re in trouble.”
One challenge of staging the show was discerning the best set presentation. “(We had the problem of) how to create a cathedral, bell tower, city streets, a tavern,” said DePaul. To solve that issue, an unusual triangular staging was utilized. “To do set changes, we will have a three-sided set piece that will be turned,” she explained.
“The actors will be part of the story telling, explaining where we are as they move the set pieces.”
DePaul noted that a choir will provide the soundtrack
of what is happening on stage. “It’s very traditional - as if you went to Catholic Mass in the 1400s,” said DePaul, who noted that choir members have risen to the challenge of learning the Latin lyrics.
According to DePaul, the goal is to convey the lesson contained within the show by using the set, actors, and music to the fullest extent. “We are utilizing the set and the theater to immerse the audience in the storytelling in a way I don’t think we’ve ever done,” she noted, adding that actors will be singing and dancing through the aisles and doing the set changing. “I think it will be interesting and beautiful to watch.”
Tickets may be purchased at www.cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355.

South America, and it is a tribute to the diversity of the world’s cultures. With a few exceptions, the pieces are from the mid- to late 20th century, and many are still worn today in parts of the world for revelry, ritual, and the rhythms of everyday life. They exhibit a profusion of shapes, styles, and materials, as well as the ingenious use of embellishments. The exhibit is organized into five thematic sections: Cultural Identity; Power, Prestige and Status; Ceremonies and Celebrations; Spiritual Beliefs;
and Protection.
The exhibit was curated by Stacey Miller, an independent curator of ethnographic headwear. She has spent more than 30 years collecting and researching the cultural significance of hats and headdresses. Since 2000, she has delivered educational programs, lectured, hosted special events, and curated numerous exhibitions based on her collection. The program can be tailored to fit the needs and wants of the community where it is being presented.
During the program, participants set and track personal health goals, supplemented by educational sessions intended to provide additional motivation
and support. The toolkit offers resources for educational and motivational presentations, guidance for setting healthy lifestyle and activity goals, and group activities to encourage physical activity and healthy eating.
The curriculum writers noted that local community organizations implementing the program can reach individuals of various education levels, employment types, and incomes. These community organizations also can provide social support and reinforcement to members, especially if they share a common goal of wanting to change health behaviors.

BY JEFF FALK
Providing care for incapacitated wives and husbands is a huge commitment and an even bigger undertaking. The act can be physically, mentally and emotionally taxing.
But who cares for the caregiver? Oftentimes, that responsibility falls to the caregivers themselves.
Well Spouse Association is a support group that recognizes that caregiving husbands and wives are more effective when they are healthy.
“This is our therapy,” said Barry Applebaum, the founder of the Lancaster chapter of Well Spouse Association. “This is our respite. This is a way to talk to people who know what we’re going through. Sometimes it’s for the friendships that we make.”
“When you become a spousal caregiver, it’s uniquely different,” continued Applebaum. “It has unique challenges. That person was someone you communicated with. ... But it’s not the same person. You learn to love and care in a different way.”
The Lancaster branch of Well Spouse Association meets at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. The support group for spouses who are taking care of significant others meets via Zoom on the second Wednesday and at Wegmans, 2000 Crossings Blvd., Lancaster, on the fourth Wednesday.
There is a yearly membership fee associated with joining the group.
“Every person’s situation is different,” said Applebaum, a 66-year-old resident of East Lampeter Township. “Our spouses are sick and can’t get out,
so the Zoom meeting is convenient. Some people don’t want their spouses to know they’re doing this. It can be threatening. For most of us, the reality is our spouses are (present in this world), but they’re very different. We have to transport them, and some can’t talk well.”
Since its inception about nine years ago, the Lancaster branch of Well Spouse Association has had a membership fluctuating between three and eight spousal caregivers.
The members are caring for spouses who have had strokes, cancer, traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and muscular dystrophy.
“The numbers of people who are spousal caregivers is staggering,” said Applebaum. “We’re this well-kept secret. Some contend that the average senior citizen is a spousal caregiver.”
“You reach a point that we call anticipatory grief where we grieve a loved one who is still here,” he added. “For many of us, when a spouse does pass, we grieve extensively. But others come to terms with it quickly because they’ve already grieved. People reach a point where they can’t (give care) anymore.”
In 2011, Applebaum’s wife, Susanne, an otherwise healthy 50-year-old dental hygienist, experienced a massive stroke. After attending Well Spouse Association meetings near King of Prussia; Cherry Hill, N.J.; and Baltimore, Applebaum decided to start a chapter closer to home.
“Our lives have never been the same since (the stroke),” said Applebaum. “We were going to travel and live our
lives. But it was all taken away from us. When you have no choice, you do what you have to do. I went for counseling, but at the end of the day, being around people who get it was more therapeutic. We are dealing with our (spouse’s) own specific disabilities, but we understand and support each other. We understand what we go through day to day.”

Association was founded in 1988, and the organization assists more than 25 support groups.
Well Spouse from pg 8 Dalí Quartet to perform with local pianist
“There was a point with my wife where I was doing everything and I burned out, and I ended up with my own health issues,” said Applebaum. “I want to maintain a sense of who
I am. (Well Spouse) keeps me in a world where I talk to people, and it keeps me relevant. We all go through these cycles. We have good weeks, and we have bad weeks. When I’m feeling down, I realize some people have it worse.” For additional information, call 717-413-6452.
