Shortly after Bryant Glick worked with Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy to organize the first Pickin’ in the Park event in Terre Hill in May, he began looking forward to the next one. “With the success of (the) spring (event), a number of people encouraged us to try to do another one this fall,” said Glick, who connected with New Holland Ambulance Association’s EMS chief, Darrell Fisher, to make the organization the beneficiary of the event.
The second Pickin’ in the Park, which will include steak and chili cook-offs, public safety vehicles and New Holland first responders, food vendors, and live music, will be held in the New Holland Memorial Community Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free, and the event will be held rain or shine.
In a change from spring, the fall event will be about first responders and public safety with a family friendly focus similar to a touch-atruck event. “All the (local) emergency services will be involved,” said Fisher, who noted that New Holland Ambulance will bring an emergency vehicle for tours, and there will be handouts for children. The New Holland Police Department will be present, as will Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR). GSFR will bring the ladder truck for a candy scramble to be held at 1 p.m.
“The Lancaster County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit will do a demonstration,” noted Glick.
This event’s steak competition will be called “Raise the Steaks” and will feature more than 50 competitive grilling teams from the East Coast vying for a $1,000 first-place prize and a chance to qualify for the world championship in Texas in March 2022. The Steak Cookoff Association is the sanctioning body for the event. The PA State Chili Cook-Off, which will be a people’s choice event will be held as well. For a fee, those who wish to take part will receive samples of each entry to judge. There is a fee to enter the chili cook-off, and a cash prize will be awarded to the winner.
A number of food trucks and vendors are lined up to offer food for purchase, including Hen House Grilling, Holy Smoked Meats, Joe’s Famous Wings, and CK Concessions.
LANCO Performing Arts will perform, and musical entertainment will be provided by Sam Schmidthuber and Naomi’s Magic.
