Nearly 10 years ago, Keystone Church Compassion Ministry member Beth Ranck met in a local coffee shop with Shira Zimmerman, senior director of adult services with The Factory Ministries. “(Members of the Compassion Ministry) had been reading ‘When Helping Hurts: (How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor ... and Yourself),’” recalled Ranck, who noted a section of the book laid out ideas for doing a match program with struggling community members. “We had this idea to see if we could work better (at alleviating poverty by working) with The Factory,” said Ranck, who noted that the discussion with Zimmerman preceded a number of meetings, conversations, and proposals about the subject. Before 2020, a program known as Keys to Savings had kicked off, partnering Keystone with The Factory. Keystone helps provide

Keys to accomplishment

funds for local residents who need to save for a specific purpose through a match program. Adult advocates at The Factory work with savings participants through one of two goal tracks. The client must take part in certain meetings and complete a budgeting class among other requirements. The three entities - Keystone, The Factory, and the client - work together to achieve a savings goal for the program. Keys to Savings has now graduated at least a dozen participants, with some clients returning to successfully complete the program a second time.

Bethany Miller, adult advocate with The Factory Ministries, explained that Factory clients who are working to achieve goals by participating in specific Factory programs are given the opportunity to take part in Keys to Savings when they meet certain criteria. She explained that the client’s need might involve an item they must save toward, such as a vehicle. “(Items that are

Celebrating Cavod at 20

At the heart of Cavod Performing Arts is executive director and founder Connie Dienner’s heart for children and young adults.

“The arts are a vehicle for kids’ lives to be changed,” said Dienner.

“(The goal is) for them to find their identity by taking classes and finding their giftings and their talents.”

On Saturday, Feb. 8, Cavod will celebrate 20 years of existence with an extravaganza called Lifetime Tour at Worship Center, 2384 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, from 2 to 5 p.m.

There is no charge to attend, but registration is requested by Wednesday, Feb. 5, by visiting www.cavod.org or calling 717-354-3355.

Guests will receive a passport and a bag upon entry. More than 10 stations will be available in the foyer area. As attendees have their passports stamped at each station, they will receive a gift.

“The first station will (represent) the barn where we started on the Welsh Mountain,” said Dienner, who added that the second station will represent the location at 501 E. Main St., in New Holland. “We were there

More than man’s best friend

If you walk into the headquarters of United Disabilities Services (UDS), located at 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, you’ll find more than a few reasons that dogs are commonly referred to as man’s best friend. The nonprofit organization provides highly trained service dogs for clients throughout Lancaster County and its surrounding areas, and each UDS dog is equipped with a special skillset to meet its owner’s needs.

In early January, an office on the second floor of UDS’ main building was temporarily converted into a

kennel for a litter of young golden Labs. The six puppies were less than 3 months old and, like all new arrivals at UDS, adorable but unruly. After a 22-month training program, each dog will be obedient enough to accomplish tasks such as opening a door and picking up a TV remote from the floor. Outside the room of puppies, UDS volunteer Linda Rineer worked with CJ, a black Lab that is almost ready to be paired with a client. While a chorus of yelping and whining echoed from the temporary kennel, Rineer praised and encouraged CJ as he pulled a walker and opened doors on command.

six years,” said Dienner, who noted that Cavod has been at its present location at 665 W. Main St., New Holland for 11 years.

Cavod Theatre, which is located at 641 W. Main St., opened nine years ago, and a branch opened in Manheim four years ago. Another station will honor the late Stan Deen, who helped Dienner found Cavod Theatre, and stations will be dedicated to Cavod programs such as the City Light outreach dance teams and Friends in Motion, which offers classes for individuals with disabilities. Another station will feature Ornate, Cavod’s professional dance team, which performs locally and internationally with a trip planned to South Africa and Kenya later this year. There will also be a missions table and a blessings table where students can share the Cavod experiences for which they are thankful and make suggestions about what Cavod should offer in the future.

Another station will feature Dienner’s book, which will be released that day. The book is called “From Barn to Stage.” “(The title) has a double meaning,” said Dienner, who noted that the book tells both her story of growing up Plain on an Indiana hog farm and the story of the founding of Cavod. “I wasn’t allowed to be in shows, but I would sing to the pigs and dance for the pigs,” recalled Dienner. “That’s how I got my

start in the arts.” Dienner’s book, which she wrote with Shawn Smucker, will be available that day by donation.

In addition to the stations, illusionist Jay Stoltzfus will perform in the café, and cake will be available to share.

“When their passport is stamped, it will go into a drawing for gifts such as ear pods, a year of free tuition, or season theater tickets,” said Dienner.

“At 3:30 p.m. we will go into the auditorium for a production,” said Dienner, who noted that Cavod will show a video by MAKE/FILMS that looks at Cavod’s history and its future. “We will have live testimonies, dance, music, and worship,” said Dienner. “We really want

the community to come and experience and see the progression of what God has done over the years,” she added. “(They will) also be able to hear the heart of where we are going. We have just begun.”

related equipment might also qualify, as would home repairs or projects up to $2,000. “(Other) projects are a one-to-one match up to $1,000,” explained Miller, who noted that these needs are often related to the six resources - emotional, relational, physical, spiritual, intellectual, or financial - that The Factory has deemed are necessary. “Spiritual would be saving to go on a ladies’ retreat, or emotional (resources) would include saving for copays for counseling (services),” said Miller. “These resources are important.”

In his role as the Keys to Savings coordinator with the Keystone Church Compassion Ministry team, Jared Stoltzfus acts as a bridge between the church and The Factory. “I facilitate receiving applications and then review them with the Compassion team,” said Stoltzfus, who noted the team keeps track of an applicant’s progress as he or she is saving funds and takes part in rewarding the participant for reaching a goal. Often that means building relationships with the participant by meeting for lunch.

Keystone pastor Brandon Fisher said that Keys to Savings represents a change from the way the church handled benevolence previously. “Keystone was involved in various benevolence programs, but mostly with people who were passing through,” he said, noting that the church offered a food pantry and help with certain types of bills. “When The Factory came on the scene, we were glad to have someone with the social services wherewithal to know how to help without hurting,” explained Fisher. “The Factory is able to provide the relational connection that is helpful to move people from where they’re at to where they can be while eliminating the dependence cycle and looking toward development rather than just emergency response.”

Ranck said that she hopes other Paradise-area churches will consider taking part in such a program. “Maybe there are other churches that would like to be mentored by Keystone to cause this program to spread,” she said. “There’s a lot more need than resources, and if

Ranck noted that one of the Compassion Ministry’s challenges is to remove barriers between participants and churches. “(We know) that these people (may) see church as an intimidating and scary place,” she said. “We have decided to have a meeting at the church and show participants around when no one is there so that maybe it’s not so scary and you can come back.”

other people could join in, this could be an even more beautiful thing.”

Fisher agreed and noted that the program offers aid in working toward an accomplishment rather than a handout. “(Keys to Savings) helps people progress from where they are (by helping them with) setting goals while recognizing that God has given them dignity and abilities,” he said. “We want to come alongside and give them reasons to celebrate (their accomplishments).”

An alliance of artists

Visitors browse artworks at the Lancaster County Art Association during an opening reception.

Lancaster County has a longstanding and deep connection to visual art and creatives in the community.

Lancaster city’s historic downtown area is rife with art galleries and painters’ exhibitions, the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design and distinguished museums such as Lancaster Museum of Art and the Demuth Museum. Lancaster-born artists such as Charles Demuth, whose life and work are immortalized in the Demuth Museum, have become nationally renowned for their artistic careers. In modern times, new generations of budding artists such as JJ Roach continue Lancaster’s artistic legacy by achieving recognition across Pennsylvania and beyond.

The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Strasburg, is a countywide network of paintbrushes and sketchbooks. LCAA’s members hail from every part of the county, as well as areas as far as Chester County, Philadelphia and Maryland. The nonprofit’s mission is to celebrate and promote visual arts in the local community, a goal that has remained unchanged since LCAA was founded in 1936.

“We’re still committed to our original idea of promoting the arts in the area,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, who handles LCAA’s publicity and advertising. “We’re always trying to get everyone involved and to give people opportunities to appreciate, understand and see good artwork. Visual arts are important to everybody.”

LCAA strives to support the art community in various ways. The organization’s main location in Strasburg houses the Steinmetz Gallery and the Kauffman Gallery, which frequently feature the artworks of LCAA members and distinguished guest artists. Membership shows take place every

winter, fall and spring, in addition to themed exhibits such as “Cool Colors” in February, which will exclusively feature artworks of green, blue and violet hues.

Until Thursday, Feb. 13, the 2025 Winter Membership Show may be viewed in the Kauffman Gallery, and a showcase of Dan Graziano’s work titled “Observations” will remain in the Steinmetz Gallery.

Although LCAA’s galleries steadily host new exhibitions, the nonprofit also offers a variety of workshops, classes and programs to teach specific techniques and explore different mediums. LCAA organizes fundraisers such as plant sales and art supply sales throughout the year to help cover its expenses, compensate professional jurors for exhibits and lower class enrollment fees.

As an active member of LCAA for more than 35 years, Keller said that one of her favorite aspects of the organization is its comradery. “Whether you’re down there working or part of a critique group, you’re around people who have a common interest,” added Keller. “You meet artists who work with different mediums than you do. It’s interesting to see how things work.”

Despite including many expert artists, LCAA accepts members of any artistic ability. “It’s nonthreatening. That’s what I love about it,” Keller said. It’s an opportunity for anyone to have a creative outlet and a place to

show your work.”

LCAA is seeking volunteers to fill various roles within the organization, including leadership positions on the board of directors and gallery sitters to oversee exhibits when staff members are unavailable. To learn more,

interested parties may attend a board meeting on the third Friday of every month at 10 a.m. LCAA asks that anyone planning to attend a meeting confirm by calling the office at 717-687-7061.

“The key to successfully training a dog is food, food and more food,” said Rineer, a resident of the Buck who frequently travels to UDS’ facility to assist with training. “A lot of people think (service dogs) are working, but for them, it’s like playing ball all day.”

UDS service dogs specialize in different areas, and each canine is matched with a job that complements its personality traits and strengths. Some dogs may have a calming presence that can help anxious children feel more comfortable in school, and others are perceptive enough to recognize the early signs of a traumatic flashback and rush to their owners’ side.

Rineer said the fourth UDS dog she helped train was able to fetch bottles of water from the refrigerator for a client with mobility restrictions. The dog was even able to take the empty bottles to the recycling bin after the owner was finished.

In recent years, UDS has broadened its service area to include clients within five hours of Lancaster County. The number of local school districts

ELDER CARE

requesting a service dog has steadily increased as well, and UDS dogs currently serve nearly every school district in the county. Jennifer King, a member of the UDS service dog ambassador team, said many teachers testify that service dogs have reached students in ways no school staff member was able. “It’s the power of a wagging tail and a wet nose,” King said.

UDS relies on sponsorships and donations from the community to sustain its service dog programs. Each dog requires an investment upward of $25,000 to cover the cost of coaching and food during the 22-month training period, and financial support from individuals and businesses allows UDS to lessen the cost of acquiring a dog for clients.

UDS will hold its annual bingo fundraiser on Sunday, March 9, at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.
