It' s Fair - won't you

THE SOUTHERN LANCASTER COUNTY FAIR ASSOCIATION WELCOMES YOU TO ITS ANNUAL AGRICULTURE FAIR. Experience the same wholesome atmosphere filled with fellowship, food and friendly competition today that the founders of the Solanco Fair envisioned over 60 years ago. In the spring of 1950, a group of farm women enthusiastically decided that the Solanco area needed a fair of its own. With the help of many different community and agricultural-based organizations, in September of that same year, the first Solanco Fair made its debut and was here to stay. The Solanco Fair is not only a vital part of the Southern End community; it reflects the spirit and values of the individuals living in the community. Dedicated citizens volunteer their time and many talents throughout the year to ensure a successful event. At the fair, they can be found diligently working to supervise the many behind-the-scenes details that make the event run like a well-oiled machine. It is with deep appreciation that we say thank you to these friends, businesses and community organizations. Attracting individuals of all ages, the Solanco Fair is a work in progress. Over the years, the fair has both improved

and built new facilities on the fairgrounds, added new entertaining events to its three-day lineup and welcomed new categories in which to display competitive handiwork. While the fair association works to see that the Solanco Fair changes to meet the needs of the growing community, it is also a source of pride that the fair retains much of the same community spirit, volunteer dedication and agricultural heritage as that of the very first fair. Every September in southern Lancaster County you will find FFA and 4-H members grooming their animals for show, proud cooks in their kitchen baking treats for the judges to sample, farmers and gardeners choosing their produce for competition, young children participating in the parades and an overall enthusiastic and excited attitude in the citizens of the Solanco area. One exhibition area where you may be tempted to linger is the Baked Goods Department, where you will find everything from cookies and cakes to muffins and breads. Just looking at them can make you hungry, and if you see something you really like, you may be able to take it home with you. The Baked Goods Department usually draws 350 to 450 entries, according to department co-chair Liz Henry. “On average, we’ve had 130 people entering those entries. A lot of people bring more than one item,” she said. “We have a lot of familiar faces, and The 2019 Solanco Fair will include competitions for the best apple pie, angel food cake, chocolate people come back year after cake, and cookies, brownies, or bars. Introducing The Fair Book Cover Artist By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Megan Plank, daughter of Connie and Guy Plank, is the winner of this year’s Solanco Fair Book Cover Contest. Megan was 13 years old and attending Smith Middle School when she created the cover, which features small farm animals within the word “Solanco,” the fairground’s barns with exhibits, and food popular stands. “I know a lot of people go for the funnel cake and the milkshakes,” she said. Megan was surprised when she found out she was the contest winner. “People from Swift were entering, too, so there were a lot of people entering. I was hoping for the best,” she said. Megan’s mother was also surprised at the win. “I know she’s a very good artist, but it’s a big competition. I was very surprised and excited when she won,” Connie said. “She’s a great kid. I’m very blessed to have her.” Megan has two brothers, Jared and Matthew, and a sister, Taylor. She attends Providence Church, where she is a member of the youth group. She enjoys swimming, spending time with friends, and being with her dogs. To keep in practice with her art, Megan works in her sketch books, primarily drawing with pencils. She also helps friends with their artwork. She likes fashion and makeup, and she plans to play soccer in high school this year. A native to the area, Megan enjoys visiting the

Solanco Fair each year. “I go almost every day,” she said. “I like the fair because it’s a way to be social and see all the different things people bring in to show others. It gives me a chance to hang out with friends and drink the Megan Plank milkshakes and eat the funnel cakes. I like the parade a lot. I like being with my friends and seeing all the cool attractions (the fair has).” At Smith, Megan’s favorite subjects were language arts and art, but in high school, she will be taking science courses to prepare for the future. She plans to become a doctor. “I’m going to try to take some art classes to keep that going,” she said. “I do art in my free time when I get an inspiration. I definitely want to keep in touch with it.”

Solanco Fair Crafts Create A Diverse Display By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

One of the most diverse and visually interesting departments at the Solanco Fair is for crafts. The heading of crafts includes 40 different categories, some of which are broken down into additional sections. Crafts are as diverse as the individuals who create them, with the craftsperson’s personality and imagination as much a part of their creation as their talent in using the material and their care in workmanship. Some of the crafts on display are traditional styles that have been represented since the early days of the Solanco Fair and going back in history even before that. Baskets, ceramics, clay, metal, and woodworking may be

traditional in style or updated to take on a modern look with contemporary colors and designs. Other crafts have somewhat shorter histories, being popularized as hobbies such as tie-dye and string art. Jewelry is a particularly large category with sections for different types that are then further divided by construction method, such as strung, crocheted, or woven beads. “There’s a lot of pottery and ceramics; actually, there’s a little bit of everything,” said Karen Lesley, who has been a member of the Crafts Committee for about eight years. “We have a cone and nut work and seed categories where there are lots of lovely things. Scrapbooking is really popular; we get a lot in that.” Because some crafts have diminished in popularity over the

years, while new ones have surged, the fair periodically revises the entry list to more closely match submissions. “On some things there are trends,” Lesley said. “About four or five years ago we revamped our list for the fair book. Some things we had not seen for four or five years and other things we were seeing that had to be miscellaneous.” Even with the department’s inclusive list, there are always some unusual entries that defy classification, so the miscellaneous section remains an option. Exhibits in the crafts department are divided by age, with divisions and cash prizes for crafters ages 8 to 10, 11 to 13, 14 to 18, and 19 and older. Children ages 7 and under may enter as participants, with no cash awards. All exhibits must have been created since the last fair. They may not be made from kits. Entries are judged on a wide variety of factors, including general impression, craftsmanship, creativity, neatness, and

design. Visitors will want to see all the entries and match their taste to the judges’ trained eye. “I think you find, when you look at the things, you can tell by the workmanship, the appearance, and the color of it,” Lesley said. “I look at it without a judge’s eye, and I can say ‘that’s what I would have picked too.’” Lesley noted that for many years elementary school teachers had encouraged their students to submit crafts they had made in class. As the teachers retired, Lesley saw a bit of a decline in entries, but they appear to be picking up again. Lesley encourages people of all ages to submit entries in the Crafts division. “I just think people need to try and do some of these things. Just try it. It doesn’t have to be perfect,” she said. “Enter it so people can see and understand what you’re about. It’s an expression of personality.”
