Cameron Zook of New Providence is a Solanco High School senior with a knack for baking. But when Zook is in the kitchen, she doesn’t just whip up any kind of pastry; she specializes in making macarons, a French delicacy that is incredibly difficult to make. Zook became interested in baking about four years ago, but she mostly steered clear of macarons after many unsuccessful attempts to make them with various recipes. Zook acquired more experience with working in Cameron Zook’s macarons won fifth place at the 2024 Pennsylvania See Macarons pg 4 Farm Show on Jan. 6.

parent who volunteered is a member of the Quarryville Fire Company, and his crew members happily assisted him while returning from a call. Later that day, one of S h a u b ’s f r i e n d s a s ke d her if Wesley Church had someone to handle the sidewalks regularly. Shaub explained that the driveway is normally plowed by a farmer who works on the property’s fields, but she is responsible for shoveling and salting the sidewalks herself. Shaub’s friend is another member of the Quarr yville Fire Company, and he works for an excavation company; he told Shaub that they would take care of shoveling and salting from now on. S h a u b s a i d t h e f i re fighters’ response moved her to tears. The A-Team’s students are well acquainte d w ith many
members of the Q uarryville and Bart Township fire companies, as they often help out with the ministry’s events. During the A-Team’s open house in August, firefighters tau g ht the k ids ab out fire prevention, let them try on equipment and let them ride in the bucket of a firetruck. The A-Team has formed many bonds with the local community in recent years, but the connection between its students and local firefighters is special - and Shaub will never have to worry about icy sidewalks at Wesley Church again. “It’s always neat to sit back and watch how different organizations in the area have such a heart for our students,” said Shaub. “Knowing we won’t have to worry about the sidewalks is a huge relief. God has placed people here to help us out in a big way.”

to “purchase” baby items they may need by attending classes. “We have parenting classes, birth classes and prenatal classes,” Imchen said. “Each class is worth two points, and they have homework points they can accumulate as well. They use that for cribs, mattresses, car seats or Pack ‘n Plays. Everything is brand new, and it is all donated.” In addition to parenting classes, Cornerstone offers relationship classes. “We have a curriculum that we bring into middle and high schools,” Imchen noted. “We talk about building a healthy relationship, recognizing the warning signs of abuse and breaking abuse patterns.” Cornerstone has presented the program at Solanco High School and at several private schools in the area. Plans call for the program to be presented again in February, which is observed as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. “We have a great relationship with the schools in the
area,” noted Imchen. Cornerstone serves as a resource for women experiencing unexpected pregnancies. It offers free pregnancy testing, ultrasound and prenatal and parenting incentive programs, among other services. “We have more services rather than just pregnancy resources,” said Imchen when explaining the agenc y ’s name change. “We changed over in the summer. We wanted it to be a little more medically focused and encompass more services and include men.” The agency is also working on staffing a mobile medical unit, which it acquired in November. Volunteers are needed to work in the unit, assisting nurses with patient appointments. “We are not using it quite yet. We are working on staffing it,” Imchen said. “It will offer the same services we offer at the office, including pregnancy confirmation and ultrasound and STD testing.”
To schedule a diaper donation, call 717-4428694 or email Imchen at Oli@pacornerstone.org. More information about Cornerstone and its services is available at www .facebook.com/cornerstonereproductivehealth and www.pacornerstone.org.

When temperatures start dropping, it is time to turn up the heat. However, doing so can present the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. People may take various steps to help prevent CO poisoning. Using a battery-operated CO detector will allow homeowners to monitor CO levels in their home and be alerted if the levels get too high. Homeowners should also have chimneys cleaned and inspected each year by a qualified professional. Children and pets, and anything that can burn, should be kept at least 3 feet away from open fires and space heaters. People should ensure their space heaters have been tested to the latest safety standards and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Space heaters should be placed on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, such as ceramic tile floor, not on rugs or carpets or near bedding or drapes. Space heaters should always be plugged directly into electrical outlets; never use power strips or extension cords, as these may overheat and cause a fire. A space heater should
never be left turned on when the home’s occupants are sleeping, and space heaters should not be placed close to any sleeping person. People should always turn off space heaters when they leave the room. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most common symptoms of CO poisoning are
headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, chest pain, weakness, dizziness and confusion. Symptoms mimic flu symptoms, but CO poisoning does not cause a fever. If anyone is experiencing similar symptoms at home, but the symptoms go away when they leave home, they may have CO poisoning; to ensure the person’s safety, 911 should be called.

finally conquer the dessert that had given her so much trouble. The young baker scoured Pinterest and countless Facebook groups for recipes and p o i n te r s , t r y i n g n e w techniques as she strove to master the process. “Macarons are so finnicky; even the humidity plays a role in how they will turn out,” Zook said. “The most difficult aspect is the mixing the batter. If you overmix or undermix the batter by even 20 seconds, the whole batch is ruined.” After a lot of batter, Z ook finally acquired the skills she needed to defeat her challenging (and delicious) advers a r y. Z o o k n o t o n l y became skilled at baking macarons, she also star ted her own business to sell them. Each submission was judged by factors such as taste, visual presentation, texture and creativity. Although the process of perfecting her macarons required a lot of time and effor t, Zook cites their challenging nature as a main factor in her success at the farm show. “Judges don’t see many m a c a ro n s b e c a u s e o f how difficult they are to make, and I believe that made them stand out,” said Zook. “Texture is a huge thing for macarons, too, and you have to find t h e p e r fe c t i c i n g - t o cookie ratio.” After graduating from high school, Zook hopes to attend college to study education, and becoming a teacher has always been one of her ambitions. Zook added that teaching also appeals to her due to its schedule, which would allow her to work on her macaron business when school is not in session. Eventually, Zook hopes to own her own food truck or a small bakery.
