Sometimes, candy does grow on trees BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
If you’ve lived in southeastern Pennsylvania for more than a year, you are likely famili ar w i th the re g ion’s inconsistent weather patterns that accompany the changing of the seasons. As winter draws to a close every year, the frigid nights are contrasted with warm days, confusing local wildlife and Lancastrians
alike. Although it might be inconvenient for residents to leave the house with a warm jacket they won’t need for another 12 hours, the erratic weather makes the area a perfect place to find nature’s sweetest treat: maple syrup. Maple trees that are located in cold climates accumulate sap in their trunks and roots to prepare for winter. In early spring, the trees convert the See Maple sugaring pg 2

Having fun to raise funds for Swift PTO the success of a similar event that her sister organized to benefit a lacrosse team. The proceeds from the bingo fundraiser will aid Swift PTO in its mission to provide students from sixth to eighth grades with educational experiences at school and beyond the classroom. In the past, the group has used its funds to pay for guest speakers at Swift Middle School, field trips and student incentives such as a basketball game between eighth-graders and faculty members. “ We tr y to bring different things to each grade level to offer students new experiences outside of a normal school day,” said Swift PTO president Katina Martin. “It’s a group effort between PTO officers, the principal, school staff, students and families. It takes all hands on deck to make this a success for the students.”

Looking out for the A-Team BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
In January, Quarryville and most other parts of Lancaster County were hit with a brief f l u r r y o f w i n te r w e a t h e r. Although it was short-lived, the frigid temperatures and frosty conditions made local streets much more dangerous for drivers, especially those navigating the Southern End’s winding roads in rural areas. The snow and ice also made it hazardous for many people to use their own driveways, and
some residents who have physical disabilities were unable to clear their sidewalks. On Jan. 8, the foul weather began to concern Tami Shaub in particular. Shaub operates the A-Team, a special needs ministry formerly based out of Wesley Church in Quarryville. Last June, the A-Team moved to its current headquarters, located at 75 Mt. Hope Road, Quarryville, and the group now operates under its nonprofit parent organization, Joyfully Made Fellowship. Shaub only lives See A-Team pg 7

Maple sugaring from pg 1 s a p ’s s t a rc h to s u ga r, after which it is pumped throughout their branches to grow new leaves. The process relies on the alternating daytime and nighttime temperatures to distribute the stored tree sap, as the repeated thawing and refreezing of the liquid allows it to flow to other parts of the tree. Maple trees can be found in other states such as Georgia, but their warm climates render the sap unable to be harvested. For nearly 50 years, the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation’s Environmental Center has organized an annual series to explain the process of extracting maple syrup. by completing a training course offered through a par tnership between Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences and Lancaster EMS. In the first portion of the accelerated program, Beauchamp studied human anatomy and medical science. Once the classes were completed, he trained in the field to learn about patient assessment and other skills necessary to respond to an ambulance call. Beauchamp worked in Lancaster for two years before finding work in Chester County, where most emergencies are handled by first responders who serve as both EMTs and firefighters. “I never had any doubts about becoming a first responder,” Beauchamp said. “You don’t necessarily meet people on their best days in this job, but

After Harry Beauchamp of Lititz graduated from Manheim Township High School in 2015, he decided to take a break from his academic career to explore new oppor tunities. He
wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted to pursue for a career, but he began working at Lancaster General Hospital as he considered different options during his gap year. Beauchamp’s job at the hospital entailed moving equipment and doing general housekeeping tasks. During his breaks, he started to watch episodes of a television show that follows real-life first responders in New Orleans, and it sparked an interest in Beauchamp that would grow into a passion for firefighting. Today, Beauchamp is a volunteer firefighter at the Willow Street Fire Company, and he works full time as an emergency medical technician and firefighter in Parkesburg and Kennett Square. An 18th-century fraktur Easter rabbit in a grain-painted frame will be the project during an upcoming workshop.
Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, L ancaster, will offer a fraktur workshop on Friday, Feb. 23, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Community Room. With the guidance of artists Lynn Sommer and Jim King, each participant will paint an 18th-century fraktur Easter rabbit image in a 6-by-8-inch grain-painted frame. The piece will be ready to hang by the end of the class. Immigrants from southwest Germany brought the custom of the Easter rabbit and colored eggs to North
America in the 1700s. The image inspiring this workshop is attributed to Berks County schoolmaster Johann Conrad Gilbert, who emigrated from Germany in 1757. T h e fe e i nc l ud e s a l l supplies. No experience is necessary. Advance registration is required by Friday, Feb. 16, by visiting www.mennonite life.org/events or calling 717-393-9745. In the case of inclement weather on Feb. 23, this workshop will be postponed to Friday, March 1.
LancasterHistory posts events LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will host several programs. To register, visit www.lancasterhistory.org and click on Events or call 717-392-4633. “Defining Lydia Hamilton Smith” will take place on Thursday, Feb. 15. The lecture will occur at 5:30 p.m. In-person registration is sold out, but members of the public may attend via Zoom. Author Mark Kelley will discuss his newest book, “An Uncommon Woman.” The book is a biography of Lydia Hamilton Smith, a prominent mixed-race
businesswoman in 19th-century Lancaster. Ever since Smith arrived in Lancaster to serve as Thaddeus Stevens’ housekeeper 184 years ago, people have been trying to define her. Stevens’ biographers have noted her importance to the radical congressman. Kelley will discuss what is known about Smith and why her story matters. Kelley holds a Ph.D. in journalism from Syracuse University. He worked for 25 years as a broadcast journalist and has taught journalism and mass communications at various colleges and universities. 10 to 15 minutes away from the new facility, but the back roads she normally takes to get there are especially unsafe after it snows. Shaub messaged members of the A-Team, asking if anyone who lived nearby would be willing to check the building’s sidewalks, and a group member ’s father volunteered. This A-Team member’s parent assured Shaub he would make sure the property was safe for students to arrive for their next program. As Shaub prepared to leave to set up that evening’s pro g ram, she received a picture of firefighters standing outside the building. She initially feared that they were responding to an emergency there, but instead the firefighters had arrived to clear and salt the sidewalks. The parent who volunteered is a member of the Quarryville Fire Company, and his crew members happily assisted him while returning from a call. Later that day, one of Shaub’s friends asked her if she had someone to handle the sidewalks regularly. Shaub explained that the driveway is normally plowed by a farmer who works on the property’s fields, but she is responsible for shoveling and salting the sidewalks herself. Shaub’s friend is another member of the Quarryville Fire Company, and he works for an excavation company; he told Shaub that he and his colleagues would take care of shoveling and salting from now on. Shaub said the firefighters’ response moved her to tears. The A-Team’s students are well acquainted with many members of the Quarryville and Bart Township fire companies, as they often help out with the ministry’s events. During the A-Team’s previous events, firefighters have taught the kids about fire prevention, let them try on equipment and let them ride in the bucket of a firetruck. The firefighters also attended the open house for the A-Team’s new facility to show their support. The A-Team has formed many bonds with the local community in recent years, but the connection between its students and local firefighters is special - and Shaub will no longer have to worr y about A-Team

Penn State Extension will host a Tree Climbing School from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, June 10 to 13, at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Geared for arborists, property managers and foresters, the workshop will teach the basic knowledge and skills required for safe tree climbing and maintenance. Students will not become accomplished climbers; the school will focus on fundamentals and safety. The school will include classroom and
fieldwork focused on safety and safe climbing practices, equipment and use of hand tools, tree terminology, tree disease and insect diagnosis, culture and pruning, tree removal and knots. A great deal of time will be spent in trees climbing. All participants should be in good health and have a desire to work in arboriculture. On the first day, all participants will be asked to sign a waiver. Those who have disabilities that prevent a full range of body motion, who experience difficulty with manual
dexterity, or who have significantly impaired vision should not register for this program. The workshop will take place rain or shine, and participants should dress for the weather. Climbing equipment will be provided; attendees may bring their own gear, but it will be inspected before use. Attendees should bring their own lunch and beverages each day. Space is limited, and preregistration is required at http://tinyurl.com/Tree -Climbing-School-June24.
