¡ Buen trabajo! Bon travail! Buon lavoro!

When Magdalena Hawkins arrived for her freshman year at Solanco High School, foreign language department chair Jen Eisenberger quickly realized she had a prized pupil.

“She arrived armed with pocket dictionaries in her coat pockets and had a passion for learning as much as she could right from the start,” Eisenberger said.

Now a senior, Magdalena is the school’s World Language Student of the Year and was honored as a Student of the Month at a school board meeting on Jan. 27.

Magdalena is currently studying Spanish, French, and Italian and has earned all A grades in those classes. In fact, Magdalena carries a 4.0 grade point average over all her subjects, having never earned anything lower than an A.

“When we sat down as a group to consider who our World

Language Student of the Year would be, Magdalena was the obvious choice,” Eisenberger said.

“It is extremely rare that we have a student enrolled in multiple languages, let alone excelling in each and every one. She genuinely represents the ideal language learner, and lover, as she pours her free time into continuing her studies and helping others.”

Magdalena is an intern in the foreign language department and tutors English language learners and English-speaking students who are studying Spanish, French, and Italian.

Magdalena is in her fourth year of Spanish and has been studying French for three years and Italian for two.

“I’ve always been drawn to (languages),” Magdalena said. “I see it as a puzzle. It’s kind of like connecting different pieces together to create a message or a picture. I’ve always liked puzzles, so I think that’s what drew

Although creativity and composition are considered when photographs are judged in the Octorara Watershed Association (OWA) Photography Contest, the most important characteristic of a winning photo is that it depicts an image of life in the watershed area. “We don’t have strict guidelines because we don’t want to restrict anyone’s creativity, (but we ask), ‘Does this photo represent the Octoraro Watershed in all its diversity and beauty?’” said Chotty Sprenkle, contest coordinator.

The seeds for the annual Lancaster County Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) event were planted in 2013 when pediatrician Dr. Lora Mangus Wenger and her family visited Haiti with members of Willow Street Mennonite Church as part of a Mission of Hope mission trip.

“At that time, (Mission of Hope) was feeding 50,000

children a day by distributing meals to their school, other schools, and orphanages,” Mangus Wenger said. “A warehouse (of food provided by FMSC) was stacked from floor to ceiling with boxes.”

Mangus Wenger had never heard of FMSC before that and decided to do some research after returning home. She discovered there were no MobilePack events taking place in Pennsylvania, so

Documentary screening posted

As part of its On Screen/In Person series, the Arts at Millersville University will present a showing of the documentary “And So I Stayed” on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 6:15 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

“And So I Stayed” is an award-winning documentary about survivors of domestic violence who are incarcerated for killing their abusers in

self-defense. The film’s subjects include formerly incarcerated survivor-advocate Kim Dadou Brown, a driving force in the passage of New York’s Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act (DVSJA). Also featured are Nikki Addimando and Tanisha Davis.

At 6:15 p.m., there will be a pre-show community panel with Whitney Barbusca, a social worker with Penn Medicine Lan -

caster General Health; Mandy Billman, director of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Counseling Center at the YWCA; Fai Hammond, outreach coordinator with Domestic Violence Services; and Heather Girvin, associate professor in the School of Social Work at Millersville University. After the film showing, there will be a question-and-answer session with survivor-advocate

Brown.

This On Screen/In Person event is presented in partnership with the Millersville University School of Social Work. Tickets are free but are required for entry. me the most.”

Magdalena noted her love of languages began at an early age. “My mom (Jill Jablonski) always says as a toddler I used to watch ‘Dora the Explorer’ all the time, and I could count to 10 in Spanish at the age of 2,” she said. “I just have always been drawn to it. (Language classes are) definitely more challenging (than other classes), but also a bit more rewarding because it’s also something I’ll use in my day-to-day life, whereas math I will, but not as much.”

Magdalena is a member of the Spanish National Honor Society and went on the school trip to Spain last year. “My favorite is Spanish, I guess because I’ve been with it for the most,” said Magdalena.

Magdalena is earning her service hours by helping teacher Robin Batista with students in some of her classes.

“I am very lucky to be here at Solanco because both Mrs. Batista and Mr. (Thomas) Tedrow are very, very good teachers. We also have AP Spanish Literature. ... I’m lucky to be here studying literature because it’s very interesting to me.”

Magdalena is appreciative of the support she has received from her mom and her stepdad, Ray Jablonski, as well as her Solanco teachers.

“My teachers have been very supportive of me throughout my efforts, and I thank them dearly for that,” said Magdalena. “I think they are one of the main driving forces for me to continue with these languages.”

She stated that studying three languages simultaneously can be beneficial. “All three of the languages are Romance languages, so all three are from the same language family,” Magdalena said. “That basically means they are going to be similar, but they’re also going to have their differences. The best way I can describe it is it’s kind of like a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum is Spanish. On the other end is French and then right in the middle is Italian. (Italian is) basically a blend of the two. So, I think taking all three is helping with all of them. If I forget a word in one, I remember it in another, and that gives me a hint as to what it would be in the other language.”

Magdalena has also studied Russian and German on her own. “I haven’t studied Russian in a while, but I do want to pick up with it when I get to college,” she said. “I also used to study German, which I’d also like to resume in college.”

Magdalena, who enjoys open world games and puzzles, is undecided about where she will attend college in the fall and is considering Dickinson College and Lycoming College.

“I want to be a diplomat,” she said. “I want to help people solve problems. I think by taking all these languages, I can better help with these problems.” She is contemplating studying Portuguese and Chinese at some point. “My lifelong goal is to learn fiveplus languages to fluency,” Magdalena said. “I think I really kick-started it here in high school.”

Embrace Indoor Greenery

Entries will be judged in three age categories: Adult, age 18 and above; Youth, ages 13 to 17; and Youth 2, age 12 and under. Monetary prizes and ribbons will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place winners in all categories. There will also be a Best of Show winner and a People’s Choice award.

All photographs must be taken within the Octoraro Watershed, which includes Cecil County, Md., as well as the following townships in Pennsylvania: Eden, Bart, Sadsbury (in both Lancaster and Chester counties), Colerain, West Sadsbury, Highland, West Fallowfield, Upper Oxford, Lower Oxford, East Nottingham, Little Britain, Fulton, East Drumore and West Nottingham. All photographs must be identified with their location within the watershed, whether it be the county, township or borough.

Photographs may be color or black and white.

CREEKSIDE FOODS

Photos will be entered and judged in four categories: Wildlife, which includes plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, invertebrates and fungi (no domestic animals); Landscapes, which includes sites, scenery and historic buildings; Agriculture, which is farm-related activities and/or farm landscapes; and Trailcam, photographs captured on remote cameras.

Sprenkle noted that Wildlife is the category that receives the most entries.

“We get a lot of birds and birds at feeders,” she said. “A lot of people are really into taking the time to sit and wait for the right picture at the right time and the right critter.”

In the Landscape category, people will photograph views that are unique to the area. “A lot of times it will be a mill or a springhouse or covered bridges,” Sprenkle said. “Most of the photographs in that category are sunsets and sunrises, storms and rainbows without structures in them, unless it’s a farm complex, which is in the silhouette.”

She pointed out that the Agriculture category was introduced two years ago.

“We are just starting to get entries. We anticipate there will be more this year,” Sprenkle said, noting that the Trailcam entries have also increased. “Trailcam has been increasing every year because more people are putting up trailcams. It’s a lot of fun to see what you’ve got on your trailcam.”

“As part of the contest rules, photos cannot be altered or created with computer programs,” she noted. “However, programs that allow photographers to enhance a photo for color, clarity, exposure, etc., are acceptable.”

All photographs, which must measure 8 by 11 inches or larger, must be mounted on foam or hard cardboard. Entries will be accepted at the OWA office, located inside the West Fallowfield Township Building, 3095 Limestone Road, Suite 7, Cochranville. Photos may be dropped off on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 4 and 5, between 6 and 8 p.m. each evening. Those who are unable to make those dates should contact Sprenkle for alternate arrangements. All photos must be received

Art classes planned for children and caregivers

Children are invited to pair up with a parent or other adult for a series of classes offered through Pennsylvania College of Art & Design’s Center for Creative Exploration (CCE). The classes, led by veteran instructors, are geared toward shared creative experiences, investigating new creative outlets, co-learning, and spending time together. The registration cost covers one adult and one child.

The classes will include Parent + Child: Exploring Alexander Calder, for kids ages 5 to 7, on Wednesday, Feb. 26; Parent + Child: Spring Painting and Movement, for kids ages 4 to 7, on Saturday, March 22; and Parent + Child: Creating a Fabric

All entries will be displayed and the winners will be recognized at the OWA’s annual membership meeting on Thursday, March 27, at 6 p.m. at Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville. Winning photographs will also be featured in the OWA newsletter and on the website.

In addition, the photographs will be part of a traveling display at area libraries, historical societies, local businesses and at schools within the watershed area.

For more information about the contest, contact Sprenkle at csprenkle9 @gmail.com or 610-5932808 or text 484-8885416. More information about the OWA is available at www.theowa.net.

“We had a really great number of entries this year and looking forward to even more robust entries this year, particularly (from) the youths,” said Sprenkle. “We have been working on getting the youths involved through Octorara Area Junior-Senior High School. It’s exciting for me because I can’t wait for the entries to come in.”

Extension to offer health-focused training

Penn State Extension has released an updated version of the Walk by Faith train-the-trainer educational program, offered in partnership with the Penn State Cancer Institute. A training for organizations will be offered on Thursday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement training room at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

Walk by Faith is a community-based program designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle that includes walking, with the goal of helping participants become more physically active and reduce their

cancer risk. The program can be tailored to fit the needs and wants of the community where it is being presented.

During the program, participants set and track personal health goals, supplemented by educational sessions intended to provide additional motivation and support. The toolkit offers resources for educational and motivational presentations, guidance for setting healthy lifestyle and activity goals, and group activities to encourage physical activity and healthy eating.

The curriculum writers noted that local community

organizations implementing the program can reach individuals of various education levels, employment types, and incomes. These community organizations also can provide social support and reinforcement to members, especially if they share a common goal of wanting to change health behaviors.

To register for the training, visit https://extension .psu.edu/walk-by-faith-in structor-training-for-orga nizations. For more information about the Walk by Faith program, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ walk-by-faith-program-in formation.

she and her husband, Todd, and daughters, Anna and Naomi, participated in a MobilePack in New Jersey.

“I thought, ‘We can probably do this ourselves,’” she recalled. Willow Street Mennonite Church got involved and hosted the first Lancaster County MobilePack in 2014. That event attracted 50 volunteers and put together 100,000 meals.

This year will mark a milestone. Because two years were canceled because of COVID, the 10th Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack will take place Friday to Sunday, March 28 to 30, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street.

To date, meals have gone to Somalia, Haiti, Belize, the Dominican Republic, Malawi, Uganda, Jamaica, Poland, Guyana, and Moldova. Over the prior nine events, more than 10,000 volunteers from the community have come together to send more than 2.3 million meals to those most in need around the world, Mangus Wenger said.

This year, the plan is to have 2,000 volunteers work two-hour shifts to pack 400,000 meals in three days. There are no age limitations. For safety and efficiency, studentto-adult ratios are put in place, Mangus Wenger said. Sit-down jobs are available if needed.

Individuals who sign up for a packing shift are encouraged but not

required to make a personal goal of contributing a minimum of $63. At the price of 29 cents a meal, this donation covers the cost of one box of packed meals (216 meals), which is the average amount a single volunteer packs in a two-hour period.

“This food is literally going to those most in need around the world.

Some of the people receiving this food only have one good meal a day,” said Mangus Wenger, who is the Lancaster County FMSC MobilePack chairperson.

Donations may be submitted at www.fmsc.org. Registration is underway and can be completed on the website.

Packing times are March 28 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.; Saturday, March 29, from 9 to 11 a.m., noon to 2 p.m., 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and 5 to 7 p.m.; and March 30 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Some shift times are more popular than others and fill quickly.

FMSC is also committed to helping people closer to home by collecting food for the Lancaster County Food Hub. Volunteers are invited to bring a nonperishable food item that will be donated to the food hub in Lancaster city. Anyone from Lancaster County may receive food from this location.

Items requested include 1-lb. containers of peanut butter; canned meats such as chicken or tuna; 1-lb. bags of white or brown rice;

Memorial Church sets chili dinner

canned fruit in juice or light syrup; pasta, preferably whole wheat; meal helpers; low-sugar breakfast cereal; and low-sodium soup.

Anyone who has never participated in an FMSC event will need to visit www.fmsc.org, set up a username and password to register as an individual or for a group, go to the upper right-hand corner, and click “Log in.” People can then create an account to set up a username and password.

After setting up an account, participants may type “FMSC.org login” into a browser and click on “Volunteer.” People may then reserve the number of spots they will need for their group. Groups may help during multiple shifts, but they should not reserve more spaces than they know they will fill.

“I’m very thankful that so many people are willing to get involved,” Mangus Wenger said. “It particularly makes me happy to see children involved, because I think it’s very important we help them

understand the importance of having adequate food on a regular basis, and how in the United States, we’re very, very blessed. Unfortunately, a lot of children in the world don’t have adequate nutrition. We are able to help them. I am happy to see our community be so supportive.”

To celebrate the 10th event in Lancaster County, Daryl Fulp of Hope for Home Ministries in Guatemala will talk briefly before each packing session about the impact of the volunteers’ work.

UDSF plans annual gala

The United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) has announced that its annual gala, the Diamond Jubilee Gala, will celebrate the organization’s 60 years of service in 2025. The gala will occur on Thursday, May 8, at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. This event will raise funds to support UDSF’s mission to provide personal care and support services for older adults and people with physical disabilities. These services aim to enhance clients’ independence and enrich their lives, along with the lives of their families and caregivers and the community.

Saquon Barkley, running back for the Philadelphia Eagles, will be in attendance at the gala. As part of the event program, Barkley will participate in a fireside chatstyle interview conducted by Eagles insider Dave Spadaro. UDSF is selling tickets to a giveaway drawing; 10 winners will have the opportunity to attend a VIP meetand-greet with Saquon prior to the start of the gala event. Giveaway drawing tickets may be purchased at the UDSF corporate office, 2270

4-H

Erin Court, Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays through Monday, March 31, 2025, or until sold out.

Alternately, they may be reserved at https://ud services.org/gala-raffle -saquon-barkley/ with payment made at a different time.

Winners will be chosen at random from the drawing, which will be livestreamed on Tuesday, April 1, on the “United Disabilities Services Foundation” Facebook page.

At the gala, attendees will enjoy a cocktail reception with passed hors d’oeuvres followed by a full-course dinner with a cash bar. There will also be bidding opportunities on exclusive live and silent auction items, including three autographed items by Barkley, a wine pull, and more.

With a capacity of 500 attendees, the event is anticipated to be UDSF’s largest gala event to date. For more information, visit www .udservices.org, email development@udsfoundation .org, or call 717-682-5575. Sponsorships are available. Individual gala tickets are anticipated to go on sale by the beginning of March.
