Mr. Solanco event will raise funds for post prom

Nine Solanco High School seniors will be vying for the prestigious title of Mr. Solanco.

The Mr. Solanco “pageant” will be held Saturday, March 15, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

The beauty pageant spoof, a fundraiser for Solanco’s post prom event, will feature Noah Bailey, Addison Beiler, Justin Natale, Austin Jarabak, Nathan Baglio, Garrett Grove, Nicholas Mohler, Braedon Bickford, and Carter Galbreath.

Mr. Solanco is a fundraiser for the seniors’ post prom event. The prom will be held Saturday, May 17, at the Wyndham Lancaster Resort and Conference Center. The post prom festivities will take place at the Southern End Community Association (SECA) and will begin at 11 p.m. There will be group games, inflatables, food, and giveaways.

Mr. Solanco will begin with all of the participants performing a dance routine choreographed by Solanco seniors Emileigh Kreider and Claire Graybeal followed by a swimwear/beachwear competition, talent contest, formal wear competition, and question-and-answer session. A panel of judges will vote, and the winner will be crowned Mr. Solanco. There will be prizes for the first runner-up and second runner-up; Mr. Congeniality, voted on by the competitors; and Mr. Popularity, voted on by the student body and those attending the event.

Solanco High School athletic

director Anthony Hall will be the master of ceremonies.

“The kids are putting themselves out there and having a lot of fun doing it,” said the event’s

organizer, Carol Graybeal. “They realize what they’re doing is raising money for their post prom.”

Mr. Solanco is a beauty pageant spoof, but that doesn’t mean the

contestants don’t take the event seriously. Competitors are practicing two or three days a week for 30 minutes at a time.

“They are really investing a tremendous amount of time,” Carol said. “They are doing a great job. The dance is going to be phenomenal.”

She is grateful for the competitors’ commitment. “They’re dedicated,” Carol said. “Some of the students aren’t in the building that much, but they’re coming in for practices. They’re taking the dance as seriously as teenage boys can take a dance. I’m happy with my crew.”

“The post prom is a safe place for kids to go after the prom,” Carol said. “The money raised

The Mini Mules keep getting bigger.

In its third year, the youth field hockey program based in Quarryville has 88 participants this winter after having 60 kids last year and 40 in the first season.

“It’s really nice,” said Mini Mules founder Whitney McGinn, who is also Solanco High School’s varsity field hockey coach. “And also, we have a lot of alumni that come back and help with it. We opened it up this year so that junior high girls could help coach, and nearly every junior high girl signed up. I think it’s a good experience in leadership and coaching. A lot of girls want to ref. It’s helping to grow the game even outside our district.”

While most of the girls are

Men and women within a 100-mile radius of Lancaster city who are interested in playing can contact league president Dave Dean at 610-334-1124 or email treasurer Dave Zerbe at dzerbe@comcast.net.

Strasburg. “Anybody interested in playing should call or email and give us your contact information so we can follow up with you. But if there are people who can’t play anymore, but would like to help coach, we’d be interested in those people.”

Each team has a coach and an assistant coach, and some serve as league officers and board members.

Last year’s teams were Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant (home field at Rapho Park), LH Brubaker Appliances (Garrett Field), RH Cooper & Son (Rapho Park), Speedwell Construction (Rapho Park), Ephrata Good’s Disposal (Ephrata Middle School), Kautz Construction (Garrett Field), Strasburg (Strasburg Jaycee Park), TJ Rockwell’s (Rapho Park), Caruso’s Pizzeria (Rapho Park), GE Richards Graphic Supplies (Garrett Field), Mid Penn Bank (Ephrata Middle School), and Steel Fab Enterprises (Garrett Field).

Players do not have to play with the team based closest to their homes.

“It’s competitive,” Zerbe said. “These fellas, most of them have been playing some sort of organized ball in high school right through college and in different softball leagues as they got older and still enjoy the game.”

The median age of players in the league is 64, Zerbe said.

Teams will begin practicing in April, and there will occasionally be in-season practices. The season will start in either the last week of April or first week of May with one or two games a week. The seven-inning games will start at 6 p.m. and will generally be over by 7:15 or 7:30, Zerbe said.

It is a modified league, which means pitchers throw as fast as they can while using a bowling-style motion, Zerbe explained. There is no sliding or base stealing. American Softball Association (ASA) rules and ASA umpires are used.

“We do have fun, but it can get very competitive,” said Zerbe. “You have different calibers of teams. You have some teams where guys are just trying to have fun and enjoy the game. If they win, they win. If they lose, they lose. Other guys like to win and win it all.”

In addition to Rapho Park in Mount Joy, Ephrata Middle School, Garrett Field in Willow Street, and

There were 17 regular-season games last year, with that total depending on the number of teams in the league. The regular season is slated to finish at the end of July, followed by the double-elimination playoffs with all teams qualifying and seeded based on record. A champion is crowned from both divisions.

Zerbe is hoping to attract more

players for the 2025 campaign. “It seems like we’re struggling with having fellas in their early 50s who are excited about continuing to play softball,” he said. “Some of the guys are coming back and playing, but

Mini Mules

Mini Mules, which is held in the Smith Middle School gym, is divided into two groups, one for first- through third-graders and another for fourththrough sixth-graders.

In addition to introducing girls to field hockey, McGinn hopes Mini Mules will eventually help the high school program. “It’s a good feeder program,” she said. “The nice thing is as we are starting to get more kids in, we can put them with their school. In the older group, we have two and a half teams that are all Solanco, which is nice because you have the fifth- and sixth-graders who are going to be playing together (when they get to the junior high program). We’ve seen the numbers grow on junior high, and junior high had a good season (last fall). We attribute it to them getting experience through this program the last three years. They have a basic understanding of the game when they get to junior high.”

Having Solanco’s junior high and high school players coach and referee Mini Mules’ practices and scrimmages provides them with a fresh perspective. “I think they get a better understanding of the game and the positioning,” said McGinn. “They understand more when we’re telling them something in a drill. They see it now from the coach’s point of view. They also get a better understanding of patience and how much patience it takes as a coach. They love it. There are kids and parents who request these coaches every year because they have such a great experience.”

Solanco sophomore Katelyn Masterson enjoys coaching and refereeing. “These kids are the next generation of hockey players,” she said. “They have a great opportunity to do this, and I think we can help them.”

Katelyn stated that she emphasizes teamwork and communication to the younger girls and encourages them to become friends with their teammates.

McGinn is grateful many former Solanco players assist with Mini Mules. Julianna Tice, a 2023 graduate, enjoys watching the girls improve. “I love the kids. They love me,” she said. “I’ve known a lot of them since they started field hockey. It’s been pretty cool to watch them grow. I had the older group, the fourth- through sixth-graders, when they were in the younger group. Even from the start (of the winter program in January) to tournament day (in March), it’s amazing watching them develop and understand what they’re doing.”

Amanda Grumbling, a 2001 Solanco graduate, helps with the coaching. Her three daughters, Cassidy, who is in sixth grade, and twins Amber and Kinsey, who are in third grade, participate in Mini Mules. “It’s a really great program to get these kids involved and excited about field hockey without pressure,” Amanda said. “It’s great they’re learning the

sport at a young age. That way, they can keep going with it.”

She noted it’s important to reach the aspiring players early in life. “They pick up skills so quickly when they’re young,” Amanda said. “They work together well. They get to be with kids they don’t see during the day. It’s really cool to see.”

Mini Mules practices begin in January and run through the end of February, concluding with an in-house tournament in March. There is also a Mini Mules summer camp, and McGinn said she is considering an after-school program at the district’s elementary schools.

For more information about the Mini Mules, go to www.solanco sd.org and click on the Athletics tab, email solancofh@solanco.com, or visit the program’s social media sites on Facebook (Solanco Field Hockey) and Instagram (@solancofh).

recruiting new fellas seems to be a little harder.”

The requirements are simple. “You have to have a love of the sport, baseball or softball,” said Zerbe. “You have to love the sport to want to play. You have to have a little bit of competitive spirit and ability to play. That being said, if you want to enjoy and meet some good fellas who are unified in their ability to play and want to play, then come join us. It’s good exercise. The older we get, the more we move and the more we stay active, the longer we’re going to live. If you can come out and one night a week you run and bat and throw the ball, it keeps your blood pumping and it keeps you young. Come out and have a good time and enjoy the camaraderie. You can meet people and become friends.”

Mr. Solanco

from pg 1

(from Mr. Solanco) all goes to the activities for the kids to hang out after the prom.”

The Mr. Solanco participants are excited to be performing in front of an audience. “I just think it’s a fun thing to do to raise money for post prom and show my personality a little bit,” Austin said. “It’s been fun hanging out with everybody and getting to know the dance we’re doing.”

Nathan said, “It’s just the group of guys who were joining. I’m friends with all of them. It’s a cool group of guys. It’s a blessing to do this my final year, and the dance we’re doing is pretty fun.”

Addison stated he is happy to be raising money for post prom. “This grade means a lot to me, and I want to go out with a bang,” he said.

“It’s been pretty fun meeting with the guys and trying to learn a dance,” Carter said. “It’s been an enjoyable few weeks. I’m not very good at dancing, but it’s fun to try.”

Braedon said, “It’s been great working with all of these people. I will probably be more nervous when I am actually doing it in front of people, but originally when I started, I was worried about it. Now I just think it’s going to be fun and I’m not really as nervous.”

Community members can make donations to the post prom event by emailing solanco.post prom2025@gmail.com.

“Mr. Solanco is one of our biggest fundraisers,” Carol said.
