Solanco Quiz Bowl team wins trophy in first season

Solanco High School’s Quiz Bowl team knows how to make a debut.

Competing in the Lancaster-Lebanon Quiz Bowl League for the first time, Solanco brought home the Division II championship trophy following the league playoffs at Warwick Middle School on Feb. 3.

As one of the top four Division II teams during the regular season, Solanco was invited to the Division I playoffs. After the first round of the Division I playoffs, the top two Division II teams squared off in a separate championship with Solanco

up of Mia Daniel-Morales, Lucy Costigan, Amitai Kauffman, Brianna Harvey, Lexi Groff, Rhiannon Groff, and Aidan Rice.

“I think we had more experience,

knowing some of the questions, and the students really practiced some questions we were deficient on the first time out,” said coach Caley Roark, who is a gifted education teacher at Solanco. “And a lot of it is situational depending on the questions that are asked.”

Roark noted he was not surprised by the team’s success.

“Pretty good season,” he said.

“I thought we would do well considering we were in the new division (for new teams and smaller schools than Division I).

I thought we would be competitive because especially Tai Kauffman and Lexi Groff are very knowledgeable about spe cific areas.”

Anthony Kirchner has reclaimed the top spot.

Anthony, a 14-year-old tennis player from New Providence, is still 18 months away from entering high school, but he is regarded as the top college recruit in the nation for the Class of 2030.

A seventh-grader who is homeschooled by his mother, Julie Kirchner, Anthony was ranked No. 1 on the latest Head Recruiting List. Head is the brand name of a company that manufactures tennis rackets.

Anthony had been ranked first for a year and a half before dropping down to fifth. On the heels of an appearance at a tournament in France, he is now back on top. “Hopefully I can sustain it for a long period of time,” he said.

Anthony is already attracting attention from many colleges, including NCAA Division I schools Duke, Virginia, Cornell, George Mason, the University of

Dorothy and Phil Smith of Salunga will have the first show they’ve written performed by an official theater organization for the first time when the Promise Players perform its spring musical in March.

The Smiths and their son, C.J., teamed to pen “Muddled Memories: A Bible Journey,” a family-friendly, staged musical with a lighthearted look at Bible memories with something seriously muddled in the

emu, and a super man.

Dorothy, the show’s director, wrote the dialogue and contributed some of the lyrics. Phil, the musical director, and C.J., a professional musician who now lives in Allentown, wrote the music and the majority of the lyrics.

“Probably my favorite thing musically is directing and/or hearing something I’ve composed being performed. That is a big joy,” said Phil, who is also the director of the Bainbridge Band and writes some arrangements for that group.

Bible Journey” is a comedy featuring puns and plays on words, Dorothy said. “We take a series of Bible stories, and we muddle something in the middle,” she said. “We try to follow true to the message behind the Bible story, and we do emphasize that. It’s just in the acting out of it we twist some things.”

For example, the musical features Garden of Sweden instead of the Garden of Eden. “Rather than having people naked on stage and realize they’re naked, we pretend they’re in Sweden, and not realizing it’s cold until the apple is eaten. Then they’re freezing,” Phil explained.

The group puts on two shows a year, a play in the fall and a musical in the spring. The productions traditionally raise money for a Christian nonprofit. This spring, the beneficiary is the Manheim Community Life Group’s Home on Ferdinand, a transitional living program designed to provide support for women and children currently facing homelessness.

it. And I’m doing my 40th show this spring.”

Hess has seen the Promise Players come a long way. “I didn’t know much about the ministry until I started getting involved with it,” said Hess. “The original director (Creighton) wanted something that was not secular, that was all sacred, all religious, that you could have fun with it and a lot of comedy. And it had to have a message. It started very slowly, and

“It always feels good,” Dorothy said. “We have benefited a number of nonprofits. They always are appreciative, and it’s always nice to give back to the community.”

The Promise Players group has been doing just that since Doreen Creighton founded it 25 years ago. Ken Hess was a member of the original troupe and is still active.

“I never thought I could act,” Hess said. “Never, ever, ever. That wasn’t on my radar. One time they needed a Lazarus and asked if I would do it. The choir director at the church I was attending asked me to do it. I said I had never done anything like this before. He said, ‘Well, we’ll teach you.’ That was the beginning, and I fell in love with

Amitai, a junior, was the second-highest individual scorer in the entire league, averaging 100 points per game, and won the Best and Fairest award for leadership and teamwork, based on voting by the league’s coaches.

“Overall, it was a really good experience in teamwork and leadership,” Amitai said. “To work with my teammates and accomplish something collectively and earn a trophy was the most important part of it for me.”

Amitai was inspired by three older sisters, Ashira, Rivkah, and Aliyah. “I credit a lot of my knowledge to my family,” said Amitai. “They dragged me into a lot of varied studies. … They encouraged me to get into scholarly interests and learn about things that are useful to me.”

Lexi, a senior, was another one of the team’s top players. “I was a little nervous about doing this because I didn’t think I was very good at trivia,” Lexi said. “I’m definitely not brave enough to talk a lot, but I really enjoyed it. I started studying everything literature-related because it was so much fun.”

Lexi enjoyed the experience so much that she plans to play in college. “If there’s no team at the college I choose, I will start one,” she said. “I’m determined.”

Lexi stated that team camaraderie is crucial. “Not only are we able to pick up knowledge, I think we bonded and meshed very well,” she said. “Because

we were able to be friends, we worked hard because we were dedicated to each other and wanted to see each other succeed.”

Roark said, “They definitely pushed each other to get better. As the season went on, they recognized each other’s strengths. Lexi at the beginning of the year was identified as someone who would be good at literature. She worked really hard to get good at literature and learn everything she could. At the end of the season, if there was a literature question, nine out of 10 times she would know it. By knowing their strengths so well, they could fill in the gaps.”

Quiz Bowl tests students in a variety of areas. “The questions cover all subject areas focusing on literature, science, and history, to a lesser degree arts and computational math,” said Roark. “There are some questions they need to solve with pen and paper. There is some current events and pop culture thrown in, too.”

Solanco did not fare well enough in the playoffs to advance in the Division I tournament, but the team has been promoted to Division I for next season because of its finish in Division II.

Solanco was 15-3 in the regular season, finished third in its division in a tournament at Penn Manor on Dec. 3, and competed on an episode of WGAL’s Brain Busters, winning one of two games in a show that aired Feb. 10.

The GIANT Company has announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative, which is in its fifth year. Customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, buy a reusable bag, or convert their choice points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs now through Sunday, March 31.

To launch the program, The GIANT Company will donate $100,000. Through the more than $7.6 million provided to schools through the Feeding School Kids program, public school districts

have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs. In 2024, for example, Eastern York School District covered negative student lunch balances and provided nutritious breakfasts to students on state-mandated testing days, impacting 2,200 students. In addition, the volunteer organization NutriPacks served 800 students each week, providing access to nutritious food on weekends and school breaks.

Saad, a native of Argentina, who has coached pro players, including Laura Granville, is encouraging Anthony to use a more aggressive style.

“The problem was I played defensive because my lessons were based off of playing points,” said Anthony. “When I played points and I was playing adults, I would just get the ball back because of the power. I got comfortable doing that.”

Anthony is also focusing on getting faster and stronger. “My coach wants me to do a lot more fitness training, a lot more than tennis training,” Anthony said. “He tells me to listen to him and trust the process.” Once it gets warmer, Anthony will practice approximately two and a half hours every day.

Saad is impressed by what he has seen so far. “Anthony surprised me how quick he picks up on the coaching,” he said. “He’s a competitive animal and has great tennis IQ. What I am doing is giving him the tools to channel all his talent.”

Saad stated Anthony has unlimited potential. “Many players can achieve being a professional tennis player,” said Saad. “To make a living as a tennis professional player is way more difficult. ... I don’t have a crystal ball. I can say that Anthony is a unique talent. The projec-

tion is the sky for this kid.”

Anthony plans to play in an indoor tournament Friday and Saturday, March 7 and 8, in Medford, N.J. It is a 16-under Level 5 tournament where Anthony will be one of the youngest players in the draw. He will also participate in the Hits for Hope charity event at Conrad Weiser Middle School in Robesonia.

He has his eyes set on a Level 1 tournament in Chicago over Thanksgiving. Last year he defeated the seventh seed in the opening round before losing. “This year I really want to do a lot better,” Anthony said.

He has won several tournaments and sportsmanship awards in his career. Anthony resides in the Solanco School District, but Solanco High School does not have a boys’ tennis team. He is considering attending Conrad Weiser High School, whose tennis team is coached by Ryan Knarr. Knarr is also president of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Middle States and has been a big influence on Anthony.
