Solanco

Solanco High School’s FFA club wanted to try something different, so the group decided on a fundraiser that will appeal to its members and the whole community.
The inaugural Solanco FFA Tractor Pull hosted by the Solanco Fair Association will be held Saturday, April 12, at the Solanco Fairgrounds, Park Avenue, Quarryville. Registration will begin at
8 a.m., and the pulls will start at 10 a.m.
There is a hooking fee for anyone planning to pull, but there is no cost for spectators.Trophies will be awarded to the winners. Tractors will compete by weight class in two categories: antique (before 1960) and modern (1960 to 1980).
“We were trying to think of different fundraisers to do that we hadn’t done before because the community was showing us they
were getting bored of the same fundraisers every single year,” said club president Kaylee Appel. “We are doing this to give some variety. We were coming up with different ideas, stuff our members would be interested in, but also things our community would be interested in. We kept going back to the (Solanco) Fair, where everybody crowds around the tractor pulls, and people really like watching that. We decided to do a tractor pull with the FFA and

Quarryville Borough will give people a chance to decipher the phrase that pays in Peeps.
Peeps in the Park will be held Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to sunset in Huffnagle Park, 20 Oak Lane, Quarryville.
Twenty-three colorful wooden Peeps will be hidden in the park. Each Peep will have a letter on it. Participants will be tasked to
find all the Peeps, keep track of the letters, and unscramble the letters to form a spring-themed phrase. Participants should email the phrase to assistant borough manager Michelle Evans at evansm@quarryvilleborough .com, and all correct answers will be entered into a drawing for a Peeps-themed prize pack.
“It’s just a fun family thing to do in the spring weather,” Evans said. “We’re trying to

Chapter chaplain Logan O’Donnell noted that it’s a natural fit, and he expects most club members to participate. “I think the tractor pull ties in with the FFA because it’s an ag fundraiser, and I feel like it will be a fun event for our students and the community,” Logan said.
Madison Aaron, the club’s reporter, said the Solanco FFA meets every Tuesday during school and also has an official monthly meeting.
Adviser Kayla Stauffer stated the club has 50 members, with about 35 of them active. Vice president Claire Graybeal said National FFA Week, which is held annually in the third week of February, is a highlight of the year. Club members typically spend Presidents Day together since there is no school. On the Thursday of FFA Week, members rise at 4 a.m. to prepare breakfast for students and teachers and donate the proceeds to charity.
In January, Solanco FFA members Kaylee, Claire, Sarah Martin, and Zoey Miller earned Keystone Degrees, the highest degree that a state FFA association can present to its members.
First-year FFA members Nicholas Mohler, Callie Spangler, Mallie Touchton, Adah Mellott, Lydia Hess, Grace Taylor, and Kathryn Rineer received their official FFA jackets.
Thirteen Solanco FFA members attended the Agricultural Cooperation Establishes Success (ACES) conference over the weekend of Feb. 15 and 16. Stauffer
said students learned valuable leadership skills including topics on motivation, habits, resilience, stress management, professionalism, mentors, decision making, unity, and FFA knowledge.
A group of FFA members attended the Lancaster County Next Generation Day Conference. “Students were able to learn how to artificially inseminate a cow, how to use drones to increase crop yields, and experienced a career fair to learn about various job opportunities and colleges related to agriculture,” Stauffer said.
Club treasurer Emmy Rineer touted the camaraderie in the group. “Our members enjoy having their friends in the club and be with their friends while serving the community,” said Emmy. “Being with your friends makes it more fun.”
Emmy added that the club performs community service activities, including picking up trash along the roads and helping with registration at the Solanco Fair.
Zoey, who serves as vice president, said, “I feel like FFA opens many opportunities for members. I know some people have gotten jobs through FFA, have gotten many different opportunities from it, like going to college.”
Zoey also said the club can impact many aspects of life. “It gets people involved in their community, knowing that FFA is more than just farming,” she said. “Any business is tied into agriculture somehow, not just farming.”
The Solanco Cross Country and Track Alumni Association will host a Solanco Track and Field Alumni Night on Monday, April 14, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Art Harrington Track Complex at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. The event will coincide with Solanco’s varsity track meet against Manheim Central and will feature an induction ceremony for the 2025 Class of the Solanco Track and Field Hall of Fame, starting at 4:30 p.m.
The 2025 class includes Steve King, Jim Shillow, Bert Hampton, Tom Regan, Dave White, Ben Work, Janice Guyll-Shields, and Vivian Murray-Tiller.

An upcoming borough activity is for the dogs. The Quarryville Community Dog Park will hold its grand opening Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The dog park is adjacent to the SECA Pool in Memorial Park, Park Avenue, Quarryville.
There will be food trucks, vendors, and a dog walk around the park. “It’s a place where people can gather with friends and let their dogs walk or run,” said Evans.
The borough’s second annual Spring Fling is back by popular demand. It will be held Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7.
The Community Yard Sale will run on that Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the following day from 8 a.m. to noon. “It was a huge success (last year),” Evans said. “There were a lot of yard sales and a lot of people in the borough.”
Some local businesses will hold sidewalk sales, and there will be food trucks throughout the borough. Anyone interested in holding a yard sale or sidewalk sale should email Evans.
The Spring Fling will be capped off on Saturday by Cruise Night, sponsored by the Quarryville Lions Club and Quarryville Borough.
The car cruise will be held in Memorial Park from 4 to 8 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, June 8. Donations will be accepted for the admission fee. Pets and alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
Antique cars, hot rods, muscle cars, classic cars, and trucks from 1993 and older are welcome. There will be door
prizes and food sold by the Wakefield Lions Club. DJ Ray will play ‘50s and ‘60s rock ‘n’ roll music.
Borough residents will be asked to paint the town red, white, and blue for the fifth annual Patriotic Porch Decorating Contest.
Preregistration is required by Friday, June 27, and can be accomplished by calling the borough office at 717-786-2404 or by emailing Evans.
Judging will take place on Tuesday, July 1, beginning at noon. Prizes will be awarded to the top five finishers.
Decorations must be suitable for public viewing by people of all ages. Graphic violence or gore, business advertising, and political messages, symbols, or words are not permitted.
Quarryville Borough will hold its first movie night on Friday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Huffnagle Park. The movie that will be shown has not been determined. People should bring their own chairs.
Popcorn and snow cones will be provided at no charge. The movie night will be sponsored by Upright Garage Door Solutions.
The borough is planning a sidewalk chalk contest for kids in August, and the popular Christmas in Q’Ville event will return in December.
“We are trying to do things for the community and make a positive impact on the people who live in this area,” Evans said. “These are good ways to get to know people in the borough, including members of the borough staff as well as members of the Quarryville Police Department. We have had nothing but positive feedback on all of our events. These are things we’ve always wanted to do, and we will continue to do them as long as people are interested.”

Like golfers who win the Masters Tournament and the green jackets tailored for them, Good Samaritan Services (Good Sam) and Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) are ideally suited for one another. The two community-minded organizations are once again linking up for the 18th annual EPC Golf Outing benefiting Good Samaritan Services.
The charity event will be held Friday, June 6, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. There will be two sessions of golf. The first will tee off at 7:30 a.m., and the second will start at 1:30 p.m. A light breakfast and a chicken barbecue lunch will be served to the morning groups; the afternoon groups will receive a light caf é
lunch and a chicken barbecue meal for dinner. The deadline to register is Friday, May 23. Go to https:// epcgolfouting.com for more information and to register.
Individuals or businesses that wish to sponsor the event or provide prizes can visit the aforementioned website or email EPC marketing and communications director Dan Silva at marketing@ engleonline.com.
“We want to be involved with the communities we serve,” said Jocelyn Engle, who is EPC’s publisher. “We know that some people just need an extra boost in times of need, and this was a perfect fit for us.”
Rachel Shelley, the director of marketing for Good Samaritan Services, agrees. “We love our partnership with EPC,” said Shelley.
“Obviously, the funding that comes from the golf outing is helpful in supporting our mission (and) funding the work that we do in the community. Also, EPC is obviously so well-connected, and this is a great awareness-building event for us, too.”
Good Sam has locations across Lancaster and Chester counties and every day serves about 300 people who are in crisis. “Our mission is to respond with compassion to individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness,” Shelley said.
Anyone who needs assistance from Good Samaritan Services can go to https://goodsamservices.org. A Good Sam representative will conduct a screening via a phone

The Strasburg Area Senior Citizens will gather on Wednesday, April 16, at 1 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. After a meeting, keyboardist Nick Viscuso will present music.
Guests are welcome. There is a nominal registration fee at the door to cover the fire hall rental.
Strasburg Seniors is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1966 for the benefit of area residents age 50 and older. Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of every month, and the club also holds a summer picnic and yearly Christmas party as well as outings and trips.

by vendors. The inside sale will be held rain or shine; if it rains, the outside sale will be held the following Saturday, April 26.
Middle Octorara will sell breakfast sandwiches in the morning and hot dogs, sauerkraut, and barbecue for lunch. There will also be a baked goods table, and the church’s chocolate, peanut butter, and coconut cream eggs will also be for sale.
Last year, the church had 45 tables inside and 40 vendors outside. “It’s so big, and there’s just a variety of stuff,” said co-organizer Dan Henry. “You can come and find a bargain or a treasure.”
Middle Octorara has been holding its spring yard sale for more than 30 years, and it has proven to be exceedingly popular. “We are blessed,” Dan said. “Year after year we have a super turnout. Usually when we open the door at 7 (a.m.), there are anywhere from 30 to 50 people waiting. I am amazed at the amount of people who get here at 6 or 6:15 (a.m.) and are waiting at the door to get in.” Proceeds from the yard will benefit Middle Octorara’s sister church, which is located along the Amazon River in Tamshiyacu, Peru. Middle Octorara first became involved with the Peru church through Dan’s brother, Dave, who was pastor of a church in Jefferson City, Mo. Dave recently returned from a mission
trip to Peru with nine other people. Several Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church members have been to Peru on mission trips in the past, but not since the pandemic.
Middle Octorara has helped its Peruvian counterparts with clean water, mosquito nets, and medical supplies.
In 2008, the Quarryville church donated funds for a new sanctuary in Tamshiyacu. Middle Octorara had just received a bequest from a congregant who had passed away. Shortly after the church voted to donate money, the Peru church’s roof was destroyed in a storm. In the summer of 2008, Middle Octorara church members visited Peru and dug the footers by hand to get the project started.
“It was God’s timing,” Dan said. Call the church at 717-786-3402 for more information, and call Dan at 717-381-9947 to reserve a space outdoors. The deadline for registration is Thursday, April 17.

EPC is carrying on a family tradition started by company founder Alvin Engle, who was Jocelyn’s grandfather. Alvin was involved with numerous philanthropic endeavors and set the tone for the company going forward, Jocelyn said.
Since its inception, the golf outing has generated nearly $300,000 for neighbors in need. “We want to make the experience memorable for golfers and also make sure community members are aware of what Good Sam does,” Jocelyn said. “We want to (send the message) that everyone is included. We want to make sure (the golf outing is) affordable for everybody to take part. I think what’s so neat about our event is we’ve had so many returning sponsors and golfers because it is something people look forward to every year.”
Many of Good Sam’s 30 staff members will volunteer at the golf event. “Our staff loves coming to the golf outing,” Shelley said. “It’s such a cool day for our staff. A lot of them are working directly with the people we serve every day providing case management, and it’s a heavy job. It’s important, important work. It’s really important for our staff to come on the day of the golf outing and see the community support for the work that they’re doing.”
Good Samaritan Services executive director Nate Hoffer will attend the outing. “His true passion for what he and his team members do has been fun for us to watch as an organization, because we know everyone is being taken care of by Good Sam,” said Jocelyn.
Only 3% of Good Samaritan Services’ budget is funded by the government. “People have been

generous and kind in supporting and believing in the work we do,” said Shelley.
Good Sam will be expanding its impact with two homes in Phoenixville. It will be the first time Good Sam will offer housing for women in Phoenixville. The homes will continue to provide safe housing for women facing homelessness, with the added resources of Good Sam.
Shelley stated Good Sam takes an individualized approach to caring for clients. “Everyone in crisis has their own individual story,” she said. “They are on a unique path on how they are going to reach stability.”
Clients meet one-on-one with a resource coordinator, who provides case management with “bite-size goals” for them to work on, Shelley said. She added Good Sam team members “take this large problem of crisis and break it into sizable goals while walking alongside them in that journey and equipping them with tools.”
There are no quick fixes. The goal is to remove any barriers that might be in the way of clients achieving long-term housing stability.
Courtney and her 3-year-old daughter, Cherish, were the first family to move into Good Samaritan Services’ Lancaster city residence for women and children, which opened last year.
“Good Sam Services has gone out of their way to make sure I have everything I need and more,” Courtney said. “The opportunities I’ve received are truly a blessing. They helped keep me going when I could have quit, and I’m so grateful for their support. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe.”
