Take The Name - And Cutout - Of Jesus With You By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The character of Flat Stanley was introduced to the world by his creator, the late Jeff Brown, in 1964. The little boy who was flattened by a falling bulletin board and subsequently mailed around the world rose to fame in 1995 after a thirdgrade teacher in Ontario created The Flat Stanley Project to improve literacy and foster an interest in learning about varied places and people. In the early 2000s, Flat Stanley made appearances with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, and multiple presidents, and he orbited the Earth on the Space Shuttle Discovery. Flat Jesus made his debut at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, earlier this summer. The project was introduced as a way to keep church members connected to Christ and to each other,
whether they are quarantined at home or traveling the world. Parishioners have been encouraged to take Flat Jesus with them wherever they go and to photograph the activities: going out to dinner, relaxing at the beach or the mountains, spending time with friends or relatives, eating ice cream cones, or even doing chores. At the end of the summer, the photographs will be reviewed, and prizes will be awarded. Categories will honor the Flat Jesus characters that are the most creatively decorated, visited the most places, and traveled the farthest distance. “We hope it will be an amazing adventure and a great way to remember that Jesus is always with us, wherever we go,” said CLPC pastor John Hartman. “Who knows? It just might start up a conversation with someone about who Jesus is, what we are doing, and why.” Community members are invited to
participate in the Flat Jesus project as well. Anyone who would like to receive their own copy of the character may contact CLPC at office@chestnutlevel.org or 717-548-2763. Additionally, guests are welcome to join CLPC at its two worship services on Sunday mornings. At 8 a.m., worship is held outside the Family Life Center. Attendees may bring chairs or blankets to sit on the lawn, or they may remain in their vehicles in the parking lot and listen to the service on the radio at FM 102.1. In the event of inclement weather, the 8 a.m. service will be held inside the building. At 10 a.m., a second worship service is held in the Family Life Center and simultaneously broadcast on Zoom and Facebook Live. Masks are required to attend in person, and seating will be socially distanced. Individuals may contact the church for more information.
Motorcycle Ministry To Offer Coffee Break
Local Author Offers Publishing Advice By Dayna M. Reidenouer
When it comes to publishing a book, there are primarily two ways to go: traditional or independent. Former Quarryville resident Lindsay Bandy opted to follow the traditional route for her historical novel, “Nemesis and the Swan,” which will be released in October. Lindsay first realized that she wanted to become a published author while an English major at Millersville University in the mid-2000s. As a teenager, Lindsay had used poetry as a way to process her emotions, but when she began publication, she discovered that it is difficult to get poetry published. Instead, she started writing her first historical novel. “I had no idea what I was doing, but it was really fun for me,” Lindsay Lindsay Bandy is the new youth services coordinator for recalled. the Manheim Community Library. The former Quarryville After graduating, Lindsay married resident is the co-regional adviser of the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and See Local Author pg 6 Illustrators and is publishing her first book this fall.

The Saddlebag Riders TEAM of Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries has hosted an annual biker breakfast during each of the past three summers. The fourth annual event will be held on Saturday, July 25, from 7 to 11 a.m. at Washington Boro
Park, 2010 River Road, Washington Boro, but it will look somewhat different than in previous years. Saddlebag Riders member John Young noted that because of precautions against the novel coronavirus, the group has opted to offer doughnuts, coffee, and bottled water instead of a full breakfast. There will be no charge for the refreshments, but donations will be accepted for the Wounded Warrior Project. Saddlebag Riders TEAM members will be available to offer bike blessings and to pray with anyone who asks. The event is open to everyone, not just motorcyclists. For safety, people should wear masks while stopping at the park. According to the order issued by Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Rachel Levine, masks covering the See Coffee Break pg 7

More Funding For Businesses Announced lancaster.com. The website is the primary resource for grant funding, personal protective equipment (PPE), public health issues, data analysis, and other information related to the $33.4 million Lancaster County Economic Recovery Plan approved by the Board of Lancaster County Commissioners in May. Phase two of the Recovery and Sustainability Fund offers $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster
County-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees. The grant portal opened for applications at 8 a.m. on July 20 and will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 24. Phase two of funding will offer two sets of criteria, one for businesses with 20 or fewer employees and one for businesses with up to 100 employees. Businesses that previously applied and did not qualify are encouraged to review the new criteria.
Grants will not be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis; individuals have five days to submit applications. Businesses are also encouraged to review the criteria for submissions on the aforementioned website prior to July 20. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be sent to the
Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. This round of funding follows phase one, which awarded a total of $10.4 million to 423 companies earlier in July. In addition to funding, businesses with 100 or fewer employees can register for a free COVID19 supply kit, gain public health information, and subscribe to a newsletter for email updates on

or 14 days after possible exposure, as it may take as long as two weeks for antibodies to develop. The COVID-19 antibody test used at Patient First tests to see if the blood has antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. Antibodies may be found in the blood when the body is responding or has responded to an infection, such as COVID-19. Antibodies may give full or partial immunity to the virus to which they develop. However, it is not known at this time how long the body will have antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 or whether they actually give immunity to future infections
Patient First now offers COVID-19 antibody testing at all its medical centers on a walk-in basis. Testing is available from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Appointments are not needed for antibody testing. The antibody test is used to determine if someone previously had COVID-19 and not to diagnose an active infection. Antibody testing is for patients who believe they may have had COVID-19 in the past, who are not currently experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, and who are at least age 5. Patient First recommends being tested at least 14 days after onset of symptoms of COVID-19
from this virus. Blood samples will be sent to a third-party reference lab for antibody testing. Results will generally be available in about two to five days. Patients may opt to receive their result via text message. Otherwise, patients will be contacted by phone about the result. For most patients, there is no out-of-pocket expense for antibody testing. For insured patients, the visit will be submitted to patients’ insurance plans. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. The lab will determine what, if anything, it bills the patient.
For those with symptoms of COVID-19 and those who wish to determine if they have an active infection, Patient First also offers drive-up COVID-19 active virus testing at designated centers by appointment. Appointments for testing are made by calling a select designated testing center. Updates about testing sites, instructions about how to make an appointment, and other information is available at www.patientfirst.com/ covid-19-testing. All Patient First Medical Centers remain open on a walk-in basis from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily for patients who have an urgent need for medical or injury care.

You have to be hard on yourself,” Lindsay remarked. “People who do it have revised and revised. It’s a long process.” • Don’t be fooled: Picture books have fewer words and pages than novels, but that doesn’t make them a breeze to complete. “The words themselves can be easier, but finding a niche and getting those words to work as a 32-page illustrated book can be harder,” Lindsay said, pointing out that the printing process constrains book size. Authors need to have a unique idea and then consider page turns, what words will be on what pages, the intended reading level, and how illustrations will fit. • Be flexible. “Publishers don’t want you to illustrate your own work unless you’re a professional illustrator. You don’t choose,” Lindsay said. “The same works with novels. I try to at least try (the suggested edits) first. Sometimes people can push you to make something better.” Lindsay recently accepted the role of youth services coordinator at Manheim Community
would like to offer writing workshops for children and teenagers so they can be creative in a supportive environment. “I would like to see programs that pair up kids with other members of the community - older adults, teenagers with tutoring - to get some intergenerational stuff going on,” she added. Clay Bandy and subsequently had two daughters. Lindsay became intimately acquainted with children’s literature by reading to her girls. As the children grew, Lindsay wrote poetry with them, and she began thinking again about publishing. With a new interest in children’s literature, Lindsay found the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and joined a critique group. She sold several poems to Highlights for Children magazine and volunteered to act as blogmaster for the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of SCBWI. She was later appointed co-regional adviser. Lindsay and her team plan two big conferences for writers every year: one in the spring at the Highlights Foundation retreat center and another in the fall in Philadelphia. Lindsay recommends that aspiring authors attend conferences like those, especially when representatives of major publishing houses participate. “It’s a really nice way to get professional feedback on your work and make personal connections that might get you somewhere,” Lindsay said. The educational opportunities afforded by conferences are also valuable, she asserted. “You meet other people in all different stages of the process. The peer connections are definitely awesome,” Lindsay reflected. “Before I joined SCBWI, I had no idea of what I was doing in publishing. They gave me all the resources to get from where I was to where I wanted to be.” For Lindsay, “getting there” meant pursuing the traditional publishing route. She wanted the support of a publisher, which independently published authors do not have. Lindsay’s publisher is helping to publicize her book, so the marketing does not rest solely on her shoulders. For authors who are seeking traditional publishing, Lindsay offered advice gleaned from personal experience and years of SCBWI membership: • Don’t send your manuscript to everybody. “Agents are looking for specific things,” Lindsay said. “Research the agents and editors who are interested in what you have.” • Get a lot of feedback and polish your book before you submit it. “You get a lot of rejections, and you have to be stubborn.
Library, and Clay is working in sales for an agricultural publication, so the Bandys have moved to Brownstown to shorten their respective commutes. Lindsay is excited about her new role. “I love working with kids, sharing books with them, and finding books they love,” she said. Currently, the library’s Summer Reading Program is entirely online, but Lindsay is anticipating in-person activities. She

The Fulton Theatre in Lancaster has suspended theatrical productions until late spring of 2021. The immediate future for large gatherings is uncertain, and the safety and welfare of the Fulton’s guests, artists, and staff, and sustainability of the Fulton Theatre is of utmost importance. This is the first time in the building’s 167-year history - through the Civil War, World War I, and World War II - that it will be closed to the community. To maintain the financial health of the organization through this difficult period, the Fulton Theatre has decreased its staff size by 70%, including personnel across all areas of the theater. The Fulton will also sustain considerable loss of revenue during this time. Employees who have been furloughed

GOTR Unveils Activity Kit Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon recently unveiled the Power Up Activity Kit to help keep hundreds of girls active and healthy through the summer while inspiring creativity, encouraging movement, and teaching new skills. Girls on the Run develops and delivers programs for girls at sites in every school district across Lancaster and Lebanon counties, and the organization has served more than 16,000 girls since it was founded in 2009. After the cancellation of schools, implementation of social distancing, and the restrictions around large public events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 11-year-old nonprofit quickly altered its spring season to continue to deliver on its mission. The at-home kit includes 50 activities to fuel a girl’s mind, body and spirit and that emphasize the connection between physical and emotional health. Each activity helps girls learn important skills such as how to cope when things get difficult, demonstrate care for themselves and others, and practice positivity. From the starters to the fun movement games and challenges, the activities were designed to get girls to laugh, create, and grow. The kit includes the Power Up activity book, a “GRL PWR” T-shirt, a physical activity training plan, a completion certificate, and more, delivered directly to the participant’s doorstep. To register, readers may visit www.gotrlancaster .org/power-up. Options for financial assistance are also offered on this website. The nonprofit organization is also raising funds to provide sponsored kits to girls within the community. To donate, readers may visit the aforementioned website and select the Donate tab.

CASA Posts “Full Plates” Program In response to both the shortterm and far-reaching implications that COVID-19 may have on families and local children, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster is introducing the Full Plates, Full Potential Program. The program is an effort to support the community, local children in foster care and the local economy. CASA of Lancaster County is partnering with local restaurants in the month of July to support local businesses and provide dinners for local resource families. Each week, the Full Plates, Full Potential Program will select an eatery in Lancaster County and encourage supporters and other members of the Lancaster community to order dinner, either curbside or dine-in, at the selected restaurant. Readers may visit www.casalanc aster.org for updates on the restaurant of the week. Individuals who are unable to dine out are asked to consider making a donation to CASA of Lancaster County to support its mission of providing a court-appointed volunteer advocate to every child who is abused and neglected in Lancaster County.
