Annual Golf Outing Will Aid Disaster Relief The annual disaster relief golf tournament sponsored by Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren will be held on Friday, Aug. 3, at Pilgrim’s Oak Golf Course, 1107 Pilgrims Pathway, Peach Bottom. The four-person scrambleformat outing will have starting times at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The cost to participate will include green fees, cart rental, snacks, prizes, and dinner prepared by church members. The tournament was started by Stanley Kreider, who had a vision to raise funds to help victims of natural disasters. With $10 in seed money from the Brethren Disaster Relief Auction Inc., Kreider partnered with Earle Hershey to host the first golf outing in 1994. Now, 24 years later, Kreider’s vision and Hershey’s leadership have resulted in the collection of more than $255,000 to assist those who have been affected by natural disasters. All proceeds from the

tournament support disaster relief locally and around the world. The Brethren Disaster Relief Auction is held annually on the fourth weekend of September at the Lebanon Expo and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon. This year, the event will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. Setup will begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20. The three-day effort raises money for victims of natural and manmade disasters. The event is supported by the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Pennsylvania districts of the Church of the Brethren, which represent more than 130 congregations. According to www.brethrendisasterreliefauction.org, the proceeds from the auction support Brethren Disaster Ministries and Children’s Disaster Services, which are programs of the Church of the Brethren. Asked to describe the challenges of staging the well-known “The Lion King Jr.” on the Cavod stage with rehearsal time of about two weeks, director Cordell Huyard launched into a series of exclamations. “This is an epic show,” proclaimed Huyard. “It’s huge.” Working with nearly 50 Cavod Musical Theatre Camp students ages 10 to 17, Huyard will strive to present a play based on what he called “one of the most popular Disney movies of all time.” “The Lion King Jr.” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29. Amy Rau will serve as musical director, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the show. Camp is directed by Meredith Bulgrien. According to Huyard, other challenges of staging the show are related to the authenticity of the movements and music. Because the costumes are inspired by the animals represented in the characters, the movements will also be inspired by those animals. Huyard noted that the costuming is in keeping with the music and movement. “The costumes are inspired by the animals, but they are still very human,” explained Huyard. “The lions wear traditional African clothing with a head piece that is a lion’s head worn as a headdress. We see their faces.” Huyard added that all the movements will be choreographed, noting that there will be a complexity to each scene, in addition to African dances, which Morales is specially trained to teach. “There’s a nod to the beautiful tribal dancing (done in Africa),” said Huyard. Likewise, Rau is also working with campers to learn words in the several dialects represented in the show, including Swahili. “The singers are doing harmonies in Swahili (throughout) the show,” she explained. In early June, when all the campers had registered, Huyard held an audition followed by a meet-and-greet and a readthrough of the script. “(The campers) have all their material and are working on memorization,” shared Huyard. Campers were expected to have their lines memorized by the first day of camp so that blocking and choreography could be learned by the end of the first week. “The second half of the second week, we will be having tech week with costumes and props,” said Huyard, who added that he has faith in the talented cast, many of whom have appeared in local theater productions. Lead roles will include Lincoln Everett as Young Simba and Gavin Haas in the role of the grown lion. Riley Fidler will play Young Nala, and Audrey Pavlica will fill the role of her older counterpart. Mufasa will be played by Ian Marcelo, and Mackenzie Neff will fill the role of Rafiki. Derrick Lambert will play Scar. Jada Corell will play the part of the meerkat Timon, and Josiah Henne will

give life to the warthog Pumbaa in a full-size puppet costume. Zazu will be played by Darla Rublesky as puppeteer. Bulgrien pointed out that the camp setting, which has drawn students from three counties, is different from other Cavod productions. “We are together 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day,” said Bulgrien, who added that when the students are not involved in rehearsal she works with them on acting exercises. “We start every day with a devotional,” she noted. “Camp is my favorite thing to do at Cavod because you really get to know the students.” Noting that the show is familiar to several generations now, Huyard said that he hopes area residents will bring their children and grandchildren to a performance. “It’s such a fun show,” he said. “Everyone loves this show.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under and free for children age 4 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-3514040. A discount price is offered for tickets purchased up to two hours prior to a performance. Pictured on front: Nearly 50 Cavod Musical Theatre Camp students ages 10 to 17 will make up the cast of “The Lion King Jr.,” which will be staged at Cavod Theatre at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29. Members of the public are invited to purchase tickets and bring their families to the shows.

Rodriguez from pg 1 Eloy Rodriguez of New Providence has been appointed middle school principal and high school associate principal at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Lancaster campus for the 2018-19 school year. Rodriguez is currently the principal at the New Danville campus. A new principal for New Danville is being sought as Rodriguez begins his new role at the Lancaster campus. The Lancaster campus serves more than 500 students in sixth through 12th grades at 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Among these students are youths from more than 30 countries, for whom Lancaster Mennonite serves as a boarding school. Rodriguez brings 15 years of experience to the role of principal. He began his teaching career as a third-grade teacher in Luray, Va. He also brings experience in projectbased learning, an interdisciplinary approach that invites students to acquire knowledge and skills through investigation, integration, and synthesis of a complex question, problem, or challenge experienced in the real word. In 2009, he joined the Lancaster Mennonite team as the fifthgrade teacher at the New Danville campus, where he became the principal in 2013. During his nine years at the New Danville campus, Rodriguez and colleagues

helped to implement the Blazer Buddy leadership program, a school learning garden, a composting and recycling program, a school-wide restorative discipline plan, studentled conferences in secondthrough fifth-grade classes, and a reading program for third- through fifth-grade students. Rodriguez has given leadership to the new MakerSpace that will open in the coming school year, giving students an opportunity each week to work through the design process as they collaborate, innovate, tinker, create, build, prototype, and practice problem solving related to real-world problems. Rodriguez also helped to organize a five-week Teaching Anti-Racism training for Lancaster Mennonite faculty and staff. Rodriguez graduated from Eastern Mennonite University with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with a prekindergarten through sixth-grade teaching certification. He earned a Master of Education with a principal certification from Millersville University. Rodriguez and his wife, Becky, are the parents of three children, two of whom are students at Lancaster Mennonite School. The family attends East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church. into designated areas, concrete barnyards, and curbs to keep nutrients in place. Additionally, larger manure storage pits allow farmers to apply manure when it can be used by their crops, instead of when the pit is full and needs to be emptied. Lancaster Farmland Trust is an active participant in water quality efforts within Lancaster County, as well as throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The trust believes this unique approach of combining land preservation with stewardship is easily replicated in other communities throughout the Chesapeake Bay region. Through the grant period, Lancaster Farmland Trust will document the practices and findings to share with other land trusts. According to www.lancasterfarmlandtrust.org, the trust works in partnership with landowners to preserve their farms and way of life for future generations - ensuring that farms will be in agricultural use forever, eliminating the threat of development, and protecting the rich, valuable soils - by placing a conservation easement on their property. A conservation easement is a legally enforceable land preservation agreement between a landowner and the trust restricting real estate development, commercial and industrial uses, and certain other activities on a property that are mutually agreed upon by the trust and the property owner. Each easement is customized to the particular needs and future plans of each individual farm family. For more information about the grant and the water quality improvement efforts, readers may call the Lancaster Farmland Trust office at 717-687-8484.

Linking these efforts is intended to ensure maximum long-term impact on water quality and allow Lancaster County to continue to be the “garden spot of the region, said the trust’s executive director, Karen Martynick. “We believe (that) a big part of the solution to Lancaster County reaching its required Chesapeake Bay reductions and improving local water quality includes protecting our farmland and finding farmers the resources to increase their conservation practices, she commented. Lancaster Farmland Trust currently has more than 40 farmers on the waiting list for preservation. To identify the strategic farms for preservation and water quality improvement, these farms will be prioritized according to impairment of the local watershed, proximity to surface water, conservation practices already in place, and opportunities for improvement. All farms currently preserved by Lancaster Farmland Trust are enrolled in the Smart Farms program, and many are already engaged in conservation practices on their own. Because Lancaster Farmland Trust annually monitors each preserved farm, the trust’s staff members are able to track the effectiveness of conservation practices and maximize the financial investment made on each farm. Laura Brenner, communications coordinator for the trust, noted that conservation efforts utilized in Lancaster County include streambank fencing to keep livestock out of streams and reduce farm runoff and erosion into streams, physical improvements to barns with spouting to channel rainwater

“Wizards” of all ages are invited to attend the first Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire on Saturday, July 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the event, the borough of Atglen will become an enchanted campus filled with magic and fun, with activities taking place along Main Street and Valley Avenue in Atglen. The Atglen Public Library (APL) has organized the event as a fundraiser for the library. Designed along the lines of popular movies and books that feature young wizards in training, the day’s events and activities are so unusual and varied that organizers hope they will interest diehard fans as well as those with a casual interest in the theme. The idea for the event came from a discussion between APL director Robbyn Kehoe and library trustee Erin Metzler. They share an interest in the Harry Potter books and movies and thought that a wizardly themed event would be a good fundraiser for the library as well as a great activity for Atglen. The hope is that this new event will bring a lively spirit to the community. “It just evolved, and people got excited about it,” Metzler said. She noted that the fair will serve two purposes. “First and foremost, it is a fundraising event for the library to help finance our relocation to the center of town. In our bigger, more welcoming location, we hope to be somewhat of a community center, offering expanded programs and resources as well as study and meeting spaces,” Metzler stated. “Equally important, however, is that the festival will be a community and family-oriented event. The

library will not be charging admission to the fair and will have several free activities for children.” Those who enter the fair will come past a dragon’s watchful presence to find all kinds of entertainment. “We have a spectacular festival entrance planned, which will beckon attendees to Di-Atglen Alley,” said Metzler. “We’ll have a stage with programs running for most of the day.” Performers will include magician Professor Snark, Irish dancers and an environmental educator with live owls. An unusual feature will be an escape room, where groups must solve puzzling obstacles in the allotted time. “I only have nine slots for groups to go through, so that one might fill up pretty quickly,” Metzler said. “People can sign up for a slot when they get there.” Those who think they know their wizards can play “Wizard Quizzo.” Visitors may also learn about magical plants from the “professor” from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Of special interest to youngsters will be the “Potion Master” doing demonstrations and helping children make slime or silly putty. Other free activities for children will include face painting and make-and-take crafts. Shopping opportunities will abound, plus there will be food vendors and a beverage area. “We have a magical market for people to buy wands and other hand-crafted items,” Metzler said. For more information and parking instructions and to obtain a map and a fair brochure, readers may visit www.atglenpubliclibrary.org. More information is also available at www.facebook.com/AtglenPublicLibrary.

always gave me an option and a hope.” Additionally, the institute supplied several referrals and chemo classes and provided pain management, transportation when needed, chaplains, social workers, a nurse navigator, and financial aid. “The place means a lot to us, and I’ll be forever grateful to them, that’s for sure,” Nathanael said. Score for a Cure will be held at the Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville. The tournament will run from 5 to approximately 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, and will resume on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 8 a.m. Spectators will be admitted free of charge, although donations will be accepted. Some concessions will be available for purchase. The Metzgers hope to have at least eight teams, which will play three times and then have semifinal and final rounds. The games will be refereed by Ron and Tim’s professional PIAA colleagues. The three-point shooting contest is slated to begin at noon on Aug. 4. Anyone age 14 or older may enter the shooting contest, and the tournament is open to men’s rec league teams. Each contestant will have one minute to take 15 shots from five positions on the threepoint shooting line. The winners from each of three divisions will face off to determine the overall winner. Costs have been set to enter the tournament and the shooting contest, with a discounted price for those who also order an event T-shirt. Folks may register by following the link posted on the Facebook event page “Score for a Cure Charity 3-Point Shooting Contest.” Registrations will also be accepted at the event. 2008. After moving back to Willow Street, he worked in auto sales. In the early part of 2017, however, he began losing weight rapidly and experienced debilitating stomach pains. Finally, on June 15, 2017, Nathanael went to the emergency room. Things moved rapidly from there. Along with the colorectal cancer diagnosis, Nathanael learned that the cancer had spread to his liver. A coloscopy bag was placed on June 19, and a month later, an abscess the size of a tennis ball was removed. Nathanael began chemotherapy in July, which continued into September. Surgery in October removed seven tumors from his liver. November saw the start of radiation therapy five days a week. Chemotherapy, radiation, and constant pain continued through January. On March 20, 2018, a rectal tumor was removed, and he began a chemotherapy regimen that will conclude in September. Currently, he is considered cancer-free, but he will receive PET and MRI scans every three months for the foreseeable future. Due to his illness, the Groffs which include Nathanael’s younger sister, Devon Rohrer, and her family - missed their annual trip to Ocean City, N.J. Nathanael is anticipating this year’s trip, which has been scheduled for after his final chemotherapy treatment. “Once I get there, (it will signify) I’m done, I’ve accomplished it,” Nathanael said. To support Nathanael, his classmate Justine Metzger and her father, Ron Metzger, have organized Score for a Cure, a charity basketball tournament and three-point shooting contest. Proceeds from the event will help to offset Nathanael’s medical bills and will benefit the Cancer Patient Support Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. “The Barshinger Center saved my life,” Nathanael remarked. “(The staff members)

Charity Ride Makes Local Stops The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America raised $1.3 million during its recent 24th Anniversary Ride. Funds raised directly benefit Victory Junction, a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. The ride’s donation will support maintenance programs, building projects and camperships. For the first time since 2011, former NASCAR driver and TV racing analyst Kyle Petty brought his annual motorcycle ride back to the East Coast. On May 5, Petty embarked on

“Cooking For Crowds” Slated

1,200-mile route, leading 225 participants from Portland, Maine, to Greensboro, N.C. Traveling through nine states in seven days, the ride included various stops and sights on its themed “Americana Tour.” Local stops included the Eden Resort in Lancaster and Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. The ride finished with a finale celebration at Victory Junction in North Carolina. Victory Junction has served as the ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by Petty and his family in 2004 in honor of his late son, Adam. Since

1995, more than 8,400 riders have logged more than 12 million cumulative motorcycle miles and raised $19.3 million for Victory Junction and other children’s charities. Funds were gathered from fans along the route as part of the ride’s “Small Change. Big Impact.” program, as well as donations made by sponsors, organizations, and the riders themselves. Team members in Manheim raised $84,437 for the ride. This year’s ride also featured several celebrity riders, including NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard

Petty; NASCAR legends Harry Gant, Hershel McGriff, and Donnie Allison; current NASCAR driver David Ragan; former NASCAR driver and TV racing analyst Ricky Craven; former NFL players Herschel Walker and George Rogers; and NASCAR personalities Krista Voda, Rutledge Wood, and Rick Allen. Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) - the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “PT was excellent! I had major back pain in my lower back and pain shooting down my left leg. Ever since I started coming here the pain is gone. I had trouble bending down to pick things up, I had trouble walking and standing…now I can do all those with no problems.” - Brooke B. Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life…I’ve seen it many times. It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… It can ruin your travel plans… And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute.

Business Expo Planned

And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. The Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists at Neff Physical Therapy have helped 100’s of people from right here in Quarryville…and the rest of Lancaster County…who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica…it’s our specialty. So by request, I’m hosting a at Neff

Telling others about why the FoodStock Music Festival raises funds to support area organizations that are working toward eliminating hunger is easy for Tom Hayden. As one of FoodStock’s three founders, Hayden said that he became passionate about fighting hunger 26 years ago, when the postal service held its first Stamp Out Hunger food drive. As a postal service worker, Hayden had the chance to pick up thousands of donations and deliver 12,000 pounds of food to the Ephrata Food Bank. “ We overwhelmed our local food bank with donations. This was in May, and I said, ‘This ought to last you through the year,’ and the guy said, ‘Actually, this won’t even last us past July,’” recalled Hayden. “That’s when it hit me how big the need was.” “This is a problem that flies under the radar. Hunger has a certain stigma to it,” said Hayden, noting that although it is a widespread issue, people oftentimes do not want to admit to struggling with it. Hardworking people often still face the choice of deciding between heat for their homes or food for their families, and Hayden believes that is something everyone can pitch in to help change. Hayden, Bobby D. Jones, and Todd Fuginetti formed FoodStock, a nonprofit organization, in 2011 as a way to combine their shared passion for music and helping others. Every summer, the organization hosts the FoodStock Music Festival as a way to raise funds for area organizations working to end hunger. This year’s event will take

place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, in the Barn and Barrel Courtyard at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The music festival will include performances by Steel Radiance, Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra, Benjamin Vo Blues Band, solo guitarist Rob Reese, and Hydroponic Philharmonic. Headlining the event at 5 p.m. will be Vinyl Groov, a Harrisburg-based band that plays everything from Motown to modern hits. “They’re an event in and of themselves,” Hayden said. “We try to keep it fresh, so we have a really eclectic mix of performers this year.” Food and beverages will be available to purchase, and a variety of arts and craft vendors from throughout central Pennsylvania will have items for attendees to browse and buy. Giveaways and silent and Chinese auctions are planned as well, with items including autographed CDs, Beatles memorabilia, a black five-piece Pearl Roadshow complete drum set, original artwork, a wedding photography package, tickets to area attractions and restaurants, and more. To purchase tickets to the FoodStock Music Festival, interested individuals may visit www.foodstockpa.org. Admission for children age 12 and under is free. Proceeds from the 2018 event will primarily benefit Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), as well as Water Street Mission and other local food banks and pantries. “We have a main beneficiary every year, but then we break it down and choose other organizations, too,” Hayden explained. It is not just what a pet puts inside its mouth that can make a difference in comfort and health, but the way pet owners take care of pets’ teeth, gums, and more. Oral hygiene, this oft-overlooked component of pet care can mean the difference between a happy, healthy pet and one that may be suffering in silence. The American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) says brushing an animal’s teeth is the single most effective means to maintain oral health between professional vet examinations. Bacteria that forms naturally in an animal’s mouth will contribute to the formation of plaque which, left untreated, can lead to periodontal disease. By brushing away the precursors to plaque, pet owners can achieve optimal dental health for their pets. Oral hygiene does not begin and end with regular brushing. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) also suggests pet lovers work with a veterinary dentist to evaluate the health of teeth, the jaws, and the roots below the gum line. These professionals are invested in all aspects of oral health care and can be called on for routine cleaning, filing, extraction, or tooth repairs, if need be. The AVMA says that periodontal disease

is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats, and by the time the animal reaches three years of age, it may have some early evidence of periodontal disease, which can only worsen if preventative measures are not taken. Pet dental problems are similar to those that occur in people. While dental caries (cavities) are less likely, abscesses, infections, broken teeth, and palate defects can occur. Signs of potential oral problems include bad breath,

abnormal chewing, disinterest in eating, swelling in the gums, tenderness when the mouth is touched, or bleeding. Pets may become irritable if their mouths are bothering them, so if behavior changes are observed, dogs or cats should be seen by a veterinarian to find out if a dental issue is at the root of the problem. Some pet owners are reticent to handle oral health care for their companion animals because they fear the

pet may bite if uncomfortable. Although this is always a possibility, dogs and cats can grow accustomed to teeth being brushed or wiped with patience, says AVDC. Oral rinses and special chews also can reduce plaque formation. Dental health is an important component of responsible pet ownership. Home oral hygiene and professional cleanings and examinations can help pets remain healthy.
