Putting The “Craft” Back In “Craft Show” By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“I think we have a good variety of things for everybody,” remarked Melissa Kreider, vendor coordinator for the annual craft show hosted by the Believers Sunday school class of Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren. For this year’s event, set for Saturday, Oct. 27, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, Kreider cut back on the number of direct sales representatives in response to shopper feedback. Instead, the event will focus on unique and handcrafted items. All 40 vendor slots are full, and Kreider is not

accepting inquiries about spaces. “Our craft show fills up over the summer,” observed Kari Johnson, Believers member and marketing coordinator for the event. This year’s craft show will feature laser-engraved and scrollworked wooden items, dog treats, fall and Christmas décor, quillows and tote bags, copper flowers, ceramics, candles, jewelry, floral arrangements and potpourri, hand-painted and chalkboard signs, stationery, metal art and rag bags, flannel scarves, felted bowls, rubber-stamping items, Haitian tinware, and a variety of baked goods, including sandtarts. The Mechanic Grove Painting Group will sell artwork. See Craft Show pg 4

Forty vendors are expected to sell a wide variety of handcrafted items at the annual craft show that will be held at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren on Oct. 27. Displaying a sample of items that might be offered at the event are (from left) Derrick Kreider holding Samantha Kreider, Kari Johnson, Acacia Kreider, and Melissa Kreider.

1 Lighthouse Drive, Kirkwood. The public is invited to attend worship services and a variety of special activities that will be a part of the conference, including a children’s program on Saturday, Oct. 20. “It’s just a time for us to get together, and anyone is invited to come out and worship with us and hang out together and have a good time,” said Media Mennonite Church pastor Jesse Johnson. Mount Vernon Christian Church, Media Mennonite Church in Oxford and Andrews Bridge Christian Fellowship in Christiana are all members of AMEC and among the founding members of the organization, which now includes 28 churches in the Northeast and some in Oklahoma. A conference of member churches is held every other year, with this year’s activities in Lancaster and Chester counties. Johnson is the current president of AMEC, and Andrews Bridge Christian Fellowship pastor Vernon Myers is one of the founders of the organization. “ What draws us together within AMEC is a focus on living biblically, and we come out of an Anabaptist faith and subscribe to those values,” Johnson said. “Our churches share doctrinal and biblical convictions, but we are quite diverse in our styles and the ways we sing and worship at our worship services.” The conference will begin on Oct. 19 with evening worship at 7 p.m., followed by a time for refreshments and fellowship. The featured speaker for the service will be James Ehrman, dean and assistant professor of leadership and culture at Evangelical Seminary, Myerstown. Oct. 20 will have a full schedule of events, starting with activities and a program for children from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The

event, designed for children of elementary school age and younger, will include a performance by local musician Bruce Fite. Worship services will be held at 8:30 a.m. with Mark Hager speaking. There will be a second worship service that evening at 7 p.m. with a testimony by Tefera Bekere and a message by Ehrman. On Oct. 20, youths and adults have an opportunity to hear the featured presentation by Piercing Word. “We’re excited that Piercing Word is going to be sharing with us,” Johnson said. “Piercing Word is an organization that memorizes Scripture, and they present it dramatically and with great effect. They do large passages of memorized Scripture with a whole team of folks who give voice to the different characters.” Following the Piercing Word performance will be an assortment of workshops and activities. “It really is a weekend where everyone is invited,” Mount Vernon Christian Church pastor Mervin Charles said. The conference will conclude with a Sunday worship service on Oct. 21 at 10:15 a.m. with Charles as worship leader and with messages by Myers as well as Dean Landry of Indian Valley Faith Fellowship in Harleysville. One of the practical ways to live out that lesson is to show kindness to others. With the proceeds from each production, Promise Players gives a sizeable donation to a nonprofit organization that is doing good in a way that is related to the respective show. This time, the beneficiary will be the Lancaster-based A Week Away Foundation, which was founded by the late Caleb Walker in order to provide people with life-threatening illnesses a feeling of normalcy and hope. One of the getaway options is to a rural area. Millette pointed out that the play is located in a cabin, and there are some mental health overtones as well.

“We think (A Week Away) is doing a great thing,” he remarked. “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 26; Saturday, Oct. 27; Thursday, Nov. 1; Friday, Nov. 2; and Saturday, Nov. 3. Matinee performances will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 27; Sunday, Oct. 28; Nov. 3; and Nov. 4. Seats may be reserved by visiting www.promiseplayers.org or calling the church at 717-4642050 on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Separate donations have been suggested for adults and for children age 12 and under. Free child care will be available for children under age 6.

“It is definitely challenging to be the director. There’s a lot more time involved - I’ve been busy recruiting sound and lighting technicians - and now I’m responsible for all aspects of the play,” Millette remarked. Millette started preparing for the production by reading through the script by Pat Cook an estimated 12 times even before auditions were scheduled. “I’m enjoying (the directorial process),” Millette said. “If you pick the right actors, it comes together on its own.” He noted that the actors were nearly ready to go off-book by the second week in October. “The actors I have are giving life to their characters. I just see it getting better and better by show time,” he added. “The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” is a comedy drama involving Uncle George Plunkett (Wayne Rhinier) and his family members. The clan patriarch has invited the family to spend a weekend in his rustic cabin, where he surprises them by reading his will. The biggest surprise, however, is that a suitcase holding $480,000 is apparently hidden somewhere on the property. The family members react with pettiness, slander, and greed before being confronted with their bad behavior, but in a way that Millette hopes audience will find humorous. “It was so much fun to watch my wife read it,” Millette related. “She was laughing until she was crying, just from reading the script. Audiences will be blessed by it.” Promise Players is a Christian theater company, and Millette noted that while this play is not overtly spiritual, it does have a spiritual lesson. “Matthew 6:1921 encapsulates the meaning of the play: It’s important to put your treasures in the eternal, (not on earth where they can be destroyed or stolen).”

Members of Colemanville United Methodist Church (UMC), 210 Colemanville Church Road, Conestoga, have been busy preparing for the Family Fall Fun Festival they will host on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 6 p.m. Individually and in groups, folks have planned a variety of games, contests, and other activities that will be offered at no charge. “It’s free, just like God’s love,” said planning committee member Linda Reburn. “We’re trying to reach out to our community,” added committee member Ellen Peifer. Costumes are welcome but not required. “We want it to be fun, not scary,” Reburn noted. There will be a straw maze, face painting, guessing games, barrel train rides, pumpkin painting, the “A Day in the Life of a Farmer” challenge, Trunk or Treat, photo opportunities, and pie-eating contests. During the farmer challenge,

contestants will be timed on how quickly they can complete basic farming tasks like collecting eggs, shelling an ear of corn, watering animals, and stacking straw bales. Competitors will be able to choose between apple and pumpkin for the pie-eating contest. “We encourage family members to compete against each other,” Reburn commented. “It should be fun.” All of the activities will conclude by 5 p.m., when a light dinner will be served and a door prize drawing will be held. Each household that attends will be entered to win a themed basket. Church members have filled containers relating to themes such as ice cream, breakfast, movie night, fishing, spaghetti dinner, Christmas, and pets, and the United Methodist Women group has contributed gift certificates to the food-related fundraisers the church will host in 2019. While there is no cost associated with participating in the festival, the organizers noted that frozen

The contemporary service begins at 8 a.m., and the traditional service starts at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school classes for people of all ages meet at 9:30 a.m. Child care is available. “We welcome any kind of person,” Reburn remarked. “We have a very outgoing, loving church here, and we’re faith-based,” Geyer said. “We’re a small church with a big heart,” added Karen Unterberger, who is married to the congregation’s pastor, Walt Unterberger. For more information about the Family Fall Fun Festival or the movie night, readers may call the church at the aforementioned number, call Reburn a t 717-305-0215, or visit www.colemanvilleumc.org.

containers of chicken corn soup will be available for purchase, and orders for mincemeat pies will be accepted. The annual mincemeat pie bake will take place on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 15 and 16, when pies and quarts of mincemeat filling will be ready for pickup at the church. Orders may be placed by calling the church at 717872-7951. The church is planning to make 2,000 pies this year, and both the filling and the dough are made from scratch. “It’s the best pie dough,” Reburn said. “It’s made with lard.” Community members are welcome to assist in the pie-making process, noted committee member Lois Geyer. Interested individuals may call the church for more information. Colemanville UMC will host a movie night on Friday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. A family-friendly film will be shown, and parents are welcome to drop their children off and go Christmas shopping, the committee members suggested. Girl’s Soccer Tops Donegal in Season Finale by Mona Steinhauer

Last week the lady booters ended the season with two games against Donegal. Tuesday they were on the road and settled for a 1-1 double overtime tie. Gracie Unger, assisted by Grace Kreider, gave the Mares an early lead. Unfortunately, the hosts matched that effort later in the first half. “We played scoreless the remainder of the game,” said head coach Ken Yoder. “Each team had equal play with good chances.” Due to rainouts, the Mares hosted Donegal on Thursday for the last game of the season. After a scoreless first half, Kayden Bedwell, on a nice cross from Alana Yoder, scored the game winner. “We had the better of the play throughout the match,” noted Yoder. “We had numerous chances to score in the first half. “It was a great season,” he added, Photo by Don Scanlin “unfortunately we fell short of our Solanco’s Rilyn Saner races Donegal’s Hayley Bauer to the ball goals of reaching the post season and

having a winning record. We did, however, have one of the better seasons ever for Solanco girls’ soccer and increased our win total from six games to seven with a final record of 7-10-1.” CROSS COUNTRY In their first, and last, dual meet of the season, the harrier teams traveled to Lititz to take on a pair of Warrior squads that were battling for the section title. Both Solanco teams fell short in the upset, 18-47. “Warwick boys are the strongest team we’ve seen in the L-L this season,” said head coach Craig Ausel. “Their ladies top five are solid as well. We caught them at a good time. They had another meet this week and took it easy on us. “This was a fast course and some responded to the opportunity of running faster through the first two miles to put themselves in position for season best times,” he added. Ben Stickler ran a smart race and continued to lead the Mules. He followed

four Warwick runners through the first 2.5 miles and then used a strong kick to pass those four runners over the last 400 meters. He was third overall and just 13 seconds out of first place with an 18:05. Avery Jacobson followed four Warwick runners to the finish line and settled for 8th place with an 18:34, his second fastest time of the season. First year runner Nathan Eller ran third for the Mules, knocking 40 seconds off his best time, running a 19:15 and narrowly missing a qualifying time for Districts. He was 13th overall. Founding out the top five was senior Aiden McBride (15th) and Colin

Althoff (18th) with sophomore Sean Keller a close 19th. “Aiden continues to improve and we hope he can qualify for districts at the league meet,” said Ausel. “Sean ran a season best 20:17 to crack into our top six. “As frustrating as our 0-10 record is, we have a great deal to be thankful for,” Ausel continued. “The underclassmen, on both teams, have learned the importance of summer training. The big challenge will be to see who remembers this lesson next June and July when the 2019 season begins.”

ADVERTISER - Solanco Edition home victory this past Friday. Joel McGuire rushed for 225 yards on 16 carries and scored four times to highlight the scoring. “It was a pretty exciting game, said head coach Tony Cox. “The kids were focused. After last year’s embarrassing loss, the kids really wanted this and the senior did a great job leading. Solanco tied the score at 7-7 with 4:13 left in the first quarter on McGuire’s 17-yard strike to Sam Buckwalter and then gained momentum when Logan Yaletchko sacked Lampeter’s Sean McTaggart, forcing the visitors to punt with 1:49 left in the frame. The Mules took off from there, scoring four unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter, three by McGuire, two at 60-yards or better. “Joel really had an outstanding game, said Cox. “He was the playmaker, but the offensive line did a great job too. Nafis Moore added two scores, one in the second quarter, and one of just two that the Mules scored after halftime. He finished with 62 yards on 9 carries. Cody Lewis and Nick Yannutz both added 67 yards rushing, adding to Solanco’s 393-yards total for the game. McGuire also completed 4-of-5 passes for another 64 yards. Michael Grech hauled in two of those. “Defensively, Seth Harnish had a big game, noted Cox. “And he’s only a sophomore. Harnish, along with Buckwalter, had seven solo tackles. He also had three assists and one sack. “We travel to Cocalico this week, stated Cox. “They’re a tough nosed team and run the same type of offense we run. It’s going to come down to fundamentals and not giving up penalties. FIELD HOCKEY The hockey team wrapped up Lancaster-Lebanon League play last week with three losses. The team traveled to Elizabethtown on Monday looking to move up in the standings against the team sitting just above them in the standings. The Bears, however, were not to be denied, pulling out a 2-1 thriller. After a scoreless first half, the hosts jumped in front just 2:44 into the second half. Solanco, despite being outshot 23-1, was determined and knotted the score on a goal by Emma Curtis, assisted by Keirra Laird at the 13:25 mark. The Bears, holding a 7-1 edge in corners, knocked in the gamewinner with 7:15 left. In their second home game of the week, Solanco took on second place Manheim Central and came away with a hard-fought 2-0 loss. “The first time we played them we lost 8-0 so this was definitely an improvement, said head coach Whitney Hawkins. “And it might have helped that we played on our grass field! “My forward line (Keirra Laird, Mariah Stoltzfus and Maggie Hirst) has really begun to excel the past couple of games and luckily they are underclassmen so that is looking great for next year, she added. The Barons (12-2), with an 8-3 advantage in corners, scored one goal in each half to secure the win. The Mares had a couple of breakaway efforts by Keirra Laird up the left side of the field and into the circle but Solanco just couldn’t finish. And in their last home game of the season, the Mares wrapped up league play with a 4-1 loss to Cocalico. The

Eagles scored in the seventh minute and added a second goal with just over one minute left to play in the first half. They kept up the pace in the second half, tallying two more goals before the determined Mares broke up the shutout with an unassisted goal by Laird in the 21st minute. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team took on league foes Ephrata and Garden Spot last week but came up empty in the wins category. Tuesday the team traveled to Ephrata where the Mounts posted a second 3-0 verdict over the Mares, winning 25-13, 25-17, 25-19. “We could not get into a rhythm against Ephrata, said head coach Meghan Cross. “Georgia played well and protected the net and Kara continues to power through with her serves. Kara McClune sparked the offense with 4 aces while Georgia Ewing put down 3 kills and Maddie Davis added 5 assists. Defensively, Ewing also recorded 3 blocks while Bri Langley dug up 14 hits. Two nights later, the Mares hosted the section undefeated Spartans and battled tough in a 3-1 loss. Solanco opened with a 25-23 first set but couldn’t keep the momentum as the stronger Spartans responded with a 25-10 win in the second set and finished on top, 25-11, 25-10. In the end, it was too much Shawna Zeiset. The Spartan hitter collected 26 kills leaving her with 200 on the season. “The girls executed on offense,

defended the net and covered on defense, stated Cross. “Their confidence and skills all came together and they played a competitive set against a very good team. Ewing recorded 2 blocks and 3 kills for the Mares while McClune chipped in the 3 aces and 15 digs and Davis put up 6 assists. Solanco also competed against Kennard-Dale on Monday and came away with their sixth 3-1 loss of the

season, (25-17, 24-26, 25-12, 25-17). McClune led the way with 8 aces, 7 kills and 6 digs. Langley and Canale, who finished with 12 assists, also collected 6 digs while Molinarez led that category with 7.

“Many of our matches have gone four and five sets, Cross noted. “That is a huge improvement and great accomplishment for this young team. Things are starting to click for the younger players and that is encouraging.

Senior Aubree Roop finished her last regular season with a 6th place finish in 22:56. Chesley Ledsma was two places back with a 23:47 with Hannah Wheeler cracking 10th (24:59). “Aubree has come a long way in four years and has provided great leadership to our small squad,â€? noted Ausel. “Chesley was working toward a district qualifying time but fell short in the last mile. She will give it another try at leagues. “Hannah, our senior co-captain, is a warrior who races despite many different physical and health related struggles in her life,â€? he continued. “She leads by example.â€? Halle Brown clocked a 25:05 and finished 12th overall with Sarah Snyder (18th, 26:32) rounding out the top five. Evelyn Billings also chipped in with a 20th place finish. “Halle continued to learn how to race and will be a giant help to our squad next year with a stronger summer of training,â€? said Ausel. “The girls finished 1-9 this year but we need to find more than eight ladies for next year’s squad. “As for the post-season, Coach Harrington and every Solanco coach after him has said‌Our responsibility is to represent our proud SLCXC tradition by competing with ‘Intensity, Courage, and Love.’ We want to walk away from the day knowing that we did everything we could do to get the most from our abilities and the work we put into this season,â€? he concluded. Aubree Roop was the top place winner for the girls, clocking a 22:57 for 6th place overall. Chesley Ledsma was two places back with a 23:47 and Hanna Wheeler finished 10th overall in 24:59. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team wrapped up the 2018 season last week with back-to-back losses early in the week and another on Friday. The team hosted Octorara on Monday. The Braves took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the 21st minute and made it 2-zip 13 minutes later which is where the score remained as the Mules denied the Braves in the second half. “It was an evenly played match,â€? said head coach Jamie Snyder. “We lost 5-0 to them the first time around so improvement is being made.â€? Tuesday night they took an early lead against visiting Donegal but couldn’t quite hold on. The Indians pulled away with a 4-2 final. Solanco jumped in front 2-1 with first half goals by Sean Salisbury and Oliver Diaz, who knocked in his first of the season, but the Indians tied the game before the half and pulled away with a pair of second half tallies. “Jake Smolik (11 saves) stopped a penalty kick in the second half and we built on that momentum,â€? said Snyder. “I thought we outplayed them but fell to some bad bounces,â€? he added. “Everyone played well but Jake’s brilliance in goal stood out. The first time we played them we lost 7-0, so again, progress is being made and the program is getting stronger.â€? The Mules hosted Penn Manor, a Section One squad with just five total wins, on Friday and dropped a 2-0 result. FOOTBALL In the much anticipated battle for the Milk Jug Trophy, Lampeter-Strasburg scored the first touchdown of the night and the last, but in between it was all Solanco as the Mules used a 27 point second quarter to regain the Milk Jug with a 48-27 senior night

Each winner received a framed print of the Rockville Bridge painting by David Lenker. Marion Mort, age 102, was named Philanthropist of the Year. The honor recognizes an individual with a proven record of exceptional generosity who, through direct financial support, demonstrates outstanding civic and charitable responsibility and whose generosity encourages others to take philanthropic roles in the community. Mort, founder of Lancaster Paper Supply Co., shares his success with organizations that are dedicated to making the world a better place. Mort has been a generous philanthropist, making significant contributions to Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, Elks National Foundation, Lions Club International Foundation, VisionCorps Foundation, and the Kay Masci Fund for Early Childhood Education, while also supporting programs for children who are visually impaired and disadvantaged. His wife, Louise, passed away in 2013. He has two children, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Peg Hambrick and Jane Kohn were named Volunteer Fundraisers of the Year. The award honors persons who demonstrate outstanding skills in coordinating and motivating groups of volunteers for fundraising projects for the benefit of charitable institutions. Hambrick, nominated by Sophie Penny, is chair of the State College Land Trust GreenBuild Project and GreenBuild Campaign. Kohn, nominated by Beth Mihmet, is chief development officer of Hospice of Central Pennsylvania and assisted with the renovation of Caroline’s Home, a hospice residence. Janice Black was named the Professional Fundraiser of the Year. The honor recognizes a fundraising executive who practices the profession in an exemplary way. Black, president and CEO of The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) since 1994, has created options for philanthropists to target their giving and make a stronger impact, building the assets of TFEC to nearly $84 million.

At the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) board of trustees Aug. 21 meeting, longterm president Dr. Peter W. Teague announced his plan to retire from the presidency on Aug. 1, 2019, upon completion of his 20th year as lead servant of LBC. He is the third longest-serving seated president of the 97 independent colleges and universities in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. During Teague’s presidency,

Lancaster Bible College tripled in size, now offering three doctoral programs; seven master’s programs, including a seminary program; and 25 undergraduate majors. The college has grown from its main Manheim Township location to five locations in four states and an initiative in Uganda, and it has expanded the main campus with 17 major building projects including a learning commons named in

Teague’s honor. LBC has also launched online education programming. Having achieved national recognition from the Association of Biblical Higher Education and The Wall Street Journal, LBC has emerged from a quiet existence to one of growing prominence. Teague and his wife, Paulette, have four children and 10 grandchildren. The board of trustees has established a presidential search committee as the college seeks its next president.

Home Water, Septic System Workshops Set Penn State Extension, in partnership with the ELANCO Source Water Collaborative, will offer two free workshops about home water systems. The events will be held on Monday, Nov. 5, in the Terre Hill Community Center, 131 W. Main St., Terre Hill. Workshops will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. They will include protecting, testing, and treating private water supplies. Septic system inspection and maintenance will also be discussed. Free drinking water testing will be provided for the first 30 households to register at each workshop. Water will be tested for coliform bacteria, E. coli, pH, total dissolved solids, and nitrates. Results from these simple educational tests can help guide attendees in future testing by accredited labs. Sample collection instructions will be provided after individuals register. Support for the workshops is provided by the Master Well Owner Network grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Pennsylvania Ground Water Association. Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences research and extension programs are funded in part by Pennsylvania counties, the Commonwealth of PA, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Individuals may register by Wednesday, Oct. 31, by visiting http://extension.psu.edu/home -water-and-septic-workshop or calling 877-345-0691. Qualified persons with disabilities are encouraged to participate. Individuals who anticipate needing any type of accommodation or who have questions about the physical access provided may contact Jennifer Fetter at 717-921-8803.
