Holiday Mall Will Support Smith PTO By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“We needed a new big fundraiser for our PTO, and this has worked,” said Smith Middle School PTO treasurer Kandi Sharp, explaining the origins of the holiday mall two years ago. The third annual event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 645 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. The PTO makes money from the event by charging registration fees for crafters, direct sales vendors, and yard sale retailers. Spaces are still available. The yard sale will be held in the school’s cafeteria, and the crafters and vendors will be located in the gymnasium. To ensure a variety of vendor offerings, direct sales companies are restricted to one
representative apiece. As of Nov. 19, the offerings at the holiday mall were slated to include customized T-shirts and other items, vinyl signs, wooden signs, crocheted dishcloths and woven baskets, quillows, tote bags, Pampered Chef products, LuLaRoe clothing, dog treats, Paparazzi jewelry, Mary Kay cosmetics, candles, ornaments, and decorative items made by Smith student Lily Gavin. The PTO will sell coffee and doughnuts for the early crowd, with hot dogs, soup, and nacho chips with cheese for lunch. Baked goods will be available all day. The Smith Singers will sell hot chocolate, and choir members will accept donations for singing carols. See PTO Holiday Mall pg 12

How Small Businesses Give Back
Christmas
&
Information from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs says that small businesses, or firms with fewer than 500 workers, accounted for 99.7% of businesses in 2016, the most recent year for data. Firms with fewer than 100 workers accounted for 98.2% of companies. Thanks to their influence and reach, small businesses have the potential to impact local communities in numerous ways. Small businesses employ local residents. According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, small businesses accounted for 61.8% of net new jobs in the United States between 1993 and 2016. Small businesses are innovative. The SBA notes that small businesses represent about 96% of employer firms in high-patenting manufacturing industries. That suggests that small businesses are full of new ideas.
Small businesses support local charities. Many local businesses give to charity, particularly local charities. Some donate money while others may offer their professional services or event spaces, each of which can be particularly helpful to local communities. Small businesses contribute to community identity. Small businesses contribute to the charm and character of a town or city. Many local businesses make up the fabric of a town, and towns are known and loved for the businesses that have endured. Small businesses help the environment. Shopping locally means consumers do not have to travel far to get their goods and services. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s research report on walkable downtown centers found small businesses encourage walking and cycling, helping to reduce air pollution from vehicles. Small businesses keep money in
communities. Local businesses keep disposable income and tax money within their communities. Business tax money remains local and can support schools, roads, and municipal services. Local small businesses help to keep cities and towns prosperous and humming along. Such establishments can help build a sense of community and forge lasting relationships. Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities. In the United States, the majority of businesses in operation are classified as small businesses, according to data from the Small Business Administration. Consumers can express their appreciation for the small businesses in their communities in various ways. Here are eight ways to support local businesses: 1. Shop at small businesses regularly. 2. Use social media to give your
recommendations on small businesses that go above and beyond in quality and service. 3. Speak with business owners about your experience as a customer, sharing insight about both good and bad experiences. 4. Encourage your family or friends to make small business shopping a larger part of their overall spending plan. 5. Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or club-based fundraisers. 6. If you own a small business, keep business cards, flyers, or a sign advertising another small business in the area to show mutual support. 7. Invite small business owners to community activity centers, nursing homes, schools, and the like to share their experiences about starting a business in the area. 8. Participate in community events that may be sponsored by small business owners.

20 vendors, up from only 12 last year. “ With the second location being only 2 miles away, it was very convenient for the shoppers to visit more vendors,” she said. Breakfast and lunch will be available at both churches. Vendors will also sell food items for people and pets, glassware, recycled/repurposed items, knitted/ crocheted/sewn goods, woodworks, candles, health and beauty supplies, handcrafted jewelry and hair pieces, note cards, painted signs, wreaths, seasonal and home décor, and more. While those involved with the bazaars hope that shoppers take home a wealth of products, there is also a desire that attendees will bring items to the bazaars as well. Donations of nonperishable foods and warm accessories such as mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves for children and adults will be accepted for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNMinistries). The accessories will be added to the holiday boxes distributed through SWEEP, a program of SNMinistries that provides supplemental nutrition to children in the Solanco School District on weekends and holidays during the school year. The nonperishable food will be used to restock the shelves at the SNMinistries food bank. “This is a great way to partner with both the church and the community,” SNMinistries executive director Teresa Dolan commented, noting that the organization is supported by local churches. “November has been extremely busy at the food bank, and we are serving four to five families a day. This, coupled with donations being slightly down, makes the timing of this event perfect.” According to Dolan, items
that would be particularly helpful include sugar, pancake mix and syrup, soup, jelly, canned fruit, saltines, mayonnaise, vegetable or canola oil, rice, and toothpaste. Readers may learn more about SNMinistries and its programs by visiting www.solanconeighbor hoodministries.org. Those with questions may contact the organization at office@snministries.org or 717-786-4308. The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms for their work performed on area construction projects during the 30th annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. The gala was held on Nov. 6 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim. The top award of the evening was the Project of the Year, which was awarded to Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. and James Craft & Son Inc. for their project Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild. The project was selected due to its community impact, client satisfaction, design features, and positive notoriety. The project was submitted by Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. in the Healthcare Over $25 Million category and by James Craft & Son Inc. in the HVAC Over $5 Million category.
SAT., NOV. 30
The project consisted of a six-story overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several challenges. Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building rose. James Craft & Son Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at its own warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas and minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority. This year, the Project of the Year Award finalists also included CCS Building Group, Willow Street - Willow Valley

Fulton Highway, Quarryville, during the 29th annual greens sale, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7 and 8. Preordered items may be customized, noted greens sale committee member Peg Wurst. Orders are being accepted for boxwood trees, wreaths in four sizes from 12 to 24 inches, candy canes, square wreaths, large and small grave blankets, and door swags. Separate prices have been set according to whether the items are decorated. Customers may specify their color preferences, choosing from gold, silver, red, blue, and lavender. Patriotic ribbons are available as well. In addition to the preorders, SLCHS members and other volunteers will make extras of each item, which will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. “If you want matching arrangements, like to decorate windows, preorder them, because we tend to make everything different,” advised SLCHS member Linda White. The candy cane arrangements were new last year and sold quickly, Wurst said. This year’s debut offering is the square wreaths, which are minimally decorated. “They’re very simple, for a more modern décor,” Linda said. White pine roping will be available to purchase by the foot or in 25-foot bundles. “We are excited to be able to offer this again after not having it for a few years,” Wurst commented. Linda and Wurst noted that the decorating committee ran out of time to finish adorning a few wreaths and boxwoods last year, so they offered them as-is. The items sold so well that undecorated items will be offered again this year. Preorders are recommended if shoppers want more than one or two undecorated items. Greens arrangements that may be used for table centerpieces will be offered but are not available for preorder. “We have a lot of baskets that we fill with greens and balls and other stuff,” Linda explained. Except for the white pine roping, the greens come from local land. “We’re cutting from people’s yards,” Linda commented. SLCHS members will harvest the greens on Saturday, Nov. 30, and then assemble them into decorative items from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
6, in the archive building’s basement. Volunteers are welcome; they should bring gloves and small pruning shears. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. “Last year we got a nice group of community volunteers, and that really helped us make (a lot),” Wurst said, listing 45 boxwood trees, 90 wreaths, and 80 grave blankets among the final tally. “The elves were busy all week. The community was wonderful helping us make things. We’d appreciate their support again this year.” Although the sale is dedicated to greenery, SLCHS 2020 calendars will be available for purchase as will books on local history written by SLCHS members Stan White and Mike Roth. The authors will be on hand both days to sign autographs. Cash and checks will be accepted for purchases at the sale. Credit cards will not be accepted. The greens sale is the historical society’s largest fundraiser. Proceeds will be used to maintain the archives of local history and the Robert Fulton Birthplace located across the road, as well as the other three buildings on the property. “Service to the community is what this is all about,” Linda said. To preorder items or for more information about the greens sale, readers may call the SLCHS at 717-548-2679 or Wurst at 717-392-5023.

Sharp said. “ We (also) give money to each team of teachers to use at their discretion.” Currently, the PTO has an annual budget of $3,000. “We would love it to be bigger because we’d like to give teachers more,” Sharp remarked. The holiday mall is a good way to bring community members into Smith, Sharp suggested. “A big part of this is reaching beyond people who have children in the school,” she said. The PTO is planning additional activities for every month through the end of the year, and community members are encouraged to make note. The Mother/Son Night of Fun will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, and the faculty members vs. students basketball game will be played on Friday, Feb. 28. A family-friendly bingo will be held in March, and a beach-themed party is slated for April. “It’s an opportunity for incoming students to mingle with current students and teachers,” Sharp said of the beach party. Additionally, the PTO wraps up each school year with a pool party for eighth-graders and a recognition night for matriculating students. For more information about the PTO or the holiday mall or to reserve a space to sell items at the event, readers may email smithpto@solanco.org.

Food Banks Receive Donated Turkeys Giant Food Stores donated 7,000 turkeys to 13 partner food banks located in communities served by the company. An annual tradition, the 2019 turkey donation took place on Nov. 5 in advance of the holiday season to help provide Thanksgiving dinner for those in need. The following food banks received turkeys: Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (Verona, Va.), Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Chester County Food Bank, Family & Community Services of Delaware County, Helping Harvest (Reading), Lancaster County Food Hub, Manna on Main Street (Lansdale), Maryland Food Bank - Western Branch (Hagerstown, Md.), Philabundance, Second Harvest Food Bank (Nazareth), State College Food Bank, United Neighborhood Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania (Scranton), and York County Food Bank. In addition to the turkey donation, Giant and Martin’s team members spent the day volunteering by organizing and restocking shelves to help partner food banks in advance of the busy holiday season. Giant and Martin’s also gave customers the opportunity to donate their free turkey certificate to a food bank.

Artist Scott Higgins, who created drawings for the “We Love Our Pets” exhibit last April at Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster, will return to the gallery for a solo show in December. “Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes,” which features charcoal animal portraits, will open on Dec. 6 with a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Higgins created the works with charcoal, each piece taking approximately 12 to 15 hours to create. The drawings look very realistic, but upon closer inspection viewers can see the artistic marks.
Higgins is a York-based artist who grew up in Lancaster and has been an artist practically his entire life. He said that he finds daily inspiration in his pets and how they make him feel. Knowing the special bond people have with the pets in their lives makes him feel honored to create a piece for a client. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. For more information, readers may visit www.mulberryartstudios.com or the art studio’s Facebook page or Instagram account.
The pug (left photo) and the lion (right photo) are just two of the charcoal animal portraits that will be featured in the exhibit “Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes.” The exhibit will open on Dec. 6 at the Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster.
