Take A (Local) Journey To Bethlehem BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
n a year with loads of canceled events, one organization is introducing something new. Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, will host Journey to Bethlehem, a walk-through live Nativity, on Sunday, Dec. 13, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. “In a year that has been obviously challenging on so many levels, and so many church ministries have been postponed or canceled all together, we didn’t want to give the appearance that the holidays were being shelved. We thought this would be a new way to offer Christmas to our church and the community,” pastor John Hartman explained. The project was organized by CLPC Life, the congregation’s fellowship committee, which includes Amy Rineer, Barbara Josephian, and Heather Musser. Josephian and Hartman collaborated on the script, which features six scenes: a visit with the prophet Isaiah, a Jewish marketplace, King Herod’s

throne room, a shepherds’ field, an innkeeper’s house, and the manger. “The goal of the Life committee is that people will experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the story so the story leaps from the pages of Scripture and into their hearts,” Hartman said. “We also want to make it fun. We’re taking some creative license.” Josephian noted that attendees will be formed into socially distanced groups that will be guided through the scenes by costumed actors who will interact with various characters at each vignette. She added that she expects it will take about 20 minutes to go through the live Nativity. Candy canes and cookies will be available after the walk-through. A brass ensemble will perform and a small choral group will sing. At least 50 people are involved in the production. Goats, sheep, and a miniature horse are slated to be included in some scenes. Rineer noted that support for the event extends beyond CLPC. Union Presbyterian Church provided

But even if the new year isn’t fabulous, at least you can mark off the days in style with a calendar from the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS). Beginning in 1987, the historical society has commissioned artists to create representations of photographs of local historic sites See 2021 Calendar pg 11

Sheetz has announced a new holiday coffee program to keep customers and employees safe this holiday season. To maintain social distancing as the pandemic continues, Sheetz will offer customers one free selfserve coffee every week during December and January. Available at all of Sheetz’s 614 store locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Ohio, the program officially launched on Black Friday, Nov. 27, and the free coffee offer will be uploaded to each MySheetz Card hold-
er’s account each Friday in the months of December and January until Friday, Jan. 22, 2021. Each coffee will be redeemable for one week after it is uploaded to the cardholder’s account. In previous years, Sheetz celebrated the holidays by offering customers a free cup of freshly brewed coffee on Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. To eliminate large crowds and gatherings at its stores, Sheetz has implemented this special holiday coffee program. All Sheetz locations are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Solanco Strong has two branches. One is geared toward family needs, and the other meets individual student needs related to education. These include the costs associated with Advanced Placement exams and the purchase of uniforms and tools for students who are dual-enrolled in career-training programs. SEF president Tom Brackbill acknowledged similarities between Solanco Strong and the Strong & Healthy Families Initiative of the Penn Manor Education Foundation (PMEF), which the latter launched in 2016. PMEF president Jan Mindish spoke at an SEF meeting, and that got the group thinking, Brackbill said. “We started discussing it in January or February, and

are able to access community resources such as food banks and housing assistance. But sometimes there are gaps, such as when a child’s prescription medication is unaffordable or back-due internet bills prevent virtual students from accessing free internet plans. Enter Solanco Strong, the new initiative of the Solanco Education Foundation (SEF), which supports Solanco School District’s most vulnerable students and their families with resources and financial assistance to help them succeed in school. “Being able to supplement (existing resources) is good and a real gift,” Hill remarked. “Just being able to meet needs that can’t be matched through community services is a blessing for families (in Solanco).”

then the pandemic struck. We realized that for the homeless families in the district, things weren’t going to get better,” Brackbill recalled. Solanco Strong became operational in August, and the SEF has been actively fundraising for it. Members started by requesting donations from Solanco employees via the payroll deduction program, and then they solicited district retirees. An apparel sale was held in November, and Hill plans to run another at a later date. Some extras may be available, and readers may email Hill at avery_hill@ solancosd.org to be placed on the waiting list. “Now we want to reach out to the community so they can donate also,” Brackbill said. Donations may be made by visiting https://solancoeducation foundation.org/ and clicking on “Donate Now.” The SEF has budgeted $12,000 for the school year. “If we need to raise more money, we’ll go out and raise it,” Brackbill said. He noted that for years, the SEF had primarily awarded senior scholarships and teacher grants for classroom projects. “(Solanco Strong) is something brand new, and there’s a real need. People are stepping up to make it happen. We’re excited about helping people, helping our students and their families.” Anyone who needs help may contact Hill or the counselors at their students’ schools and fill out a referral form. “Being able to celebrate even the tiniest successes with our families who are the most vulnerable - those little victories are huge,” Hill remarked.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank reported that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of families are facing food insecurity, many for the first time. New Organization Aims To Promote Faith And Art
ADV12306
BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
Poiema. The Greek word pronounced “poy-A-muh” appears in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus in the Christian Bible. “We are (God’s) workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,” reads the English Standard Version (ESV) of Ephesians 2:10. Poiema, which the ESV translates as “workmanship,” can also mean “masterpiece, artwork, handiwork, or craftsmanship.” “They’re metaphors that really resound with an artist,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “That verse is pivotal because … your worth isn’t from what you’ve made but what the Creator has made. But you have to do something with it.” Miller, who lives with his wife and son in Akron and is the resident teaching artist at Strasburg-Heisler Library, was influenced by his grandparents’ participation in folk art. As a youth, he was active in music performance and theater. While earning a bachelor’s degree in Bible at Lancaster Bible College (LBC),
Miller wrestled with reconciling his artistic gifts with his faith. “I’m a Christian and an artist, and I don’t know how to do both,” Miller told his adviser. The outcome of that conversation involved a year of study and the construction of a theological framework for Miller’s gifts. Over the next two decades, as Miller and his family moved to Austria, Virginia, Texas, and back to Pennsylvania, he earned master’s degrees in biblical studies and Christian education, and he developed the dream of a venue where artists could build community while deepening their faith in Christ. In October 2019, Miller met with a group of visual artists to invite them to participate in creating Poiema Visual Arts. Although the pandemic has slowed down the process somewhat, the team drafted a statement of faith focusing on orthodox, Gospelcentered beliefs, and in August, it opened applications for board members. Currently, five of the 10 positions are vacant, and applications will be accepted until they are filled.

Jeremy Miller has founded Poiema Visual Arts to inspire and encourage Christians in artistic pursuits.
The organization’s mission is to facilitate discipleship, education, and community for Christian visual artists in Pennsylvania. The initial focus is on Berks, Chester, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. The board has set goals to make connections with churches to give leaders the tools to embrace artistry within their congregations; host biennial conferences, with the first planned for 2023; acquire an unused church building to develop as a sacred space, art gallery, maker space, coffee shop, and store for art supplies and art- and faith-related books; and develop educational partnerships with colleges and universities. Currently, the organization is building a database of artists and supporters who would like to be apprised of progress, and it is seeking legal assistance for the application for 401(c)(3) status. “We’re praying our way forward,” Miller commented. To learn more about Poiema Visual Arts and to be added to the digital mailing list, individuals may visit www.poiemavisualarts.org.

To make a reservation or to donate to the lunch, readers may call Bechtold at 717397-2267 or Luzader at 717684-0128. “This lunch has been a Christmas tradition in Columbia for 33 years,” Bechtold remarked. “Our seniors need this, and our community needs this. The lunch will include turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, filling, gravy, vegetables, fruit salad and dessert. Each bagged lunch will also include a small gift as well as some additional food items. “We’ll be filling the bag with enough food to last the senior for the rest of the month,” Bechtold said. Bechtold and Luzader began working on the event in September. It is truly a community effort, Bechtold explained, noting that the Donegal High School wrestling team will help set up the night before the lunch and local firefighters and other volunteers will work in the kitchen. The meal is made possible by donations from community organizations and individuals,

Helen Bechtold (pictured) and Sis Luzader, who are known as the Columbia-Lancaster Christmas Ladies, invite seniors to a free lunch on Christmas Day.
2020
A pandemic can’t stop the Columbia-Lancaster Christmas Ladies. Helen Bechtold and Sis Luzader will offer a free Christmas lunch for seniors age 55 and older on Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The lunch will be available for pickup only at the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 10th and Manor streets, Columbia. Reservations are required for the lunch, and the reservation deadline is Thursday, Dec. 17. “We did not want to stop doing it this year, even though we had to make some changes,” Bechtold said. “We know seniors need this, and this year, they need it more than ever.” The free lunch is open to any seniors who are looking for a little fellowship on Christmas Day. “It’s not just for Columbia residents,” she stated. “It’s for any senior who is going to be alone on Christmas Day. We are not going to turn anyone away.” While the meal will not be the typical sit-down format, seniors are still welcome to come inside for a brief visit as they pick up their lunch. “They can come in, have a cup of coffee and stay for a few moments while they get their meal to go,” Bechtold explained. Masks will be required, and social distancing will be enforced.

2021 Calendar from pg 1 and scenery that have then been compiled into a yearly calendar along with tidbits of information about each image. The calendars are then sold as a fundraiser for the organization, which maintains an extensive archive and the Robert Fulton Birthplace. Susquehanna River territory features prominently in the 2021 calendar. SLCHS president Stan White explained that when he and co-author Mike Roth visited the Conestoga Area Historical Society on a mission
for a new book, they were shown crates of photographs donated by the Holtwood Hydroelectric Power Plant, which no longer wanted to care for the collection from the Pennsylvania Water & Power Company. At Roth and White’s request, the SLCHS permitted the photographs to be scanned into its database. “While I had some help, I think I have personally scanned and labeled 16,500 pictures, some of which are absolutely wonderful, but many of which will only be of interest to an
engineer,” White commented. “I now know an awful lot about the Holtwood Dam and power plants of an earlier time.” From those thousands of photographs, White selected a few to join the possibilities that artists would tackle. “I was a little surprised our calendar committee liked the Holtwood pictures as much as I did. I think they were surprised to see a steamboat and a tugboat once used to harvest river coal,” White said. The art on the cover of the 2021 calendar is Marsha Stiles’ sketch of Shudy’s Diner. “This building can still be found along Route 272 about a half-mile
south of the Buck, on the west side,” White remarked. “I wonder if the people who live in that small set of apartments know it was built as a diner.” A limited number of calendars have been printed and may be purchased at Agway, 27 E. Fourth St., Quarryville; Maplehofe Dairy, 799 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville; and Kreider’s Market, 2396 Kirkwood Pike, Kirkwood. “We can always print more if the buying public
