To Help You Rock Your Big Day

Host everything at a single location. Couples who want to

simplify their wedding day can select a site that can host the ceremony and reception and also house guests. The cost of such facilities may be more affordable than couples think, as transportation costs will be minimal and the venue may offer discounts on group packages.

Ask vendors for advice. Wedding

vendors tend to know one another and can be good sources of information. A wedding photographer, for example, may be able to tell couples which reception venues photograph particularly well, and a reception manager may know which disc jockeys or bands are best at getting guests on the dance floor.

To prevent fainting, don’t lock your knees, and do eat something before the ceremony.

Personalized Ribbon & Gifts Uniquely Made for f Your Event

Because ready-to-wear clothing is so readily available, the average person may be unfamiliar with custom-made or tailored items. In fact, a couple’s wedding may be the only instance in their lives when they require the services of a seamstress or tailor. Fittings are a part of wedding planning. Here are some strategies to help brides-to-be navigate the process of finding and being fitted for a dress: · Try on sample gowns. The first step is to make your rounds to various gown shops and try on the samples they have available. Most sample sizes will not be the size you wear every day, so expect them to be ill-fitting. Do not be discouraged. Once a gown is chosen, the dress shop will take your measurements and order the gown according to the manufacturer's sizing guide. Again, this can be shocking, since the size will likely be larger than what you wear in street clothes. Some shops will also order a little larger to allow for adequate tailoring. · Schedule the first fitting. The first fitting should be anywhere from eight to 12 weeks before the wedding date, according to experts at WeddingWire, an online wedding information provider. This is the time it takes to complete most standard alterations. Complex

customizations can take even longer. Brides should also budget a minimum of $500 for alterations, which may or may not be included in the price of the dress. · Bring shoes and undergarments. Remember to bring along the exact shoes and undergarments you will wear with your gown. A change in shoes or bra/corset can result in the alterations fitting poorly the next time. Bring these items along to all subsequent fittings. · Speak up. Voice your concerns at fittings if anything is uncomfortable or needs tweaking. Seamstresses are masters at their crafts, but only if they understand the desires of the bride. · Check the details. The second fitting is designed to check that all issues from the first fitting have been addressed, that the gown is comfortable, and that you can move freely. At the last fitting, ask the maid of honor to come along so that she understands how to bustle or help you handle complicated straps or closures. Open communication with a seamstress and bridal shop can ensure brides-to-be get a dress that fits like a glove.

Meet Kayla and Cody

bride’s hometown: Holtwood, PA groom’s hometown: Lancaster, PA current place of residence: East Earl, PA bride’s occupation: chemistry teacher groom’s occupation: elementary teacher how they met: Kayla and Cody met in high school. They had taken quite a few classes together and even sat at the same lunch table freshman year; however, it was not until senior year that they started talking to each other. “We were both taking AP Statistics together with a mutual friend, Ryan,” recalls Kayla. “I did not have a date to the prom, so it was Ryan's idea to have Cody ask me to go to prom. So Cody drove into school early one morning and in big letters on my parking space wrote, ‘Kayla, will you go to prom with me?’” the proposal: Five years later, Kayla and Cody were enjoying an annual vacation at Bethany Beach with Cody’s family. After a day on the beach, Cody and Kayla prepared to head out for a nice dinner. Cody suggested walking into town along the water. Meanwhile, Cody’s sister was positioned farther down the beach to clandestinely snap photos of the big moment when Cody dropped to one knee. “‘Are you kidding?’ was all I could say,” recalls Kayla. “I had no idea Cody wanted to propose.” As they walked back to the house, an excited Kayla tried to call her dad to report the happy news, but she could not reach him. When they arrived back at the house, she discovered that Cody had planned a surprise engagement party – complete with Kayla’s dad and her best friend, Veronica, in attendance. length of engagement: just under two years honeymoon destination: The Cook Islands

It is worth every penny to be able to hear and relive those moments.”

The Wedding Planner: What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? Kayla: The first thing we did was choose our venue. We

went on a quite a few venue tours. We knew that most venues are booked pretty far in advance, and we wanted to make sure we could choose the venue that best suited us. We were looking for a venue in which everyone could have an amazing time. We also wanted a wedding that was relaxed and that flowed. We loved Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens and decided to book there immediately after touring it! Dawn and Brian were amazing and helped us bring our vision to life!

TWP: How did you select the bride’s dress, the groom’s attire, and the outfits of the members of the wedding party? Kayla: When choosing my dress, I knew I wanted some-

thing that would reflect my style and that was comfortable! I knew I was going to want to dance the night away, so I needed a dress that would allow for that movement. As for the suits, we also wanted something practical that we knew the guys could possibly wear again. We went with long, navy gowns for the bridesmaids, but they all could choose whatever style they wanted, so that their personal style could shine as well! We wanted the day to reflect who we are and allow us all to be comfortable. TWP: How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding? Kayla: Cody’s favorite color is blue and mine is orange,

so that is why we decided on that color scheme. We both thought a barn wedding would reflect us as a couple, as we both grew up in Lancaster County. We also wanted to make sure that the wedding had a relaxed vibe to it. Both Cody and I wanted a wedding that just flowed and was relaxed, so our guests could have a great night just hanging out and celebrating. I loved the food we had! Hess’s Barbecue did a perfect dinner of some of our favorite foods. Since we wanted the wedding to reflect us and be relaxed, having pork barbecue and macaroni and cheese was perfect! Cody’s favorite aspect of the wedding was the venue and how there was so much space for both dancing inside and relaxing outside. TWP: What did you find to be the biggest challenge of planning a wedding? Kayla: The biggest challenge was deciding on a budget

and sticking to that budget. With a wedding, you can overspend pretty easily on things that you may not even need! Going through and deciding where we wanted to conserve money and where to splurge were discussions we had frequently. The guest list is also a challenge, as you want to share your day with the people you love and care about, but the list can get long (and expensive) pretty quickly as well. TWP: What is the most important piece of advice you have for other couples planning a wedding? Kayla: No one notices the little details most couples

stress over. Focus on the day and relax, because it is YOUR day. As long as the wedding reflects you as a couple, no one can judge it! Make the day YOURS, and take it all in; it goes so fast!

bride’s hometown: Ashville, PA groom’s hometown: Huntingdon, PA current place of residence: Antioch, TN bride’s occupation: catering coordinator groom’s occupation: data analysis how they met: Ashlee and Caleb met at a party during their sophomore year of college at Robert Morris University. The following semester, they had a class together. “We didn’t date then, and we spent six years being friends before I decided it was a good idea to date him,” recalls Ashlee. the proposal: Ashlee knew Caleb was planning to propose, but she did not know when. In the fall, he told her not to look in the desk in his office, because that was where he was keeping the ring. Though tempted, Ashlee managed to refrain from sneaking a peak. A few months later, the couple planned to host a party for the NFL’s championship game. The evening before the big game, they were on their way to meet some friends. “Everyone who knows me knows how much I hate the cold,” explains Ashlee, “so I obviously rushed out the door because it was snowy and cold. I got to the car and heard Caleb calling my name, but all I wanted was for him to open the car door.” When Ashlee finally turned around, she saw Caleb on one knee to pop the question. The party the next day turned out to be an engagement party that Caleb had planned. length of engagement: two years

The Wedding Planner: What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? Ashlee: I started with venue. I knew that once we had the venue picked

out, everything else would fall into place.

TWP: How did you select the bride’s dress, the groom’s attire, and the outfits of the members of the wedding party? Ashlee: For my dress, I just knew I wanted strapless, but I only tried on

10 dresses between two different shops before I found my “one.” I wanted all my girls to be comfortable in the dresses they wore, so I picked the color but let the girls pick the dresses they wanted. Caleb wanted to wear a suit instead of a tux, and we both agreed on gray for the color. His groomsmen also all wore gray suits.

theweddingplanneronline.com

TWP: How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding? Ashlee: We had a lot of personal touches. We selected our favors to repre-

sent that Caleb is a coffee drinker and I am a tea drinker. Both our fathers were officiants, which added a great personal touch to our ceremony. I bake on the side, so our guestbook was a cake plate we had made. Our candy table was a combination of candies that Caleb and I both like. For the decor, my cousin helped me figure out how to best arrange the tables. Some family members and I helped make our arbor for the ceremony.

TWP: What did you find to be the biggest challenge of planning a wedding? Ashlee: The biggest challenge was picking a venue and location. My

dream wedding was a destination wedding, but that ended up not working, so we had to decide where to have the wedding and to find a venue that Caleb and I both agreed on.

TWP: What is the most important piece of advice you have for other couples planning a wedding? Ashlee: Make sure you take time to focus on yourselves!

The Wedding Planner: What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? Kelsey: A few things … When Tim and I were dating,

we would visit Wyndridge Farms often and would joke about how beautiful a wedding there would be. It was clearly one of the first places we went to check out once we were engaged. I also went with my mom and matron and maid of honor to start looking for dresses about a week after we got engaged. We ended up finding and buying my dress that night! Shortly after getting engaged, Tim and I sat down and discussed what wedding styles we liked and what colors we wanted to use, and luckily we were both very much on the same page.

TWP: How did you select the bride’s dress and the outfits of the members of the wedding party? Kelsey: We looked at a lot of ideas online (yay

Pinterest!) to find styles and colors of outfits that we liked. I can have a hard time making decisions, and luckily my bridesmaids helped me find the dresses that they all liked and felt comfortable in, which made me happy. I wanted them to be comfortable and happy, and not just have to wear something I forced upon them.

TWP: How did you incorporate the tastes and personalities of both the bride and the groom into the wedding? Kelsey: Luckily, we’re both pretty similar and balance

each other out. We allowed each other to make independent decisions like what songs we would use for our parents’ dances that matched our personalities and relationships. We’re both big Washington Capitals fans, and they had just won the Stanley Cup a few months before, and our best man and maid of honor wore Caps jerseys for the beginning part of the reception. We are also both big fans of Converse, and having our bridal party happy and comfortable was very important to us, so our entire wedding party wore Converse Chuck Taylor shoes. Tim’s and mine were custom made in our wedding colors with “I Do” stitched on the back tabs.

TWP: What did you find to be the biggest challenge of planning a wedding? Kelsey: Managing everyone’s opinions and expecta-

tions was stressful in the beginning. We had to learn to not get stressed over the small things and focus on our relationship and remember that it was not only our day, but only one day in the beginning of a wonderful marriage. Someone gave us the advice while planning that “your wedding is one day, but your marriage is a lifetime. Invest in what is the most important.” It was such great advice that we tried to keep at the heart of our planning process.

TWP: What is the most important piece of advice you have for other couples planning a wedding? Kelsey: Don’t stress over the small things while plan-

ning! Take a moment during your reception with your partner to step back and take it all in. Watch everyone enjoying themselves – it’s so worth it!

are tricky fastenings, wedding day jitters can make handling them worse - even if you have a helper. Trying on your wedding attire will also help to reduce potential issues like a loose button popping off or a stuck zipper. Sticky zippers can be eased by rubbing the teeth with a bar of soap, the point of a sharpened pencil, a cotton swab dipped in olive oil, lip balm, or petroleum jelly.

Provide your wedding coordinator with the phone numbers of everyone involved in the wedding so if someone is missing, they can be contacted to ascertain their estimated arrival time. Identify people who can fill in if someone is delayed.

Keep in mind that bridal sizes are different than street sizes, so getting bust, waist, and hip measurements from the salon will be most helpful. If the salon’s offerings will not accommodate your entire party, you can choose a different shop. Or pick a specific color palette and allow your attendants to find their own garments. Balanced Wedding Registry

Building a wedding registry is a task unlike any other couples may encounter during their lifetimes. Wedding registries are invaluable resources that provide engaged couples' loved ones with gift suggestions. In spite of that value, couples may find it daunting and even a little uncomfortable to build their wedding registries. Building a wedding registry can require balance. Couples may not want to ask for too much or for gifts that are too expensive, but a poorly built registry can be a major inconvenience for guests. The following tips can help couples build adequate registries that benefit them without asking too much of their guests: · Register with more than one store. Registering at more than one store makes things more convenient for guests and increases the chances they will be able to shop at stores they're

familiar with. Unless your guest list is predominantly local, try to register with at least one national chain so guests who live in different regions can shop for gifts in-person if they prefer to do so. · Make a large list. Some couples are hesitant to make large wedding registries, feeling that doing so gives the impression that they're asking for too much. But large registries simply give guests more options. Many industry insiders advise registering for two to three gifts per guest. That might seem like a lot, but guests will appreciate having all of those options. · Don't hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries; however, sometimes parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. Sometimes groups of guests prefer to combine their efforts to purchase one of the more expensive items, as well. It's also important to note that many retailers discount registry items that weren't purchased, which can enable the couple to purchase items slightly cheaper after their wedding. · Vary the prices of items on the list. In addition to including more expensive items on the registry, make sure to include moderately priced and inexpensive items too. This gives guests more options and ensures that guests who might be spending a lot to travel to and from the wedding can still purchase gifts without digging too much deeper into their pockets. · Periodically update the registries. Periodically update your registries to remove items you have already received and to add items if many of the less expensive ones have already been purchased. This also makes things more convenient for guests.

Shop Local for Your Big Day As the "shop local" movement grows in popularity, weddings present a prime opportunity to embrace this trend. Local vendors have intimate knowledge of the areas they serve, and that can make for a more personalized wedding. Local vendors are often a go-to choice

when couples are planning their wedding ceremonies and receptions. Once couples choose a town or city to host their weddings, whether that is their own hometown or a far-away locale, they can begin exploring the benefits of working with locally based vendors.

Familiarity Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly the venue where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with nonlocal vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have pre-existing relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding-day operations go smoothly.

Proximity Local vendors can meet with brides and grooms more readily throughout the planning process, making things less stressful for the happy couple. This also makes it easier to drop off deposits, attend meetings, make fitting appointments, or attend styling sessions.

Couples that travel for their weddings and employ local vendors will not have to pack as much. Using local vendors eliminates the need to bring decorative items, flowers, and much more. Plus, couples needn't pay to transport and house vendors brought along from back home.

Environment Individuals who are conscious of protecting the environment and conserving resources by reducing their energy consumption often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other nearby businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on area farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

Customization Working with local vendors often translates into getting more personalized service and attention than mass retailers or merchants can provide.

Taking steps to control the costs of pre-wedding festivities can help cost-conscious couples and their friends to have fun without emptying their wallets. Some fun and affordable ideas to celebrate the upcoming nuptials include: Bar or winery crawl: Partygoers typically want to enjoy a night out on the town, and traveling from one establishment to another can be a fun way to do that. Provide participants with matching hats, T-shirts, or another signature item and make the rounds. If driving between establishments is necessary, be sure to appoint a designated driver in advance or arrange for transportation. Attend a group event: Gather together for a sporting event, a concert, a theater show, or a night at a comedy club. Investigate discounted tickets for large groups. Belt out the tunes: Open mic or karaoke nights at restaurants, bars, and other establishments around town may make for a fun way for friends to share a few laughs together. Participants need not be professional singers to join in on the festivities. Camp out: Get in touch with nature by enjoying a camping trip, complete with a campfire and a few brews. Putting A Ring On It

When selecting engagement rings and wedding bands, couples can employ the following tips to shop with confidence:

· Cut costs with style. A ring with a classic solitaire of one carat weight can cost thousands of dollars, but a band covered in just under one carat of tiny pavé diamonds can offer plenty of sparkle for a lot less money.

silver but is long-lasting. Couples should weigh the cost versus benefit of splurging on a more expensive metal, or they can speak with a jeweler about a suitable substitute.

· Investigate personal style.

· Know your settings. How the diamond is framed can affect how big it looks and even how much it sparkles. Gems framed with a bezel can give the illusion of a larger stone.

their girlfriends wear, so the engagement rings complement their style. Some women love modern jewelry, while others gravitate toward vintage pieces.

· Come in under carat. Buying just shy of the next carat weight can save between 20 and 30 percent, according to The Knot. Plus, the size discrepancy probably will not be visible to the naked eye. · Think about trading up.

Some couples like to replace engagement rings with a more elaborate ring for a big anniversary. Some jewelers will accept the purchase of the engagement ring toward the price of a future ring. · Ask for help. Jewelry stores are in the business of developing relationships with their customers. When purchasing engagement and wedding rings, couples can discuss their desires in regard to a ring, as well as their budgets, with their jewelers.

· Get the desired cut. A skilled jeweler knows how to properly cut a stone to bring out its best radiance. From round to princess to emerald to marquise cut, cut styles can affect how the stone looks as well as the price. · Know ring metals.

Bridal shows can provide inspiration to couples planning their weddings. Recently engaged couples may be excited to get a jump on wedding planning. Bridal shows can be a great way for couples to meet and familiarize themselves with local wedding professionals, all the while introducing themselves to the terminology of wedding planning. Though they're a great source of information, contacts, and samples, bridal shows also can be a bit overwhelming. Learning how to maximize time spent at shows can help couples plan their weddings as efficiently as possible. · Scout out vendors. Check the bridal show's website for lists of exhibitors, and see if your desired vendors are on the list. Even if they're not, keep an open mind and use the show as a chance to compare offerings. If an event map is available, marking off must-visit booths can help save time. · Preregister. Preregistering for bridal events saves time at check-in, and doing so may make you eligible for discounted tickets. · Come prepared. Chances are each vendor is going to ask couples for information so that they can follow up with a phone call or email with more detailed offerings and estimates. Couples attending the show can expedite the process by coming equipped with labels that feature their names, contact information, and wedding date. They can then stick the labels on sign-in sheets or use them like business cards. · Dress comfortably. Bridal expos involve a lot of walking and roaming around. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Consider a backpack or hands-free bag so you are not weighed down when collecting the swag and other handouts throughout the day. · Ask questions. When face-to-face with vendors, rely on their expertise, but don't hesitate to ask questions concerning themes, colors, recommendations for honeymoon locations, invitation paper suggestions, and much more. · Stay for the fashion show. Many shows will offer a runway experience to present the latest gown and tuxedo offerings. This can be an entertaining way for couples to formulate their wedding styles.
