Spring spruce-up keeps downtown Lititz fresh and attractive
BY JEFF FALK
Cleaning is a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it.
It’s a task that can be made a little more enjoyable by a collective spirit of cooperation and camaraderie. It also helps if cleaning crew members are like-minded and share common interests.
For a group of volunteers in downtown Lititz, cleaning up is a labor of love.
Downtown Lititz business advocate Venture Lititz will conduct its annual spring cleanup on Saturday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at the Lititz Borough office, 7 S. Broad St., and then proceed to tidy up and spruce up the five blocks of the historic downtown on Broad Street and East Main Street.
To sign up to volunteer, go to www.lititzpa.com/event/spring -clean-up or call 717-626-6332. There is no deadline to sign up, and individuals can even show up on the day of the event and help clean up.
“It’s a really fun morning,” said Emily Allen, who’s the executive director of Venture Lititz. “There’s a lot of laughter. It’s not hard labor. You’re being a part of the community, and it gives you a sense of pride. There’s a sense of ownership. We’re not just here; we’re part of it.”

“We’re trying to brighten up the downtown and get ready for spring and all the events that happen in Lititz in the warmer months,” continued Allen. “This is not a fundraiser.
This is just giving back. It’s a great coming together of all different people in the community.”
in groups.
“It’s not overwhelmingly dirty,” said Allen. “But this year, we had a lot of snow, so debris got pushed into corners. You don’t really notice the dirt, but if you look close, it’s there.”
“We want to do anything we can to make Lititz beautiful.”
Armed with shovels, brooms, rakes, leaf blowers and wheelbarrows, volunteers sweep, pick up trash, weed and mulch around trees in the downtown business district.
The volunteers work in pairs or
Between 60 and 80 volunteers are expected to participate in Venture Lititz’s spring cleanup. Typically, the volunteers are families, members of sports teams and church groups, borough council members, members of civic organizations and concerned citizens.
“It’s a range of people,” said Allen. “It’s a nice day for people to meet. Everyone works together for a day. It’s a great turnout, but we could always use more volunteers. The more people we have, the more we can get done.”
Currently, there are nearly 60 merchants doing business in downtown Lititz.
“(The downtown shopping district) is our face,” said Allen. “It’s what people see when they drive through town. We want people to come back. You wouldn’t notice something if it was really clean, but you’d notice it if it was really dirty.”

Music possesses the power to change lives, redirect moods and feed souls. But each genre of music is different composition-wise, rhythmically and lyrically.
Rock ’n’ roll is not classical, country and western or rhythm and blues music. Neither is rock ’n’ roll jazz or folk or even pop music.
Rock ’n’ roll is rock ’n’ roll.
“Rock ’n’ roll music is truly a legacy of our modern-day culture,” said Debbie KlineSmith, who’s the director of the Lititz Area Community Choir, Warwick Alumni & Friends. “Music always reflects what’s going on during the particular time it is written. At the beginning, people looked at rock ’n’ roll as being bad. This beat was infectious. Music has brought people together through time. It also generates all kinds of feelings and emotions.”
The Lititz Area Community Choir, Warwick Alumni & Friends will explore rock ’n’ roll’s influence and impact during its spring concert, “Forever Rock, An American Music Legacy,” on Sunday, April 27, at 7 p.m. at Warwick

to make Lititz beautiful,” Allen added. “It’s great for the merchants. It makes Lititz welcoming. Our goal is to be a draw. We want to keep the downtown pretty, and people turning out to help clean up makes that happen.”
Venture Lititz’s spring cleanup event was established 12 years ago.
In promoting the local business district and making the historic downtown a destination for both locals and outof-town visitors, Venture Lititz hosts four other events throughout the year: Taste of Lititz, set for Friday, June 6, this year; Apocalititz 5K, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 25; its annual gala near the end of the calendar year; and Fire & Ice in February.

“It’s great to see the community come together,” said Allen. “My favorite part of the spring cleanup is seeing people working

Handbell ensemble to perform at church

It was started to provide an auditioned community ensemble made up of persons able to play advanced literature and interested in advancing the art of handbell

Ringers representing seven southcentral Pennsylvania counties perform on seven and a half octaves of Malmark handbells, along with Petit & Fritsen handbells, Silver Melody Bells, handchimes, and other instruments. In 2015, the ensemble performed at the White House.
The ensemble will offer its CDs for purchase at the concert.

“Rhythmically, rock ’n’ roll is very challenging to perform,” said KlineSmith. “It sounds easy when you’re listening to it, but it’s not. The continuity and the way it’s written rhythmically, that’s what we’ve been working on. It’s a challenge to take music off the page and make it what it’s supposed to be.”
“Forever Rock, An American Music Legacy” will be a compilation of 10 songs, medleys and mashups of songs derived from music spanning eight decades from the 1950s to now. The performance will feature the voices of three soloists - Jamie Standish-Jensen, Kyle Metzger and Ethan Reimel - and include music from artists like Queen and Simon & Garfunkel.
The concert will last 75 minutes, and it will not include an intermission.
“The music moves chronologically, from the ’50s through the ’80s,” said Kline-Smith. “Then we have some soloists, songs from the ladies’ group and songs from the men’s group. The more current numbers are at the end of the concert. Every decade kind of has its own moment.”
“We’ll have a Dick Clark-like character speaking to the audience on the big screen,” she added. “It’ll enhance what’s going on with the music.”
“(The music will) make your toes tap,” she continued. “I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s music everyone is familiar with. It’s one song after another that the audience has heard before. They were top hits of those decades.”
Since January, the Lititz Area Community Choir has been rehearsing for more than an hour each week at Brunnerville United Methodist Church in preparation for the performance.

wick High School graduates.
“It’s not the typical music a concert choir might do,” said Kline-Smith. “Because our choir is made up of so many different generations, I thought, ‘Why not do music from all those different decades?’ Our lives are filled with this music every day. It’s music we grew up with. The music we’re highlighting has brought so much enjoyment to so many people over the years. This kind of music is timeless.”
After retiring from her position as a longtime music educator at Warwick High School in 2022, Kline-Smith responded to a call for a local community singing ensemble and formed the Lititz Area Community Choir in the fall of 2022. The April 27 performance will represent the sixth concert that the group has presented.
“I know the community knows that I know how to put on a program,” said Kline-Smith. “When we started the choir, I knew we’d have some followers. In general, Lititz is a very music-loving community. I thought people would come. The word is out: If you want to have a good night out, come to one of our concerts. It’s been a great success for both the singers and the audience.”
“I’d love for people to come to this performance and hear history come to life,” continued Kline-Smith. “They’ll be hearing songs that are part of our past. They’ll have certain memories when they hear them. They can listen to music that takes them through different stages of their lives.”
