A tiered wedding cake is often a fitting conclusion to a wedding reception. In recent years, wedding cakes have become more of an artistic centerpiece, rather than just a confectionary treat. Some couples seek out renowned wedding cake bakers for a cake that will amaze the crowd, complete the theme of their wedding, and offer a unique representation of their persona as a couple. If television trends are any indication, many people are opting to spend several hundred to thousands of dollars on a customized wedding cake. Indeed, the average couple will spend between $600 to $800 for their wedding cake. Although some catering halls or reception sites will include the cake in a package deal, many couples choose to order their cake from a specialty bakery. “When a bride is asking questions early on…and wants to know, ‘What should I expect to pay for my wedding cake?,’ a very accurate answer is, you should expect to pay for your wedding cake about the same price (per person as) you would pay for a dessert at a fine dining restaurant,” said Naomi Byers of Byers Butterflake Bakery in Leola. “Through the years, this (has been) very accurate. Today, a good dessert is between $5 to $7 per dessert,” she said, adding, “This gives you a great idea when planning how many people you’re serving.” When deciding on the type of cake, it’s no longer necessary to stick with a simple white cake with buttercream frosting. Think about

exploring other flavor and filling combinations that will tempt the guests’ taste buds. For those who can’t settle on just one flavor, how about having a different flavor for each layer? Couples getting married in the fall may want to think about a spice cake that evokes the feelings of sipping a mug of spiced cider. Cream cheese frosting is often a pairing with spice cake, or think about a layer of caramel that will make it taste like you’re enjoying a candied Halloween apple. A hummingbird cake may fit the bill for a spring wedding. This is made with mashed bananas, pineapples and chopped pecans. This cake is perfect when paired with cream cheese frosting. Yellow or white cake are universal favorites for weddings. Some pizzazz can be added through the use of creative fillings. Consider something citrusy and summery for a summer wedding. Raspberry preserves or lemon curd are tart and sweet. For a tropical flair, mangoes or passion fruit can be mixed with touches of coconut. A winter wedding can be accented with rich flavors, like a decadent chocolate cake filled with chocolate ganache and black cherries in a black forest style. Those toasting to the good life may want an almond cake enhanced with some fine liqueur and simple chocolate buttercream. Pastry companies also may be able to develop a cake that encompasses a couple’s
Cakes favorite flavors or symbolizes a special moment in their lives. A Boston Cream Pieinspired cake may liven up the wedding of a couple who became engaged in Boston. Maybe a cannoli cream-filled cake will usher in memories of a trip to Italy. Kids at heart can enjoy candy confection cakes filled with gooey chocolate, nuts and marshmallows.
Couples should sit down with their baker and sample a number of flavor combinations to determine a recipe that works for them.
Don’t forget about decorative elements. Wedding cakes today can be covered in icing flowers of any hue, patterned to look like lace or draped fabric, or even painted with pictures or scenes. Often, the type of icing chosen, such as buttercream, royal or gum paste, will determine what elements the baker can employ. It all depends on the consistency and durability of the type of icing.
Are More Than Just Dessert
According to Linda Cwynar of Linda’s Cakery in Mount Joy, buttercream typically limits the decorator to various flowers and leaves, applied with an icing decorating bag. Hard royal icing, which is made of meringue, sugar and water, is also applied with an icing bag and can be used to create flowers and other decorations or patterns. Gum paste, however, is the most versatile type of icing and allows decorators the opportunity to be extra creative. “Gum paste is a mixture of gum and fondant to make it pliable, so we can handshape (elements) into realistic flowers or anything else we can come up with,” said Cwynar. “By using gum paste, it gives us the ability to shape things, and it will hold its shape and be totally edible.” Just remember, cakes, elaborate in nature or otherwise, typically need to be ordered several months in advance. Keep in mind that some bakeries may offer discounts if payment is submitted ahead of schedule. “(We offer) a 10 percent discount when your tier cake is paid in full at least 2 weeks prior to your delivery/pickup date,” said Sharon R. Redcay, executive vice president of Achenbach’s Pastry in Leola. Whatever the type of cake you finally decide on, choose a presentation and flavor combination that fits both your ceremony and your preferences. You may even consider displaying the cake as a centerpiece on a table with seating cards, so that your guests can enjoy the culinary masterpiece all evening.

THE DRESS
Wedding For most brides-to-be, the choice of a dress is among the first and most important decisions they make when planning a wedding. With thousands of choices available in every price range, finding the perfect weadding dress can be a difficult and time-consuming process. However, brides can make their search much easier by following a few guidelines.
Set Some Parameters
Start by knowing your limits and making some important decisions before setting foot in a store. To avoid disappointment down the line, determine the maximum amount that you can spend on a dress -- and don’t forget to include all the little extras, such as undergarments, shoes, jewelry, a veil, and/or hair ornaments. Next, take an inventory of your personal style. If you know that you’re not comfortable in strapless or sleeveless dresses, for example, immediately eliminate these options. The trick is to rule out a few style options before hitting the magazines or stores and then be open to all other options.
Get Started Early
Planner
Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for the dress-buying process. “Start your planning early, making sure to start your search for your wedding gown at least six to nine months prior to your big day,” recommend Mary Ann Hoober and Alissa Hoober-Smay, co-owners of The Bridal Emporium in Elizabethtown. “This allows for your gown to be ordered and allows six to eight weeks for alterations to be done, so they will be completed a few weeks prior to your wedding day,” they explain.
When visiting a bridal salon to try on gowns, brides should follow a few guidelines that can make the process go more smoothly and potentially reduce the amount of time it takes to find the perfect gown. Wear a supportive, well-constructed strapless bra or corset in your correct size. If you will be wearing a petticoat, also have the right size available. Go without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean. Try to wear your hair similar to the style you have in mind for your wedding. Brides should also note that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger than your day-to-day clothes. Proper measurements can be matched to designers’ size charts.
To Thine Own Self Be True
There will be no shortage of opinions -from mothers, sisters, friends, and store personnel -- about your choice of a wedding dress, but the decision, ultimately, is the bride’s alone. A great strategy is to be open to suggestions about dresses to try on, but to reserve the right to choose the look that feels right to you. It may also be best to limit the number of people who go shopping with you to one or two trusted friends or family members, as an entourage can be confusing. “When you are going to a bridal store to try on gowns, bring those who will be a good support to you,” Hoober and HooberSmay suggest. “Remember, you value the opinions of your family and closest friends, but ultimately you must choose the gown you love, the gown that makes you feel beautiful, and the gown that reflects who you are.” With so many potential options, you might want to consider bringing along a camera and taking photos of yourself in the dresses that could be contenders.
Find The Dress That Fits You
(And Your Wedding) Remember that your goal is to find a dress that flatters your body and expresses your personal style -- not to fit into a particular size. If you look ghostly in white, feel free to choose a creamier

Try It On

Dress 101 shade or a dress that has decorative accents of a different color near your neck, shoulders, and face. Similarly, there’s no rule that a wedding dress has to be floor-length. If you’re planning a daytime or more casual wedding, you might want to consider a tea-length dress (one that falls a few inches above the ankle) or go even shorter, if the look is flattering on you. How well a gown fits goes a long way toward the bride’s appearance. Brides should work with their bridal store to have necessary alterations done on the gown or hire a seamstress to tailor a vintage dress or one purchased from a vendor that does not offer inhouse alternations. “When looking for a wedding gown, don’t limit your search to gowns in only your size,” advises Gail Mendenhall, owner of Country Threads By Gail in Manheim. “In most instances, gowns can be altered down or up sizes,” she explains, adding, “Don’t rule out a gown you love because it’s not quite your size.” If you have the option, however, of ordering a dress in various sizes, Hoober and Hoober-Smay recommend ordering the size that fits you now, even if you plan to lose some weight before the wedding. “It is much easier to take your gown to a smaller size if you reach your goal,” they explain, than it is to take it out or make it bigger. Following the same principle, it is better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations if you are between sizes.
Don’t Sacrifice Comfort
Consider Something Borrowed
grooms take charge of the tuxedo shopping and fittings of their groomsmen, including making sure the tuxedoes are all paid forand picked up in time and remembering to return rentals. “This will give your bride-to-be peace of mind and confidence in you,” Klink adds.
Preservationists use two cleaning methods: the wet cleaning method, which entails washing the dress by hand with a mild cleanser to remove stains, and the dry cleaning method, where stains are pre-treated and the dress is then put in a dry cleaning machine. Once the dress is cleaned, it is wrapped in white, acid-free tissue paper or unbleached muslin. The wrapped dress is placed in an acidfree or paperboard box, which should be stored out of direct light to keep the dress from becoming yellow. Having your gown cleaned and packaged by a reputable preservationist generally costs between $200 and $400. Before sending your dress off to be done, ask if the work is done on site and find out if you have to sign a disclaimer. Seek out a preservationist who will guarantee her work. If hiring a professional doesn’t fit into your budget so soon after the wedding, prolong the life of your gown in the meantime by carefully wrapping the dress in unbleached muslin or a white sheet and storing it in a sturdy box under your bed until you can take it to a preservationist.

Style and fit may be the two most important factors in choosing a wedding dress, but comfort should be a close third. Ask yourself if you will be comfortable in a particular dress, given the setting in which your wedding will take place. For instance, if you’ve always dreamed of an outdoor wedding, you may want forego a dress with a long, trailing train that could trip you up on your walk down the aisle. Even if you’re planning an indoor event, having a dress and shoes that are as comfortable as they are beautiful will greatly increase your odds of enjoying your special day GROOM’S TIP: Jan Klink, owner of to the fullest. The Bridal Boutique in Manheim, suggests that
Ask your bridal shop or wedding consultant in advance for the name of a gown preservationist. While many dry cleaners claim to clean wedding gowns, most may not be experts in preservation.
The Wedding
Some brides-to-be are lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to wear the wedding dress of a family member or friend. While some may view a hand-me-down gown with a degree of skepticism due to fears of its style being seen as out-of-date, it is important to remember that heirloom dresses can be altered and turned into something that fits the new bride’s style and physique. Recycling a dress is an especially agreeable option for those looking to cut costs or to incorporate family history into their big day. There are, however, several important factors to take into account when considering a vintage or hand-me-down gown. Try on the gown and see if the necessary alterations are possible. Remember, it’s much easier to take fabric away from a gown than to match it and add fabric to the gown. Do not plan on crash dieting to fit in the gown, as you may end up stuck with an ill-fitting dress. Decide if the shape of the dress is flattering on you. If a gown has good “bones” to it, there’s a chance that a talented tailor can turn it into something that will enhance your body type, while a gown in a style that you never would have considered may be much more difficult and costly to transform. Check the condition of the dress. A gown that has been professionally preserved is more likely to look as good as new. Also, remember your budget, because while hand-me-down wedding dresses may be free initially, costs may accumulate depending on the extent of the alterations needed. Get an estimate from a seamstress to determine if it will be financially smart to go with the used gown. Additionally, a bride may want to pass up a passed-down dress if she’s selecting it purely for economic reasons and not because she really loves it. In this case, it might be a better idea to scout for bargainpriced options, rather than wearing a dress you’re not thrilled with.

Looking Your Best: Hair & Makeup Tips
A bride has boundless options when selecting her hairstyle and makeup for her big day. The best hairstyle and makeup will enhance each bride’s individual beauty – playing up her favorite features and reflecting her personality. To achieve a hair and makeup look that will look great on the big day in person and in wedding photographs, planning ahead is key.
Call In The Professionals Experienced hair stylists and makeup artists can transform your look from basic to glam in a short amount of time, and women often rely on the professional expertise of cosmetologists to help them create the perfect wedding look. Find a stylist with whom you will have a good rapport. Ask your regular salon stylist if she does special occasion work or ask for a referral from a friend or family member who has used someone in the past. Find a stylist that you'll stick with through your wedding day.
Plan Ahead It’s a good idea to meet with a hair stylist and makeup professional a few weeks before your wedding day. Study bridal magazines for inspiration and consult with a hairstylist about what will work best with your hair type. “Consult with your salon for a trial bridal updo before your wedding day so your special day can be stress-free,” advises Deb Cohen of Shear Perfection in Mount Joy. “The consultation appointment before the actual hair styling for the wedding is extremely important,” agrees Heather Devlin of Devlin Hair Studio in Leola. “It will allow the bride to work out the details on how to plan a hair style and wedding headpiece that will work well together. Planning ahead will help to eliminate extra stress on your special day,” she explains.
Bring your veil and/or headpiece and a photo of your dress to the appointment if possible, so the beauty professionals can see the big picture. Talk to your stylist about suggested cuts and colors that may enhance your hairdo. With the help of your stylist, set a schedule for certain hair tasks that should occur at specific times. For example, your final color should be done at least two weeks before the wedding to allow for color blending. The hair rehearsal will not only help your stylist get master her technique, but it will also enable both of you to fine tune what works and what doesn't. This step will help to eliminate any wedding day hair and makeup surprises. Take pictures from all angles to ensure that you're happy with the look from every direction.
Tremendous Tresses
Planner
Your hairstyle should complement your face and dress and look elegant with or without a veil or hat. Those who don't want to wear a veil may choose to use barrettes, combs, or a tiara as accents. If you normally wear your hair long and straight, consider long, flowing curls adorned with a headpiece of flowers and pearls. A smooth, shiny updo of straight hair works well with a slinky satin gown, while a dress with layers of tulle may be better accented with soft curls. A short column dress looks terrific with a textured or sleek bob.
The Wedding
If you have a round face, sleeker styles with longer veils will be more flattering. Fuller hairstyles and veils compliment narrow faces. If you are wearing a long veil, a hairstyle with less volume on top is
18
TheWeddingPlannerOnline.com
more appropriate. The French twist is a classic wedding style that works beautifully with long and short veils and can hold up for hours. Hair extensions, falls and hairpieces can help you achieve a glamorous style if your hair is too short for an updo. You can also embrace your short hair, using side parts and some height at the crown to ramp up your style. Clips, curls, and headbands are additional ways to dress up the look. If you can't decide between an updo or flowing hairstyle, consider pulling part of your hair back with the rest left flowing down your back. If your hair is very long or you want to add hairpieces, braids can also be very romantic when adorned with flowers or beads and crystals. You may also want to choose a style that can be worn up for the wedding and down at the reception. In addition to the style of your dress and the shape of your face, factors to consider when picking a hairstyle include the height of the groom and the time and place of the wedding. Elaborate headpieces and sparkly crystals are a better choice for an evening ceremony, while flowers, wreaths, headbands, and hats are perfect for daytime and more casual settings. An elaborate updo may not be practical if you'll be on the beach with blowing wind.
Pick Your Products Give yourself plenty of time to experiment with any new skin care products or makeup a few weeks before your wedding. You don't want to risk a rash or other allergic reaction that could spoil your big day. Similarly, brides are warned against taking drastic measures with your hair within two to three weeks of the event. Don’t schedule a cut or color too close to the event.
For your hair, it is advisable to use mousse or hair spray to help set the hairstyle. Brides should avoid the use of hair serums or frizzfighting oils that can cause hair pins or curls not to hold well. In most cases, a stylist will come equipped with the items she needs. If you have discussed any special hair accoutrements, such as rhinestones, beads, or clips, get them ready. Don’t forget other important details, such as selecting a perfume for your big day. Lorraine L. Brady, owner of Perfume House by Lorraine in Lititz, says, “Perfume completes an outfit. Building a fragrance wardrobe reveals how multi-dimensional we are. It is based on mood, style, season, weather, and events.” Like hair and makeup professionals, perfume experts can be consulted before the wedding. Brady says she strives to “offer the customer the opportunity to reward themselves with uncommon, unique, and individual” and to provide “the perfect place to choose your perfect scent for your perfect day.”
Don’t Overdo It Use your wedding day hairstyle and makeup to highlight your best features. Choose a hairstyle and makeup that work with your face and veil – avoid copying a look you’ve seen on a celebrity that does not flatter you. Don’t stray too far from your usual look, as a complete makeover may end up looking totally unnatural. Choosing flattering light and neutral makeup colors will give your face a healthy-looking glow. Eye shadow shades of cream, peach, and pink will complement a white or ivory
Waterproof foundation and mascara and other long-lasting products will help your makeup last through all of the tears, eating, dancing, and kissing. As your wedding and reception will last several hours, it's also a good idea to keep a touchup kit handy that includes powder, blush, and lipstick. A translucent powder will keep you looking fresh and reduce shine in photos.

It can take about an hour to do a hairstyle, and if the stylist is working with more than one person for the party, it is important to be on time for your appointment or be home if the stylist is coming to you.

Hair should be completely dry so the stylist does not have to spend extra time blowdrying. If you have very curly hair and need it smooth and prepped for your stylist on your appointment date, try going to a hair salon the day before to have it professionally blown out. You’ve decided when and where the wedding ceremony will be, and where you’re going to hold the reception. Now, you have to figure out how you’re going to get there. And, guys, since the bride-to-be has been planning every other little detail of the big day, from the flowers to what her bridesmaids will wear, this is something that you can do. Luckily, these days, there are a lot of options for arriving in style. The traditional, time-tested way to go is, of course, renting a limousine, or car. The Bridal Association of America reports that the average couple spends $400 to $500 for an automotive rental. However, prices may vary depending on the geographic area and the type of vehicle rented. When going the limo route, there are several things to keep in mind. One is to book as soon as possible, especially during the peak wedding season. “It will be one less thing (the couple) will have to worry about,” says Linda Steffy of Landis Enterprises in Ephrata.
Riding in Style
“Depending on the type of limousine, we recommend booking eight to 12 months in advance,” says Douglas Rydbom of Premiere #1 Limousine Service in Middletown.
Some Traditional & Not So Traditional Options for Making an Entrance
Vehicle options at Premiere include sedans, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), vans, party buses, motor coaches and stretch limousines. Landis also rents town cars, SUVS and passenger vans in addition to limos.
Planner
Before making that call, decide how many limos are needed, and the size. Because the bride and groom often do not see each other before the ceremony, two limos may be rented, one larger for the bridal party and one smaller for the bride and her parents. “We have six-, eight- and 10-passenger limousines,” says Steffy. “We do offer a 10-percent discount for three or more limousines.”
The Wedding
22
In choosing a limousine service, Rydbom recommends “checking apples-to-apples between services. Each limousine company will generally have their own pricing policies. Pay attention to ‘add-ons’ like fuel surcharges, travel time to your location or other service fees not included in the base price. Be sure you get the full price up front when weighing your options.”
When deciding on the time length for renting a limo, don’t skimp on time. “Weddings do not normally go off with military precision,” says Rydbom. “Rent the TheWeddingPlannerOnline.com
limousine for at least an extra hour beyond the expected schedule.” Both Premiere and Landis rent limousines by the hour, with a three-hour minimum. Premiere offers eight-, 12- and 16-hour packages, and doesn’t charge extra for additional stops, mileage or fuel. Premiere leaves the driver gratuity up to the customer, but recommends between 10 and 20 percent. Landis adds a 15-percent gratuity to the total bill. “That way on her wedding day, the bride will have nothing to worry about,” says Steffy. Once the bridal party is en route, limousine services usually offer some nice amenities. “We also provide water, champagne glasses and ice in the limousines,” says Steffy. “We have ‘Just Married’
signs for the back of the vehicles. We also offer a ‘red carpet’ to make the bride’s day even better!” All of Premiere’s stretch limousines are appointed with glassware, bottled water and ice service. Premiere can create custom signs that the couple can keep after the wedding. All decorations supplied by the customer must be approved. Both companies also offer transportation for bachelor and bachelorette parties, thus providing a designated driver. At Premiere, bachelor/bachelorette packages range from wine tours, paintball and nights on the town. Both also provide shuttle transportation for wedding guests as well as h o n e y m o o n transportation to and from airports and other venues.
You’re getting married! Congratulations!

or even a Hummer.
Besides the traditional limousine or a classy car, there are other memorable ways to get to one’s wedding. How about a classic car, or a sports car? Also impressive would be a stretch SUV, like the Cadillac Escalade, Ford Expedition
“The uniqueness is it’s a horse-drawn carriage ride,” said Rabold. “(We provide) carriage drivers with many years of experience, (as well as) a Just Married sign.” For an additional charge, couples can decorate the carriage in flowers to match the color scheme of their wedding. Speaking of horses, they can haul more than just a carriage. A bride and groom atop a handsome steed can make for a memorable mode of transportation and equally memorable photos. Or, if you want to rev things up a bit, ride off into the sunset on a motorcycle. Those who love the water and have planned their wedding near the sea or a lake may want to consider getting there by boat, be it a large vessel or a canoe or rowboat.

Or, if you want that true fairy tale feel, try a horse-drawn carriage. This is probably best suited for warmer weather, unless you’re willing to snuggle up in the winter. RuthAnn Rabold of Rabold’s Carriage Rides of Newmanstown offers services to couples in Lebanon, Lancaster, Dauphin, Berks, Montgomery, Chester and the surrounding counties. I did two things right after we got engaged in October 2011. First, John and I looked for our venue. We knew that we wanted to get married during the summer of 2012, but we were pretty open to any month during that summer. We were surprised at how full most places were for the summer already, so we decided we would find a place we loved, in our price range, and then let that dictate our actual wedding date. When we went to Landis Valley Museum, after checking out many other places, we instantly knew this was where we wanted to get married. We got engaged on the beach under the stars, and the barn had twinkling lights that reminded us of that special time. They only had one date left for the summer, so that was how we decided our wedding day! The other thing I did was start looking for my dress. I was so excited to be getting married to John that I wanted to start looking right away, especially since I knew it took a while for some dresses to come in. I actually found a dress my first time going to look. It fit my style perfectly and was so beautiful. I knew I wanted to walk down the aisle to John in that dress.
How did you choose a style for your wedding? Did you find a dress to match the style, or did you plan the style around your dress? What unique touches did you add to your wedding? We didn’t really have a set style for the wedding. I think we used the venue and combined our style with that of the reception and ceremony location. Our reception was in the barn at Landis Valley, so we chose decorations and special touches that went with that classic style. Our style was very eclectic, and we wanted our wedding to show our personalities. We combined the classic and beachy themes. Our centerpieces were made by us. We used mason jars with sand and shells and pink and white flowers. We also had lots of bright colors and made it fun. We had disposable cameras on the tables, and we gave each table a name that represented John and I and things we did together as a couple. We also made our own playlist for the wedding. We saved money by not having a DJ and just renting speakers and having a friend be the master of ceremonies. I think playing our own music made our wedding unique. We also wrote our own vows. We didn’t want our wedding to be this huge fancy occasion that took over our lives and seemed stuffy. We wanted it to be this fun day where we celebrated our love and this new start to our life together, and I think we accomplished this, and our vows to each other were a really special part that we will always remember.

There were a couple factors we looked at when it came to the photographer. We initially found Lu Ann through a recommendation of a friend. She had done their engagement pictures, which were gorgeous. Then John and I went to meet with her and see some of her other work. When we went to her house, we instantly felt like she would be a great addition to our wedding. We wanted a low-key atmosphere and didn’t really want to have a lot of stuffy formal shots. She told us that her style was casual, which was exactly what we wanted. Another big factor was price. We had a budget for our wedding that we didn’t want to go over. Lu Ann was priced so reasonably, along with the fact that she takes amazing pictures! I was so impressed during the day of the wedding how she captured such great shots for us to keep forever.

How did you incorporate your groom’s tastes and personality into the wedding? John was involved almost every step of the way. We went together to pick out the wedding venue. He also chose the colors for our wedding. We knew that we wanted it to be bright and fun, and we worked together to figure it out. He helped with all the other major decisions like catering and music. We really wanted this to be a celebration of us, so I made sure that he was making a lot of the decisions with me.
If there was one thing you could do differently, what would it be? There honestly isn’t anything that I would do differently. Our wedding was everything I imagined my wedding would be. I got to marry my best friend and celebrate with all my family and friends.

Make sure to first set a budget. There is so much that goes into planning a wedding, and there are a lot of vendors/venues/services that are very expensive. Decide what you want to spend, and stick to it. Your wedding is just a day; it’s the marriage that comes after that is so important. Also, find your venue right after setting a budget. The place is what decides your day and all the other details. A lot of places fill up fast, so make sure to find the place that fits your personalities before all the days disappear. Also, be open to getting married on a Friday or Sunday. That cuts down on the cost but doesn’t change the atmosphere and fun. We got married on a Friday and wouldn’t have it any different. Lastly, have fun with planning. Your engagement is a time to have fun getting ready for your wedding and marriage. Don’t spend it stressed out. Enjoy deciding on every detail and decision, but if something isn’t perfect, it’s not the end of the world. You’ll be a beautiful bride walking down the aisle to your handsome groom! What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there? The first thing we did was discuss a budget with our families and amongst ourselves; discussed potential dates, the overall feel; and began our search for reception venues. We booked the reception venue first! Not having much of an idea of where to begin, we found our inspiration for a timeline in bridal magazines… well, the bride did.
Out of the many skilled photographers in the area, how did you choose one? Choosing a photographer was a very difficult process. After searching through many photographers’ images, we chose Jenna Stamm (and her 2nd shooter, Justin) on recommendation and for her edgy, stylish photojournalistic approach. When it came to a photographer, we had specific ideas in mind, and Jenna fulfilled all of our expectations.
How did you choose a style for your wedding? Did you find a dress to match the style, or did you plan the style around your dress? What unique touches did you add to your wedding? The style and feel was very important to us. We love the rustic/vintage vibe for everyday life, and the idea of having a wintry rustic wedding seemed perfect for us. The dress was an accent to our style -- the lace details, satin finish and floral pick-ups seemed very elegant and rustic, the overall “volume” of the dress felt fit for a winter wedding. It was also important to have our wedding day represent our personality as a couple. I became nearly obsessed with Etsy and Pintrest, and a lot of the personalized details came from ideas or handmade items from those sites. Our centerpieces were filled with hydrangea, pimm’s cups, candles and tall birch branches. The table numbers were numbered engagement photos. The escort card table was decorated with mason jars, candles and a rustic storage box filled with flowers and Christmas ornaments. Mostly, we took a lot of time together to personalize the wedding with our dinner and dancing music choices!

How did you incorporate your groom’s tastes and personality into the wedding? We were on the same page with overall feel from day one. Rob had a certain “feel” in mind when it came to a venue, so if he voiced a strong opinion, it was always taken into consideration. We had a surprise Phillies baseball cap groom’s cake at the rehearsal dinner that represented something he loves. In addition, music and food were of utmost importance to the groom. While we consulted on many, many laborious details, we tried to make the major decisions together…the rest were carefully discussed amongst the bride and bridesmaids. Looking back, the day really reflected both of us -- which we felt was quite an accomplishment!

Asking for help! It is impossible to plan all the details of a wedding day on your own, and you need all the assistance you can get. I would have delegated more tasks to others and been more proactive in getting all the personalized details we wanted finished earlier. I would also allot more time for photographs on the wedding day; we have many beautiful pictures, but looking back, the day became hectic quickly, and it would have been nice to have more time set aside for pictures. TheWeddingPlannerOnline.com
Any tips for other brides- and grooms-to be? Booking a videographer is one of the best decisions we made. We debated if we needed one or not; the day goes by so quickly, and it has become one of our favorite keepsakes. It’s easy to get caught up with the planning and decision making and forget to take a step back to think about what the upcoming day really represents. The lifetime together afterwards is the best part, and that is what your wedding day is all about!

What was the first thing you did when you began to plan your wedding? What inspired you to start there? The first thing I did to begin planning my wedding was to ask my best friend if she would be my maid of honor, followed by asking the rest of my bridesmaids if they would take part in our special day. I started there because I knew I would need their help in order to successfully plan my wedding and to make it as stress-free as possible.
How did you choose a style for your wedding? Did you find a dress to match the style, or did you plan the style around your dress? What unique touches did you add to your wedding? I chose a style/theme for our wedding based on my husband’s love of mason jars and living in the country. From there, we went with a country chic wedding where we incorporated lace, burlap, wildflowers, and lots of mason jars.
Out of the many skilled photographers in the area, how did you choose one?
How did you incorporate your groom’s tastes and personality into the wedding?
Our wedding was planned very quickly [because of our upcoming move to South Korea due to my soon-to-be husband’s service in the U.S. Army], so we picked a photographer based on who we could find available in such a short amount of time. We were very pleased with Amanda Renfrew Photography and would definitely recommend them.
My husband’s style and personality were incorporated in to the wedding by using the mason jars, like I mentioned, and also with what he and his groomsmen chose to wear. They wore white button-up shirts with brown vests and ties and dark jeans and brown boots.
If there was one thing you could do differently, what would it be? I honestly don’t think there is anything I would change about the wedding since it turned out just how I wanted it to. I think if I were a little more organized with everything, I could have prevented some stress.

Stay organized and accept help from your wedding party, family, friends, etc. A piece of valuable advice that I received is to remember that your wedding day is a celebration, not a performance, and at the end of the day you are going to be married to the one you love, which is the most important thing.

Going Green On Your Big Day:
How To Have An
Eco-Friendly Invitations:
Couples about to tie the knot can make their weddings even more special by making the festivities eco-friendly.
Environmentally friendly ideals are now permeating all aspects of daily living, and couples who already do their best to reduce, reuse, and recycle may want to employ those same values on their wedding day. The growing interest in eco-conscious weddings not only benefits the planet, but also allows couples to set their weddings apart, as ecofriendly aspects can help create unique memories.
The Wedding
Planner
Eco-conscious couples can go green in a number of ways before, during, and after their wedding. The carbon footprint of a wedding can be reduced simply by scaling back and avoiding overconsumption. However, there are also easy ways to include green practices in a wedding without compromising on style or statement. Couples won’t have to jeopardize their ideals or tastes to achieve a wedding that is both green and beautiful.
38
TheWeddingPlannerOnline.com
One of the easiest ways for a bride and groom to go green while planning their wedding involves the wedding invitations, as couples have many options for eco-friendly invitations. Though many etiquette experts frown on abandoning paper invitations for digital ones, many couples are doing just that. Those who still prefer paper can go green by having their invitations printed on recycled paper or tree-free paper. Couples can also reduce their other wedding stationary needs by skipping the extra inserts inside of the invitation, such as directions and registry cards. Instead, couples can direct guests to a personal wedding Web page. Many wedding websites offer couples the chance to create their own personal Web page with information about themselves and the wedding ceremony and reception. Couples can post directions, hotel information, and other details that would otherwise be disseminated with the paper invitations. Collecting all of this information on a Web page reduces paper consumption and makes it easier for a couple’s guests to find all the pertinent details regarding the big day.
Wedding Wedding Attire and Jewelry:
Another way to reduce a wedding’s carbon footprint is to reuse and recycle wedding attire and jewelry. A couple’s journey to their wedding day typically begins with the marriage proposal and an engagement ring, and even this time-honored tradition can be done in an eco-friendly way. Couples can go green by purchasing vintage or antique engagement rings and wedding bands. Couples can also shop from jewelers that use recycled stones and metals. For a more personal approach, family heirloom jewelry can be used. Eco-conscious brides can also embrace history when selecting their wedding attire if the bride’s mother, grandmother, or other relative has offered her wedding gown. Reusing a wedding dress that has been re-fitted will save the bride money, in addition to conserving the energy that would be needed to construct an entirely new gown. Furthermore, the sentimental gesture of wearing a gown passed down through the generations will be appreciated by the bride’s family members and is one way for her to include them in her wedding. Brides can also reuse veils, jewelry, shoes,
and other accessories. Brides who do not have heirloom dresses and accessories to incorporate into their wedding attire can still take an eco-friendly walk down the aisle. In vintage stores, brides can find many styles of dresses and accessories. Additionally, a number of websites match up brides with others looking to swap gently-used items at low or no cost. Brides can also purchase a new gown that is made from sustainable materials. Many top designers now make gowns produced from such materials, leaving brides with a variety of green options.
Beauty:
Brides can also incorporate environmentally friendly products into their wedding day beauty regiment by asking their hairdressers and makeup artists to use all-natural beauty products instead of conventional cosmetics, which may contain toxic chemicals. Brides can also patronize an eco-friendly salon, which are growing in popularity.
Venue:
The Wedding
Eco-friendly wedding options can also extend to the ceremony and reception venues. One of the most affordable and environmentally friendly ways to get married is to simply elope or have a small ceremony. After all, there’s no rule that says couples have to invite 300 of their not-so-close friends to the wedding. Opting for more intimate affairs allows couples to save on cost and to help the environment. For those who do want a larger wedding, keep the event close to home. Couples can wed in a family member’s large backyard or in a nearby park to avoid using large, indoor reception halls. Moving the ceremony and party outside can alleviate some environmental impact related to energy usage. Couples may also look into catering halls that offer packages that include other elements of the wedding, such as flowers, cake, linens, music, and more. These convenient packages may be more affordable

and will save the couple the time and gas they would have used driving around to visit different vendors. Instead of rice, which can be damaging to wildlife, guests may be supplied with bubbles, birdseed, sprinkles, biodegradable confetti, or flower petals to throw at the happy couple after the ceremony.
Flowers:
Donate, Recycle and Reuse for a Greener Wedding Couples often go above and beyond at their weddings, which can result in items going to waste. Couples with a little creativity, however, can find ways to recycle, reuse or donate items featured on their big day.
_ Food:
Food is often prepared in abundance, particularly when the meal is served buffet-style, which can result in plenty of leftovers. Some caterers have already contracted with food recovery groups to take leftover food and give it to those in need. If not, couples can do an online search to find out how they can donate leftovers to local organizations.
_ Clothing: Items can be donated to
consignment stores or thrift shops, where they can be purchased by someone who may not be able to afford an off-the-rack item. Clothing can also be donated to an organization that provides clothing to underprivileged people. Some schools and organizations accept donations to provide low-cost formalwear to students attending the prom or other formal events.

terpieces that that are left at the end of the reception can be donated to a hospital, hospice center, or nursing home or dropped off at the homes of elderly or ill friends or relatives.
_ Favors:
Provided favors have not been engraved with a date or names, couples may be able to return extras to the store. Couples may give these items another couple who is planning a wedding and looking to cut costs. Favors can also be sent to anyone who gives a gift or a card but did not attend the wedding.
TheWeddingPlannerOnline.com
Flowers add significant aesthetic appeal to a wedding, and couples can make them even more appealing by choosing local flowers that are in season. Local and seasonal flowers do not need to be transported as far as their exotic and out-of-season counterparts. When shopping for a florist, eco-conscious couples should look for one who specializes in organic flowers, which are never sprayed with potentially harmful pesticides or fungicides. In addition to organic and seasonal flowers, green options include bouquets made of sustainable succulent plants and centerpieces full of organic fruits and wildflowers.
Reception:
Suggestions abound for couples interested in hosting a green reception. Hosting a wedding at or near home gives couples the opportunity to shop around for locally produced, organic foods. Couples may also wish to consider skipping the all-you-can-eat buffet and serving a more traditional meal to reduce the amount of wasted food. Instead of formal escort cards indicating firm seating arrangements, couples can save paper by allowing guests to choose their own seats from mix-matched options, such as long, communal benches and comfy sofas. To save money on decorations, couples may decorate with items they already own. Centerpieces and other displays can incorporate the couple’s favorite books, photographs, souvenirs, collectibles, and other special items, adding a personal touch to the event’s décor. Brides and grooms can also make or purchase banners, garlands, signs, and other decorations that are made from old maps, handkerchiefs, books, and other recycled items. Another way to make the reception more eco-friendly is to choose a charitable party favor. Instead of giving a party favor that will end up collecting dust on a shelf or sitting in a landfill,
Couples don’t have to jeopardize their ideals or tastes to achieve a wedding that is both green and beautiful.
couples can give guests organic products or make a donation to a charitable organization in the guests’ names.
Transportation:
A major way to reduce the carbon footprint of a wedding is to reduce the transportation-related energy consumption. Carbon emissions can be reduced and fuel can be saved by reducing guests’ need to travel far for a wedding and by employing transportation options that can accommodate several people at once, such as a limousine for the wedding party or a party bus to transport guests.
Gifts:
Couples can opt for open registries that enable guests to give everything from eco-friendly housewares to charitable donations or cash for down payments on a home. When giving money, guests do not risk giving the bride and groom something that may be returned or discarded.
Honeymoon:
A couple’s dedication to being environmentally friendly can even extend to the selection of a honeymoon destination. Couples can choose from a number of eco-conscious hotels and resorts or elect to honeymoon close to home.

Etsy and Pinterest Help Brides Get Creative
Today's brides have resources available to them that their grandmothers - and perhaps even their mothers - never imagined. The primary repository of those resources is the Internet. A search of "wedding planning" turns up about 1.73 million results in a quarter-second; wading through all of those links can be overwhelming.
Here's where we recommend you start...
-" A picture is worth a thousand words." Rather than bookmarking the pages you like, join a social media/digital scrapbook site like Pinterest or Juxtapost, where you can save any images you like. Click on those images, and your browser will whisk you to the images' locations, where you can access the information behind them. You can save images from sites that you visit, or you can access thousands of images (and their accompanying sites) that have already been "pinned" or "posted" by o ther users.
- "Off the beaten path."
The Wedding
Planner
Weddings are no longer the cookiecutter affairs of yesteryear. Instead, today's nuptials are opportunities for the bridal couples' unique characteristics to shine. There are plenty of websites for women who want to follow the rules, but for those who want to push the envelope - or destroy it completely – www.offbeatbride.com is the place to start. The site contains photos, advice, DIY instructions, shopping recommendations, and breakdowns of user-submitted wedding ideas. There is also a forum, where brides are invited to join the "Tribe" to support each other in planning nontraditional weddings, as well as to share tips, tricks, and more related to tying the offbeat knot.

- "Customize."
So you've identified the look you want for your wedding, but you're having a difficult time finding "the" items you need from vendors of mass-produced products. Enter Etsy, an e-commerce site that connects buyers with sellers of handmade or vintage items, as well as art and craft supplies. Etsy is on Pinterest, but the best way to use Etsy is to go to its home page, www.etsy. com. There, you can browse the wedding options, view trends, and even read the stories of couples who incorporated Etsy-sourced or DIY items in their weddings. Browsing by color, theme, recently listed, and by other users' favorite items is also possible. While on the site, don't forget to start a bridal registry. If you're having a unique wedding, why not feather your nest with unique products, too? If you can't find what you want on Etsy, check out smaller sites like www.bonanza.com (everything but the ordinary), www.zazzle.com (vintage gifts), www.DaWanda. com (Germany-based marketplace for unique and designer products), www.zibbet.com (offers handmade goods, fine art, vintage items, and crafting supplies), and www.shophandmade.com (dedicated to handmade items).

Tasty Tops Trendy:
Use Cuisine to Create a Wedding Everyone Remembers Was the Food Good? That’s likely what guests at a wedding reception will
remember when looking back on a couple’s big day. That and whether they had fun.
But fear not. Good food and good fun can be enjoyed by all. To avoid a forks-down review of the wedding feast, couples may want to take extra culinary care when selecting the wedding day fare. So, during all that planning and poring over every minute detail, don’t fuss so much over whether to choose Jordan almonds over chocolate truffles or whether the cake should have an extra tier. Rather, put the effort into selecting dishes that taste as good as they look. When it comes to food, trendy doesn’t trump tasty. Whether you are cooking yourself, having a family member serve as chef or relying on the menu of the reception hall, think about foods that will please guests and select those items, regardless of them being fancy.
Here are some other tips: You want foods to be filling, but you don’t want your guests to have to waddle to the dance floor. If you're planning on several courses, keep portion sizes small to offer a taste of the different items offered. Classic foods can work well as wedding fare. Roasts, barbecued meats and favorite pasta dishes can make guests feel like they're dining at someone's home and not at a wedding. Choose items people have heard of. Instead of tornadoes of beef, select a hearty prime rib. Just because a dish sounds fancy doesn't make it taste better. If a guest doesn't know what he or she is eating, it can be uncomfortable. Now is not the time to experiment with exotic foods, either. Otherwise, some picky eaters may be left hungry. Think about the foods you love and see if they can be incorporated at the wedding. Although a breakfast bar at an evening event may seem funny, waffles and omelets may appeal to a greater number of guests than a gourmet fish creation. Don't make vegetarians an afterthought. Too often, vegetarians must eat whatever the kitchen can pull together, which is usually a compilation of the vegetable garnishes from the meat dishes. Make an effort to have a true vegetarian dish that is intricate and delicious.
Tasty Trends ..................................... You can’t go wrong with mashed potatoes. Drop dollops of creamy spuds into cocktail glasses and let the guests top them with bacon bits, cheese or chives. Serving any type of food in a hors d'oeuvre style can make it acceptable at a formal affair, whether that food is pizza or caviartopped crackers. If you have a favorite restaurant that serves delicious food, find out if they will cater your wedding. Just because it isn't on the menu doesn't mean it cannot be prepared. Talk to the catering manager and let him or her know your preferences. Provided you're willing to pay a little more, there's a good chance you can have items that aren't on the standard catering menu. Think outside the box for your cocktail hour "bars." A bread bar, a dipping station, milk and cookies service, or vegetable bar are options that go against the standard cheese and pasta stations. Although it's your wedding, you want your guests to be happy - and well-fed. By choosing foods they will love and rave about, you’ll no doubt get lots of great reviews.

From Ms. To Mrs.
Changing Your Last Name
After a bride says "I do" to a life with her new husband, she often says "I do" to a new last name. Changing your surname will require certain steps to ensure the legality of a change in identity. Because a name change will require a copy of the marriage certificate -- something that often isn’t obtained until after the ceremony -- it's best to wait until after you've returned from a honeymoon to change documentation. Also, in order to travel, you may require birth certificates, passports, a license, or another form of ID. It will be impossible to change all of those forms of identification before the wedding. Inconsistent documentation could cause hang-ups in the travel process. Additionally, you may be charged if you try to change your name on airline tickets after they've already been issued.
Ready to get started? Here are most of the documents you'll need to change as you take on your new married name. 1. Social Security Card: If you are a U.S. resident, you will need to go to your local Social Security Office or download a form from the IRS website to apply for a change of name on your Social Security Card. It takes approximately 10 days after the application is received for the IRS to update the records.
2. Driver’s license: In order to change your driver’s license and vehicle registration, you'll likely have to visit the Department of Motor Vehicles. You will need several forms of identification: your marriage certificate proving your change of name, your Social Security Card, and your old driver’s license. You will also want to be sure to change your car title documentation and your registration card.
Planner
Remember to update your information as well with the following services and individuals. The general rule of thumb is to update anything that would typically be altered by a change of address. - Records at medical offices, such as various physicians, a dentist, a counselor or a veterinary clinic - Professional licensing boards or unions - Investment accounts not set up through your employer - The Post Office - The voter registration board - An alumni association -Memberships with clubs or organizations
may or may not be charged for the new issue, depending upon how long it's been since you applied for a passport.
- Magazine subscriptions
5. Bank accounts: Guests will likely issue gift checks in your married name or as a couple. It helps to have an account available in which to deposit those checks. You can choose to merge your banking accounts once married or open up a joint account with your new name.
The Wedding

3. Passport: Contact the Passport Agency to update your name on your passport. You
4. Insurance policies: If you have health insurance, life insurance, or a 401(k) plan, you should communicate your change of name to the respective companies.
58
Some Additional Places To Change Your Name
6. Employer: Have your employer change your name in their records and update payroll and any other services. You will also want to update email signatures to reflect your new name and have your IT director change your information for computer logins and email addresses. A courtesy email to clients will fill them in on your name change. Be sure to alert the appropriate person if you require new business cards or a new name plate. 7. Credit card & utility companies: Notify these companies of a change of name. Some may require written documentation to complete the change. 8. Wills and other legal contracts: Have legal documents, including property deeds, amended to feature your updated name. You may want to change your beneficiary to your husband on applicable items. TheWeddingPlannerOnline.com
-Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn, etc. In most cases you can draw up a standard letter that includes all relevant information, including your maiden or previous name, your address, your new name, a copy of your marriage certificate, and possibly your social security number. You can then simply swap out the necessary business or contact address and update the related account details. One final tip: Make sure parents and members of your wedding party know ahead of the ceremony that you are changing your name. This way, they can inform any guests that may wish to purchase a monogrammed gift.

Wedding Registries:
The Do’s, the Don’ts, the Alternatives Thanks in large part to the Internet, it's now easier than ever before to set up a wedding registry. Couples can do so entirely via the Web or visit their favorite store or stores and use a hand-held scanner to add items to their registry. There are also a number of ways to support local retailers with your registry. But even though registries are easy to set up, it might help couples to consider a few tips before they start clicking or scanning away.
•Register with multiple merchants. •Register with stores that are easily accessed by your guests, or use an alternative registry to request general items rather than specific products. •Read the fine print. Some online retailers are kinder than others. When establishing an online registry, examine the retailer's policy thoroughly to be sure it does not include substantial service charges or exorbitant shipping fees. •Include items at a variety of price points to accommodate guests with varied budgets. Register for luxury items because people enjoy giving those gifts, but also include practical items. •Go with necessities, as well as fun items. Games, loungewear, electronics, stationery, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and gift cards are items that can be requested on a registry. •Set up a honeymoon registry. If you do not need some of the more common household items like cookware, linens or home furnishings, a honeymoon registry allows guests to donate money toward your honeymoon. •Let the groom-to-be add items specifically for him to help him feel more included. •Set up your registry early so it will be ready in time for any celebrations in your honor. •Write thank-you cards! Don’t let your guests’ generosity go unacknowledged.
DO'S
•Don’t register for items you don’t want. Duh! •Don't assume all guests are tech-savvy. It's safe to assume your guest list will include some people who have never before shopped online. Because of that, you should s t i l l register with a brick-and-mortar store instead of only registering online. •Don’t include registry details in your edding invitation. If you have a wedding website, include the link and provide details online. Otherwise, let close friends and family know so they can help spread the word, or include the registry note in a shower invitation. •Don’t ask for money outright.

ALTERNATIVES Wedding registries take the headache out of gift-giving, but not every bride wants – or needs – a cut-glass punch bowl with matching glassware. With that in mind, here are some alternative registries, designed so that the happy couple can start their lives together with as few worries as possible.
mThe beauty of this registry is that couples are not tied to any particular store, and they may indicate their desire for handcrafted or gently used items. This registry provides flexibility and promotes ecofriendly gift-giving. Couples may also suggest donations to their favorite charities.
-www.myregistry.com mThis registry allows couples to sync their pre-existing store registries, as well as to register for any product no matter the store, whether it’s online or at a physical location. Android and iPhone apps enable users toscan barcodes of items they see in real-life and add them to the registry. The registry can also be shared on Facebook.
mCouples can register for cash toward honeymoon expenses or other things like down payments for a house. Guests have the option of sending money through the mail or at the wedding/shower free of charge, or they may make credit card payments to the couple’s PayPal account for a small fee.
mWanderable is a honeymoon registry for couples who want experiences, not traditional gifts. Linked withFacebook, the site allows individuals to plan honeymoons based on information and pictures shared by other users or found elsewhere online. The basic registry is free, but upgrades are available for a cost.

A marriage license becomes valid on the third day following application or the next business day if the third day falls on a weekend or holiday. The license is valid for 60 days from the third day following the date of application. The wedding ceremony need not be performed in the county in which the license was issued. However, an out-of-state marriage license cannot be used in Pennsylvania, nor can a Pennsylvania marriage license be used in another state. Details, courthouse locations, and other information for separate counties in the area are listed below. All courthouse office hours listed are Monday through Friday.

In Pennsylvania, if either party is under 18, the consent of a parent or legal guardian is needed. Applicants who have been previously married must provide the following information concerning the dissolution of the most recent marriage: divorces - must present a certified copy of the decree (if maiden name has been resumed, must present that document); annulments - the same information as is required for divorces; and widowed - the date of death of the deceased spouse is needed. Blood relatives down to and including first cousins may not marry under Pennsylvania law.
Details are available on each county’s government website; by calling the phone number for the Register of Wills/Clerk of Orphans’ Court Office; or in person Monday through Friday during regular business hours, at least one-half hour before closing time.

Big Day?
Freshly Baked Cakes, Wedding Cakes Cookies, Pastries and Pies for Every Occasion
You’re making thousands of decisions; some as detailed as the color of the toothpicks that will serve your savory meatballs. You’re spending countless hours and energy on a ceremony, reception and honeymoon that’s only going to last a few hours in comparison to the years of real life ahead. So how are you planning to “live happily ever after,” hoping to beat the odds of divorce?

Now there’s a word you don’t want to hear as you’re planning your wedding! But statistics sound the alarm. About half of all first time marriages will end in divorce. Couples who have lived together before their weddings are no better off statistically. And if you’re in a re-marriage scenario … let’s just say the odds are not in your favor. So I ask you again: “Have you made the most important plans for your wedding? Have you planned to participate in some sort of pre-marital or re-marital education?” If you think “love will keep you together,” or that luck will help you beat the odds … then, good luck. But I want you to know that a good skill-based premarital / re-marital educational program can reduce your risk of divorce by as much as 30 percent! Research also suggests it can help reduce stress during this pre-wedding period. So a few wellspent hours planning and preparing for a lifetime together can be the best wedding plans you’ll ever make.
Free Wedding Cake Tasting and Consultation by Appointment!
So let’s get started. You want to look for a program that covers these areas:
Communication Skills: Communication is to your marriage what blood is to your bodies. Blood carries the nutrients that feed our bodies and hauls out the waste to keep us healthy. In our world of quick tweets and texts, we’ve lost some of the ability to have conversations that will maintain relationships and build intimacy.
Financial Issues:
Planner
Money issues are one of the top two causes of divorce. It’s important to begin thinking about and planning your new family budget. Who will manage the checkbook? How do you feel about spending, saving, giving and going into debt?

Conflict Resolution:
TheWeddingPlannerOnline.com
Don’t be naive … you and your future spouse will have conflicts. John Gottman, a marriage expert, says that a couple’s ability to resolve conflict is a great predictor of marriage success. So this is a skill that you want to master. Let’s be honest. If the two of you are having trouble resolving conflict now … what makes you think it will get better after you’re married?

Faith and Values Compatibility: For some, this is no problem. For others it can be a big issue. Few things drive us more than our core values and beliefs. So, it’s important that you’re aware of what really drives who you both are. The wise adage “Do not be unequally yoked” is worth thinking about for those who hold strong beliefs.
As always, we offer a large selection of Antique & Estate Jewelry. Check out our unique, one-of-a-kind pieces! Lay-a-ways Always Available
Family of Origin Issues:
Role Expectations: What are you expecting from your new husband? Is he aware of those expectations? Have you talked through them? What is he expecting from you? Don’t wait until you’ve tied the knot to have your expectations shattered.
Goal-setting and planning: The couple who fails to plan … plans to fail. What do you want your life as a couple to look like in 1, 3, 5, 10, 25 years? How many children do you want to have? What about careers or future education? What are you going to do to maintain and enrich your marriage?

Hopefully you see the value in planning for your “happily ever after.” Pre-marriage preparing isn’t a long process, especially if you feel you’re both starting out with solid foundations and only need some clarifications and goal-setting. If there is “baggage,” the process could take more time. Regardless, be sure to make the time to invest in your marriage. The return on this investment has the potential of being lifelong!

News Flash! You’re not the only ones getting married! Years of family “baggage” waits at the altar and walks down the aisle too! You’ve learned most of what you know about being married by watching your parents’ marriages. If they’re strong and healthy … you’re fortunate. If they weren’t … you have potential obstacles to overcome. These are good to deal with before the “waiting and walking.”

“Compare apples to apples. Break out packaging to compare with listed line items, so you know what you are paying for each. If you are able to purchase your own items, such as alcohol, you may come out ahead. Costco and The Restaurant Store have wedding tablecloths and wedding plastic ware that looks like china.” -Joyce Perkinson, director of sales at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, Lancaster

“Lighting your candles prior to the wedding will help them re-light easier and faster during the ceremony. Light the candlewick briefly, and then blow it out. Also, check the area around your candles. Test lighting will ensure that they will stay lit throughout the entire ceremony and won’t be extinguished due to overhead fans or air ducts.” -Kathy Brown, Keystone Candle, Harrisburg

“Dancing lessons are not only a great date night and a way to be in each other’s arms, but your guests will enjoy watching even the least choreographed first dance, rather than just the usual bride and groom swaying back and forth for three minutes. Starting a year in advance is not too soon, because it takes the pressure off trying to learn at the last minute and you can use your new skills at all your friends’ weddings you go to during your engagement period.”

“An engagement ring should not be valued by its cost, instead by what you can afford and what your heart tells you to get. You can get more bling for the buck by choosing silver or tungsten instead of platinum or gold, and semiprecious stones verses diamonds. Don’t trade in a mortgage for a diamond.”

“It’s easy to get caught up in the many details of a wedding, but never lose sight of the real meaning of that day. The day will come and go, but your family and partner are here to stay. Always remember to treat everyone with the love and respect they deserve.” -Jessica Finch, manager of Finch Jewelers, Lancaster
................................. “Be sure to allot enough time for photographs. Your wedding day will be hectic and over before you know it. You’ll want beautiful photographs to help commemorate your big day. Forty-five minutes or more between the ceremony and reception is usually a good time to get them done.” -Emily Wilcox, owner of Emily Grace Photography, Elizabethtown
