Two Acts To Provide Entertainment
Two organizations will provide entertainment during the 2019 West Lampeter Fair. Rannels Rustics chainsaw entertainment and the Awesome AG Magic Show will take turns wowing audiences each day of the fair. Rannels Rustics is the husband-and-wife team of Ben and MeLinda Rannels from Glasgow, Pa. Ben has been carving for more than a decade and has won many carving events across the U.S. He has taken first place and the People’s Choice Award at the National Road Chainsaw Carving Festival, and he has placed first in events in Ohio, New York, Mississippi, Texas, and Pennsylvania. Ben and MeLinda specialize in chainsaw art although they have made practical items like benches, tables, and other types of log furniture. When Ben and MeLinda perform at fairs, Ben works with logs that are 1 to 2 feet wide and 8 to 20 feet long. The finished objects are whimsical; at fairs this summer, the carvings have ranged from pumpkins bearing welcome signs to smiling pigs, tortoises, and even yetis. Performances will be offered on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 1, 3, 5, and 8 p.m.; on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 and 6 p.m.; and on Friday, Sept. 27, at noon and 2, 4, and 6 p.m. Folks will have the opportunity to take home completed carvings, as an auction of the items will take place at 6 p.m. on Sept. 27. Interested individuals may see examples of Ben and MeLinda’s work by finding “Rannels Rustics” on Facebook. The Awesome AG Magic Show is the brainchild of magician Mike Klee, who is based in Midlothian, Va. Klee’s shows are highly interactive, and he uses many volunteers from the audience. As the show’s name implies, Klee specializes in agriculture, and he aims to teach audiences about farm animals while keeping them laughing and marveling at what they see. Live animals, such as a rabbit and a rooster, often show up in his act. Klee is a skilled balloon artist, creating elaborate sculptures, centerpieces, and décor, and he typically incorporates simplified balloon art in the Awesome AG Magic Show. The Awesome AG Show will be presented on Sept. 25 at 4, 6, and 7 p.m.; on Sept. 26 at 4, 6:30, and 8:30 p.m.; and on Sept. 27 at 5, 7, and 9 p.m. Klee advertises his magic and comedy act at www.mikekleemagic.com.

West Lampeter Fair Queen
By Dayna M. Reidenouer Unlike many of her predecessors, 2018 West Lampeter Fair Queen Katrina Herrera did not have years of experiences at the fair to draw on when she answered the question “What does my fair mean to me?” during the application process. Rather, she had only attended the fair once, as Katrina and her mother, Liz Nolan, and her stepfather, Vince Nolan, moved to Lampeter from Delaware County at the beginning of her junior year at LampeterStrasburg (L-S) High School. She arrived just in time to attend the fair. “It started our love for this town,” Katrina recalled. Katrina is active in music and drama, so she volunteered at the fair’s burger stand with the music department. A few months later, Thespian Society adviser Michelle Myers suggested that Katrina compete for the fair queen title during her senior year. “I definitely felt a little intimidated (and) underqualified,” Katrina said. However, she opted to capitalize on her newness, as she could provide a relative outsider’s perspective. “Coming from another place helps you appreciate it,” she pointed out. “The fair is the culmination of the diversity of our community. It’s a visible representation of our community and our support system all in one place.” The West Lampeter Fair is dedicated solely to agriculture and homemaking, and although Katrina does not have a background in agriculture, she has been interested in sustainability for years. Fair queen coordinator Anita Martin provided encouragement and guidance, Katrina noted, saying, “I was surprised to learn how much power I have as a consumer. Anita told me, ‘As a consumer, you still have knowledge and a part to play.’” As fair queen, Katrina found herself playing a different part. She helped to award prize ribbons during the 2018 fair, distributed apples with Santa Claus on

the Strasburg Rail Road at Christmastime, rode in a 1965 Mustang convertible in Strasburg’s Memorial Day Parade, and attended the state fair queen competition in January. “As someone who’s done theater my entire life, I’m comfortable being in front of people and in social situations,” Katrina said. Even so, the state fair queen competition was potentially intimidating. “I thought it would be really stressful, but a lot was learning and interacting with the girls,” she shared. Katrina Herrera Approximately 60 local Fair Queen - West Lampeter Fair 2018 queens vied for the state title. They spent three days together as part of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs convention in Hershey. The girls were able to attend seminars, a trade show, and other activities, while also participating in pre-pageant interviews with a panel of judges and then appearing in the pageant itself. “It was very educational,” Liz commented. “They do so much for the girls.” “It seemed like every contestant (but me) lived on a farm,” Katrina added. “But it was a great experience to be thrust into a world you haven’t been immersed in before.” Katrina expressed gratitude to the women who have previously served as West Lampeter Fair queens, as there is a notebook passed down from each winner to the next. The notebook contains tips for reigning, as well as the questions asked at the state competition to help future queens prepare for that challenge. Katrina knows what advice she would like to give to her successor. “Definitely make the most of (your reign). It goes by quickly,” she said. “Don’t stress about the competition or a lack of an ag background.” Katrina graduated from L-S earlier this year, and she is now attending Penn State University, where she is part of the Schreyer Honors College. She is studying English, communication, business, and Spanish with the desire to eventually attend graduate school. “It was incredibly awesome to be fair queen,” Katrina said. “Lancaster County – especially L-S – is the most wonderful community.” Liz added, “As a mom, (the fair queen experience) was amazing. We will never leave this area. The fair has a special place in our hearts.”

WEST LAMPETER FAIR

Handling The Hassles Of Feeding The Crowds By Dayna M. Reidenouer One of the joys of attending the West Lampeter Fair is the abundance of freshly prepared hot foods and cold milkshakes. For countless years, Eric and Melissa Herr have coordinated the purchase and production of the tasty treats for nearly all the food stands. The process has required them to be nimble, as there are always challenges in ensuring fairgoers are fed. “We had to cut orders back last year because of weather,” Melissa recalled. “Last year was just a very hard year.” Two weeks before the 2018 fair, Darrenkamp’s Supermarket at Willow Valley Square informed the Herrs of its impending closure and that it would not be able to get the entirety of the fair’s order. Darrenkamp’s had been a longtime supporter of the fair, and Melissa remembers Joe Darrenkamp would check what she needed from the store before he started his shift in the funnel cake stand. To compound the stress, a large storm system moved in during the days before Fair Week and overstayed its welcome. That resulted in the oversaturation of the turfgrass fairgrounds and vehicles stuck in the meadows used as parking lots. “Last year was unprecedented. We’ve never had a fair like that,” Melissa said. “My father-in-law has been involved for 52 years, and he said he never saw it where no one could park on the grounds.” The fair board obtained permission from Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District to park vehicles on its campus and run shuttles to the fairgrounds. The shuttles were so well received that the board is considering operating a shuttle service again this year. Amending the food supply was more of a challenge. In the absence of Darrenkamp’s, the Herrs were able to source the necessary products from other vendors. The couple had some experience with this because in 2017, another vendor, the Strasburg Market Basket, closed a week before the fair opened. However, the difficult – and potentially
expensive – part was that last year’s attendance was about one-quarter of what it typically is, so the quantities of foods and beverages that were ordered and received at the start of the week were not consumed at the typical rate. That resulted in overwhelming numbers of leftover beverages, buns, and rolls, as well as dozens of pounds of meats, at the fair’s conclusion.
COMPLETE AUCTION SERVICE
“We have really had to (increase) our water,” Melissa said. “Last year, we had two-and-a-half pallets of water.”
Auctions We Conduct OUR LOCATION OR YOURS Call today to schedule your auction!
Monthly Consignment Auctions
“Sometimes they make out better at the auction. People are very generous,” Melissa commented. At the end of each night of the fair, the Herrs take inventory and compare it to the order for the next day. They also track food trends and adjust their orders accordingly. While the Herrs used to buy an equal number of rolls as burgers, they have changed the ratio because people are eating more double cheeseburgers and less gluten. The beverage orders have also been skewed in favor of water away from sodas and other sweetened beverages.
“It’ll come together,” Melissa commented. She noted that other new items are being considered as well. “We have a few things we’re still working on to see if they’re affordable.”
We have a large facility where we hold monthly consignment auctions such as Equipment, Tools, Building Material, Guns & Sporting Goods, Restaurant Equipment, Antiques, Coins, Furniture & Personal Property. Call today to consign your items.
While the Herrs are responsible for purchasing and maintaining the proper inventory, they depend on many volunteers to make the food stands successful. Thankfully, high school students who are members of Pioneer Interact and the FFA chapters from L-S and Penn Manor high schools are highly involved. However, many more people are needed to set up the fair and then tear it down.
Real Estate Division Licensed Auctioneer & Realtor FARMS, LAND, RESIDENTIAL OR COMMERCIAL We can assist you in buying selling.

“What’s really unique for us as a fair is that other fairs have a food truck or a church orders all the food and takes it home at the end, but it’s in our bylaws that we can’t have food trucks,” Melissa said. Instead, nonprofit organizations – many of which are part of the L-S school community – operate the food stands. The fair provides the products, equipment, and maintenance, and the groups supply the labor. For their efforts, the groups receive 40% of their respective profits. Thus, when items do not sell during the fair, the groups receive 40% of what their items sold for at the auction.
The menu at the fair has mainly stayed the same over the decades, primarily due to the limitations of the facilities. Melissa shared that battered vegetables have been high on her list of items to introduce at the fair, but there is nowhere to make them. Plus, renting fryers and running additional gas lines for the appliances is cost-prohibitive. This summer, she worked on a replacement for the Ocean Breeze slushies, which were sold near the cattle barn, because the vendor of the mixes and the machines went out of business. The plan is to offer waffles and ice cream instead. The frozen dairy dessert would come in square slices because it would be easier to store and serve. However, the fair does not have an extra freezer, so that creates another problem to be solved.
Real Estate, Farm Dispersals, Livestock, Business Liquidations, Antiques & Personal Property. Big or small, we do it all.
“We have to be back (at the fair) at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday to pack and (take) inventory,” Melissa said. “We pick up trash and put away the picnic tables. Often, it’s just a small handful of us. And then we have to get everything ready for the auction, and then after the auction, the room (where it is held) needs to be torn down.” R045201
3164 White Oak Rd., Quarryville, PA 17566 www.paauctioncenter.com
Thankfully, the expenses were able to be recouped somewhat at the annual auction. Everything remaining on the fairgrounds on Saturday of Fair Week is sold at the auction, from the salt and pepper shakers used in the restaurant in the fire station to the eggs and floral arrangements entered by exhibitors. Melissa carefully tracks what is sold at the auction so that the proceeds can be appropriately distributed.
Melissa noted that she has appreciated when families with children show up on Saturday morning to spend even a short time picking up trash, as it is never too early to teach the importance of community service. People who would like to volunteer in some way may email lampeterfair@comcast.net.

Eagle Scout Projects Add More Tables To The Fair
By Dayna M. Reidenouer When fairgoers want to relax while they enjoy sausage sandwiches from the Garden Spot FFA stand or walking tacos from the Pioneer Interact booth, they will have brand-new options for seating. As his Eagle Scout project, Alex Landis of Boy Scout Troop 393 in Willow Street coordinated the construction of 20 picnic tables for the fair. Alex, who is the son of Lee and JJ Landis of Lampeter, credited Scoutmaster Neal Kuhn with the idea to ask the fair board if picnic tables would be useful. The group agreed, and Alex got to work. He encountered a challenge almost right away: building the prototype. “Fortunately, one of the Scout leaders, Ken Neumann, is a woodworker, and he helped me come up with a plan on how to build the tables,” Alex said. Then, Alex had to raise the money to cover the cost of materials for the tables. He utilized social media to announce the project and
offer the opportunity of sponsoring a table for $200. The response was overwhelming. “We had a huge response to our fundraising efforts. We actually had too many people that wanted tables. I had to turn people away who wanted to sponsor a table because the fair could only use so many tables,” Alex remarked. “The community is very generous with their support.” Alex and about 25 people – including Scouts, parents, and other helpers – spent eight nights working on the construction. Each table has an engraved plaque identifying its sponsor. One of the Scouts who helped with the construction was Aidan Wiley, who is also working toward the rank of Eagle Scout. Because so many people wanted to contribute to the table project, Aidan asked for and received permission to build high-top tables for the fair. Sponsorships of $100 were available for the tall tables where people may stand to enjoy their refreshments. Alex said he planned to help Aidan build the tables. Both Scouts still have additional requirements to meet before they earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Alex estimated that it might take him another year. He is pleased to have completed a significant requirement and to have made a positive impact on the community. “It feels good to know that lots of people that I know will benefit from this project,” Alex said.
