KIDS’ GAMES IN THE PAST AND NOW Descriptions of our relatives’ favourite games from the past

Games from Spain: SEVEN LIVES (Les set vides) There are two teams in this game. Team A is placed in two fiels while team B is in the middle. Team A has to hit someona in team B without the ball touching the ground. One by one, all members from the opposite team should be defeated. the team in the middle has to win lives by catching the ball before it hits the ground. With those lives you can save someone in your team or guard yourself (maximum seven lives for each player. The team, which is in two fields wins when it gets to eliminate the last player of the oppsosite team. On the other hand, if he/she dodges the ball seven times, every time an opponent is eliminated, the seven-pass count starts from zero. Material needed: plastic or foam ball. LAWN BOWLING (Petanca) To play this game you need 3 metal balls and a small ball called a jack. First of all, you have to place he small ball 8 metres far from the player. The goal of the game is to toss or roll these steel ball as close as possible to the small ball, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground. If you hit that ball you win, if not, another player tosses his/her balls. This game can be played in the street and there's no players limit. HIDE AND SEEK (La pita amagar) It's a game in which any number of players conceal themselves in the environement, to be found one by one or more seekers. One player, who has been chosen, closes his/her eyes and counts to a predetermined number in the home base ("casa"), while other players hide. After reaching this number, the one in charge of seeking others calls a sentence to warn others and the attemps to locate all concealed players. The hiders can either remain hidden or they can come out and run towards the home base. Once they touch it they are safe and cannot be tagged. The game finishes when the last person is tagged. There are plenty of songs that go along with the game. NOUGHTS AND CROSSES (Tres en ratlla) To play this game two players are needed and also a board and three counters for each player. The first player places a counter in the middle of the board. Then, the second player puts another counter in another place. Thew first player who gets to place three counters in a row is the winner. THE SPINNING TOP (La trompa) For this game you only need a spinning top and a string or rope coiled around its axis which, when pulled quickly, causes a rapid unwinding. To make it funnier, while the top is rolling on the ground we can grab it and pass it from one hand to the other. The winner is the one who is able to have the top spinning for longer. SKIP THE ROPE (Botar a la corda) Materials needed: a rope Two participants grab the two ends of the rope and make it roll. At the same time other children skip it and the one who touches the rope is eliminated. The speed will gradually increase according to the lenght of the one who is skipping. There's no players limit and it's great singing a song while playing it.



Games from Poland: Szpak (pronounced as shpack): You need: two sticks (one has to be longer than the other) Number of players: 3 to 5 Rules: You start with drawing a line – it’s called a border. One participant stands on the line with the longer stick in his/her hand. This participant has to hit the shorter stick with the longer stick as hard as he/she can (like in baseball). The shorter stick should fly for a long distance and then fall down. All the participants have to run towards the place where the stick lies. The first person who catches the shorter stick is the winner and is thenext person who stands on the line and hits the stick. Podchody (pronounced as podhodi): You need: good running shoes, a piece of chalk, some paper and pens, some tasks to do by the participants (they can be connected with general knowledge, their sports abilities etc., the tasks can be also riddles and puzzles), at least 2-3 hours time Number of players: the more the better (not less than 6) Rules: You have to divide into 3 or more groups with at least 2 participants in each. One group is the group of ESCAPERS and the other groups are SEARCHERS. The escapers set of as the first. They choose the ROUTE and follow it, marking their way with arrows drawn with chalk. The arrows shouldn’t be to close and should be drawn in different places (on the ground, on building’s walls, on the trees etc.). Between the arrows they have to put some tasks for other groups – the tasks are to help the searchers find the TARGET. The target is the place where the escapers will be waiting. The searchers set off about 20 minutes after the escapers. They follow the route marked by the escapers and do the tasks in order to get some hints about the target where escapers are waiting. The first group who finds the escapers is the winner. Chinese ropes: You need: a long piece of elastics in the form of a circle Number of players: 3 or more Rules: The aim of this game is to jump over the elastics stretched between two participants. The player who jumps can’t step on the elastics. When he fails he must switch places with one of the participants who stretch the elastics. When he is back to the game, he starts from the level which he ended previously. Steps of stretching the elastics: at the beginning, elastics is stretched between the ankles of participants who stretch it. When the player finishes the level, elastics is lifted up. The next levels are knees, waist and neck. Pebbles: You need: 7 pebbles (the same size) Number of players: 1 or more Rules: Put six pebbles in the circle on the ground, table etc. Take the seventh pebble and throw it up. When it’s in the air, try to take one pebble from the circle and then catch the pebble falling down. You have to do it very fast. If you manage to do this, you put the pebble from the circle aside. You win if you collect all the pebbles from the circle.


Finka game: You need: a small knife called Finka in Polish Number of players: 1 or more Rules: You can play this game only outside. Take the knife and put it on your finger. Throw the knife up so that it turns around in the air and sticks into the ground. The blunt ending of the knife cannot touch the ground! If you manage to do this, you throw the knife from your hand, elbow, shoulder and chin. The first person who finishes all the stages wins.





Games from Bulgaria: King - Portalyu This is one of the favorite children's games. To be more fun is nice to have at least 6-7 children. Two stand against each other, grab your hands and raise them, making "gate" to each other.
