retz Yisrael is a nation of immigrants who’ve been transplanted from every corner of the world. What we have in common is our Jewishness, but from the perspective of diversity, we are probably among the most diverse nations in the world as we bring together individuals from different climates from Siberia to South America, cultures from Morocco to Los Angeles, and cataclysmic events from the Holocaust to the Jewish expulsion from Arab lands and the Ethiopian Exodus. If you’ve ever transplanted a seedling from a pot to the earth, or from one corner of the garden to another, then you know it’s a delicate process. You make sure that the hole in the ground has room for the dangling roots, that there’s water for the plant to drink but not too much water, and not too much sun because it can overwhelm the plant before it gets established. But if the transplant takes to its new home, the results can be spectacular.

Most of you reading here are veterans of this transplanting process which was the realization of your insistent dream. But, as is true with all transplants, the beginnings can be rough. The sounds of the new language have a foreign taste in your mouth, the bureaucracy can be maddening, the cultural differences painful and confusing, and money, jobs, and housing might not come easy. But

once the roots take hold in the new soil, the difficulties become woven into a tapestry of life that is vibrant with discoveries, celebrations, and insights that could never have happened anywhere else.

After the tragic terrorist attack two weeks ago that took the lives of four in a Paris supermarket, many more Jews in France are now considering the possibility of pulling up their roots and coming here to build a new life (see this week’s article “Will French Jews Be Coming to Eretz Yisrael?”). The momentum has been building during recent years. Rising anti-Semitism has been erupting in a string of deadly terrorist attacks against the Jews of France who number around half a million and are counted as the third largest concentration of Jews in the world. With 7,000 French Jews who came on aliyah last year, they constitute the greatest number of new immigrants from any foreign country in 2014. The number of French Jews who come on aliyah is expected to rise to 15,000 in 2015. “Escape velocity,” the energy and motivation needed to leave the known and embrace the unknown, is building among the French Jews. May Hashem strengthen them, protect them, and bring them home. Have a beautiful Shabbos,

Sincerely and with thanks in advance,

ear Robert:

My name is Moshe. I am a baked goods supplier to many small stores and just received an order from Costco, which is a new account that should grow nicely in the coming few months as our products are rolled out in Costco stores across the Unites States. I had a VERY disappointing experience with your company this past week. After I was told you have a product in stock and that I could come pick it up, I drove from Philadelphia all the way to your headquarters today to pick it up, a drive of almost two hours. When I arrived I was told that while you have four cases in stock, since one of your current clients [name expunged] “might” run short and need them, your company cannot give me any, even the one box that I need urgently. I’m sure you have customers that buy every month, more than I might buy in total over a year. But at the same time, I am sure that this is not the type of experience you want a customer to have with your company. I bring this to your attention, hoping that this disappointment can be the catalyst for a fruitful business relationship going forward. I would take the time to drive down again tomorrow morning if that is what it would take to pick up one box just so I can deliver this week’s order to Costco in the right size package instead of the “second class,” slightly off measurement food box that I was unhappily forced to settle for. The product code is 5B14ZT. I look forward to hearing from you and to a wonderful business relationship. I can be reached at (office phone no.) or (cell phone no.). With your permission, when I come tomorrow to get my box, I will bring you a box of yummy cinnamon buns as a gift with my compliments, so you can taste the goodness for yourself.  Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Moshe --The above letter, changed just enough as to protect my client’s interests, is an actual letter that one of my clients had me write, so that he could succeed in getting the packaging he needed. He was dealing with a very large company that, as you can see from the letter, would not give him what he needed even after they’d assured him on the phone that they had the product in stock. This letter is an example of effective copywriting, no different than when I write a letter for a client that might be mailed to thousands of people, the wording for an ad or advertorial, or copy for a website. This letter is intended to reach one particular person (and I can’t always guarantee the results, obviously), but it can make a major difference to a business, even though no one but the targeted recipient of the letter ever sees it. In that case, it is well worth investing the time to do it professionally. Using tools like LinkedIn and rappaportiive, I was able to identify the company CEO and his direct email address. And I’m happy to report that, baruch Hashem, this letter precipitated a call by the division manager. The CEO had forwarded the letter to him, and he immediately called my client to make things right. I hope you find it worthwhile to re-read and study the different steps taken in each paragraph to bring about the result we hoped to achieve. We had gone over the head of the division manager who had originally been unable to give my client what he needed. We went “top down” to get to someone who could turn the initial “no” into a “yes.” Even the biggest corporations are run by people. I’ve written similar letters to companies like Amazon on a client’s behalf to reopen closed accounts, and to major companies to try to get an approval overriding a decision made down the ladder. Copywriting has been described as “salesmanship in print.” Instead of selling one-to-one, you can sell one-to-many, which continued on page 27

WILL FRENCH JEWS BE COMING HOME TO ERETZ YISRAEL?

By Naomi B rudner

The Danger

for

Jews

in

France

The recent terrorist attacks in Paris, especially the Friday afternoon one which targeted a kosher supermarket where Jews were making their last purchases for Shabbos, has filled the French populace and, in particular, the Jews with fear and foreboding. After Thursday's attack on a newspaper office which claimed 12 lives, the talk was: “What and who will be next?” It didn't take long to find out, as by Friday afternoon, four innocent Jews had been murdered and 22 were taken hostage. With Hashem's great rachamim, the hostages were saved. Once again the question is not: “Will this continue and how can we stop these attacks?” Rather, the question is one which is obvious to anyone who can see what's happening: "Where and when will be the next attack?" It isn’t even a question of which country it will be, for it’s clear that France has been targeted for terror, with its population of tens of millions of Muslims who are not outsiders but rather citizens who grew up there. And once again, Jews are the primary target. Security has been beefed up in all Jewish institutions, from schools to synagogues, but the fear is still there. The terrorists are vicious and rather than fearing death, they consider a "martyr's death" to be a great and even desired "achievement," if not goal. What chance do civilized people have against people like this, people described in the Torah as pereh adam, wild people, who take the form of humans, but whose essence is their animalistic savagery. Now more than ever, almost all the Jews in France wear caps rather than yarmulkes in the streets and are generally careful to make sure that their distinctive dress does not give them away. This past Shabbos night, the shuls were closed in Paris and then, after the "all clear" was given, only some of January 23, 2014

them opened their doors for the morning prayers. And it is not only the Jewish population which is afraid. On Sunday, on a main street in Paris, most restaurants and coffee shops were closed and few people were on the street. People are staying indoors as much as possible, not knowing when and where the next attack will be. All the people, and especially the Jews, are filled with terror, and many, many French Jews are speaking of aliyah. On the other hand, the opinion has been expressed that once some time goes by and people get back into their normal routine, the urgency of leaving France will evaporate, and even those who had definite intentions to come to Eretz Yisrael will put off doing so, even indefinitely.

French Denial

that

Jews Are Being Targeted

Many thought that after what happened last week and the ensuing world-wide reaction the situation of French Jewry would improve. However, that wasn't to be. At Sunday's demonstration in Paris to protest the recent terrorist attacks, there was a huge turnout of close to four million French protesters! Though Jewish residents of France were targeted and murdered, not a word was said by the French government about Jews or anti-Semitism in France. Similarly, in the French newspapers, nothing was said about the attack being specifically against the Jews. French Jews were in shock. Not Friday following the attack, Shabbos, Motzei Shabbos, or Sunday was anything at all said about the Jews being targeted for terrorist attacks, or even the fact that four Jews were killed simply because they were Jewish. The Muslims are well aware of this official stance by the French government. Sunday’s demonstration did not

10

Current turn out to be a demonstration of solidarity with the Jews of France as was anticipated by French Jews. Will these developments cause more French Jews to consider making aliyah? Logically, it should. Though some 7,000 French Jews made aliyah last year, more than in any previous years, the numbers have not reached the proportions that one would expect, especially considering that there have been terrible terrorist attacks against Jews in the recent past. Many would think that last week's tragic events and the concomitant expectation of future terrorist incidents would cause a tremendous rise in aliyah. However, though that would be the logical, intelligent response, many say that it isn’t the case. The explanation for this is simply that it's extremely difficult to leave a country where you’re used to the way everything works and you have a comfortable standard of living. Moving to Eretz Yisrael means going to live in the Land that is yours, but it may feel “foreign” to you in so many ways. One would think that these factors pale in comparison to the dangers of staying in France but nevertheless, the reluctance to leave France is being voiced, even now.

Making

the

Move

I spoke to some French Jews who have made aliyah to hear how they view the situation, and also how they see the future of the Jews in France. Again and again, I heard that Eretz Yisrael is the only place to be and the French Jews should come as quickly as possible. At the same time, I heard what all of us olim know -- how hard it is to leave the country we grew up in and resettle in Eretz Yisrael. Said one immigrant: "Though the mind says that aliyah is the right thing to do, the heart says: But I'm so used to my home, friends, food, culture, language, and everything else that I have lived with in France. Surely in Israel it will be very different. It will be harder. And that’s true. But aliyah is the best thing to do in any case." Most French Jews who have already made the move agree that the change is great and the adjustment can be difficult. However, despite all the challenges that go along with aliyah, they have dealt with them and are ultimately grateful that they came. As one immigrant said: "It's not easy for any of the olim, whether from France, America, South Africa, England, or anywhere else. But we did it and so can you. It's worth it on so many levels – for you, for your children, and your grandchildren. In chutz l'Aretz the threat is physical and also spiritual. Assimilation and intermarriage are constantly increasing, so for that reason, too, you should come here. The change is difficult, but the price you pay if you don't come can be devastating." Everyone I spoke to agreed that if French Jews or any other well-to-do Jews, for that matter, come to Eretz Yisrael with the intention of recreating their previous standard of living, they will be disappointed and frustrated. Few, if any, will be able to have as fine a house, car, clothing, and so on, compared to what they had before they made aliyah. (How many Americans do we know who gladly traded a villa with a private pool in the U.S. for a four or five room apartment in Yerushalayim?) Also, few olim are effortlessly handed a well-paying profession. Often there has to be retraining, as is the case of dentists whose certification is not completely recognized here. A rabbi from France who made the move to Eretz Yisrael January 23, 2014

and was interviewed on Radio Kol Chai regarding French aliyah, said that even rabbis will often have to take new examinations in order to be awarded smicha here. However, in most cases, if the person has the right motivation, he can make the transition successfully, b’ezras Hashem. Many French Jews who have already made aliyah recommend that when making their plans to come to Eretz Yisrael, French Jews should try to do so together with others whom they already know. This can make the whole process smoother and more comfortable. Every single person I spoke with pointed out that the difficulties can be resolved if you come here with the right motivation and attitude. It’s vital to have spiritual as well as material aspirations, and then Hashem helps you to succeed.

The Many Calls

to

Come

Meanwhile, the Israeli government has begun major efforts to absorb French immigrants as best as possible. Natan Sharansky, the Head of the Jewish Agency, said: "The Jewish Agency embraces the French Jewish community at this difficult time . . . and is increasing our assistance to any individual who wishes to immigrate to Israel, and is working to ease immigrants' integration into the Israeli workforce and Israeli society." Nir Barkat, the Mayor of Yerushalayim, was also encouraging: "Brothers and sisters, the gates of Yerushalayim are open to you. Zion and the entire Jewish world stand beside you.” Yet still, the voices of hesitation are heard about how hard it is to make aliyah. One American woman I spoke with addressed this unwillingness to make aliyah when she observed: "It's eerie to see the similarities between what's happening today and what happened in pre-Holocaust Europe. Then, too, there were many Jews who had reasons for not leaving. They didn't leave, and they didn't survive, Hy"d. “After all that happened, one would think that the Jewish people would have learned a lesson. They may say that it's also dangerous in Eretz Yisrael, and it may seem to be, but it is certainly safer than anywhere else in the world. It is written that Hashem takes special care of the Yidden in Eretz Yisrael: 'His Eyes are constantly upon it, from the beginning of the year until the end of the year.’ Eretz Yisrael is the right place to be and the safest place to be." Many people add to this parallel between the pre-Holocaust era and today that all the turmoil in the world is a sign of the coming of the Moshiach, b’ezras Hashem. This is still another reason not to expect things to get any better outside of Israel and to know that as history unfolds, the best place to be now is in Eretz Yisrael. One American oleh conveyed this message to the Jews in France: "Please come! We are all one family, all brothers and sisters. We will help you, and we will also certainly gain from your presence here with us. Please come as soon as possible, and together we will fulfill the Jewish destiny of Am Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael." On the Sunday night news in Eretz Yisrael after Friday morning’s terrorist attack in the kosher supermarket, it was reported that the great posek, HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, shlita, said to tell all the Jews in France: "Come to Eretz Yisrael!"

Out & About

This January 20th will mark the seventy-second anniversary of the Wannsee Conference called together by H itler , y ”sh , to discuss the implementation of The Final Solution against the J ewish People. In the long history of our People , there had been

The Three Wannsee Conferences

similar evil conferences to threaten our survival.

T

he Gemara in Sanhedrin speaks of what could be described as the first Wannsee Conference that took place in Egypt 3,400 years ago. There, Pharaoh said to his three advisors: "Come let us outsmart them." In essence, the king of Egypt was saying: "Let’s work out a final solution." Pharaoh agreed with Bilam’s suggestion that they put into operation a kind of Mengele selection by killing off the baby boys. They tried to enlist the help of the Hebrew midwives Shifra and Pu'a, who would act as “kapos,” cooperating to see that all went smoothly. However, these righteous women refused to do the dirty work. Next, Pharaoh enrolled his whole nation to help in The Final Solution for the Hebrews. He issued a general order to throw all baby boys in the Nile, but everyone knew this really meant the only Israelite babies. Pharaoh was covered, in case the U.N. would send the Red Cross to investigate. Of course this was not a case of Egyptian anti-Semitsm, only a way of solving the annoying problem of too many males. The second Wannsee Conference had had only two participants-Achashverosh and Haman. In the Midrash this is compared to two men who had bordering fields. Each plot had a defect. One field had a large mound in it, while the other had a great pit. The owner of the field with the pit asked his neighbor to sell him the mound. The other responded happily: "Take it for free." Both Achashverosh and Haman hated us. Achashverosh was jealous of the Jews and in awe of the Jewish genius. Jews filled all the important posts in his 127 states. Even in the capital, did not Mordechai sit at the King's gate, despite the fact he was a Jew? Achashverosh looked from the bottom up at us, with envy filling his whole being. The distance from jealousy to hate is but a hair’s breadth. Haman’ anti-semitism was exactly the opposite. He looked at us from the top down and despised us. The offer of money for a whole nation shows his disdain. He even tells the King: "Why keep them around? It’s not worth your while."

Achashverosh was no less of a Jew-hater then Haman. He was delighted that the Agagi was ready to do the dirty work of clearing his kingdom of Jews and making it Judenrein. To show that he endorsed the plan, he took off his ring and gave it to Haman. On January 20, 1942, the third Wannsee Conference was held in a villa in Wannsee, a suburb of Berlin. Here, senior officials of the Nazi German regime discussed the logistical details of The Final Solution to make the world Judenrein. This was all planned with great cunning. All six death camps would only be in Poland, for if the world would object and bomb the railway tracks

By Vardah Littman As H eard

to the camps, the German countryside would not suffer. Everything was done in a most precise and orderly fashion. Each of the death factories was placed near a large Jewish community: Auschwitz-Birkenau near Krakow, Belzec near Lwo`w, Chelmno not far from Lodz, Majdanek near Warsaw, Sobibor near Bialystok , and Treblinka near Bialystok and Warsaw. An estimated 3.5 million Jews were killed in these six extermination camps. Later on in the war, Eichmann, who participated in the conference, offered to stop the exportation of one million Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz in exchange for ten thousand trucks. Haman was prepared to pay ten thousand loaves of silver if Achashverosh would allow him to implement The Final Solultion. We see an astonishing parallel in that both rashaim wanted to use the measure of ten thousand.

Question: My baby was crawling very nicely and shows signs that he wants to start walking. Should I encourage his efforts in that direction? In a recent TEU article about the importance of crawling, the author wrote that every day of additional crawling time contributes to a child’s development. Should I discourage my baby from walking and for how long?

Dvorah Lowenthal,

mom with early walkers

Yes, crawling is very important, but each child is different. Some crawl for a year and a half, others crawl for only a month. Curiosity fuels the child to explore his or her environment, by reaching further and further. When it comes to buying their shoes, you don’t have to run out and buy their first pair of shoes just yet. I sold children's shoes for over four years. They really need shoes only to protect their little feet when they are really walking (usually around age two). Socks with grippers inside the house and other indoor places is just fine for keeping their feet warm and somewhat clean, and for helping them not to slip and fall down. Yes, encourage your child when they stand on their own, and when they take those first steps on their own. When you see how frustrated they are at trying to walk, take their hand and walk with them. For now, allow their inbred curiosity to give the child the impetus to reach for more. And get down on the floor with your crawler and help them to enjoy what is in view—which is great exercise for us too. Enjoy the exploration, and don't forget to child-proof your home now. Also, enjoy the pleasure of success on that shinning little face, and remember that morning bracha we make. It isn't for when we are learning to walk, it is meant for us who have been practicing for years.

Answer from UPDATE reader A.P. W eingort: Yes, crawling time is extremely precious, and experience has shown that the crawling movement is crucial for brain development. What is important to remember is that every healthy baby will learn to walk on his own, independently, without help from his parents, and that is actually what we prefer. This is because part of learning to walk is learning to balance oneself, and it is best for the baby to develop his own sense of balance from within. Therefore, if your baby has been crawling for a while, you need not discourage him from walking, yet you do want to let him advance on his own. Of course, you want to take pride in his accomplishments and express your excitement when he pulls himself up to stand for the first time, when he takes his first step, etc., but it is definitely not a good idea to make a habit of “walking” him, to buy him shoes, or in any way to “help” him learn to walk. He will do so independently when he is really ready. Of course, there are exceptions. A baby of two years old who is not walking yet, or has other developmental issues may need help. Also, a baby who crawls but does not yet use the cross pattern –putting the right hand and left foot forward simultaneously, and then the left hand with the right foot simultaneously-- should be encouraged to crawl as much as possible. Rather than teach him to walk, use the time to read to him, show him pictures, sing to him and converse with him— activities which also further brain development.

New question from one of our readers: My two and a half year old is suddenly trying to be very independent. She insists on pouring her own milk and carrying her plate to the table. On one hand, I want her to explore her new-found abilities, but on the other hand, I’m tired of picking up broken plates and wiping all the spills. How should I approach this stage in her development?

Leadership Through Action by

can we learn from

Moshe Rabbeinu’s

outstanding qualities of leadership as we are

W

inundated by pre- election promises and politics?

ords along with images tend to capture our minds more than anything else. We buy into attractive deals and bargains which are all rooted in a crafty selection of words. We succumb to the manipulative world of advertising which offers us items we don't really need or have any interest in, only to find ourselves struggling to de-clutter our homes.

So too in our current political environment: We are so bombarded with catchy slogans and political propaganda that we too easily put our trust in unreliable promises made by politicians to improve our lives, whether it be our standard of living, health, or national security. In addition, politics can simply turn into a nasty game of words which are used to harass and manipulate with the goal of gaining power and control over the other. We too believe that our words give us a sense of power, prestige, and leadership, but it's the Jewish leader in these parshas, Moshe Rabbeinu, who more than anyone else disproved this theory. Moshe Rabbeinu was certainly no man of words in that he didn’t use words to impress others. He was a stutterer whose words were his very weakness. He relied on G-d to speak through his voice. Moshe Rabbeinu was not an orator and not a politician, but a true leader in every sense. He did not manifest his leadership through the power of his words, but rather through the power of his actions. His exemplary leadership was expressed through his sense of responsibility for the Jewish people, January 23, 2014

through his compassion, selflessness, love and devotion towards them, and through his endless tolerance and patience for them. He stayed awake for hours on end listening to their personal problems and judging their individual cases. True leaders are those who possess fine qualities rather than those with a fortune in words. True leaders lead by their noble actions and not by their eloquent speech. Silence combined with a c t ion s speak

loud er than words and bring about a positive change in society. If we look back through Jewish history, we see how Queen Esther was praised for her silence – her ability to keep her Jewish identity a secret from King Achashverosh. She acted to save the Jewish nation and bring them to do tshuva on a large scale when she invited Achashverosh to her feast together with Haman in order to bring about Haman’s downfall. It was Rachel Imeinu who did not use words to console Leah on the night of her deceptive marriage to Yaakov but rather took immediate action by giving the signs she had made with Yaakov over to her

sister. Her silence combined with her act of selflessness awakened HaKadosh Baruch Hu's compassion for Am Yisrael. It's this very noble and righteous deed of Rachel our matriarch which, please G-d, in the very near future will bring salvation to all of Klal Yisrael and redeem us from the darkness of our long and bitter exile. In today’s political and social climate, we need to learn to master our words instead of being totally enslaved to them. Our influence in politics may be limited but we certainly do have the ability to bring about change in the world. We each can become leaders in our unique individual way as we lead not by words, but rather through mindful and meaningful action.

Serial Chapter SIX by

Chana Rubin

TO LIVE IN

JERUSALEM S

ara was frantically dusting the furniture for the second time that day. Reuven’s mother was arriving from LA and he was on his way to the airport to pick her up. Sara made sure everything looked sparkling. She even attempted a complete sponja of all the floors, clumsily squeegeeing most of the Ritzpaz and water out onto the mirpesset. She felt the sense of satisfaction that she imagained every Israeli housewife must feel when she heard the dirty water go out the long pipe from the porch into the garden downstairs. Sara went into the kitchen to bake a chocolate cake in the wonder pot. She hoped it wouldn’t stick to the sides of the pot as it usually did and consulted with her neighbor Orna who instructed her on how to slather the margarine. Sara knew that her mother-in-law, Sylvia Gilbert, was something of a perfectionist and Sara was anything but. She said a silent prayer for success as she lit the gas under the wonder pot. Sara noticed her breathing was rapid and her face was flushed. Mother-in-law anxiety. Sylvia Gilbert couldn’t believe she was actually in Israel, as she stood near all the luggage trying to identify her own. Her new status as a widow came with so many conflicting emotions. Yes, she was relieved that Ben wasn’t suffering anymore. And yes, she was relieved that she wasn’t suffering anymore under the burden of his long illness. But maybe this trip was jumping the gun. Should she start living so soon after Ben’s passing? Sylvia remembered her conversation with Lila, her sisterin-law. She was really the one responsible for this trip. “Ricky’s wedding was lovely, Sylvie, really lovely. Sid and I were so happy to be there for it.”

“And how! Remember when Sammy had the grippe and she wanted me to paint his throat with kerosene! She said that’s what her mother used and they were all still alive! Oy vey, don’t remind me. “But, Sylvie, the truth is we now have the experience of years and a lot more wisdom than ever before,” continued Lila. “Who can show the younger generation if not us?” “Hmmm,” agreed Sylvia, reluctantly. She could sense that Lila was taking this conversation into her own hands and was curious to see where it would end up. Lila went on: “Ricky is ten thousand miles away with this Sara – she’s so lovely, really, but they are so far away. You barely know her. You met her for lunch three days before the wedding. I mean, ‘Who is she?’” “Lila, I’m sure she is just right for Ricky. He’s 35 years old. He knows what he’s doing. He’s a big boy!” retorted Sylvia, hoping to quiet Lila’s insistent prying. “I know what I’d do if I were in your position.” Lila threw out the bait. Sylvia was silent for a moment, but then she couldn’t help herself. “What would you do?” “I’d make a little visit to Israel. That’s what I would do. You've got a good excuse. It's been 15 years since that UJA mission. Remember? I fell and broke my ankle getting off the camel. And we saw the plaque honoring you as president of our Hadassah Women’s chapter on the wall at Hadassah Hospital . “You could visit cousins Ahuva and Zev on the kibbutz and Solly and Miriam in Tel Aviv. Sylvie, it’s a great idea. I’m sure Ricky would love it! And you could see what is really going on.”

TO LIVE IN

“I’m so glad you came, too. You were a big support to me, Lila. I don’t think I could have done it by myself, so soon after Ben’s passing.”

Sylvia felt her spirits pick up for the first time since Ben’s passing. She would call the travel agent first thing in the morning. She’d send a telegram to Ricky and Sara and tell them her dates.

JERUSALEM

“She’s a lovely girl, that Sara. Really lovely. And so smart. Really smart. I’m sure she knows how to run a house. Aren’t you?”

“Mmm-mm. Ricky seems happy by the tone of his letters. He calls himself Reuven now. You know that’s his Jewish name.” “These Orthodox engagements are so fast. They barely knew each other.”

“They’ll find out about each other, soon enough, Lila. They’re in Israel with no one to interfere. Do you remember how it was with Mama Frances, she should rest in peace? She used to come into the house and I’d quake like jell-o. She loved to tell me what to do with the children. She believed in the mother-in-law knew best theory.”

January 23, 2014

Maybe she should check to see if they even wanted her to come. No, of course they’d want her to come. She wouldn’t be a meddling mother-in-law. She would keep her mouth shut and just make sure everything was going well. She felt a wave of guilt. She had never travelled anywhere without Ben, he should rest in peace, but she had to start living again. He’d want her to be happy. “Lila, sometimes you’re brilliant!” Standing by the luggage turnstile, Sylvia’s reverie came to an abrupt halt when she heard a voice from behind, “Mom, you made it!” She saw her son, mature-looking and happy and all she could do was melt into tears. To be continued

DO YOU NEED ORTHODIC SHOE INSERTS? TIPS FROM MORDECHAI FARKASH OF FARKASH ORTHODIC INSERTS ON HOW TO GET THE RIGHT INSERTS FOR YOUR FEET When a person needs orthopedic shoe inserts, what is he actually looking for? What factors are important? There are so many choices that it’s easy to get confused and frustrated. The salesman at the orthodic store may try to explain to him how the inserts are made, how many years of experience the business has, about their upscale workshop, their computerized and 3D examinations and the material they use for their inserts. But do these facts help a person understand what will really help him and what kind of orthodic inserts he needs? No, the consumer is totally dependent on what the salesman tells him and, in the long run, he will order whatever the salesman persuades him to buy.

arch is at its maximum height. The model of the foot in this position becomes the indicator for the orthopedist. From my experience, this method has a major disadvantage. When you make the inserts according to this model, they cause pressure on the foot and are very uncomfortable. Sometimes, a ready-made standard insert can give better results than a hard, uncomfortable plastic insert that may cost NIS 2,500 or more.

In order to figure out what to do, it is important for the consumer to understand what his inserts are trying to do for him. They are trying to correct an orthopedic problem in the sole of his foot, like an improper positioning or alignment of the foot, uneven weight distribution, etc. The inserts support the foot and hold it in a proper position as much as possible.

At Farkash Orthodic Inserts, we measure the foot in a standing position on one foot with the foot bearing maximum weight. Once the cast has dried, I adjust it and sand it down according to my estimation from actual observation of the foot based on the experience I have acquired over my many years in the business. I try to create a balance between the foot’s existing condition and its optimal condition and also try to have the weight distributed evenly. I build the orthodic inserts based on the cast model and put in my utmost effort to prepare the insert in a way that it treats the foot’s problems. This involves expert examination of the foot in several different positions to determine exactly the type of treatment necessary.

The orthodic inserts have to be constructed according to a very exact impression of the foot. This is done by making a plaster model of the foot. The client places his foot into a spongy material. Plaster of Paris is then poured into this imprint to create an accurate positive model of the foot. The orthodic inserts are made according to these models. However, if the foot has a deformity like a fallen arch, the plaster model will have the same deformity and the orthodic inserts will automatically have the deformity and instead of helping the problem, they will maintain the current situation. Most orthodic clinics that manufacture inserts (rather than selling ready-made ones) will take the foot measurements in a neutral position with the client sitting down and the foot not bearing any weight. When the foot is in this position, up in the air, without bearing weight, the inner

I have found that it works much better to take impressions of the foot in a standing weightbearing position more similar to when the person is walking, standing or running in the positon where their foot needs the support more.

Since the major factors for an insert to help the patient are proper measurement, construction and accurate adjustment of the insert, it is extremely important that the same technician who builds and adjusts the insert should be the one who actually examined the foot. A reliable orthodic clinic should have its own workshop, and be able to easily make adjustments on the spot. In addition, many places sell ready-made inserts which are made in China, like a convenience item.

one foot bearing maximum body weight

foot in neutral position

standard wooden bloCK foot model

These inserts are not produced according to a human foot model, but actually according to wooden dummy foot models. It’s no wonder that these inserts do not provide solutions for foot problems. When we are talking about soft inserts, the situation is usually that even if they don’t help, no damage is caused. Hard ready-made inserts, sometimes call bio-mechanical, can actually cause damage. There is no substitute for a custom fitted and crafted orthodic insert. Anyone can act like they are taking your measurements, but the question is – who is actually using these measurements. It can be very hard to determine who is selling you a ready-made product and who is really custom-fitting you, but your feet will know the difference. Mordechai Farkash, Director

A "Greener's" Guide to Adding Gloss

I

love living in Eretz Yisrael. I do. I get emotional when I think about how blessed I am be able to live and raise my family in this country.

But being a chutznik is tricky business - especially if you are a chutznik who just happens to be a parent of sabras. My children split their sides as they imitate my "raish" (or is it chaish?) around the dinner table, but for some strange reason they register an emotion akin to mortification when I ask for "ezcha" (help) in public. Humph.

Then there was the time that my son learned the letter "ay" as in "ashem" (being “G-d,” and not “guilty”) and "ayom" (being “today,” and not “terrible”). Poor little “hay,” cut down by the sabras......... (Did you catch my pun or are you just scratching your "ed"?!) And, if we're already talking Hebrew language, I cannot squander this forum and not shout out to my alltime favorite Hebrew (slang) verb: "l'barmetz." It takes FIVE English words to explain l'barmetz! Ten points for the Sabras. Clear. Concise. To the point. The challenges of a chutznik only begin with the language barrier. Attempting to acclimate (l'hitaklaim - another fabulous word, borrowed from English I presume) necessitates a thorough understanding of the sabra's cultural nuances and behaviors. A classic example that I encounter all the time in the building industry is how to define the size of an apartment. Find me a chutznik who hasn't found themselves in a "four room apartment" wondering where the fourth bedroom went? And, if we're categorizing apartments by the number of rooms, why stop with the salon and bedrooms? Why not include the kitchen as well? A three bedroom apartment should be “five rooms,” in my humble opinion, of course. I believe that the omission of the kitchen is indicative of how we intrinsically relate to our small apartment kitchens -- as a

utilitarian space whose function begins and ends with the preparation and consumption of food. But what if we could do simple things to change that? So many of us feel starved for living space. Maybe we can expand the purpose of our kitchens to include additional space that contributes to the ambiance of our homes, space where we look forward to spending time by ourselves and together with our families. Paint your walls a rich color. Between your cabinets, appliances, and backsplash, there isn't a great deal of open wall space. That means that painting won't be a huge expense and a bold color won't overwhelm the space the way it would in a different room. Paint your cabinets. You don't have to replace or even reface old and shabby down doors. Even laminate surfaces like formica can be painted. Place an indoor/outdoor rug. Indoor outdoor rugs are characterized by their toughness and their amazing stainfighting abilities. In the past, they offered little aesthetically, but nowadays they come in chic patterns and styles. They're great for the high traffic (and high spillage) locations. Lay down an oriental rug. Though they aren't quite as durable as an indoor-outdoor, they clean up easily with a little care. Oriental rugs are striking and can be very affordable. Hang mirrors. Mirrors add a wow factor to the kitchen because they're unexpected. And, as always, they amplify light and open up the space. Hang framed photos or artwork. Stay away from "kitchen-y" pieces. Add elegance and sophistication by choosing art that you'd feel comfortable hanging on the wall of any room. Invest time and effort in making your kitchen a place that draws you in, because, let's face it, we spend a great deal of time in there. I, for one, am just thankful that "mitbach" doesn't have a single "cheish."

Elsewhere in the world one often needs to travel literally hours before a change of scenery is apparent. In Eretz Yisrael a drive of only half an hour can transform brown desert dunes to plush green forestry, areas of arid subterranean heat to brisk snowy mountain tops, and dry below-sea-level valleys to invigorating waterfalls and streams.

S outhern Israel Each area of Israel has its own distinct color and geographical features with its own unique beauty. The country is replete with magnificent nature trails ranging from short excursions to full day serious hiking. In the northern Negev, the cliffs hanging over Ein Ovdat just north of Mitzpeh Ramon are absolutely breathtaking. The climb up the cliffs (down is off limits) affords one of the most outstanding views in the Negev. Further south, northwest of Eilat, is the beautiful Red Canyon. All red stone, the canyon is a windy, narrow, twisting pathway between two mountains- spectacular and beautiful. After a short (or long) hike in the lovely Judean Desert oasis of Ein Gedi one can pass under its revitalizing falls. Continuing south, it is a short drive to Massada where one can experience the cable car climb to reach the top or take an approximate fifty-minute climb in intense desert heat. (recommended only with an accompanying medic) The separate (free) beach in the Ein Bokek region has been newly remodeled by the municipality, affording a dip in the dead sea which is a real floating experience at the lowest point in the world. It is not recommended for chidren under the age of five as the salt content can be dangerous if the water enters the eyes.

JAN 18-30 Seminary daughter or Yeshiva bochur learning in Israel accompained by parents will receive a 50% discount on the group tour of your choice.

For those who are looking for a bit more rugged desert hike, scaling the walls of the Great Crater will be appealing. Beginning at the colored sand picnic area inside the crater, the hiking trail, called the "Big Fin", winds and twists to the top of the crater wall and then descends outside the crater deep into the valley.

Chavat Na'ama is a ranch founded by 'Buki', who spoke at the Agudah convention on his becoming a ba'al tshuva right before the onset of a shmittah year. He talks about his relying on the Rabbis advice for the shmittah year and how his sheep gave birth to 6 at a time. His crops grew well when other farmers experienced failure proving the reliance on the Torah was not only a truthful way, but the only way to earn successfully.

Jerusalem: Leonardo Plaza, Inbal, Prima Kings, Waldorf Astoria, and more North: Kinar, Lavi, Ner Etzion Dead Sea, Eilat....

One can hike to Grar from there, experience making pita or cheese as well as milk the sheep. These activities go over well with yeshiva or seminary students as much as children.
