sonia levy Whale Bone Rubbing One of the earliest forms of black tinting material known to man was made from the charred bone of animal remains found in their cooking fires. This pigment, so-called bone black, has been identified in prehistoric paintings and found in Egyptian, Greek and Roman art. It is found throughout European medieval and Renaissance art and later in both oil and watercolour paintings until modern times. The drawings are made by carefully pressing paper onto the surface of whale bone vertebrae. The paper is then coloured with charred whale bone black, so that projecting areas of the bone become dark, while indented areas remain white.

karl hugo schmoelz

alongside his general work, largely in commercial / advertising, Schmoelz worked with almost every architect involved in the rebuilding of Cologne. His extensive archive shows not only the vision of this mammoth task but also a photographic eye that continues to influence architectural photography to this day.

ivana tomljenovic meller

Before enrolling at the Bauhaus, Ivana Tomljenović, born in Zagreb in 1906, had already completed her studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in Zagreb, which she attended for four years starting in 1924. On graduating, she first went to the College of Applied Arts (Kunstgewerbeschule) in Vienna, but left it in 1929 to move to the Bauhaus in Dessau. Like all her fellow students, Tomljenović (often called ‘Koka’) attended the obligatory preliminary course given by Josef Albers. The following semester, she began to study photography in the newly founded course given by Berlin photographer Walter Peterhans. Her main interests were in poster design and photo processing.

grit kallin-fischer

Before moving to the Bauhaus in Dessau, Grit KallinFischer (nĂŠe Vries) had already studied painting with Karl Doerbecker in Marburg in 1911 and with Lovis Corinth at the Academy of Art in Leipzig from 1915 to 1917. After the First World War, Kallin-Fischer moved to Berlin and joined the local circles of artists there. She met the Russian emigrĂŠ and musician Marik Kallin and they were married in 1920. The couple moved to London together.
