Moon Men by Isabella Laird Andronos Saturated in magenta tones my collection of found photographic slides depicts iconic, ubiquitous images of the moon landing from 1969. An image of Buz Aldrin walking on the moon has become degraded, possibly through poor storage. This is very likely, considering the slide was found in a box on the side of the road. Framed in its plastic 35mm carrier, the image has faded out in the centre; the nitrate based medium cracked and chipped away. There is a sense of mystery associated with this perishing image. In the image, the figure of an astronaut can still be made out, but nature has intervened. The original context of the image was likely to have been as part of a school or learning institute, the image seen as a representation of a historical event; a proof, a document. With computers used to store and view images, this decay is something that will be seen less and less. The same image of Buz appears in Google images, untarnished, colour balanced, and complete. My work pursues these decomposing images as things to be looked at and valued, not to be discarded.
