PREFACE

Holidays and Celebrations Christmas comes but once a year, but fortunately there are plenty of other red-letter days for us to celebrate! Really memorable celebrations, though, require a certain amount of preparation. In addition to a slap-up meal, the table decoration is of course very important, as it helps put everyone in a festive mood. That way, even if the meal is delayed a little, the guests will still be busy admiring the scene you’ve set. But presents and invitation cards also have their place at every celebration. You’ll find all these things and much more in this special issue of inspiration, which will help make your next red-letter occasion a real cracker. Whether your best friend is getting married or there’s a baby on the way, we’ve given you several different options for finishing off these projects. Whether you go down the sophisticated or simple route, the effort you’ve put into creating these gifts will definitely not go unnoticed. All patterns are either illustrated in reduced scale in the magazine, or can be downloaded from our website. Once again, of course, we’ve also posted tips on our Internet blog – check them out at www.bernina.com / inspiration under News. And now get cracking! Your Editorial Team and Claudia Giesser, Editor-in-Chief

MOTHER’S DAY

Straight from the heart

S626 Vase covers Tulle and wash-away embroidery stabiliser make for transparency here. Cut out as many hearts as you wish and sandwich them between tulle or between thread remnants and self-adhesive wash-away embroidery stabiliser. Or just grab a felt strip and sew a chain of beads on top and tulle underneath.

 With CutWork S627 Scented sachet This sachet was created through pure chance. Our intention was merely to cut out the hearts with the CutWork Tool, and then we noticed that the remnant was also really pretty.

18

In need of a small, personal ‘quick fix’ for Mother’s Day – or even Valentine’s Day? We’ve got some sure-fire easy winners for you here.

S625 Series of pictures One or all three? These hearts are sure to remain on the wall long after the holiday’s been and gone. Have fun experimenting a little. The little heart in picture 3, for instance, was just a test piece – we were actually ready to bin it! The 3D - effects of the pictures are partly from batting (picture 1), and partly from crushing with special stabilisers (picture 3).

19

Midsommar

S630 Tea-light holder Four layers of transparent paper create a flowery effect here. These are a breeze to make with the BERNINA CutWork software, but with a bit more effort can also be cut out by hand.

20

In Scandinavia they celebrate ‘Midsommar’ – the longest day, or the shortest night, of the year. The idea appealed to us so much that we’ve come up with some projects that will help you join in the festivities.

S632 Insect-proof food covers Simple yet attractive. Here, we’ve hemmed a cheery striped fabric and decorated it with foam-rubber flowers. The fastening studs weigh down the edges slightly. The drinking straw is threaded through the eyelet in the centre and holds everything securely in place.

S630

 With CutWork S631 Flower chain A flower wreath makes for a festive mood at a party. We’ve opted here for a weatherproof variant, which will last you for many years. The flowers were embroidered on foam rubber with the CutWork Tool, then cut out immediately afterwards.

S633 Cutlery pocket Your guests will be able to tackle the cold buffet elegantly with these individual cutlery pockets. We’ve also decorated the edges with cutwork.
