This and that Often, it’s the little things that give us pleasure – whipping up something eye-catching from remnants, or coming across some amazing fabric by chance, and turning it into something new for little cost or effort. It’s something we always seem to find the time for, despite the hectic pace of modern life. You too can transform your old T-shirts, jeans, scarves and neckties into your new favourite accessories. All of these projects are quick to make. Alternatively, sew a summery basic garment in next to no time and without a complicated pattern, which, when worn with, say, some jewellery you’ve made yourself, underscores your own personal style. Make room in your home for little monsters! Not only will they thrill the children, but – judging by the relevant home and living magazines – they seem to be the latest adult fashion craze. Whether or not you go for the monsters, though, this issue is chock-full of ideas for refreshing your home environment for minimum effort and expense. Recycling – not just a fashion trend In the course of our research, we’ve stumbled time and again on the theme of recycling textiles into new projects. On closer examination, though, the new boom in recycling is much more than just a fashion trend. There is an almost effortless, sky’s-the-limit creativity sparked by the desire to give a new lease of life to clothes that have seen better days. “Transforming old into new” is the slogan that sums up this wholesome credo. This issue is jam-packed with ideas for recycling unwanted clothes and accessories, so that those ill-advised purchases and inability to part with old things will finally work out in your favour. Dig out your old neckties, jeans, tees and sweats, jumpers and scarves, and get cracking. Soon, you won’t recognise that old favourite item of clothing – and you’ll have become a role model of exemplary consumer behaviour, without even trying. A n e c k t ie a f fa ir Like everything else, necktie patterns and colours are subject to the dictates of fashion. They soon grow dated, and are spurned by the style-conscious man. Repurposed and recombined, though, they once again become coveted designer pieces. Now it’s her turn to give a new lease of life to these classy silk numbers!
S905 and S906 Mobile-phone cases Nicely padded and packed, your mobile is safely stored in a case fashioned from the tip of the tie. A button from your collection is strictly for decorative purposes, as hook-and-loop tape is much more practical for opening the case quickly. Or try it with a clip buckle, and wear the case on your necktie belt.
S907 Belt A tie like this is lovely and long, and far too nice to get the chop. We’ve pleated and sewn the excess length, creating a fashionable accessory in no time flat. This belt goes perfectly with simple, form-hugging dresses.
S908 Rug Those who can lay claim to an entire collection of ties can best give them a new lease of life by repurposing them into a rug. This handsome project will be the envy of all – particularly those of the male persuasion!

o f good ta st e Actually, the antiquated-sounding term “breeches” doesn’t quite cover these fashionable knee- or ankle-length trousers, which can (almost) be sewn without a pattern! There are almost as many trouser shapes as there are wearers, but for sheer comfort in leisurewear, sarong- and haremstyle trousers are hard to beat.
S920 Sarong trousers These wide wrap trousers are always sewn out of soft, flowing materials, like this colourful cotton fabric. Dispensing with a closure, they are held up only by the tie sewn onto the back.
S921 Short harem trousers Palazzo or harem trousers are actually extra-long, wide trousers with a narrow cuff at the ankle. We’ve chosen the short, summery version for you, which looks more like a skirt at first glance.
