SCOREBOARD JUCO WORLD SERIES

Playmakers Nats’ Strasburg to make debut June 8 HOUSTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg is finally ready. The Washington Nationals said after Monday’s 14-4 win over Houston their prized pitching prospect will make his major league debut against Pittsburgh on June 8 at Nationals Park. The 21-year-old righthander is first scheduled to start for Triple-A Syracuse at Buffalo Thursday. General manager Mike Rizzo told mlb.com Strasburg will throw six innings, or 95 pitches. Rizzo said he, pitching coordinator Spin Williams and pitching coach Steve McCatty mapped out a specific plan for Strasburg at spring training.

Duke beats Irish for lacrosse crown BALTIMORE (AP) — Duke won its first NCAA men’s lacrosse championship in dramatic fashion, defeating Notre Dame 6-5 Monday on a goal by C.J. Costabile with five seconds gone in sudden-death overtime.

Phillies activate Lidge ATLANTA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies activated right-handed closer Brad Lidge Monday from the disabled list after he missed 18 games because of elbow stiffness.

Conway to be out at least 3 months INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — IndyCar driver Mike Conway will miss at least three months with back and leg injuries from his frightening crash in the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. Conway had surgery for multiple fractures in his lower left leg and has been diagnosed with a compression fracture in his back. The back injury was not confirmed until Monday morning.

TRITONS Continued from Page B1 await the winner of tonight’s other winners bracket contest between Western Oklahoma State and LSU Eunice at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Avery Point will play defending national champion Parkland (Ill.) in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. today. Tritons starting pitcher Joey Flattery picked up the victory, allowing only two hits and one earned run in six innings. He reached only the mid80s on the radar gun, but it was good enough to strike out seven hitters. Only once did Avery Point manage to get a base runner past first. The Tritons’ David Borchardt scored three runs and drove home two more. Nine-hole hitter Eric Swain smacked a two-run single in the second to give Iowa Central a three-run cushion. Avery Point starting pitcher Donatello took the loss. He walked seven batters and scattered six hits in 52⁄3 innings.

SOONERS Continued from Page B1 Last year, OU lost two 11-run decisions to an Arkansas team that eventually reached the College World Series. “I’ve already told my guys, I don’t want you thinking about last year,” Golloway said. “I’ve been involved in 15 NCAA tournaments and one thing I can say, you control what you can control and the rest of it is out of your control.” Oral Roberts blew out South Dakota State, who shared the Summit League regular season title with the Golden Eagles, 21-6 and 12-2 in the conference tournament. ORU’s run of 13 straight NCAA appearances is the fourth-longest in Division I, behind Miami (38), California State-Fullerton (19) and Rice (16). Oral Roberts takes a team ERA of 5.97 into

the regional, but the Golden Eagles have played well at times this season, even recording a 3-2 win at Texas, considered one of the nation’s three best teams. “Unfortunately, all of our injuries have been to pitchers,” Walton said. “With all of our injuries and what we’ve had to go through, we feel fortunate to be in the (NCAA) tournament.” California is in the NCAA field for the second time in three seasons under coach David Esquer. The Golden Bears are one of eight Pacific-10 Conference teams in the tournament. “Making a regional was something I felt our team deserved,” Esquer said. “And having eight teams selected from the Pac-10 shows the respect I think our conference deserves.

This year’s team is one of the youngest teams I have ever fielded, but it is the hardest-working team I have ever fielded.” North Carolina finished as the national runner-up in 2006 and 2007 and has been to the College World Series the past four seasons. But this season the Tar Heels made the NCAA field despite not qualifying for the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. “We have not had that as a criteria, and we have not suggested to the membership that they have to make a conference tournament,” said NCAA baseball committee chairman Tim Weiser. “I think in North Carolina’s case, the argument can be made that they had a very good season.” Wichita State, which lost to Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament

finals Saturday, did not receive a bid to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001. Arizona State (47-8) was the No. 1 overall national seed, followed by Texas (46-11), Florida (42-15), Coastal Carolina (51-7), Virginia (47-11), UCLA (43-13), Louisville (48-12) and Georgia Tech (45-13). Florida International’s Garrett Wittels will carry a 54-game hitting streak into the Coral Gables, Fla., regional and an opening-round matchup against Texas A&M. Wittels is four games shy of matching Robin Ventura’s Division I record of 58 consecutive games with at least one hit, set in 1987 for Oklahoma State. The Sooners tournament games can be heard on KGWA Radio (960 AM).
