PAYBACK Continued from Page B1 Eunice’s ballclub is made up exclusively of Louisiana players. Much of Western’s ballclub consists of players from Latin America, making this a matchup of the Cajuns against the Caribbeans. The Pioneers will be without a key player. Randolph Oduber, who leads the nation with 26 homers, is sidelined after having an emergency appendectomy on Friday. The Bengals advanced to tonight’s game with an 11-2 run-rule victory over Paradise Valley (Ariz.) College on Monday. Eunice right-hander Chance Mistric, a 25-year-old Marine Corps veteran pitching on Memorial Day, was impressive in six innings of work. Mistric allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts to improve to 12-1 this season. Mistric is 27-1 in the

past two years. After knocking out 17 hits in a 16-5 win over defending national champion Parkland on Saturday, the Bengals run-ruled the Pumas, exploding for six runs in the first inning. Gabe Thibodeaux hit a home run and finished with two hits and two RBI. Jordan Bourque had three singles and two RBI. Eldred Barnett and Ryan Broussard also knocked in two runs for the Bengals. Paradise Valley, the seventh-ranked team in the country, got a pair of pinch-hit homers off Mistric in the sixth inning on solo blasts from Payden Yarmer and Justin Winters. The Pumas (41-20) play an elimination game today against Madison.

center in the bottom of the seventh inning to put Parkland on top 9-8. A sacrifice fly by Robert Glover and an RBI single by T.J. McManus gave the Cobras some insurance runs. The victory sends fourth-ranked Parkland (50-12) into another elimination game today. Frederick ended its season with a 53-7 record. Frederick took the lead in the top of the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Tim Leather and a two-run double by Mike Hnatuck. The rally put the Cougars on top 8-7. But Parkland rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good. Kiermaier finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI. For the tournament, the left-handed swinger is 7-for-13 with 11 RBI and two home runs. McManus, Justin Parr and Brandon Stevens each had three hits for the Cobras. Parkland’s Ricky Neuman got the final two outs in the seventh inning and was the pitcher of record. Kyle Zegarac struck out the last two batters in the ninth inning to pick up the save.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Albert Pujols continued his torrid hitting, rookie Jaime Garcia overcame a shaky start and the St. Louis Cardinals knocked out Bronson Arroyo in the fifth inning of a 12-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, forging a firstplace tie in the NL Central. Pujols extended his streak of reaching base to nine straight plate appearances with two intentional walks and a single his first three times up. He finally made an out in the fifth inning, hitting into a double play. Pujols added an RBI single in a five-run sixth, one day after hitting three homers at Chicago.

PARIS (AP) — Needing one point for an upset win over Justine Henin at the French Open, Sam Stosur wavered, hitting a doublefault. The Australian took a deep breath and tried again. This time she launched a confident serve into the corner, setting her up for an overhead slam to seal the biggest victory of her career. Stosur sidelined Henin 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth round Monday, ending the four-time French Open champion’s streak of 24 consecutive victories at Roland Garros. Stosur’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be topranked Serena Williams, who beat Shahar Peer 6-2, 6-2. “Obviously beating Justine is going to give me lot and lots of confidence,” said Stosur, seeded No. 7. “It’s a great achievement for me, but it’s not over yet. I’m just in the quarters and going to play the No. 1 player in the world next.” Another four-time champion, Rafael Nadal, advanced by beating No. 24-seeded Thomaz Bellucci 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. Nadal, who lost in the fourth round in 2009, has yet to drop a set this year and will next play fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, seeded 19th. No. 3-seeded Novak Djokovic eliminated Robby Ginepri, the last American in the men’s draw, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. No. 4 Jelena Jankovic and unseeded Yaroslava Shvedova won in straight sets and will meet in the quarterfinals. Henin’s defeat was her first in the tourna-

ment since 2004. She was seeded 22nd playing at Roland Garros for the first time since ending a 20-month retirement. “I just wanted so much that the adventure could keep going,” she said. But after taking a 4-3 lead in the final set against Stosur, Henin showed signs of nerves and was betrayed by her elegant backhand. Serving at 4-all, the Belgian double-faulted to reach break point, then yanked a backhand wide. In the final game she pushed three backhands into the net, including a potential putaway on the first point. “My nerves were simply not strong enough today,” said Henin, forced to play for a fifth consecutive day because of weather interruptions. “I felt very nervous, very upset, which is normally not the way I am.’’

DAILY CROSSWORD

By Chris Dell Staff Writer

Defending champion Parkland (lll.) survived a 90-minute relay delay and a wild Lenoir (N.C.) rally to beat Lancers 11-8 in a National Junior College Division World Series game that ran into Monday morning. Lenoir scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth to turn a 7-0 deficit into a 87 lead, only to see Parkland score four runs in the top of the seventh to remain alive. Kevin Kiermaier’s threerun homer was the big blow in the Parkland ninth. It was preceded by a walk to Tyler Watts, a sacrifice by Collin DeDecker and a walk to Ryan Widos. Kiermaier was 4-for-5 for the day with four RBI. Parkland reliever Ryan Copley held the Lancers scoreless in the ninth. Parkland starter Darin Worman was working on a shutout until the eighth when Lenoir came back with a flash of long ball. Cody Richards’ two-RBI triple brought in the first two runs. He scored on a two-out double by Jay Thompson. Two walks loaded the bases. An error scored another run, setting up a three-RBI triple by Clayton Daniels that gave Lenoir an 8-7 lead. Daniels had four hits for the Lancers, who finished their season at 34-15.
