How Might the Wisest Man in the World Address Society? With the proliferation of talk shows and the Internet, there are far too many resources that provide advice. How do you distinguish what advice is appropriate for you when different gurus provide conflicting suggestions? With that said, it's not hard to understand why so many people are confused and continue to make poor decisions. Over the past decade, I've had the privilege of speaking with and receiving advice from a gentleman who may be considered the wisest on the planet. While he sees the greatness in all people, his advice confronts what has not worked, thus far. I've heard him discuss some of the toughest issues faced by human beings and provide

In times past, people would gather around elders to hear what they had to say. Elders where held in high esteem. Today, each generation disengages from the wisdom of elders. If we could bring back the days when wise sages influenced decisions, perhaps we could bring a greater sense of order to society. At least we may have less tension from rapid changes. Because the elders have witnessed recognizable patterns over decades, they possess insight that can only happen after living a very long life.
entered an age where people are left on their own. As a result, each of us wanders on a different path in isolation, even though we are surrounded by millions. For example, for thousands of years, marriage was arranged or heavily influenced by one's parents. Their wisdom to know about your potential mate and his or her family was infinitely more insightful than yours. Now we reject input from our parents, and therefore, have to figure it out on our own. What's worse is there are no classes to help us figure out what we want in a mate and what is required to attract and build a great relationship with that person.
This one aspect of life is critical. Why? The choice of a significant other is the most important decision you will make in your life. End of An Era Chattanooga State president Dr. Jim Catanzaro never seemed like the type to back down from a fight. So it came as quite a surprise when he announced his resignation last week. Catanzaro has been under fire since his controversial hiring of Chief Innovations Officer Lisa Haynes back in August. The Chatt State president met Haynes while he was vacationing in Barbados and was… obviously impressed… …To say that Haynes’ hiring was “fast tracked” would be a gross understatement. On August 8, Chatt State partnered with the University of the West Indies (in Barbados) for a student and faculty exchange program. On August 21, the community college handled paperwork to get Haynes a work visa so she could manage that program, under the
also been under fire for his exorbitant spending practices. Catanzaro receives a $190,000 per year salary, along with a college-provided car, a housing allowance and a cell phone allowance. He also racked up $23,376 in travel expenses for the 2013-14 fiscal year, more than double the amount spent by presidents at the state’s biggest community colleges. (Ms. Haynes accompanied him on six of his seven major trips since her hiring.) Catanzaro’s $10,000 tab for business meals was the highest among the state’s community college presidents…

…Chattanooga State’s faculty and staff were indignant at the rather shady recruiting and hiring of Ms. Haynes. The faculty Senate and the full-time faculty both registered votes of “no confidence” on Catanzaro’s leadership and sent a letters triggering investigations by the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office. The TBR’s full board meeting is slated for December 11, which perhaps explains the timing of Catanzaro’s resignation...
…There’s no doubt that Chatt State saw tremendous growth during Catanzaro’s 24 years as president. He opened the school’s Health Science Center and developed partnerships with Volkswagen, Wacker and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Under his reign, the campus has been greatly expanded. New buildings have been built. Athletic facilities have been upgraded. Through it all, however, there were always rumors of discord between Catanzaro and the Chatt State faculty. His mishandling of the Haynes matter gave those disgruntled academics all the ammunition they needed to put the pressure on the man some called “Captain Zero.” In the end, did Catanzaro give in to those pressuring him to resign… or did he just decide to punch out before he was forced out? We’ll never know. But it’s the end of an era on Amnicola Highway…

days later, Catanzaro sent Haynes a formal offer for the newly-created $90,000 per year job. (She was later promoted to the Chief Innovations Officer position and got a raise up to $108,000 per year.) Haynes didn’t even have a degree or a validated transcript at the time of her hiring…

Dear Rocco, I recently came into a little money. It was enough for me not to have any more financial concerns. Here’s the trouble – most of my friends, as much as I love them, are deadbeats and never-do-wells. I didn’t plan it that way, but circumstances put me with these people. I’m the only one it seems to ever held a regular job, pay my bills, etc. Over the years I have been asked for all sorts of favors – everything from small loans to rides to a place to crash. At the same time, while my friends are deadbeats, for the most part, they are a lot of fun to hang around with and usually are good for a
laugh or two. I’m afraid now that I’ve come into this money that some of these clowns will be showing up at my doorstep with a vengeance. If you were in my shoes what would you do? Should I seek out new friends, move, or start handing out cash like lifesavers? DB

CINCINNATI (UPI) - Officials at the Cincinnati Zoo said a pack of Grinchy squirrels are countering their holiday cheer by taking down their festive lights. Chad Yelton of the Cincinnati Zoo said squirrels gnaw on the LED light strands workers put up for the holiday season and the animals seem intent on keeping the facility’s Bear Hill from being bathed in festive illumination. “This is by far the number one spot for
squirrels,” Yelton said of Bear Hill. “We’ve had many a night where it’s completely dark.” Yelton said the zoo lost 300 strands of lights in one recent year, “and most of that was on Bear Hill.” Officials said the squirrel problem has been going on for several years. Before the switch to LED lights, the squirrels would unscrew the incandescent bulbs, apparently mistaking them for nuts. Yelton said the zoo tried using hot sauce to deter the squirrels, but “they kind of

The Bath Bus Company is running the Bio-Bus on the 20-mile A4 route between Bath, England, and the airport in Bristol, England. OAK LAWN, IL. - You have to give this guy a few points for creativity, but subtract about 200 for smarts. To be fair, Jorge Navarro Jr. of Oak Lawn, IL was in a sticky situation none of us want to be in. The 23-year-old was pulled over by police around 2:40 a.m. Sunday for a traffic stop. Maybe he couldn’t afford the ticket, or maybe he was nervous about something else, like the open alcohol container he had in his vehicle, but for whatever reason he struck upon a daring but moronic plan. Right in the middle of the traffic stop, court records state that Navarro called 911 and said he heard eight gunshots and that a man had been shot and was lying on the ground a few blocks south of his loca-
tion. “Several officers drove to the scene with their emergency lights on,” according to court records. When questioned, Navarro said he had phoned in the fake shooting to get out of the traffic violations. Despite the distraction, Navarro received tickets for illegal transportation of an open alcohol container, speeding, no seat belt, driving without lights and improper lane usage, plus a felony charge for making the bogus 911 call. SALEKHARD, Russia (UPI) — Santa’s crew may soon be presented with a job opportunity during the off-season. Officials in northwest Siberia said police could soon be deputizing reindeer to help chase down criminals in the region. Irina Pimkina of the Yamalo-Nenets region’s Interior Ministry said police in the area, which is located in Russia’s Arctic tundra, often find themselves at a disadvantage when chasing down local criminals, who often employ reindeer as getaway rides. “Of course we have snowmobiles in service, but one should understand that a machine is a machine,” Pimkina told the Izvestia newspaper. “A snowmobile can break down or get stuck in the tundra, but the deer will run at all times.” The deer would join the animal ranks of about 150 donkeys and mules

employed by the Russian Defense Ministry to serve in mountain brigades. The legislation governing the animals also allows for reindeer to be used for lawenforcement purposes. Police in neighboring Finland have been using reindeer in recent years to patrol forests in Lapland. SHANDONG, China (UPI) - Brave fathers-to-be are getting shocking lessons at a pioneering Chinese hospital in what it feels like for women to give birth. A nurse in the free lesson at Hangzhou Aima maternity hospital in China’s Shandong province sends an electric current to a pad placed above the abdomen. Over five minutes, the strength of the current is increased, causing men to “writhe in agony,” according to witnesses. One man compared the pain to feeling as if his “heart and lungs were being ripped out.” Organizers hope the experience will make men more sensitive to their partners while they labor. It’s an unusual exercise in a nation where men often don’t attend the birth of their children. Hospital administrators emphasis that there’s no lasting damage to men, and also note that there’s no real comparison between the “pain experience camp” and women’s suffering during the much longer-lasting agony of childbirth. Some men couldn’t

hack it and bailed out mid-shock. “I thought giving birth to a baby was something natural, something really normal that women could get through,” one nearlydad told the BBC. “After this I realized it’s not easy giving birth. It’s just painful.” MASHANTUCKET, CT. - When you watched the slavering jaws of your friends and family indiscriminately plowing through your carefully prepared Thanksgiving meal, consider yourself lucky you didn’t have competitive eater Joey Chestnut as a dinner guest. He just won a turkey-eating contest in Connecticut, setting a record by devouring an entire bird. Ten contestants vied to see who could eat the most of a 20pound turkey in a competition at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Chestnut ate 9.35 pounds of meat off the bone in 10 minutes. According to Major League Eating he bested the previous record, which was held by Sonya Thomas, who ate 5.25 pounds of turkey in November 2011. Chestnut, a San Jose, California, resident who just turned 31, is ranked the top competitive eater in the world. He took home a $5,000 check after stuffing his face with turkey. The remainder of the $10,000 purse was divided among other contestants.

DECEMBER 4 & 7
STEVE MINGOLA
WITH STEVE’S ARSENAL OF CHARACTERS, VOICES AND TOPICS, HE OFTEN CRACKS HIMSELF UP DURING HIS SHOW. GROWING UP IN NEW YORK AND THEN MOVING TO TEXAS, BEING ONLY HALF ITALIAN, YOUNGER SISTERS, DOGS, BELT DADS AND SMOKING ARE ONLY SOME OF THE TOPICS COVERED. HIS ACT HAS UNIVERSAL APPEAL BECAUSE EVERYBODY CAN RELATE TO SOMETHING.
DECEMBER 5 & 6
JAMES GREGORY
JAMES DOES NOT “TIP-TOE” THROUGH LIFE AS IF HE’S WALKING ON BROKEN GLASS OR EGG SHELLS. THAT STYLE IS EVIDENT ON STAGE AS WELL. HE IS NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT. MUCH OF HIS HUMOR IS CENTERED ON BRILLIANT OBSERVATIONS OF CRAZY RELATIVES AND PEOPLE OBSESSED WITH THE SLIGHTEST CHANGE IN WEATHER CONDITIONS - NOW REFERRED TO AS GLOBAL WARMING. HE DELIGHTS IN POKING FUN AT MODERN SENSITIVE PARENTS AND OUTOF-CONTROL ENVIRONMENTALISTS. GREGORY HAS BEEN QUOTED AS SAYING, “IF YOU WANT ME TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT ENDANGERED SPECIES, YOU NEED TO CONVINCE ME THAT WE’RE ABOUT OUT OF CHICKENS.”
DECEMBER 8

Birds of Prey Julio Jones obviously read my article this week. After crucifying Jones last week in my recap of the Atlanta Falcons last second loss to Cleveland last week where I broke down the number of dropped passes the 2011 sixth overall pick has had the last six weeks. It wasn’t pretty. Well, Jones answered my criticism Sunday by having a career day against the Arizona Cardinals at the Georgia Dome. Coming into the game the Cardinals were the NFC’s best team – at least record-wise. They left the state of Georgia Sunday evening licking their wounds as Jones put on a pass catching clinic.
The Atlanta Falcons gave up 18 points on Sunday. The Atlanta defense did not give up a touchdown until there was 1:05 left in the game. The Cardinals’ first touchdown came on a pick six of Matt Ryan in the second quarter by Rashad Johnson returning the interception 88 yards. The one touchdown the defense did allow was a

Julio Jones led everyone Sunday catching ten Matt Ryan throws for a career best 189 yards and one touchdown. Late in the fourth quarter as Atlanta was driving for their last score Jones caught a Ryan pass along the left sideline and ran out of bounds literally stopping right in front of me. We locked eyes and he gave me that look of “I read what you had to say. Check me out now.” Indeed I did. Who else can I give grief on the Falcons so they’ll exceed? Despite all this smack talk the Falcons dominated the Cardinals 29-18 on both offense and defense. Yes, you read that correctly – defense.

big game. It was pretty much a must win to stay in the hunt, and we just knew we had to perform. It was a good team, so we could not be out there halfstepping, so we showed up and we have to keep it going,” said Falcon’s defensive tackle Corey Peters. The defense was bolstered by the return of veteran safety William Moore who’s missed a majority of the season but made his presence felt. “I felt good, and it was great to be back playing with the team. This is my job, and I love playing and competing, and I was itching to get back on the field,” he said. To add insult to injury for the Cardinals Steven Jackson has his bet day running the ball as a Falcon. For the first time since he donned the red and black of the Falcons Jackson rushed for over 100 yards – 101 to be exact. A majority of that came on the first series when he broke free and ran 56 yards down to the Arizona one. “Just another day at the office. It’s something that I wanted, but they didn’t bring me here for one. I need to be more consistent, and that’s what I strive to do. We’re going into the month of December where the games are going to be more challenging. We’ve set the bar now and now we need to do it consistently,” said Jackson.
count on you to get a field goal, I just go out there and do it. Everything keeps working out, so I just go out there and keep on banging them through,” said Bryant. “I thought we had a very good performance in all three phases of the game. There were some excellent plays made, and when you make those types of plays you’re going to get the outcome that you want. I think we did an outstanding job in our preparation. I thought our coaching staff was spot on in putting the game plan together. Defensively, I thought we were flying around (and) we took the ball away on most opportunities that we had. It was good to get the running game going. That’s a very good football team that we played, and I thought that we matched them for their level of physicality and intensity. We’re going to enjoy this for about four or five hours, and then move on to the Green Bay Packers,” said Falcons coach Mike Smith.
Matt Ryan, who looked more comfortable under center than in recent weeks found Levine Toilolo four plays later for the score. Later in the quarter Ryan found Jones from 32 yards out for another score. For the day Ryan completed 30-of-41 passes for 361 yards, two scores and the one interception.
And for the first time all season the Falcons outscored their opponent in the second half. They did not give up any points in the second half until 1:05 was remaining on a Stanton to Stepfan Taylor three-yard scoring pass. Atlanta managed three field goals in the second half using the running game to ENIGMA

Cowboys Basted By Eagles The Dallas Cowboys were in a giving mood on Thanksgiving Day as they graciously allowed the Philadelphia Eagles offense and defense to carve them up for a delicious 33-10 victory and sole possession of their division. The Eagles feasted on Cowboy miscues, an unexplained collapse of what had been a formidable Dallas offensive line, poor play calling, a porous defense and just about every conceivable calamity you could think of. DeMarco Murray was throttled by a stifling Philly defense that held him to 73 yards on 20 carries. The worst pass defense
in the league held the Cowboys vaunted receiving corps – Dez Bryant, Jason Witten and Terrance Williams – to a combined total of seven catches for 119 yards. For the first time all season, the NFL’s leading rusher was held to below 4 yards per carry. His counterpart, and the NFL’s second leading rusher, the Eagles LeSean McCoy, had a spectacular afternoon. He carried the ball 25 times for 159 yards and one spectacular touchdown run. Eagles Coach Chip Kelly has transformed Philly into a quick strike offense that does not like to waste any time when they ENIGMA
have the ball. That philosophy was in full throttle on their first two drives, that not surprising, led to two touchdowns. The Philadelphia leads the NFL in first quarter efficiency by outscoring their opponents 8531. Quarterback Mark Sanchez took over the offense three weeks ago when started Nick Foles cracked his left collarbone in a game against the Houston Texans. He was expected to be ready for the playoffs if Philadelphia makes it that far. Judging from the team’s dominating performance against their division rivals, who were 6-1 on Turkey Day with Romo as QB, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Electing to receive the ball after winning the coin toss, a rejuvenated Sanchez quarterbacked the team down the field with sufficient ease. Sparked by a running game that featured McCoy and the Eagles’ other triple-threat option, Darren Sproles, it took the team just three minutes to race 80 yards to the end zone were Sanchez elected to take the ball himself the final three yards for the score. The Cowboys, who up to this point had become a well-oiled machine when it came to their own opening drives, looked like they would return the scoring
favor. Unfortunately, the offense sputtered and punted the ball to the Philly 12 after a promising start. On second and 20, Sanchez found a hole in the Dallas secondary were he threw a perfect strike to receiver Jeremy Maclin he was virtually standing alone. He caught the tight spiral and proceeded to race 59 yards downfield to the Dallas 29. Two plays later, tight end Jordan Matthews hauled in a picture perfect pass strike from Sanchez for a 27-yard touchdown. It had only taken Philadelphia two minutes to cover the 88 yards.
was puzzling to say the least. A lot of that has to do with offensive coordinator Scott Lineham. When Romo’s favorite target, All-Pro tight end Jason Witten, only has one reception the entire game, something is severely amiss. Add the frustration that Bryant and Williams had to deal with getting their hands on the ball against the worst secondary in the NFL, and you have severe dysfunction permeating the entire offense. Though the Cowboy defense has able to shut down the Philly The lack of performance by this Express to just 10 points in the formidable offensive machine second half, the 23 they surrenThe Cowboys, sensing the game slipping away in the first quarter, finally mounted a significant assault on the Philadelphia defense. With Murray driving the ball on the ground, it gave Romo time to find Dez Bryant for a 38-yard reception. It led to the Dallas tailback’s easy 1-yard plunge that cut the score in half. Unfortunately, the four-minute second quarter drive would be the final glimpse for fans of the real Dallas offense before it lapsed into a comedy of errors.

dered before the end of the first half was the real tale of the tape in this game. Whether or not this game was a fluke will be determined Dec. 14 when the Cowboys visit Lincoln Financial Field to face the Eagles one last time to determine the fate of the NFC East. MUSIC MIDTOWN Before there was Coachella or Bonnaroo there was Music Midtown. Music Midtown is the pioneer of the modern multi-day music and arts festival. The festival launchedin 1994 mixing current artists of multiple genres on multiple stages as well as classic music acts and quirky one-hit wonders to offer any music fan something to look forward to. Over the years the festival introduced the city of Atlanta and the entire south bands such as Cracker, Collective Soul, Interpol, Lou Reed, Black Eyed Peas, Tom Petty and hundreds more. The tradition continued this year as well as the festival deviated slightly from their traditional format to include more Top 40 acts such as Iggy Azalea, Lorde, Lana Del Ray and Eminem as well as appeasing older music fans with the likes of Gregg Allman and Run DMC.
