1961 A group of teens from Hawthorne California calling themselves The Pendletones recorded three songs for Hite and Dorinda Morgan, who ran a publishing business and two small record labels. One of those songs was called “Surfin’”, which, when pressed on to a Candix Records 45 rpm disc, was credited to The Beach Boys, a name made up by promotion man Russ Reagan, who had taken it upon himself to rechristen the band. “Surfin’” would get to #75 on the Billboard chart and sold 50,000 copies, launching the career of one of America’s most successful Rock ‘n’ Roll acts.

Just days after recording what would be her biggest hit, 27 year old Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose at Hollywood’s Landmark Hotel . “Me and Bobby McGee” would reach number one in early 1971, her highest chart success since “Piece Of My Heart” with Big Brother And The Holding Company in 1968.

1971 Rod Stewart enjoyed a two sided, US number one record with “Maggie May / “Reason To Believe”. Although Maggie May was not her real name, the song was co-written by Stewart about the first woman he had sex with. Rod later revealed that he was surprised by the song’s success, saying, “I still can’t see how the single is such a big hit. It has no melody.” Rolling Stone magazine seemed to disagree when, in 2004, they ranked the song #131 on their list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
1975 39-year-old Al Jackson, drummer for Booker T. And The MGs, is shot and killed by a burglar at his home. His wife was questioned about the killing because she was arrested in July for shooting her husband in the chest during a domestic dispute. He wasn’t badly hurt and the charges were dismissed when his wife claimed self-defense. On October 1st, Jackson returned home to what police describe as a botched robbery attempt. According to Jackson’s wife, an intruder made her answer the door and then threw her husband to the floor demanding money. Jackson was forced to lie face down and then was shot in the back five times. The identity of the culprit remains a mystery.

the Hot 100 in November and top the chart just before Christmas. 1976 David Bowie begins a three-year hiatus from music by moving to West Berlin in an attempt to resolve some personal problems. John Belushi joins Joe Cocker on Saturday Night Live during the performance of “Feeling Alright”. Belushi performs his exaggeratedly spastic imitation of Cocker and the crowd goes wild. After the show, Cocker says he’s happy with Belushi’s impression of him. Rick Dees And His Cast of Idiots receive a Gold record for one of the more bizarre novelty hits of the decade, “Disco Duck”. In December, it will become only the fourth single ever to be certified Platinum. Dees was fired from his broadcasting job at WMPS in Memphis, Tennessee, when he mentioned that his song, “Disco Duck”, was almost #1, and that his own radio station would not let him play it. He was soon hired by a rival Memphis station and went on to a highly successful radio career, being inducted into both the National Radio Hall of Fame, and the National Association of Broadcasters Hall Of Fame. 1977 Gene Simmons receives a Platinum record for his solo LP, one of four released concurrently by the members of KISS. Simmons’ charts the highest in the US, reaching #22. 1978 Exile achieved their only number one song on Billboard’s Pop chart with “Kiss You All Over”, a #6 hit in the UK. After a couple of other minor hits the band would switch styles and went on to top the US Country And Western chart in 1984 with “Woke Up In Love”. The members of Aerosmith bailed thirty fans out of jail after they had been arrested for smoking pot during an Aerosmith concert at the Fort Wayne Coliseum. 1982 Sony Corporation introduces
the first commercially available compact disc player in Tokyo, Japan. The price of the unit is about $650 US. Albums that have been converted to CD are slow to reach the North American market and the first to go on sale is Billy Joel’s “52nd Street”. “Jack and Diane” by John Cougar led the Billboard singles chart, while his earlier release, “Hurts So Good” was still at number ten. Peter Gabriel and Steve Hacket join their former band mates in Genesis for a one-time benefit performance at The Bowl in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England to help raise money for Gabriel’s WOMAD project (World of Music, Arts and Dance). 1990 Two separate lawsuits are combined on appeal against CBS Records and Ozzy Osbourne by the parents of 17 year old Harold Hamilton and 16 year old Michael Waller, both of whom are alleged to have committed suicide after listening to Osbourne’s “Suicide Solution”. The Supreme Court would refuse to reinstate the case. A California court had already dismissed a separate suit in 1988, ruling that suicide was not a foreseeable result of Osbourne’s song. 1992 Sinead O’Connor did her career some major damage when she appeared on US TV’s Saturday Night Live and held up an 8” x 10” color photo of Pope John Paul II, ripped it into pieces and said, “Fight the real enemy.” Over the next few days the NBC switchboard in New York received thousands of calls denouncing O’Connor’s performance. The network and the show’s executive producer, Lorne Michaels, both denied any knowledge of O’Connor’s plan and said she had performed the song differently in rehearsal. Catholic groups expressed outrage at the act and called it patently offensive to people of all religious beliefs. NBC has never again aired the O’Connor performance. 1996

Van Halen announces that former Extreme lead singer Gary Cherone was chosen as the new lead singer of the group, replacing Sammy Hagar. 1999 Roger Daltrey announced that The Who were reforming, making their first performance in Las Vegas. The show was also being planned to be broadcast live on the internet. 2000 Benjamin Orr, bassist / vocalist for The Cars lost his fight with pancreatic cancer at the age of 53. Orr sang lead vocals on some of the band’s most recognizable hits, such as “Just What I Needed”, “Bye Bye Love”, “Drive” and “Let’s Go”. 2002 Barry White’s record label, Def Jam Island Music Group, issued a statement that said the 58year-old singer was battling kidney failure brought on by years of high blood pressure. White “has started a course of maintenance dialysis therapy. Once stabilized, he will be a candidate for a kidney transplant.” Sadly, White, who placed eleven songs on the Billboard Top 40 between 1973 and 1994, would suffer a stroke and die on July 4, 2003. 2010 Just a year after ruling out a reunion with his former group, singer Davy Jones announced plans to reform The Monkees for a 2011 tour. 2011 Starship’s “We Built This City” was named ‘The worst song of the 1980s’ in a poll by Rolling Stone magazine. “The Final Countdown” by the Swedish band Europe came in second and “Lady in Red” by Chris de Burgh was third. Also making the top five were Wham!’s “Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go)” and “The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats. 2013 Cher achieved her highest charting solo album ever when “Closer To The Truth” reached #3 in America. The only time she placed a record higher was in 1965 when she and Sonny

Bono reached #2 with “Look At Us”, an LP that featured the hit single “I Got You Babe”. 2015 Carlos Santana became the latest victim of an Internet death hoax, which said that he had passed away at the age of 68. In fact, one of his representatives confirmed that the Rock icon was alive and well. 2017 Tom Petty, who achieved sixteen Billboard Top 40 hits between 1978 and 1995, died following multisystem organ failure at the age of 66. Three of his songs, “Don’t Do Me Like That” (#10), “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” (#3) (with Stevie Nicks) and “Free Fallin’” (#7) reached the Top 10. 2020 Eddie Van Halen, who established himself as one of the alltime greatest guitar players in Rock history as a member of the group Van Halen, died after a long battle with cancer. He was 65. Reggae artist Johnny Nash died of natural causes at the age of 80. Between 1958 and 1973, Nash placed six songs on the Billboard Top 40 chart, including the number one hit, “I Can See Clearly Now” in 1972.

A 58-year-old Canadian strongman broke a Guinness World Record in New York by pulling a 33,400-pound bus 16 feet by using his upper body. Kevin Fast pulled a 40-foot, all-electric Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus on West 67th Street in Manhattan to break the record for heaviest vehicle pulled using only the upper body. Fast broke his own record from 2017, when he pulled a 24,427-pound truck in Cobourg, Ontario. “We are excited to be part of a historic Guinness World Records attempt to pull the heaviest vehicle by the upper body, and congratulate Kevin Fast on his exciting achievement,” Frank Annicaro, acting president at the MTA Bus Company and senior vice president at New York City Transit’s Department of Buses, said in a statement.
Organizers of a world record attempt in Chicago said they are hoping to gather more than 178 canine couples to break the record for the world’s largest dog wedding ceremony. Leslie Allison-Seei, chair of the Villa Park Community Focus on Unifying Neighbors Commission, or F.U.N., said she previously participated in a November 2008 attempt at the record in Oak Park, Ill. The attempt featured 87 canine couples, falling short of the record-setting number of 178, which was set in Littleton, Colo., in 2007. Allison-Seei said she wants to see Illinois take the record Saturday at Lions Park in the town of Villa Park. Villa Park Village President Nick Cuzzone is slated to officiate at the dog wedding ceremony, which Allison-Seei said will include canines from across the Chicago metropolitan area.
