Falcons Hold On Winning Isn’t Aways Pretty Sunday morning as I left to make them. I don’t even think I had to to eat (one of the perks of covering the trip to the Georgia Dome this pay to park because no one was the NFL). There were maybe seven weird feeling came over me. I had been there before I thought. The freeway was clear and I got into my parking spot with no traffic. Déjà vu. I thought I was back in the year 2000. That was my first season covering the Atlanta Falcons and while their preseason was impressive and opening home game was a win (against the 49ers) nothing else that season was impressive. It was Christmas Eve, the last game of the season. It was cold, much like today. The Falcons had fallen to 312 going into their last game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Being my first year covering the team I still wasn’t sure of the surroundings as I am today such as the best and safest places to park. My usual game day routine was arriving at the Georgia Dome two hours before kickoff. This particular Sunday I was running late and this week my press box guy, Eric opted to go home to Sevierville to be with his family at Christmas, so I was going solo. I got a late start and I drove my old diesel Benz as fast as it would go (which wasn’t very since it was not a turbo model). I literally pulled into a vacant lot less than a block from the entrance to the Dome 15 minutes before kickoff running into absolutely no traffic. Atlanta, the Georgia Dome and even where all the tailgaters usually congregate were not there – at least most of
photographers at the game. The one historic fact of this last game of the 2000 I recall was that it was now Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon’s last game as a pro. He was the Chief’s second-string quarterback. The Falcons won the game relatively easily and the crowd chanted “Moon!” but the Chief’s coach Gunther Cunningham did not appease the fan base by letting Moon take a couple of token last snaps. He valiantly jogged off the field after the loss helmet in hand and off to better things. Now back to Sunday. As I got off the interstate and headed to my parking lot I saw no traffic. I got into my parking space in a lot ? empty. I wondered if maybe this game had been cancelled. Two 310 teams – the Falcons and the Washington Redskins were facing off. Last year it was a big deal – not this year.
A lot of media was there for two teams that have won a combined six games. The Redskins had stolen everyone’s thunder by benching Heisman winner and number two overall pick Robert Griffin III in favor of Kirk Cousins. That and coach Mike Shanahan’s drama surrounding his job (Will he leave for Houston? Will he be fired? What’s his relationship with monitoring the lot. photographers counting myself RGIII?) So an inordinate amount of that showed up for this game press was there. I jogged though my entrance with between two teams with nothing to still time to spare. I ducked into play for. On any given Sunday When all was said and done the the lunchroom to grab a quick bite there are usually a couple dozen

My, what a difference a year makes.
Falcons held on for a somewhat exciting 27-26 win over the Redskins. The Redskins scored in the waning seconds of the game and instead of kicking the extra point to tie the game and send it to overtime they went for two. The pass was deflected in the back of the end zone to preserve the win. A wild rugby-esque onside kick on the next play where everyone seemed to be playing hot potato before the Falcons finally recovered sealed the victory and an audible sigh of relief was heard from the Dome crowd.

Ironically a year ago (2012 season) this game would have been called one for the ages. There were multiple lead changes clutch passes and big runs, quarterbacks sacks and a last second conversion fail to conserve a win for the home team. Instead people are talking about Cousins breakthrough day that was ruined by the batted away pass in For all intents and purposes the the back of the end zone on the game Sunday was a slop-fest. For the day Cousins completed 29 passes just like Ryan except he threw for 381 yards and three touchdowns. Cousins found Fred Davis from 23 yards out and Pierre Garcon from 53 yards out as Washington took the lead going into the half. that’s this, or that’s another milestone. I guess that’s what happens when you get old, when you’re playing as long as I am, but I’ll take it. It’s been such a great ride for me. I love competing. I loved playing for the Chiefs. I love playing for the Falcons. The fans have been great. It’s just awesome to be around a group of guys like this. I’m soaking it up. I’m enjoying it,” said Gonzalez. WHY AMERICANS ARE FAILING WHEN IT COMES TO SAVING FOR RETIREMENT The typical 401(k) participant now pays over 8 % of their yearly earnings towards retirement savings via their strategy and social safety tax obligations, making it among the biggest expenditures for families. As HelloWallet discovered, retired life preparedness continues to be stubbornly reduced: the common employee near retirement has approximately 2 years of substitute earnings conserved, or around 15 years shy of the average post-retirement life expectancy.

While United States business spend $118 billion yearly in 401(k) retirement plans for their workers, and saving for retirement is now among the biggest family expenditures, HelloWallet's brand-new study recommends that these financial investments are not creating the desired end results. Oftentimes, much better alternative monetary assistance could possibly supply workers with the expertise needed to creep out of their personal debt and gradually improve their saving for retirement.
The research, which examined customer finance information from the Federal Reserve and the U.S. Census Bureau, highlights the requirement for retirement plan administrators to offer individuals with alternative, independent economic advice. to save for a secure retirement. During 2010 and 2011, over 60 % of workers increased their personal debt at a faster rate than they saved for retirement. What the study did not go into is "why is personal debt increasing faster than retirement savings?" It could be that we are seeing a decline in household income. Afterall the labor participation rate has been declining since the financial crisis of 2008. It is entirely possible that households are making up for the decline income with an increase in personal debt. As long as this trend continues the prospects of a secure retirement will remain elusive to many Americans.

The Heisman Trophy Loses Its Luster The hoopla was noticeably understated this past weekend as Florida State redshirt freshman Jameis Winston was awarded the Heisman Trophy at New York’s Downtown Athletic Club. Winston won by the seventh-largest margin of any Heisman winner with 2,205 points, but 13 percent of voters left him off of their ballots completely. (More on that later.) Florida’s 2nd Judicial Circuit failed to press charges against Winston, but his accuser’s attorney held a press conference on Friday (the day before the Heisman award ceremony) criticizing the Tallahassee Police Department’s investigation into the case and calling for additional inquiries by the Florida Attorney General and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. After five hours Tao finally had enough and demanded to go home. Eyewitnesses say he could be heard saying they already had more bags than they could carry, but she insisted on going into one more shop where the was a special offer on shoes. An eyewitness said: “He told her she already had enough shoes, more shoes that she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more. “She started shouting at him accusing him of being a skinflint and of spoiling Christmas, it was a really heated argument.” The shouting match ended when the man threw the bags on the floor and jumped over the balcony, smashing into Christmas decorations on his way down before hitting the floor seven stories below causing shocked shoppers to flee in panic. Singer Jimmie Rodgers required brain surgery after he suffered a fractured skull and a broken wrist, allegedly at the hands of three San Diego police officers. Although he hadn’t had a hit record in ten years, he enjoyed a string of Top Ten songs in the 1950s, including, “Honeycomb”, “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine”, “Oh-Oh I’m Falling in Love Again”, and “Are You Really Mine”. Rodgers would recover and return to performing a little over a year later. “Lookin’ Out My Back Door”, “Travelin’ Band”, “Bad Moon Rising” and “Up around the Bend”. The LPs were “Cosmo’s Factory”, “Willy and the Poor Boys”, “Green River”, “Bayou Country” and “Creedence Clearwater Revival”. Elton John’s first US hit, “Your Song” enters the Billboard Hot 100, where it will reach number eight. An excellent version of the tune had already been recorded by Three Dog Night for their “It Ain’t Easy” album, but it wasn’t issued as a single. Elvis Presley’s stretch limousine pulled up outside the White House in Washington, D.C. One of his guards handed over a letter from Elvis addressed to President Nixon requesting a meeting to discuss how the King of Rock and Roll could help Nixon fight drugs - including getting credentials as a “federal agent at large.” About two hours later, Elvis walked into the Oval Office wearing a flamboyant outfit, oversize sunglasses and two huge medallions. He gives Nixon a chrome-plated Colt .45 while the President agreed to give him a Narcotics Bureau badge - but only after learning that the chief of the narcotics bureau had turned down the same request earlier that day and told Presley the only person who could overrule his decision was the President. At Elvis’ request, the meeting remained secret for more than a year until The Washington Post broke the story on January 27th, 1972. 11997711 “I Gotcha” by Joe Tex is released by Dial Records. The song’s theme about a distant father and son relationship was suggested to Harry by his wife, after he expressed disappointment about being on tour instead of attending his son’s birth. 11997755 The Bay City Rollers earn a Gold record for their first US single, “Saturday Night”. The case was decided in Selle’s favor, but the verdict was overturned a few months later.
Elvis Costello appears on NBC-TV’s Saturday Night Live, where producer Lorne Michaels refuses to allow him to perform “Radio, Radio” because of the song’s criticism of the broadcasting industry. He was never invited back. 11997799 Elvis Presley’s personal physician, George Nichopoulos, was charged with ‘illegally and indiscriminately’ prescribing over 12,000 tablets of uppers, downers, and pain killers for the Rock and Roll star during the 20 months preceding his untimely death. 11998866 The Doobie Brothers reunite for a benefit in Palo Alto, California. The performance inspires a reunion tour the next year and leads to one last Billboard Top Ten hit, 1989’s “The Doctor”. A California Superior Court Judge refuses to reinstate a lawsuit brought against Ozzy Osbourne by the parents of a teenager who committed suicide while listening to Osbourne’s “Suicide Solution”. The judge ruled that Ozzy is protected by The First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which gives him the right to freedom of speech.

Backstreet Boys Bring Holiday Cheer to Jingle Jam The Backstreet Boys spread some Christmas cheer Monday night as they headlined Atlanta radio station’s Star 94’s Jingle Jam at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Celebrating their 20 years in style with a new album and a documentary coming out next year it was a show I’m glad I witnessed and because of my rock and roll snobbery ashamedly admit I knew a few I’ve never been a fan of “boy of the songs they were singing and bands” or their fans. This was enjoyed the ones I didn’t. actually my first show to see of a “boy band”. I must admit I enjoyed The Goo Goo Dolls played before myself and had a good time. I BSB and put on a strong let. I think I get it. I witnessed choreo- noticed the veteran acts at the graphed dance steps and the five Jingle Jam played wisely to the members switching out lead vocals crowd and despite some having – all taking their time in the spot- new material, opted to play the hits light – and deservedly so. Pop to the adoring and colorful crowd. music is just that – it’s something Johnny Rzeznik complete with to be enjoyed while it lasts. large acoustic guitar played the big There’s no need for deep thoughts hits like “Name, “Ride” and “Iris”. or meaning in the music, it’s all Bassist Robby about having fun. I had fun, the Takac was all over the stage and in thousands of screaming fans many ways is a co-frontman of the around me were having fun, and band with heart throb Rzeznik. most obviously the Backstreet Boys were having fun onstage. The Fray is now a veteran band. I remember seeing them in 2003. My I guess they should be called the pal Brad Passons opened for him. hold a crowd. They could. Issac Slade is one hell of a front man. He ventured off the stage during The Fray’s set and climbed into the audience and sang in the middle of the crowd standing on a chair pumping his fists. There was a lot of energy coming from Slade who I equated prior to the show to being somewhat sedated from a majority of their songs I knew, but it’s Christmas and he brought the cheer to the packed house. Avril Lavigne who was onstage before The Fray has been undergoing a bit of an identity crisis. The former “pop princess” has tried to grow up and shake some of her punk tendencies, dressing more maturely instead of the tank tops and neckties she was known for when she broke out in 2002. Of course the results of that have been mixed. Her first three albums had tons of radio airplay, not so much her fourth album. “Goodbye Lullaby” that was pretty much pure pop. The jury is still out on her newest that dropped last month, “Avril Lavigne”. She looked to be in her old – punk rock form Monday. Wearing an oversized black t-shirt, leopard print leggings and combat boots, she stomped around the stage in pure pop punk fashion. She started her set with a new song and then went to the old favorites, “Girlfriend” and “Sk8er Boi” that sent the house rocking. Her attitude was back and her set rocked. Pop musician/vocalist Colbie Caillat had the unenviable task of opening the show. Caillat’s vocals were strong and a little mellow especially for what followed but a worthy opener.
