Good Riddance 2015 …When one looks back on 2015, there were two big news stories that made it such a crappy year for Chattanooga. The first one ended our sense of security and linked our city with others that have suffered the horror of mass shootings. It also put Chattanooga on a still-short list of communities that have been the victim of domestic terrorism. The second major news event knocked one of Chattanooga’s most treasured business success stories off of its pedestal and left its future in doubt… As the year grinds to a close, on Chattanooga and I really I have to say that I’ll be glad hope that 2016 holds some to be rid of 2015. This past good news for our city… year has been pretty rough

…On July 16, 2015, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez brought mass murder and domestic terrorism to our city. Abdulazeez opened fire on two local military installations. He committed a drive-by shooting at the military recruiting center on Lee Highway, then sped to the U.S. Naval Reserve Center on Amnicola Highway. Once there, he resumed shooting and killed four Marines on the spot. A Navy sailor, a Marine recruiter, and a police officer were wounded. The sailor died two days later. Abdulazeez was shot and killed at the reserve cen-

ter… …There wasn’t a lot of news about the July 16 shootings in the months following the event. Finally, in December, Federal Bureau of Investigation director James B. Corney said the Chattanooga attacks were “motivated by foreign terrorist organization propaganda.” Neither the FBI nor any of the other investigating agencies have indicated that Abdulazeez was under orders from ISIS, Al Qaeda, or any other terrorist organization. It seems most likely that he was a troubled young man with serious drug problems who latched onto violent Islamic ideology and “selfradicalized.” Regardless, Chattanooga lost its illusions

Volkswagen is at an all-time low. A lot of Chattanoogans are pissed off at VW for cheating, but still hope the company can rally and save itself… …Two news stories. Totally unrelated. Either, individually, would have dealt a huge blow to Chattanooga. Together, the horrific shootings on July 16 and that EPA announcement on September 18 were like a wicked onetwo combination of punches that left our community dazed. So let’s bid a not-sofond farewell to 2015 and hope 2016 brings us a couple of big, positive news stories…

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Police in Michigan said a 13-year-old boy loaded his 8-year-old sister into a car and took her on a joyride that ended with a police chase. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy investigating a report of a black Nissan Altima driving erratically Saturday night spotted the vehicle stopped at a red light about 11:30 p.m. in Clinton Township. The deputy turned on his lights, and the car pulled over, but it sped off after a few seconds and made it a short distance before the driver lost control, and

owner of a New Zealand restaurant said a man who stole a tip jar containing $6.77 forgot to take his food, which he had already purchased for $9.82. Security camera footage posted to Facebook by Nando’s Riccarton restaurant in Christchurch shows the man putting the tip jar which contained about $6.77 — 10 in New Zealand dollars — in his bag. The suspect was confronted by owner Yateen Lallu after the man spent a few moments in the bathroom before the empty tip jar was discovered on the restroom floor. “I said to him ‘there’s our tip jar’, and he said ‘it wasn’t me, it must have been someone else’. I said ‘are you CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand - The sure? Are you telling the truth?’ the car spun out across the grassy median and into the eastbound lanes of Metropolitan Parkway. Two children, identified as the 13year-old driver and his 8-year-old sister, then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Deputies chased down the children with help from Clinton Township police and determined the boy had been driving with the girl in the front passenger’s seat. The girl was released to her mother, while the boy, who police said they knew from previous incidents, was detained at the Macomb Juvenile Justice Center. Police said the car belonged to the girlfriend of the children’s father.

And he told me to check his bag and check the security cameras and I started to doubt myself,” Lallu told Stuff.co.nz. He said the man fled while he was reviewing security footage. Lallu said the man’s crime didn’t turn any profit — he had already paid $9.82, 14.50 New Zealand dollars, for a meal that he left behind. “So it wasn’t worth it, he had a bad day. It was not good karma for the poor bloke,” Lallu said. Police said they are looking into whether the man in the CCTV footage is the same man caught on camera in November stealing security cam-

Frank’s Place A great dive bar. Good, cheap drinks and cold beer – what a deal!

Frank had been the Southern Manager for Featherlite Trailers and traveled all over the south. When it came time to retire he moved to Daytona. He liked the Daytona area having worked closely with Featherlite on NASCAR. We were very close in age.

I’m talking about Frank’s Place – Ormond By-the-Sea about two miles north of Daytona Beach city line on Highway A1A. From the road it doesn’t look like much – in a strip mall anchored by a Dollar General Store. It is another one of my favorite watering holes on our monthly trip to Daytona.

Annett had been in the bar and restaurant business for several years at the time she met Frank. She had just recovered from a terrible auto crash, having been crashed into by a drunk driver. The Lord was with her and she made a great recovery.

Frank’s owned by my two good friends it’s namesake Frank and his lovely partner Annette. They have live entertainment three or four nights a week and never a cover charge. They also feed their customers for free on Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays.

Annette became Frank’s partner about two years ago and with her help and talent the place really blossomed. When you are in the Daytona area do yourself a favor and stop by Frank’s (soon to be world famous) Place – you’ll be glad you did. Tell him I sent you.

ment of his house. The house was surreal. It looked like something out of the Brady Bunch complete with shag carpeting and even a framed print that I swear looked like a velvet painting.

Of course I am talking about Scott Weiland, former lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots and a few other side projects as I prefer to call them who was found dead on his tour bus the first week of December.

We moved all our gear downstairs. And as we were getting settled in all of a sudden this loud heavy metal music started coming out from behind the door next to the den. The door flew open and there was this young guy with long red hair and he held his arms over his head and yelled, “White Zombie rules!” It was Kyle, our partner’s son, who was a teenager and apparently very popular. He once had a birthday party at the house and invited me and said there was going to be 600 people

there. I laughed and when I showed up there indeed were at least 600 people there overflowing in and around the house. Fortunately our office door was locked. He asked us if we liked White Zombie too. Pat, Mike and I looked at each other in bewilderment. Kyle cranked up White Zombie louder and went back into his room. One night while I was working late I heard this song that was part hard rock and part grunge and I took an immediate liking. It turned out to be the song “Sex Type Thing” the song that broke STP. I’m not sure what I liked about the song but it was different to what was being played on the radio at the time. Grunge was in now and while I liked – or was forced to like it, it really wasn’t my thing. STP separated themselves from the short-lived yet still loved genre.

stolen (which in turn had recently replaced the other one that was stolen). I asked my buddy Dave who was working with me at the time and he suggested I get a car stereo with a removable chassis so I could literally take the radio out of the car when at the office. He graciously installed it for me and when we got through I went to buy a new CD to play in my first ever CD player in my car (now obviously obsolete). As soon as I walked into the store there it was – Stone Tempe Pilots new album, Purple. STP has the honor (?) of being the first band I played on CD in my car.

Purple was and still is incredible with one hit song after another. The band was garnering more and more fans and fans that you might not think would be fans of the band. and they were all over the radio again. While the album did not chart quite as high as Tiny Music… Gifts from the Vatican Gift Shop they were once again critic’s darlings. Their sound kind of mellowed as well on this album as Weiland was allowed to display his melodic voice better. The big single off of this album was “Sour Girl” that was a throwback to ‘60s rock and Weiland and the band pulled it off to perfection. Like I told you earlier I loved his voice – something I don’t admit about many a male rock singer.

He was.

It wasn’t long that news broke about Weiland having chemical dependency problems – both alcohol and a garden variety of drugs. That usually goes with the territory for those in the entertainment community. He was busted a couple of times in interesting situations and then the third album came out and STP was no longer a critic’s darling. It was obvious that his addiction problems were having an effect on the band. There was maybe one or two songs on that album that made it I got to cover the band on this tour to radio unlike the first two. and while backstage I once again The band kept on. initial) as the Meat Puppets were playing their one big hit. But truth be told, I was there for STP. And I wasn’t disappointed. It was a great show. I pretty much knew most of the songs they played ad could sing along (it was loud enough so no one could hear me sing) and the stage set was really unique. There were two huge lava lamps on each side of the stage. Weiland got up on this riser front center singing and lasers shot out of the lamps onto is body. As he wailed away standing straight he held his arms out straight from his side with his head tilted back. It looked a bit like a crucifixion. Then they had an acoustic set and the stage resembled someone’s den with a couch and recliner. During this set they performed “Big Empty” and a few other of their songs acoustically. What really turned me on to Weiland at this time was the “hidden” track on Purple. A long, long time ago when the CD was industry

standard often artists would put a hidden track or two on their CDs. It was the musical equivalent of finding that toy that used to come in your cereal box for you babyboomers. Hell, a hidden track is what actually led to Todd Snider’s mainstream popularity back in the day. The hidden track on Purple was not a rock song. It was more in the style of a Frank Sinatra song as Weiland sung about this being the end of the album with lush orchestration. His rich baritone voice was perfect and it was then I realized he could really sing, thus adding my appreciation to his music and the band. I however remember reading the liner notes of the album reading the lyrics of the songs. They were handwritten and I was surprised (or should I have been?) how many words were misspelled by Weiland. Ironically I wondered if he was on drugs or something. ENIGMA

running and jumping around the stage as I’ve never seen before. He jumped atop the monitors on stage crouching down singing into the microphone and then would jump off and run to the other side of the stage. The crowd went wild. I felt uncomfortable. Looking into his eyes I thought to myself, he’s on something”. It wasn’t long after that the news hit again. There were a couple of occasional arrests and jail itme.

the front man. There is only one DLR and there is only one Scott Weiland. Both front men share a lot of qualities with a flamboyant stage presence and a charisma that can’t be described. Bennington looked uncomfortable on stage in place of Weiland. I was offered the opportunity to cover STP with Chester Bennington last year but respectfully rejected it. Although I was curious to see how it sounded I did not want to tarnish my memories of Weiland fronting the band.

At times the band seemed to be in limbo because of Weiland’s issues. I overlooked them because of my infatuation with his singing and quite frankly a lot of the songs the band had that became part of the soundtrack of my life at time. I covered Stone Temple Pilots one last time in 2002 Weiland looked more normal this time sporting bleach blonde hair. It was a great night. I had a great time. The band seemed more mature as they toured in support of a fifth album. Not long after this tour Weiland was kicked out of the band because of his transgressions. He then joined supergroup Velvet Revolver along with former Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagen and Matt Sorum as well as Dave Kushner in the hard rock/metal genre. The band was good but the music wasn’t as good as STP in my humble opinion. After Weiland’s dismissal from STP the band retired but then reformed with the DeLeo brothers sharing vocals to a lukewarm response. Velvet Revolver continued to thrive even winning a Grammy for best hard rock performance. Around 2008 the DeLeo brothers extended an invitation to Weiland to rejoin the band. He accepted the invitation and was soon dismissed from Velvet Revolver. The band reunited and toured to packed houses and recorded a sixth album that got good reviews but no radio singles. A few years back a concert promoter friend of

A couple of months back news broke that Bennington had left STP. I was hoping another Van Halen moment was going to happen with Weiland rejoining the band the way David Lee Rith rejoined VH until that fateful morning I woke up on December 4. Scott Weiland was found dead in his tour bus the night before.

mine wanted to know if I wanted to bring STP to town. I was offered the band for $90,000. I called a couple of friends of mine who were considering at one point being concert promoters themselves. However they turned out to be only tire kickers and I had to turn down the offer as much as I regretted it.

for Bennington and Linkin Park, he’s no Scott Weiland. STP with Bennington was the modern day equivalent of Van Halen with Sammy Hagar. As much as I liked a lot of Hagar’s solo work he was no David Lee Roth and I quit listening to Van Halen with Haggar as

It wasn’t long after that that Weiland was once again kicked out of the band because of tensions between Weiland and the rest of the band. I was unhappy as I did not get to see the band with Weiland again. A year later they announced they had picked up Chester Bennington as lead singer. Bennington was also lead singer of Linkin Park who opened for STP back in 2001. I’m sorry but despite my respect ENIGMA

I kind of figured this was going to happen. This script was written a long time ago. People with the kind of addiction problems that Weiland have rarely live to a ripe old age, especially if they are in the entertainment field. I sure do miss him already and I regret not seeing him on tour with the Wildabouts. And I hope the DeLeo brothers take this prompt to retire STP once and for all because without Scott Weiland there really is no Stone Temple Pilots.

Christmas Cards From the Edge I started to do this month’s Let me back up approximatearticle as basically a rant ly thirty years. I met my friend about people being all about Cathy as a rookie patrol offithemselves doing things like cer while working for the texting while driving, buying gifts for themselves while they Christmas shop, taking selfies etc. However, I decided it is Christmas time (yes I am using the correct name for this time of year not “The Holidays” or whatever politically correct term somebody prefers over “Christmas” so I decided to do an article more in line with what most people view Christmas time as; a time for peace , love, giving and time with family and friends. The other day I finally willed myself to writing a letter to a person I did not know or had ever met. I had been putting off writing this letter since January. I knew when I wrote them that it would be a moment of sorrow and would cause me to grieve. However I also knew it had to be done and would help bring catharsis to me.

she would wrap my girlfriend’s Christmas presents as try as I might I could never master the art of gift wrapping. Cathy eventually met a guy and got married. I was in the wedding. Her husband and two dogs lived with me in my one bedroom apartment for a few months when her husband was between jobs. That was a bit cramped to say the least but looking back it was fun. We stayed in touch but after several years Cathy moved away. She eventually divorced and was living alone with her dogs.

Although I had not seen my friend Cathy for many years she sent me a Christmas card every year for approximately 18 years. After she moved away years ago I had not seen her since. One year the card had her phone number so we occasionally talked by phone but every Christmas I got a card from her. That is up until Christmas of 2013. I had sent her a card but did not receive one from her that year. I called Cathy who explained that due to her developing cancer she had not gotten around to her yearly Christmas cards. I foolishly convinced myself that of course her cancer would go into remission and she would be fine. I spoke to her a couple of times on the phone and once when she was in town mentioned getting together. She said she was leaving that evening so it did not happen. That was I believe in July. Christmas 2014 came and went and although I had sent Cathy a card I had not received one in turn. I put off calling her. I think I already knew the reason but would not face it.

However, I will honor Cathy’s memory every year. Although I had never done so about five years ago I began sending Christmas cards to my friends and relatives mostly due to Cathy’s influence. I remembered over the years always smiling when I got her card and enjoying any Christmas cards I received. After I got the letter I vowed to always send my Christmas cards. In January of 2015 I went to the mailbox and saw a letter with a return address in unfamiliar handwriting. The return address was from a name I did not know and was from TenMile Tennessee where Cathy was living. My heart fell and I knew immediately what this letter was going to say. I opened it and sadly read the news that my friend of many years had passed away in August with this friend and Cathy’s mother at her bedside. Pop is more just what goes on the radio now. Pop music has been a band we’ve listened to all along. A lot of the music I played with the Nocturnals would be considered more risky and rustic sounding. It is also wrapped around music that was on top of the charts at the time. Here we are – Janis Joplin, The Band, Little Feat, The Rolling Stones. They were at the top of the charts. Music has had so many more decades to absorb multiple sounds, multiple cultures and multiple styles and it has become this cauldron - a melting pot everywhere and it consumes you if you try to play by the rules. For me music is definitely something I’m not trying for. I’m saying I’m not wanting to go out there and be Katy Perry. I don’t want to play to backing tracks every night and have 14 costume changes – although I love costume changes – don’t get me wrong. What I really want is to be a part of that conversation. I want to acknowledge what is at the top of the charts now all human beings are listening to now as they were listening to in 1973. So how do you continue to have that conversation? It’s not just about being relevant or what

spent ten years touring around and playing the jam band circuit. It was wonderful because everywhere I went and every place I went I had friends. I had a community there that I became a part of. It took a long time. I started playing out there in a parking lot. I didn’t get onto the main stage until more recently. And it’s often at these festivals that I’m by myself. The camaraderie – the family for sure. It’s a hugely powerful experience to share – kind of like if you’ve ever been to summer camp or sports camp of any kind where everyone is there for the same reason. Everyone is honing their skills and working every day. And there’s that big adrenalin lift moment in the might be it a performance after dinner around a fire or a soccer or football game, figure skating – whatever it is. It’s conversation, camaraderie and then the adrenalin rush of that glory. I really love my band. There are people who are new in my world that have just blown me away with their relationship, friendliness and kindness – and you can’t buy that, you know. So I’m glad I came out of the perspective of keeping it real because even my more pop record, the integrity and joy of the community of touring is really why I got into it. It’s an incredibly inspiring experience.

I’m a songwriter!” For many years I knew what the Nocturnal’s style was like and the only real shift when writing this record was I took away that piece of the puzzle. I need a separate entity from all others and I don’t want to push anything away. I want everything possible to happen in this life and doing so you do lose a few people along the way.

“What I really want is to be a part of that conversation.” Yeah. Everything changed – in my life musically, professionally it was an unbelievable upheaval for my record. I never really had that as an adult. I just managed to be cozy in my own little world but then when I did the same thing I always do, most of that energy would start me writing and the music took me in a new direction. I brought the music to the band and they did not like it. They were very confused, kind of like, “What the hell are you doing? That’s not the Noccturnals. That’s not going to sound like us.” So it was a scary moment and it was also one of those moments when you come to a crossroads. Do I care more about keeping everyone comfortable or am I going to make this as true as it was the day I wrote the song? Am I going to be true to the muse or other people? That happens a lot when I write songs. It’s hard. I write all the songs for the Nocturnals and that was another thing – the cowriting, writing with the band and having four people in the

Oh gosh, I haven’t thought about it much. I felt like this year every day has been a new year. (both laugh) It’s been an unbelievable fun year. There’s definitely so much change. My goal in the new year will be to try to round this tour out and survive it without going completely insane because that’s what’s been going on. It’s really fun and I’ve kind of unleashed a part of me that I’ve never shown on stage before. It’s amazing, but definitely unpredictable. The shows have been really wild and different from one to another. And that dynamic is so great of a performance to that audience, I’ve got to make sure I’m not killing myself. I’m not made of the same stuff I was. I’m not a 13year-old Gumby. (laughs) I’ll try to do more yoga and try to tune the instrument that is my body, my heart and soul. “Superman” Meets His Kryptonite as Dolphins Pop the Cork Yet Again Hey Mercury, crack open that bubbly we’re still the only perfect team in NFL history. Yes, it’s true, I am a life-long Miami Dolphins fan dating back before the perfect season in fact. The Dolphins have always been my favorite AFC team while the Atlanta Falcons, my first love before color TV has always been my favorite NFC team. Yes, I was there during the Norm Van Brocklin days and even both nightmarish Marion Campbell eras. Sunday my Falcons helped out my other favorite team as they did something no other NFL team has done this season. They defeated the previously unbeaten and hated (especially by me) Carolina Panthers 20-13 at a rocking Georgia Dome. I would also like to take the time right now to let out a big raspberry to all the sports radio talking heads who have given the Dolphins hell the past couple of weeks including one of my favorites Jay Mohr who were hoping to once and for all shut up the ’72 Dolphins. Two words – suck it. The ’72 Dolphins are the greatest NFL team ever and continue to stand the test of time. But I guess it’s only appropriate since no one took them seriously in ’72. Despite a perfect record they were underdogs in the AFC Championship game against the Steelers and three point underdogs against the Washington Redskins’ “Over the Hill Gang” in the Super Bowl. Sure, they may of had the “No Name Defense” but I’m pretty sure I can still name them without googling it. (Yep, I’m that big a fan) And I will argue with you until we are both blue in the face as to why Bob Griese is the greatest quarterback in NF history.

It looked like it was going to be a One of the sweetest parts of the game for me was the fact Roddy White was used more. White had five catches for 67 yards that was 27 more yards than Carolina’s top receiver Greg Olsen who caught four passes for 40 yards. White’s catches were clutch mostly coming on third down moving the changes. It looks like White is being transitioned into a possession receiver and he excelled Sunday. Of course playing the Panthers can do that to a guy, especially a cagey veteran like Roddy. Even the running game made big plays with Devonta Freeman running for 73 yards and picking up yards in big chunks when needed also helping move the chains.

keep hope alive and get even with a team that had scored over 70 points against them the last two meetings combined. Cam Newton finally met his kryptonite in Vic Beasley who had the best game of his rookie campaign always seeming to be nipping at the QB’s heels. Research authenticated the music and determined it was from a sketchbook dating to 1810 and used by the composer for brainstorming. It’s unclear what happened to the sketchbook after BBeeeetthh oovvee nn’’ ss death in 1827. It was sold in portions, with fragments turning up. RRyyaann says finding a complete sheet is rare. It was purchased by a German antiques dealer. It’s unclear how the page found its way to the Greenwich home.
