These institutions, in turn, worked closely with the brokers whose actions helped to protect the value of their collateral. One of the largest taxi fleet owners, Evgeny "Gene" Freidman, recently said in an interview that the city should guarantee taxi medallion loans as financial institutions tighten credit. He argued that the taxi industry is too big to fail. (2) Despite his arguments, however, foreclosing on medallions need not actually lead to a taxi shortage on the streets of New York City. In fact, it almost certainly will not. No matter who holds the medallions, they will be leased to drivers who want to make a living behind the wheel of a yellow cab, while other drivers will still hack for boro taxis, Uber and other competitors. The entire medallion system is a travesty that never should have existed in the first place. The system has worked to enrich insiders at the expense of the very people it was originally supposed to protect: the cab drivers who spend long hours behind the wheel. Today's drivers don't have the opportunity my father-in-law had to save their money and purchase their own medallions at a price that makes economic sense considering what they earn driving the car. Recent prices were rational only on the theory that medallions could only appreciate in value. Now that theory has been soundly disproven. The city and its taxi industry face the prospect of trying to undo this historical mistake with as little damage as possible to the financial institutions and other participants who bought into the idea that the old ways of doing taxi business would never change. That idea was as misguided in La Guardia's time as it is in ours.

MONEY MANAGEMENT

SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR THE LONG TERM IN STOCK MARKET INVESTMENT Getting started in stock market investment can be daunting enough, but staying in the game for the long term should be your main goal. You want to make a profit from your trading, am I right? Thought so. Staying alive in the world of investment and trading requires you to be flexible. That means you must be able to spring back from the setbacks along the way. It's just a fact of trading that you will lose trades. You simply cannot win every single trade you enter. It's just the way

the markets are. And you must deal with those losses in your mind. It can affect your emotions when you lose something, so dealing with that in the right way is important. Now let's go over some ways you can learn to stay in the game and make those profits.

age risk well. After all, money saved is money earned and if you can avoid a big loss somehow then that's great. In trading I use stop loss orders that will get me out if a trade goes wrong. I strongly suggest you use stops in all your trading especially if you are new to it.

Keeping stress levels under control Keeping your cool is the way to go in stock market investing, and that means learning how to manage your stress levels. The way to do it is to learn to man-

trading decisions. SS ttiicc kk ttoo tthh ee SS yysstteem m If you are like me and use technical analysis as the main tool for your trading decisions its likely you are using a system of some sort. You know the type that lets you know when to enter and exit the market. For those systems to work you must stick to it. That means controlling your emotions and not entering or exiting the market on a hunch or even a news item. Most technical analysis systems have a high enough rate of losing trades that means you'll have to ride them out and be patient. You may only win two or three trades out of ten but you'll make your money back plus a profit.

As a trader you should always be keeping track of your position. Knowing where you stand is always a good idea. You should always be evaluating your position in each trade you have open. This way you will be well equipped to make wise investment decisions. For instance you may have reached a point in a trend where you will want to move your stop loss to reduce risk further. Pachyderm Gumbo I’ve whipped up my “gumbo” columns on various topics for a long time now. “Political Gumbo” and “Sports Gumbo” are frequent submissions where I mix several ideas under a general category into a spicy stew of content. “Pachyderm Gumbo” will include several snippets concerning the Grand Old Party. (“Pachyderms” being elephants, the Republicans’ long-time symbol.) This the first gumbo batch that I can imagine as an actual soup, perhaps being consumed by Anthony Bourdain or Andrew Zimmern. Without further delay, here we go… …The recent gathering of potential GOP presidential candidates in New Hampshire was a chaotic cattle-call. Nineteen total candidates and potential candidates showed up for an event sponsored by the state’s Republican

party. Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, (The) Donald Trump, Chris Christie, Rand Paul, and Scott Walker were among the hopefuls in Nashua. As I described last week, the Republicans spent a lot of time discussing (mostly slamming) Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton. Several of the potential nominees poked fun at Ms. Clinton for stopping at Chipotle while on a campaign trip to Iowa. (For those of you unfamiliar with Chipotle, it is a fast-casual chain of Tex-Mex restaurants not unlike Moe’s or Mojo Burrito.) When a reporter asked Bush if he had ever eaten at a Chipotle, the former Florida governor (whose father and brother both got elected president) had a quick retort: “I get pretty good Mexican food at home.” Jeb’s wife, Columba, was born in Leon, Mexico…

…Gay marriage will be a litmus test question for those seeking the GOP nomination. One New Hampshire reporter asked several of the presidential hopefuls if they would attend a gay wedding if one of their friends or relatives invited them to theirs. The answers were... predictably... just painfully awkward. Anything other than strict opposition to gay marriage is a dealbreaker for some conservative voters… …Why would anyone want to run for President anyway? I’m sure it’s mostly an ego thing. Surely most of these “hopefuls” realize they have zero chance of ever living in the White House. I think a lot of these folks just like to hear themselves talk. Running for president is guaranteed to get you plenty of microphones shoved in your face. Bush is mentioned as the tentative GOP front-runner by some, simply because his name is enough to get him a lot of deep-pocketed donors. Personally, I think there’s no real front-runner. Yet. Someone will shoot himself (or herself) in the foot at some point. Perhaps someone else will have a blindingly great moment in the spotlight. It’s far too early to tell. We’ll know a lot more when the Republicans with presidential ambitions start taking pot shots at each other instead of all aiming at Hillary… …Former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker decided to stay out of the presidential fray this time around and stick with his Senate gig. TIME magazine recently included Corker in its annual list of the “100 Most Influential

People in the World.” As chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Corker is playing a key role in shaping our country’s foreign policy. He has introduced legislation that would ensure Congressional oversight over any potential nuclear energy deal with Iran. Corker seems content with his current highprofile, highly influential role in world events, but… who knows… he might get the presidential itch at some point in the future. He’s certainly likely to be in the mix when the current candidates start pondering potential vice presidents or secretaries of state… …Republican Senators finally got out of the way of Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch’s confirmation vote. The vote stalled for over five months as Lynch’s confirmation hearing devolved into a partisan dispute over abortion. If confirmed, Lynch will become the nation’s first black female attorney general. She is currently the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York. The GOP Senators finally figured out that it made more sense for them to fight for Corker’s expansion of Congressional oversight on deals like the potential Iran nuke agreement than against an AG nominee they can’t really stop… …So much for the inaugural batch of pachyderm gumbo. In real life, I bet it would taste like chicken. I’d try it. And I now Bourdain and Zimmern would… if they haven’t already…

SNOOK, Texas (UPI) - A game of rock-paper-scissors at a Texas Chilifest landed three officers in hot water when they allowed an underage drinker to play the ability to avoid a citation. Constable Dennis Gaas of Burleson County Precinct 2 said the three officers, who work for two different departments, were working security at Chilifest in Snook when they were caught on video allowing a teen girl to play a round of

rock-paper-scissors with one of the officers in a bid to avoid a citation. Video of the game, originally posted to humor website Total Frat Move, shows the girl win the game and celebrate her victory. Gaas said the officers were informed they would not be asked to work security at future events and they were reported to their respective supervisors. He did not identify the officers or the agencies where they work. The constable said “officers are given the choice of giving a warning or issuing a citation for any violation

QUINCY, Mass. - Okay, so you are driving around with a large quantity of loose gunpowder in your front seat (for some reason). If you get the urge to spark up a smoke, don’t! That is unless you are planning on making a homemade bomb, in which case go ahead and light up. It is unclear whether Joseph Brennan of Massachusetts was planning to make a bomb. What is clear is that he blew himself clean out of the driver’s door of his Toyota Camry when he lit a smoke. A

bystander heard the explosion from a block away and came running. He found Brennan with singed hair and burns on his face, lying in the street next to his burning vehicle. “I’m an idiot,” was the first thing Brennan allegedly told the bystander. “I lit a cigarette with gunpowder in the front seat.” Once again, what Brennan was doing with loose gunpowder is unclear, but according to the bystander he risked his life to go back to his wrecked vehicle where he allegedly removed multiple items and put them in the trunk. This, of course, did not deter the police who searched Brennan’s car, where they removed 14 liquids and powders, some of which when combined could create what they called a destructive device. Sounds like ‘bomb’ to me. Brennan allegedly told police he had gotten various materials from a friend to tinker with. “I wasn’t going to do anything malicious,” he said, according to the report. Police Chief Theodore Ross said in a statement that law enforcement searched Brennan’s house and found “precursor components, detonators, and one completed incendiary device.” Although Brennan’s Facebook page shows an interest in rocket propellants, so it is probably harmless tinkering.

Grr aatteeffuull DDee aadd fans who …G didn’t snag tickets to the “Fare Thee Well” shows now have another option to enjoy the final gigs. All five nights will be available online, while the Chicago shows will be broadcast live via Pay-Per-View in North America. Today’s announcement follows last week’s news that Fathom Events would be broadcasting all three nights of the July 3-5 residency at Chicago’s Soldier Field in select movie theaters. The Windy City shows, along with June 27-28 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., make up the band’s 50th anniversary shindig dubbed “Fare Three Well: Celebrating 50

You’re all invited to take part in the big farewell, as long as you have access to a screen in some format, whether it’s in your home, on your mobile device or in participating clubs, music venues, bars or movie theaters nationwide. The Chicago shows will air worldwide via an online streaming platform and the Santa Clara performances will be broadcast live through an online webcast.

Bryan Adams Remains Reckless It seems like only yesterday that I first saw the video for “Cuts Like A Knife”. It’s been about 32 years, however. Granted, I know that ages me, but it caught my ear and eyes because it sounded a lot different from the stuff I was listening to at the time like Duran Duran and Culture Club (don’t judge me). I can still picture the girl on the diving board in the video and the knife stuck into it without the aid of YouTube. It was a mix of rock and punchy pop that was straightforward and actually original for the time, yet a throwback to mid ‘70s rock. Over the course of the 30-plus years in our conscious Adams has written a performed many songs that come to mind and subconsciously hum whether we realize it or not. My biggest knock on Adams’ music is it last sincere testicular fortitude. Adams is the cute younger brother that steals all the older brother jock’s girlfriends – the troubadour. In a way kind of a nerd or a musical Matt Damon. Some of his songs I would listen to but if you asked me I would tell you I didn’t like. At times his songs were soft and syrupy – songs only a girl would like, like “Straight From the Heart”. As guys we listened to it just so we could hopeful-

ly get lucky with our date. Bryan Adams to me in the ‘80s was like what Dave Matthews is to me today… except I like Adams better. Bryan Adams brought the “Reckless” tour to Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park over the weekend. It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years since his mega album came out. Six of the ten singles from the album charted and one that didn’t “Kids Wanna Rock” should have, as it is one of my favorites. Just a spoiler I tend to like the lesser-known tracks by artists. with “Reckless” which ironically wasn’t on that album. He then went through the album and every single you could think of that has his name on it except “Let Me Take You Dancing” a little known disco hit of his from 1978 when he was a teenager. His vocals and tempo were sped up in the production of the album to making his voice sound feminine. Despite having mild success on the radio it’s a song Adams has disowned and is hard to find. Your best bet is some music

Adams has weathered the years well and while he’s not quite the bright-eyed bushy ailed youth I remember from the glory days of MTV, he has held up really well. What has also held up well is his voice. Despite over 30 years of grinding out albums, touring and what have you, I could close my eyes Friday and not tell any difference between Bryan Adams 2015 and Bryan Adams 1984. Despite Mother Nature not cooperating droves of people – a lot of women of all ages of course were there to see their high school crush, Adams perform. Hinder Takes It To The Limit

A trio of hard rockers played to a full house at Rhythm and Brews. Hinder, Full Devil Jacket and Hour Late put on stellar sets to an appreciative crowd.

Hinder. Full Devil Jacket has had an uneven history as they’ve gone through everything stereotypical an alternative metal band does dealing with addiction and death. Duran. Both bands changed the way Americans listened to music, dressed and wore their hair. Their music, their style, and their use of the video (a lost art in America but not overseas) makes Ok Go stand out from the rest. And that is why I love this band - not to mention great, catchy sing Part of the band’s appeal is along songs. they don’t come across as an American rock band. than the band Deadeye Dick. I remember going to a Deadeye Dick show back in the day when “New Age Girl” was on top of the charts. I got to meet the band before the show and they were all very cool. The bass player and I got to be pals. I don’t recall his name and I’m too lazy to Google it while I write this, but you get the point. The band’s debut album with their big hit was a really good album but none of the other singles were picked up on. That’s a shame. They may have been better than “New Age Girl” but didn’t have that quirky appeal. The second album Whirlygig, which I proudly own a copy was better than the first but got no attention. The few shows I did attend the kids were standing around with their arms crossed as the band played their hearts out. They are indeed performance artists that play some of the most addictive songs around. You can’t just listen to Ok Go in concert you have to watch.
