The Day Evil Came to Town: The Tragic Death of Sergeant Tim Chapin April 2 is now a date that to me evokes sadness but also a fond remembrance of camaraderie and bravery. It is the date that my friend, Tim Chapin, rushed to the “sound of the guns” and was tragically killed. Going to the sound of the guns is a police and military phrase for an officer going towards the fight which may actually involve gunfire. However, while it is a sad day it is also a day that I hope reminds us all of heroism and self-sacrifice.

I remember that sad day April 2, 2011. I was eating breakfast in a restaurant when I got a call from a fellow SWAT team member telling me there had been an attempted robbery in the Brainerd road area and officers had been wounded. Minutes later he called back and said two officers were at the hospital and that one was Tim Chapin. He then told me that Tim had died due to his wounds. I was stunned. I yelled out something and stumbled out of the restaurant in total shock. As the day progressed I got

more details by phone, received calls and texts and notified others of the tragedy. It was a day that seems shrouded in a fog-like hazy memory. I felt compelled to go to the scene and went out there. Of course there was nothing I could do but it seemed to help in some way. Tim was a conscientious, friendly, family man. He was liked by his fellow officers and the citizens where he worked. I was stopped by numerous people after Tim’s death and told how he was a great guy or how he’d helped someone. I remember I went in a restaurant

Tim frequented and a waitress came over and hugged me. It was obvious Tim’s death affected not only officers but the public as well. Later in the week after the shooting there was a huge funeral for Tim. Police officers from all over the country came for visitation and the funeral. Hundreds of Officers and mourners somberly walked from the church and down Hixson Pike to the cemetery. A friend of mine who watched the procession described it as surreal. It felt surreal as we walked following blue lines painted on the road-

way to Tim’s gravesite. After the graveside service I noticed numerous retired officers now in civilian clothes scattered throughout the dispersing crowd. There was something very sad about these now almost disembodied souls mourning the loss of their comrade some of whom knew Tim and some who did not. However, they had all “Worn the Blue”. For those who may not be familiar with the sad events of that day let me give a very brief sketch. What started out as a routine spring day on April 2, 2011 went suddenly crazy as a fugitive from Colorado attempted to rob a Brainerd area pawnshop. Something went awry and the alarm was triggered. Police quickly responded but were met by intense gunfire. One officer was hit in the vest and others scrambled to cover under the withering gunfire. Tim obviously heard the call and responded. It is my understanding that the wouldbe robber exited out a side door of the business and Tim struck him with Tim’s patrol car. The criminal regained his feet and left behind one weapon then fled further. The criminal later produced another handgun and shot and killed Tim. This monster was near one smaller road and near a major thoroughfare, East Brainerd Road. I am sure if he had reached that road he would have used any means necessary to make his escape including carjacking and murder of any citizen or officer impeding his escape. Tim prevented his escape until other officers could engage and arrest this murderous monster. Tim’s last act was one of

anniversary of an officer’s death for current officers to place a black band of mourning across their badge. I did not see any black bands on badges this year. I find this very sad. I hope some were wearing the black band on their badge. I know it hurts to remember that day due to Tim’s death however, that was also a day of bravery. It is important we honor and reflect on the fallen whether Police officers or the military. The Chattanooga area has felt the loss of four officers locally during my career. Deputy Sheriff Donald Bond and Julie Jacks were also killed by gunfire. Richard Alexander was killed in a traffic accident on duty very near the Police Services Center.

bravery and service to the public. I do not want to go into detail about why this monster was loose on the streets of Chattanooga or the evil monster’s current situation. I have not nor will I mention the monster’s name. This story is a remembrance of Tim not the criminal who murdered him. Seeing that May is when National Law Enforcement Memorial Week is observed we felt it was appropriate to do an article honoring Tim and to remember all Law

Enforcement Officers who lost their life in the line of duty. Tim was a friend and I know he would say it isn’t just about him but about all the officers who have paid the ultimate price while performing service to the public. Tim was a friend so I can honor him from a personal viewpoint. Another reason I wanted to do this article now was that April 2 was the fourth anniversary of Tim’s death. It seems as time goes by there is less of a remembrance of that horrible day and of Tim’s death. It is customary on the

Let’s remember these and all fallen officers this and every May. National Law Enforcement Memorial Week is May 10-16. There will be a service here at the Hamilton County Justice Center. Many will attend that. Some family and friends will be visiting the gravesites of the fallen. I think it’s important for us all to remember and honor all Police officers who died serving their communities or country. Perhaps to honor the fallen the living need to “walk among the tombstones”. Life goes on but every April 2 I remember that fateful day. I know Tim’s family does.

Drone Warfare Last Thursday, President Obama confessed that a “terrible mistake” had happened last January. Two hostages, American Warren Weinstein and Italian Giovanni Lo Porto, were killed by a U.S. drone strike on an al-Qaeda site in Pakistan. Aerial video footage taken before the attack failed to show the presence of the hostages. The strike was aimed at “highvalue” al-Qaeda targets who were meeting at the compound. Apparently one or more of those targets died during the attack. Both Weinstein and Lo Porto were aid workers who had spent a great amount of time providing relief in a part of Pakistan controlled by the terrorist group. Their deaths were tragic and they have reignited the debate on the effectiveness and morality of our growing use of unmanned drones as missilelaunching platforms…

had learned about the “collateral damage” and was threatening to publish a story about it. The Obama administration patted itself on the back for its “transparency” on the tragic drone strike that took the lives of two hostages, it seems far more likely that the news conference was hastily scheduled to occur before the story could break…

…There are those who praise the use of armed drones in modern warfare. Launching Hellfire missiles from Predator or Raptor drones is supposed to be a more accurate way of delivering high explosives to a target than traditional bombing or longer-range missiles. And, in theory, that makes sense. But our current drone warfare strategy depends almost entirely on aerial surveillance… and the decision processes involved in determining targets …Before I get into my observations leaves a lot to be desired… on drone warfare, it’s worth examining the time gap between the …Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahiri January attack and Obama’s seem- was first targeted by our drone ingly heartfelt apologies to their warfare experts in January of 2006. families last Thursday. Pakistan where Zawahiri was supposed to be staying. He either wasn’t there or survived the attack. Ten months later, the drones came for him again, this time in Bajaur. They missed him again. Zawahiri is still alive (despite several premature reports of his demise). Seventy-six children and 29 adults were killed in the two drone strikes mentioned above. While it can be reasonably argued that at least some of the adults killed in those two attacks had to be terrorists, the children can be presumed innocent. All told, as of November of 2014, an estimated 1,147 people were killed in drone strikes aimed at killing 41 men… …And that’s the “catch-22” of drone warfare. Targeting would be much more precise if we could get “human intelligence” from sources on the ground. But it’s hard to develop “friendly” intelligence assets when random death falls from the skies on so many innocent civilians. “Drone strikes have been sold to the American public on the claim that they’re ‘precise’,” says Jennifer Gibson of Reprieve, who led the study cited above. “But they are only as precise as the intelligence that feeds them. There is nothing precise about intelligence that results in the deaths of 28 unknown people, including women and children, for every ‘bad guy’ the US goes after.” The U.S. drone warfare strategy involves a complex relationship between the Central Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Air Force. Its actual success is hard to pin down because numerous terrorists have been reported as “killed” on multiple occasions…

…When you have a 28-to-1 ratio of “unknown” casualties to actual targets killed… and you’re not that sure if you’ve really gotten the terrorists… your targets are the ones who are being killed accidentally. The excessive collateral damage is one reason the Air Force is losing so many of its drone “pilots.” Those pilots, operating from comfortable U.S.-based control rooms, watch the carnage their actions create in real time… …”How many women and children have you seen incinerated by a Hellfire missile? How many men have you seen crawl across a field, trying to make it to the nearest compound for help while bleeding out from severed legs?” Heather Linebaugh, a former drone imagery analyst*,* wrote <http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/29/drones-us-military> in the *Guardian*. “When you are exposed to it over and over again it becomes like a small video, embedded in your head, forever on repeat, causing psychological pain and suffering that many people will hopefully never experience.” Drone pilots are quitting faster than the Air Force can train them... ...Linebaugh and the others who have seen the horrors that drone warfare can wreak will be scarred forever. So will the families of Warren Weinstein, Giovanni Lo Porto and the still-growing number of “unknown” victims of a U.S. strategy that needs a radical rethink…

CHANNELVIEW, Texas (UPI) - A pregnant Texas woman said she was fired from a Popeye’s eatery for refusing to repay about $400 stolen when she was robbed at gunpoint. Marissa Holcomb, a former shift manager at the Channelview eatery, said about $400 was taken in the March 31 armed robbery, which was recorded by security cameras, and the manager of the Popeye’s location told her she would be fired if she didn’t replace the stolen money. “I

told them I’m not paying nothing,” Holcomb told KHOU-TV. “I just had a gun to me. I’m not paying the money.” Holcomb, who is pregnant with her fourth child, said she was fired less than 36 hours after the robbery. “I don’t think it’s right because now I’m struggling for my family because what I had to do to keep my life,” she said. A representative from the human resources department of franchise owner Z&H Foods Inc., the third-largest franchisee in the Popeye’s chain, said Holcomb was fired for violating company policy by leaving too much money in the register. The

representative said the incident wasn’t Holcomb’s first offense. The representative said the company was not aware of Holcomb being offered the chance to keep her job by repaying the money. Holcomb said the money hadn’t been deposited into the store’s safe because an offer for a $1.19 2-piece chicken meal had the store busier than usual. “They got what they got because that’s what we made within one hour,” she said. Holcomb said she is worried she won’t be able to find another job. “I mean who’s gonna call me? I’m 5 months pregnant,” she said. “The fact that I

got robbed at gunpoint and it’s like nobody cares.” WIMAUMA, Fla. (UPI) - A Florida man is recovering from a cottonmouth snake bite to his lip after he allegedly tried to smooch the serpent on the mouth. Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies said Austin Hatfield, 18, captured the 4foot cottonmouth, also known as a water moccasin, while swimming last week and kept it in a pillowcase at his girlfriend’s house, where he was bitten on the lip.

Friends told investigators Hatfield was trying to kiss the snake when it struck him. Hatfield was initially hospitalized in critical condition, but his status was upgraded to good condition and officials said he is expected to make a full recovery. Investigators said Hatfield did not possess the proper permits required by the state to catch and keep cottonmouth snakes. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it is investigating the incident. LOS ANGELES, CA - Los Angeles surgeons working to remove a tumor from an Indiana woman’s brain said the growth turned out to be the patient’s embryonic twin. Yamini Karanam, 26, a Ph.D. student at Indiana University, said she underwent surgery at the Skull Base Institute after problems she started having with reading and listening comprehension were determined to be the result of a tumor in her brain. Karanam said she was shocked when she woke up after the surgery and Dr. Hrayr Shahinian’s team revealed the tumor to be an embryonic twin with bone, hair and teeth. Shahinian said such a tumor, or “teratoma,” is rare to find in modern medicine. “This is my second one, and I’ve probably taken out 7,000 or 8,000 brain tumors,” Shahinian said. Shahinian removed the tumor using fully endoscopic resection, a minimally invasive brain surgery. Karanam said she now refers to the tumor as an “evil twin sister who’s been torturing me for the past 26 years.” Shahinian said the tumor was not cancerous

punched a patient in the face up to ten times “like a boxer” during treatment. Sure, it sounds a little unorthodox, but not only was the patient under anesthetic, but Professor Peckitt had another dental surgeon who was assisting hold the patient down, so there was very little risk involved...at least for Peckitt. Professor Peckitt was attempting to reduce a fracture when he unexpectedly curled his hand into a fist and began unloading on the patient’s face. The assisting surgeon reported that there were “gasps” from others in the operating theatre and she was left in a state of shock. It was unreported whether Peckitt screamed, “Yeah! Come get some!” during the medical assault. The assisting surgeon told a Medical Practitioners Tribunal, “He said that when the patient fell out of bed, the cheekbone which was already fractured was moved outwards so he was trying to reposition the cheekbone without having to make further cuts to the face.” Sounds very compassionate. The tribunal members said: “The panel has determined that Mr. Peckitt’s misconduct is fundamentally incompatible with his continuing to practice medicine. The panel has determined to direct that Mr. Peckitt’s name be erased from the medical register.” In other words, “Peckitt who? Nobody here by that name. Check the register!” Not that it matters to him much. Professor Peckitt left the hospital and is now believed to be working as a consultant surgeon in Dubai where maybe that kind of medical procedure is a little more accepted.

And this has probably gotten you to believe that you can be instantly rich. But you should remember that there is no such thing as easy money. While many people have made a lot of money in the stock market, it usually entailed huge investments, plenty of time, and strategic planning on their end; not to mention the occasional losses. The stock market isn't for everyone. The same could be said for other 'easy money' schemes like day trading and foreign currency exchange.

You already have the 4 most important financial lessons up your sleeve, and the last thing you need to learn is discipline. Be persistent in employing all that you've learned. It's the only way you can truly attain financial freedom. One mistake and you might end up back in debt, drain months' worth of savings, or waste money you could have saved for rainy days. You don't want to let that happen. Making the right investments is also part of financial discipline. Among the investments you should make are education, life insurance, and health insurance. Don't make risky investments such as a new home or starting a business. These require a lot of thought and planning.

A microbrewery or craft brewery is a brewery that produces a small amount of beer. Exact definitions vary, but the terms are typically applied to breweries that are much smaller than large-scale corporate breweries and are independently owned. Hunter Hayes Offering Up New ‘Storyline’ to Fans It all started for country music heartthrob Hunter Hayes when his grandmother presented him with a toy accordion at age two. He took to the instrument immediately. His parents, neither musically inclined, instinctively knew they had a gifted child on their hands. Cautiously nurturing their only child’s talent, music became a family affair from that point on. Cajun music was his passion, and his first gig, as a fouryear old, was before 200,000 people at the Texas Motor Speedway in 1997. Introduced by country music legend Hank Williams, Jr., young Hunter’s song of choice that day was “Jambalya, On the Bayou”.

genre that is starting to encompass other forms of music. In other words, the field is constantly changing in a good way. And the bottom line to your question is this. Like Cajun, country music is about real

Instead, my musical talent knocked down a lot of walls that otherwise would have been there for me to break through. As far as respect, all I can say is Nashville is a very respectful town despite the fact

From that point on, Hunter’s parents drove him around in their mobile home to music festivals throughout Louisiana. At age nine, he released his first album with more independent Cajun records to follow. The moment for truth for the Hayes family came when their son turned 16. After completing his junior year in high school, Hunter’s mom and dad decided it was time to uproot the family and move to Nashville so their musical prodigy could pursue his dream of becoming a country music star. And become a star he did. Hayes released his self-titled debut album in 2011. It featured the hits “Wanted”, “Somebody’s Heartache” and “Storm Warning”. When “Wanted” went to No. 1, it made Hayes the youngest male performer to ever reach the position, breaking the record previously set in 1973 by Johnny Rodriguez. His second record, SSttoorryylliinnee, was released earlier this year anchored by the single, “Invisible”. As with his previous album, every song was co-written and co-produced by Hayes. He is currently on tour supporting Lady Antebellum.

They don’t pay any attention to the reality of it all. Despite my age (16), I understood completely that the road to break into country music can be a disheartening one. I knew there were going to be all sorts of challenges all along the way, especially when it came to getting your hopes up and feelings hurt. For some reason, I just never let it get to me. Music is what I do and I was determined to pursue this in some shape or form. I am one of the fortunate ones, yes, but I feel like I earned my right to be here. Besides, I was so young and energetic I just refused to believe the risks outweighed the rewards.

Social media has become a tremendous asset in advancing my career. It allows me to reach more people in a personal way to let them know who I really am. Facebook and Twitter have been great ways for me to reach my fans as well. My dream come true is when someone comes up to me and says, “Hunter, I love that song you wrote because … and they explain their passion for the tune.” When I have written a song and someone else listens to it, and for lack of a better term, owns it, that’s what my music is all about – making a connection. I don’t care if it is on Facebook, Twitter or chat rooms. I can’t imagine life without the Internet because it is what I grew up on. It’s the way I discovered a lot of my favorite artists and allowed me to connect with them. It’s an invaluable asset because it breaks down any walls between me and my fans. To fully answer your question, the Internet has become my best friend.

Well first off, I appreciate your kind comment. To answer your question, there are pros and cons to everything you do in this business. I’ve always felt comfortable doing everything myself because that’s how I grew up doing it. It’s nice to be able to walk into a studio and cut a song knowing I can do everything musically by myself. When it comes to songwriting, there are times when I’m challenged by a song’s bridge, melody or even words and I need someone else to come in and look at what I’m doing. I did that a lot on my first album. I’d talk to different songwriters about what I was doing, and after about 90 minutes, they’d get it and we could move on with the song. Other times these writers would come in and say what I was feeling before I ever spoke to them. They captured what I had been thinking, which is rare. As a songwriter, I don’t mind working with co-writers because that’s when the challenges of writing a song become just a bit easier.

around me were smiling and moving about when they heard my performance. Today, I absolutely feel those emotions you mentioned; the various ways of speaking and communicating through music trying to recreate those feelings. When people hear my records, I want them to feel like they are emotionally in there with me on the song. The people I grew up around have always been special to me. Today, I can reach so many more people with my music; it’s hard for me to describe how much of an impact that’s had on my career and who I am as a person. Even when it comes to shaking someone’s hand or taking pictures during a meet and great session, physically acknowledging my fans means a great deal to me. Whether that connection is on Facebook or Twitter, social media has allowed me to literally reach out and connect with thousands upon thousands of people that normally I could never have reached. The Internet has become an invaluable asset to my career, especially video. It has broken down any walls that may have existed with my fan base and has allowed all of us create a wonderful relationship where we all have become best friends.

ffoorr yyoouu.. It means the world to me when someone comes up and explains what my song meant to them. For instance, I had this girl come up to me one time, tell me what a song meant to her, and her interpretation was completely different from how I had written it. But that didn’t matter. She loved the song for a specific reason and that was perfectly fine with me. I have no idea what to credit that to, but those types of situations are a dream come true for me because I have reached someone’s soul with my words. It reminds me of why I love what I do so much.

Cajun music will always hold a special place in my heart, but country music is something I feel drawn to. Actually, there are some beautiful relationships between the two musical cultures when you think about it. The communication of emotions and direct honesty both genres entail is a common ground between the two. My parents and I never discussed that. I wanted to grow as an artist and country music was the direction I wanted to go. My folks were a hundred percent behind the decision. Nashville is where I wanted to be. I had been talking to the Warner Music Group and had a big believer in Scott Hendricks who had joined the company right before my family moved to Nashville. He was one of the first people to take me around town. Scott took me to meet the various label heads at Warner. He really was determined to help me succeed anyway he could. Thinking back, his support for me was impressive. About this time, Atlantic Records was getting back into country music. I met their CEO, Craig Kallman, and he was very complimentary of the music I had written. The very first meeting I had with him, he told me flat out they were going to make my record happen and he really wanted me on Atlantic.

(Laughing) No, no nothing like that. In fact, I worked at Dann’s home studio for three months so I met his whole family. It’s funny, but he doesn’t push music on any of his kids, they just did it on their own. Outside of the musical part, I saw a whole different side of Dann I really learned to respect as well.

When I started looking for a producer, the first person I thought of was Dann Huff. There was something about his work where he could pull something out of an artist to make the song click. In fact, when I first started coming to Nashville, one of the first meetings I had was with Dann. He was in a hurry at the time, but he took the time to sit down with me. I played a song on the acoustic guitar and afterwards he said, “Hunter, you don’t have to say another word. However you want to do it, I’m there with you. If you want to do just one song, I’ll do it.” When I got the publishing deal with Universal, Dann would come down and listen to what I was doing, then chat about music for three hours afterwards. I’d go to his house and talk about the music I wanted to put on my album before I ever signed a deal.

I can honestly say that everyone in the band, I knew as soon as the various people I needed walked in the door they were the one. They were into the music, had great attitudes and before they’d start the song, each one asked me what I was thinking when I had created the specific part. There was a definite respect level – not that I deserved it – but they respected the musician side of me who had played everything on the record, and they admired me for it. I did eight to ten songs with every one of these guys in their audition, and after the first song, I knew they were in. If I changed anything musically in a particular section of a song, which I did quite often, they were with me.

A year into this new "newspaperreading" project, I realized (quite late) why I initially stopped reading the newspapers for quite so many years. One of the reasons being, newspaper companies publish only news that would sell them fast and publish only what they want us to read.

Over the past year, the one thing that I have come to realize is that, our wonderful journalists and reporters are so creative, that they actually print even the slightest detail like a political figure passing gas into a creative piece as to how that gas had nuclear contamination that threats the neighboring countries. It’s been a while since these cats have been in these parts – or any parts for that matter. It’s been nine years since we’ve heard any noise from Sleater-Kinney. The critic’s darling trio indie/punk band has ushered in for 2015 not only a new album, but their first tour since 2006.

Seeing the Light than New Order’s higher-pitched Bernard Sumner. Curtis’ suicide in May of 1980 marked the end of Joy Division and Sumner emerged as the lead vocalist when he, Hook, JD drummer Steven Morris, and keyboardist Gillian Gilbert formed New Order later that year. Hook’s relationship with his former bandmates has been rather strained in recent years, so his emphasis on material from the Joy Division catalog is understandable.

Last things first. Of course they played “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” It was the final song of the encore. Of course it was. The audience went wild. Of course it did. Former Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook brought his current touring band, Peter Hook and The Light, to Nashville’s Exit/In Tuesday night and delivered a solid show comprised mostly of the two Joy Division albums, “Unknown Pleasures” and “Closer.” A foursong mini-set before the main performance opened with New Order’s moody instrumental, “Elegy,” and included a few teasing riffs of “Blue Monday” before segueing into “Bizarre Love Triangle.” A few other New Order songs were sprinkled into the set list (including “Temptation,” one of my personal favorites, and “State Of The Nation”), but the often dark (but

Hook played bass, guitar and electronic drums with The Light. He has always been known for his highend bass lines and he spent a lot of time exploring those grooves Tuesday night. His son, Jack Bates, provided additional bass. I’d never seen a live act with two bass players before, but it definitely worked. Guitarist David Potts was spot-on with his takes on Sumner’s

fretwork. Andy Poole’s keyboards and backing vocals added more atmospheric layers to the mix. Drummer Paul Kehoe blended well with both bassists and sometimes seemed to be channeling the thunderous pounding that Morris is famous for. “Shadowplay,” “Disorder,” and “Interzone” were all as good as I expected them to be. But I was particularly impressed by PHATL’s interpretations of “Twenty-Four Hours,” “Isolation,” “Atrocity Exhibition,” and “Colony.” Curtis’ lyrics often emphasized emotions over traditional structure and Hook captured those emotions with intensity. Joy Division was a hugely influential English band and other bands love to cover their songs. The Killers did a killer version of

ical when one former member of a famous band hits the road to perform songs from his prior musical career. But Peter Hook and The Light breathed new life into timeless Joy Division songs that deserve to be heard. The Exit/In audience was demographically diverse. I met a 61-yearold guy from Muscle Shoals who brought his 30-year-old daughter up for the show. I ran into a gaggle of fellow Chattanoogans. Brandon and Heather, two recent SoCal transplants attending their first Exit/In gig, had a blast. (Thanks for the cold brew, Brandon.) One bluehaired 20-something traveled down to Music City from Chicago for the show.
