Dear Rocco, Why do people seem to go crazy when someone famous dies especially in the entertainment interest? Some seem more upset than when a family member dies. RN Dear RN, I don’t think the grieving is greater than when a family member dies unless there is a discon nect to a person’s immediate family. That being said people do act out or show a lot of grief when someone of fame especially in the entertainment field for simple reasons. We all have a connection to a musician’s song(s) or a movie or TV show because we can relate to what was going on in our life at that time when the song or artist was popular. Often music becomes the personal soundtrack of our life relating the music to good and bad times in our life that motivated us and helped us through trying or sad times. Therefore we have a connection to certain songs and artists. In movies and TV we can relate to a character in a show and sometimes the person portraying that role now thanks to social media.

We were best friends got along famously and argued famously over things like music and movies (nothing earth-shattering). We lost touch a few years into college as our lives went in separate paths. There was no animosity involved, our lives literally took us in two different directions even globally. Thanks to social media we’ve sort of reconnected. It wasn’t until last week we “talked” when he sent me the nicest note hoping I was doing well. I of course responded and told him I was glad he was doing well and told him how ai always thought he was a great guy. I am now wondering the purpose of his nice words after all these years. I noticed he was single as am I now and wondered if that had anything to do with is message. What do you think? EJ

A Duel With Witnesses The Republican and Democratic primaries have been virtually decided for weeks now. Barring any major surprises, Donald J. Trump and Hillary Rodham Clinton will face off in November’s presidential election. They come at it from opposite ends of the political spectrum. Trump is the ultimate outsider. He’s never run for political office before and admits that he had never voted in a primary before he registered to run in one. Trump is a moderately successful real estate tycoon, by Manhattan standards, but his high recognition factor comes mainly as a result of his reality television exploits. Ms. Clinton, on the other hand, is the consummate political insider. She built her own power base as first lady of first Arkansas and then the United States of America. She collect-

The Associated Press had Trump winning 82 of them — and counting. A hero of Greek mythology, known for his virility and thirst for women, has been stripped of his manhood one too many times, according to a seaside town in France. A three-meter statue of Heracles, or Hercules, Greek mythology’s divine hero, has stood in the Parc Mauresque in Arcachon since 1948, and the town has been powerless to stop vandals from constantly snapping off the beloved sculpture’s genitalia. Until now, that is. To avoid any further pain or embarrassment to the statue, the townspeople have created a removable penis for the Greek

Market in Longview. The ensuing police chase reached speeds exceeding 100 mph and crossed two counties before the man was apprehended by Upshur County sheriff’s deputies and East Mountain police. East Mountain police Sgt. Marc Nichols said the suspect attempted to get rid of some of the pilfered meats while fleeing police. “It appears that there’s steaks and meats of some sort flying out the windows, and one of them bounced off my patrol car. That’s not something you think of people stealing, especially running from the police in the process.

Today was a new one.” Nichols said the suspect surrendered after eventually stopping. Investigators said the suspect, whose name was not released, is believed to be a heroin user. The Natural Environment Research Council doesn’t know how the Internet works. The British Research Council that supports research, training and education in the environmental sciences went to the Internet to name their brand new polar research vessel. The idea was supposed to be a goodwill campaign to generate public interest and support of the NERC and its programs. Unfortunately for them, the name the Internet chose for the 200m Euro ship was RRS Boaty McBoatface. In fact, Boaty McBoatface received 124,109 votes, four times more than the secondplaced name. However, the chief executive of the NERC, Duncan Wingham, will have the final say in the naming of the boat, so it is unlikely RRS Boaty McBoatface will ever weigh anchor. Science minister Jo Johnson said, “We want a name that lasts longer than a social media news cycle and reflects the serious nature of the science it will be doing.” So much for the power of social media. MAINZ, Germany - A male stripper sparked panic in Frankfurt’s redlight district after being spotted with what appeared to be an assault rifle and bullet-proof vest emblazoned with FBI. “A significant number” of police officers were deployed to the area after Saturday night’s sighting, officials said. The 30-year-old Hungarian man was later found in a table-dance bar, where he revealed the suspicious items were part of the costume for his act. The weapon turned out to be a plastic replica, according to a police statement. After a delay, the stripper was permitted to perform, “but whether his act was a success, is not known,” police added. ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Residents of an Alaska neighborhood said their privacy is being violated by an unusually high-tech peeping Tom using a camera drone. Neighbors in the Prominence Pointe area of Anchorage said the drone has been seen flying close to homes and appeared to use its camera to look into windows. Melissa Bolland said her children alerted her to the drone flying around their home. “My children noticed it first. It kind

of came down, hovered around like above the trampoline over there, went around the house kind of really low, hanging to the windows, and then went straight up to the tree and then off again,” Bolland said. Neighbor Bri Tollefsen said she tried chasing the drone in her car to find its owner, but she lost track of it. “My gut feeling is it’s here casing homes and trying to find out who’s there or not,” Tollefsen said. “The moment you feel like your privacy is taken away in your own home, it’s not a good feeling.” Police confirmed they responded to at least one call about a window-peeping drone, but the device was not located and no report was filed. The Federal Aviation Administration bars the use of personal drones over private property without permission and the law requires owners to be within line-of-sight of their aircraft at all times. POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - A man from Florida has constructed a bubble-like vessel that he plans to use to travel to along the Bermuda triangle. Reza Baluchi has set out to travel from Pompano Beach to Bermuda, Haiti, Cuba and Puerto Rico in a man-propelled bubble he calls a hydro-pod. The bubble has 36 buoyancy balls on each side and Baluchi will be equipped with a life vest containing a water filter, a GPS tracking device, and shark repellent. Baluchi attempted the trip once before in October 2014, but his voyage was cut short when Coast Guard officials rescued him after his GPS fell into the ocean 70 miles off of St. Augustine. “They burst my bubble, and now I put signs up that say ‘Please don’t burst my bubble,’” he said. Baluchi is an endurance athlete and has also attempted other feats including surviving six weeks in Death valley and running around the perimeter of the United States. He also said he began jumping rope in a sauna and running 20 miles a day to prepare for the trip. Baluchi said that he uses his stunts to raise money for children in need and plans to run through every country in the world to gather funds for that cause. “I try to do the best thing from my heart. Giving help to children,” he said. He began his journey by casting off from Pompano Beach on Wednesday afternoon and requested that Coast Guard officials leave him alone this time around. ENIGMA

Today in your travels count the things that you count on in other people and if one of them is loyalty you have been given a great gift – perhaps the greatest. Remember, there is something wrong with your character if opportunity controls your loyalty.

Trump Cracks the Ceiling Like a lot of business-oriented Republicans, I never thought Donald Trump had much of a chance of winning the party's nomination.

Sure, he had his fame and his fans, which assured him a pretty fast start for a political novice. The Trumpeters put a floor under his poll numbers, but the same things that attracted his core supporters were going to turn off everyone else. Trump could lead with 20 percent of the Republican vote in a field of 17 candidates, but once the field narrowed to two or three, the same 20 percent - or even 30 or 35 percent - would make him a guaranteed loser.

And then there is Trump, the biggest surprise of all. As the field narrowed, his ceiling crept higher. Still, lots of people - including Cruz and Kasich - felt Trump would lose in a head-to-head fight with one "real" Republican. He Or so I thought. Cruz and Kasich subsequently came out with a much-ballyhooed statement saying they would collaborate to stop Trump. Kasich would stop campaigning in Indiana to give Cruz a better shot against Trump in that state's primary. Cruz would back off from campaigning in New Mexico and in Oregon, where early primary vot-

ing is already underway, to give Kasich better odds in those states. A big Trump win in Indiana will pretty much turn out the lights in both of his rivals' campaigns. Whether or not this alliance could make much of a difference is open to debate. But the prospects do not look great when, less than a week into their agreement, it has

already shown signs of internal strain. Meanwhile, in a bid to boost his chances, Cruz has taken the unusual step of announcing a running mate, tapping Carly Fiorina for the position. Policies, principles and personality all are important in political campaigns. A lot of Republicans, myself included, may believe Trump falls short of the goal for a prospective president in all three areas. But let's not lose sight of the fact that the most important factor in an election is votes. In that area, Trump has thus far been exactly what he claimed to be: a winner. Trump broke through the ceiling that I once was certain would hold him down. The next few months will show us how high he might rise. Given how much most Republicans loathe Clinton, and considering Trump's track record in persuading a larger share of the party's voters to back him, it may be higher than today's polls would lead us to believe. Underestimating Trump has thus far been a strategy for losers.

Purple’s Reign the rest of the world know Prince Rogers Nelson was found dead at his compound – or as the whole world called him – Prince. Still at this writing the exact cause of his death is not completely know. Prince as an intensely talented musician and singer, an extremely private person who somehow knew how to be in the spotlight while only letting a handful in his private life. And unlike his contemporaries of the time Michael Jackson and Rick James his career or reputation was never soiled by his private life. There were no scandals, no known drug abuse or sexual battery in his life. He was a quiet workaholic eccentric musical genius who micromanaged his music and private life deftly.

Well once again a part of my youth this has been happening at an was ripped away from me. And alarming rate of late. As you and

And while everyone is dusting off their copies of “Purple Rain” and “1999” or blogging and making social media contents letting everyone know they lie even his new stuff and we should have as well. And while I am sad because of Prince’s passing, it’s not because of his musical legacy that has now come to a stop, it is because of how is music fit into my life like the proverbial “soundtrack of our lives” you hear (or read) people talk (read) about. Prince’s music reminds me of some of the best times in my life in retrospect and the fact his music was and many times wasn’t playing in the background - more so than attending his concert or a chance meeting. I only saw him perform once and that was a quickly announced show. But more on that at a later

date. When I was in high school I took a weekend job as a dishwasher at Rock City Restaurant. I think I was in tenth grade at the time. For my two days of work I made $32 a week. I thought I was a king back then. I was very familiar with the restaurant. It was not far from where we lived and my mom worked their briefly as a “salad maker” to make extra money. The whole staff minus one or two people still worked there when I began from when my mother worked there and I was kind of considered a “legacy”. These folks soon became a second family for me. My weekends during school were spent there and many summers I worked fulltime for many years. The chef was a big, burly man named William Franklin – or “Frank” as we all called him. I remember as a kid my mom telling me how he would make a roast that would literally melt in your mouth. I remember on occasion mom would bring me home some-

thing he cooked. As a fat kid I was in heaven. Frank and I hit it off instantly and famous. I might as well tell you now I was the only white person working in the kitchen. And you know what? Nobody cared or paid attention to it. We didn’t think about stuff like that “back in my day”. When we weren’t busy Frank and always talked about everything under the sun from sports to girls to music and what was on TV. Ironically we never talked politics. That never came up in any conversation with anyone there unlike today’s generation that is so politically charged it’s toxic. Our manager was a long time manager named Grady Foster. Grady was a black Groucho Marx. He looked identical to the Marx brother circa the “You Bet Your Life” era wearing the same glasses and even smoking a cigar. He also kept a six-pack of Schlitz beer in one of the coolers and when he ate always had a beer and a shot of whiskey. Everyone noticed how quickly Frank and I bonded and once Mr. Foster asked Frank where

“his so” was. From that moment on until my last day working there I always called Frank “dad” and he called me “son”. I think Mr. Foster was jealous of our camaraderie. Frank was a friend, counselor, father figure, good sport and good for a laugh. He was a great role model for me and I was the son he never had. He had two daughters, but no sons. In my work station I had a small boom box and I pretty much controlled what the rest of the kitchen listened to. I listened to a lot of WJTT back then before they became “Power 94”. They were “Jet Fli” that played “soul, disco, jazz and more”. Nowadays they mainly play rap or rap derivative music that isn’t my cup of tea. During the day we would hear everything from Michael Jackson, the Spinners, Planet P, Rick James, Teena Marie, Donna Summer and more. I remember this girl that worked in the salad station told me about this crazy show she and her friends saw down at the Memorial Auditorium. She told me about this little guy that acted all crazy and even had a big bed on stage. This was an era when most people didn’t go to the Memorial Auditorium downtown because of safety issues. “He comes here about once a month,” she told me. It was none other than Prince, Morris Day and the Time, Vanity 6 and one or two other artists.

MAY 2016

I went down to the Record Bar and found the album “Controversy”. The boom box in the kitchen also had a tape deck and I would entertain my co-workers with the sounds of everything from Michael Jackson to Prince. And then there was the great ban. Whether there was an actual ban I’m not sure but this was a town that protested many years to keep “Oh Calcutta!” out of town. Google that if you don’t know what that is. As I said two paragraphs earlier Prince would have a large bed on stage. As the story goes he simulated masturbation on the bed and the powers that be told the artist known as Prince he was no longer welcome in town. And he stayed away until 1998, which was the last time he ever played here. When “1999” it was in rotation with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. There was an even brief controversy who was better as our loyalty as Prince was considered an upstart. But I had all that and Frankie Smith’s “Double Dutch Bus” and more. I remember when “Little Red Corvette” came out. We had this hostess at the restaurant that went to Howard High School. She always seemed a little snobby to me and very proper. I remember she had gotten a new car. It was a Chevy Chevette hatchback. I was

jealous, being a fellow teenager and still riding my bike to work. Her name was Paula. The “break” table were the staff ate their meals was in front of the dishwashing station. One day when Paula was back there eating Prince came on the radio. I sang the song to her but changed the lyrics from “Little Red Corvette” to “Little Red Chevette”. Her eyes got big and then she busted out laughing. We both laughed. And from that day forward until we both left the place we would cut up, make jokes and inappropriate comments to each other about everyone. And her older brother David came to work there we were three peas in a pod. Mr. Foster seemed disconcerted about how Frank or dad and I had a unique bond, as did Paula and I. It may have also confounded many because I was the only white kid around. But like I said we had other things to talk about besides race and inequality. We accepted each other and that led to many good times and made working at a crappy tourist trap restaurant not only tolerable. And we were very close. I witnessed one of the most horrible things happen before my eyes when I worked there. While cutting up vegetables for a large pot of stew Frank dropped to one knee and got the most haunting look on his face. Frank was having a heart attack. I remember him being carried out and put in an ambulance. I was in silence and shock. This was in an era before cell phones, social media and even faxes machines. It was also against company policy to give out anyone’s home phone number if they didn’t offer it to you. Every week I came in to work I would ask Mr. Foster if he heard any news on Frank. Frank fully recovered and told Mr. Foster to give me his address if I would life to visit.

smiled and gave me a bear hug and then called his two daughters into the living room. “Girls,” he said. “This is your brother Dave.” They smiled and we said hello. I could tell they saw that the two of us had a special bond. And that is what Prince’s music represented to me. It crossed all sorts of racial boundaries without trying. It was accessible to everyone and came along at a great time unlike today where boundaries and borders are built up between people for no particular region. And at this time I was not only listening to Prince and Morris Day but everything from the Human League, The Vapors and Duran Duran. I had a unique and eclectic taste in music that now has dwindled in part to the changing tastes in music and culture – the downfall of our culture. Things changed years later. The once stable environment of Rock City Restaurant was thrown in a wood chipper. One by one everyone left. Mr. Foster was unceremoniously fire after almost 20 years there. Janie Mae, the cook, whom I referred to as “mom” left. Paula left for college out of state and so on and so forth. We tried to keep the family together. We decided one hot, summer nigh we would all go out for drinks. Frank, Janie Mae, Paula, Donna, Ann and a couple more from the restaurant all met at the Whole Note. We continued to carry on like family even away from “home”. Despite a job tat sucked I had some of the best times in my life and we didn’t have to tell others about our “white” or “black: friend. We were all friends and race didn’t matter to us whereas today it’s the biggest hot button issue. And we were friends because we wanted to be, not because we were making a political statement. And during that happy time Prince was one of the players in the soundtrack of my life and why I appreciated him and will miss him although not as much as Frank who I never saw again after I left.

I remember driving to his house in St. Elmo and cautiously approaching the front door. His wife let me in. It was one of the few times I had ever seen Frank without his chef’s hat on. At that point the only other time was when he I miss dad and I’ll miss Prince. slumped to the ground when he had his heart attack and his hat hit - Dave Weinthal the floor ahead of him. Frank ENIGMA

The 'Perks' of Aging - Pros: Maturity, Wisdom and Experience or Cons: Outdated, Worn and Dull? Of course, you've heard it all before... When you're young, you believe you're invincible and you have the world at your feet, not to mention all the time in the world to do whatever you deem important and worthwhile... later... but not now. Because "you're only young once", so making the most of that too-short period defines having a good ol' time, but we won't go into what that may mean to young people. Now before any parents or young adults are offended, it goes without saying that many young people, especially in this day and age, are far more mature, sensible, realistic and focused about their futures and careers than many of us of previous generations. Mainly because the economy is what it is, and no one can keep up with our technology running away from us (that's a subject for another day). However, it's my personal opinion that many younger people are also more jaded, spoiled and way too tough. It's like their brains are programmed mostly towards materialism. Truthfully, this sad flaw is the probable result of parents catering to their children's every whim, whether rich or not, because parents have adapted this guilt factor for one reason or another in this increasingly fast-paced world over ours, e.g. working late too often or forgetting parents' night or having to meet that big-money tycoon instead of going to their daughter's dance recital or their son's football

PUZZLE ANSWERS

game. Oh, and let's not forget the single parents, who're always on guilt trips merely because they try to be mom and dad. So parents tend to buy stuff to soften the blow and make up for hurt feelings, or in some cases, parents mistakenly believe they can "buy" their child's love... Wow, as parents we sure do some really dumb stuff! Obviously it's only because we love them and always with the best of intentions but nevertheless, still really dumb. Yep, that's a 'pros' and 'cons' of a different sort. The perk is we learn from our mistakes, which usually comes with age and maturity. The con is that unfortunately we don't realize that how we handle certain situations with our children while they're young and impressionable comes full circle in their not-socommendable attitude towards us as they grow older, i.e. lack of respect and lack of appreciation. Live and learn, right?! Regrettably, none of us can turn back the clock, but we never stop learning. Another lovely 'perk' complementing life's journey as we plunge towards the threshold of aging. No, yours truly cannot claim training or knowledge in psychology, however understanding human nature evolves from being one, and having a closet full of good intentions and bad mistakes undeniably is a 'perk' when it comes to having a pretty good sense of what makes us humans tick.

Frankly, the cons of aging aren't simply wrinkles and flaccid skin, which aren't a cheery prospect in themselves to tolerate. If ever there was a world of chivalry, respect and appreciation, in which the young looked up to the elders anticipating their pros of invaluable wisdom, knowledge and experience, it's clearly not our world at present. In this world, the cons are gaining the upper hand when it comes to the older, mature generation.

- H. Boulet It's even more hard-hitting for

Now moving on to another symptom of pros vs. cons: If you lose your job after the age of 40, all your 'maturity, wisdom and experience' will not necessarily help you find a new one, because it seems that employers will only see you as 'outdated, worn and dull', no matter how fabulous your resume or CV is. How can this be true? Alas, it's a gloomy reality that's been ignored for too long. Overall unemployment statistics are a terrible state of affairs everywhere, but here's a bit of enlightenment as to how bad it really is according to Trading Economics for both the UK and the US: "Unemployment Rate in the United ENIGMA

RUMOUR HAS IT… …A rare piece of movie memorabilia from Prince’s 1984 classic film “Purple Rain” is hitting the auction block. Prince donned the blackand-white blazer with leather sleeves while riding a motorcycle with co-star Apollonia Kotero. “It’s definitely the most important piece of screen-worn Prince clothing that’s ever come up for auction,” said Joe Maddalena, president of the Calabasas, California-based auction house, Profiles in History. “This is a signature piece of wardrobe worn from an iconic movie in his most famous role.”

Daisy Fancourt and Aaron Williamon took saliva samples of concertgoers before and after two separate Eric Whitacre gigs – one at the Union Chapel, the other at Gloucester Cathedral – and registered a drop in glucocorticoid levels. According to the scientists, this suggests “that attending a live performance leads to lower secretion of glucocorticoids and a reduced cortisol/cortison ratio, indicating lowered biological stress.” They note that “none of these biological changes were associated with age, musical experience or familiarity with the music being performed,” suggesting that there was “a uni-

Mum(ford)’s the Word

Some may have wondered if Mumford and Sons were going through a “mid-life crisi” as there was a shift in sound on their latest release that was more of a rock album compared to the sound that put the Brit rockers on the map since their inception nine years ago as a folksy, bluegrassy Americana indie band. Some even compare it to Ray LaMontagne’s shift in sound to a more psychedelic sound in recent recordings.

That being said fans of the band did not seem bothered by this as the band performed to packed houses at Infinite Energy Arena two nights in a row.

The band deftly blended their traditional sound with the new – one might even call experimental sound. And good for the band. Instead of rely on a tried and true and after time a tired formula the quartet was willing to expound their musical vocabulary instead of playing it safe. The greatest artists in the universe have done this – everyone from the Beatles, Bowie and dare I say Madonna (excuse my gag reflex here).

Alabama Shakes Rattles and Rolls

©Dave Weinthal

As I stood around waiting for Alabama Shakes to start I looked around the room and began to chuckle. Yep, it was a full house and I was stuck with a bunch of Millenials and hipsters (pretty much the same, but you get the idea). As they waited for Brittany Howrd and her band to take the stage everyone was intently watching the smartphones with the occasional “selfie”. Chattanooga has pretty much become a parody of the real world. And then something magical happened. Alabama Shakes sauntered on stage and began to play. For the first time all night I saw people put their phones down unlike the poor opener Dylan LeBlanc who put on a nice opening set but interfered with the crowd’s socializing.

As I listened to the music I the quality of what was played thought to myself, “I’ve heard over the airwaves was far superior, especially compared to this before”. today where corporate consultUntil the other night I had ants from hundreds of miles never heard a song by the band away will dictate what you and despite the fact they won three I listen to. Even Howard’s appearance to me is reminiscent of the scene of the mid ‘60s with her horn rimmed glasses reminiscent of picture I would see in old issues of Time magazine. Her soulful voice enticed the audience who most like had not removed their phones from the faces all day and made them pay attention. And while the music was evocative of a past era, the talent involved with making this music not only paid respect to the roots of their sound but leaves hope to those of us that have become cynical of the direction in popular music that there still is hope yet.
