Philanthropic Benevolence, Enabling Entitlement, or Just Wrong? Two lovely topics hot in the media are philanthropy and entitlement. Interesting these two terms are rarely used in the same sentence, paragraph, or even in the same article as the first has a connotation of good-heartedness and generosity and the latter takes on a more negative tone. Philanthropic

measures such as new housing, job training, and monetary gifts can make a wonderful, positive difference in the lives of those who are living in poverty and squalor by offering a new direction and a better chance for prosperity. It may well work as an exit key that leads to entry into a better realm.

ENIGMA

Entitlement, defined as a prerogative and a privilege, may be seen as support and a hand up, but it may also direct toward a "give me" lifestyle where the recipient does not need to work or help or dedicate him/herself to anything other than personal benefits. There are certain inalienable rights defined in the constitution such as life and the pursuit of happiness that can be viewed

as entitlements - "I deserve these and have earned them by way of citizenship". Other items defined as entitlements include health care, education, and safety. Simply because a person lives and breathes, these are available, with or without any appreciation or determination to put these gifts to good use. I am wondering how often philanthropy, however well

intentioned, leads to a since of "mine by right". We storm into other countries, disrupting a way of life that has existed for years and thrust our values upon the system. We drill reservoirs and dams for waterpower as we wipe out villages and hunting grounds and then construct water purification plants for sanitary drinking. We erect schools and offer materials such as books and paper, and we provide religious facilities that reflect our beliefs and social mores. All of this is done with open heart and semi-open mind, but we rarely question those who receive these gifts as to whether they are what people need or want. You may think, "But everyone needs clean water" and in my mind they do. However with clean water come pipes and plants and building materials and life-changing situations. "Industrialization" arises that brings in more people that add jobs for those who are skilled. These people are often recruited and so are new to an area and they may not accept the local culture. Those with jobs become richer; those who are to be

helped stay the same or are even poorer as former privileges are taken away, land values increase, and formerly free life transmutes into rules and regulations. Or a house is built for someone who loves the tent connection with the earth. Or food is given that is also an enormous dietary change plus a crop or animal that is not sustainable in the area. When the helpers leave, not only have old standards been lost, but the new life is confusing and not suitable or supportable in the region. In the end good thoughts and deeds may transform independent individuals into dependently enabled people. Why work when everything is provided instantaneously with no effort or action? When does help become a hindrance? I know some people survive on food stamps and supplemental housing. I do not begrudge these as I know most who qualify are in dire straits. And besides it is not my position in life to judge, only to love and support and move away when what am I doing to help becomes a deterrence to suc-

visited a chapel in a distant land where vigilant church members had gathered and sent bibles for years on end. When asked, "Have you made good use of our gifts?" she was walked to an enormous closet filled with these. When asked why they weren't being used reasons included wrong language, wrong religion, and an illiterate populace.

So the next time you read about philanthropic works or you are recruited to be a part of such a service, ask many questions: Is this what people need and want? Does this make sense for the region? Is this "gift" sustainable? Does this work benefit and help the intended recipients? What will happen when support ends? This reminds me - Gini Cunningham of a missionary friend who

MONEY MANAGEMENT

5 PRACTICAL TIPS FOR LIFELONG FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability is usually a term about environmental issues. Lately it's become more of a personal finance term as well. That's because financial decisions need to be sustained over the long term. To sustain you and your family over time, Financial Sustainability means planning and flexibility. Having Plans B, C and D is a necessity.

funds, particularly if your employer still offers a 401(k) match. Once you have your emergency fund, keep on saving. A good goal is to put aside at least 10 percent of your earnings each month (or as you can afford it). By retirement, you'll have a nice chunk of money to nest in.

Here are a few tips for those who want to see their money stay around as long as they do. Save Before You Invest

Being a habitual bill payer signals to banks and issuers that you are a risk worth taking. Paying credit cards or mortgages late will lead to negative consequences that damage your credit score and overall credit health. Banks and issuers consider payment history when evaluating your credit risk. A long-standing history of on-time payments

It's a good idea to secure at least nine months of living expenses saved before even thinking about investing. As you plan your savings strategy, make sure you contribute enough to your retirement

SSppeenn dd ffoorr RR eettiirreem meenntt A simple trick for saving: spend less than you earn. That might not be easy if you are already having trouble keeping up with bills. A spending plan would take care of that. Some people call this a budget, but since we're referring to retirement as something to buy, a spending plan is more appropriate. Think of a budget not as a means to the end of buying a 60-inch television but a budget that will sustain over decades that will put you out ahead financially once you're deep into retirement.

CIENEGA SPRINGS, Ariz. (UPI) Authorities in Arizona responding to a report of human remains in the Colorado River said they actually discovered a staged “underwater skeleton tea party.” The La Paz County Sheriff’s Department said deputies received a report Monday from a Colorado River snorkeler who spotted what appeared to be human remains near the Cienega Springs boat launch. A Buckskin

Fire Department diver investigated with a video camera and discovered the reported remains were actually a pair of fake skeletons in lawn chairs having what the sheriff’s department described as an “underwater skeleton tea party.” “Although the call itself was resource intensive, both the Sheriff’s Office and Buckskin Fire were happy to find that the remains weren’t real and thanked the reporting party for making the call,” the department said.

OMAHA (UPI) - A Nebraska woman filed a seven-page handwritten court brief detailing her lawsuit against all homosexuals on behalf of “God” and “his son, Jesus Christ.” Sylvia Driskell, 66, of Auburn, filed a federal lawsuit Friday in Omaha asking for a federal judge to rule on whether or not homosexuality is a sin. Driskell’s seven-page court brief, which is entirely handwritten, describes the woman as an “ambassador for plaintiffs God, and his son, Jesus Christ.” The

defendants listed in the lawsuit are “homosexuals,” noting the group uses the “alis [alias], gay.” The brief cites several Bible verses and argues “that homosexuality is a sin and that they the homosexuals know it is a sin to live a life of homosexuality. Why else would they have been hiding in the closet.” Driskell cited the Biblical destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah as evidence of God’s distaste for “immoral

behavior.” “I never thought that I would see a day in which our great nation or our own great state of Nebraska would become so compliant to the complicity of some peoples lewd behavior,” Diskell wrote. “Why are judges passing laws, so sinners can break religious and moral laws. Will all the judges of this nation, judge God to be a lier [liar].” Driskell is representing herself in the lawsuit. SOUTH AFRICA - When most women want a sample of semen from a guy all they have to do is put on a short skirt, low-cut top and go to a bar. Or go to the Internet, or pick up a phone, or make eye contact with a guy in the grocery store. Pretty much any of these tactics will work, but maybe things don’t work the same way in South Africa as they do here, because apparently there is a ring of women there who are kidnapping men for their semen. Most recently a man was kidnapped at gunpoint and raped by three women who collected his semen in a cooler and stealing it before abandoning their victim. This method seems to be part of a growing trend. The 33-year-old man gave the women directions when they pulled up in a black BMW. Suddenly, one of the women armed with a gun got out and forced him into the back of the

car. The trio then drove him over a hundred miles away and fondled him in the back of the car but he did not become aroused, so they forced him to drink an ‘unknown substance’ from a bottle to aid him. They then raped the man repeatedly and collected his semen in plastic bags, placing them in a cooler. The man was then kicked out of the car while the women made off with the stolen sperm. The exact same method is being used by women in Gauteng, who are also forcing men to drink from a bottle and stealing their semen but no arrests have been made. Constable Mncedi Mbombo said, “They then forced him to drink an unknown substance from a bottle. This got him aroused quickly even though he was still scared and didn’t want to have sex. “This is really confusing to us because we have never heard of such a thing before. The man was fully conscious throughout his ordeal and he is still traumatized.” Police have now opened a rape investigation. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (UPI) Police in Florida said a man fell 30 feet into Tampa Bay while he was attempting to change a tire on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The St. Petersburg Police Department said Reginald White, 43, of Bradenton, was driving a sport-utility vehicle Sunday night

with two passengers when a tire blew out on the bridge around 9:20 p.m. Police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez said White was attempting to change the tire and tripped over the thigh-high wall when he walked backward to avoid traffic. He was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

crashed through the fence and ended up in John McNamara’s swimming pool. McNamara said he was in the kitchen with his wife when they heard the commotion in the yard. “I just had open heart surgery in January,” McNamara told WTVD-TV. “I said, ‘I’m gonna have another heart attack here.’” Michael Smith suffered a few cuts to his head. Ruth Smith and Caroline were not injured. The Dodge was totaled. “I hate that it happened to [McNamara’s] pool, but I think that it might have saved our lives,” Michael Smith said.

ERWIN, N.C. (UPI) - A North Carolina couple whose pickup truck crashed into a swimming pool said their black lab was responsible for putting pressure on the gas pedal. Mike and Ruth Smith said their dog, Caroline, was riding with them on a trip to the grocery store in their 1988 Dodge pickup Friday when something spooked her. “When she gets scared she will go down on the floorboard of the truck,” Mike Smith told WRAL-TV. Smith said Caroline chose the driver’s side floor on this occasion and put all 90 pounds of her weight on the gas pedal. He said he was unable to pull the dog up from the floor and Ruth Smith, who was driving, aimed the vehicle for a wooden fence in the hopes of stopping the truck. The pickup

LAS VEGAS - Clark County has charged 34-year-old Joseph Oberhansley with murder and abuse of a corpse in the death of 46-year-old Tammy Jo Blanton in September. According to court documents, Oberhansley told police he broke into Blanton’s home and killed and mutilated her, then ate her heart and parts of her brain and lung. That’s right; real, live Hannibal Lecter shit. And if you think this story couldn’t possible get any worse, Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull just recently asked for a rape charge to be added. In Indiana, aggravated circumstances needed for a jury to consider the death penalty include rape, burglary and dismemberment.

Spies and Lies CIA agents and others who work with classified information shouldn’t leak that information to the media. Jeffrey Sterling learned that this week. The former CIA agent, who was convicted of sharing classified information with a New York Times reporter, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. Though the sentence was a good bit shorter than some expected, it was also completely arbit r a r y … …Sterling’s lawyers successfully argued that the judge should not abide by sentencing guidelines calling for a sentence of 19 to 24 years behind bars. But former CIA Director General David Petraeus was sentenced to only two years on probation and a $100,000 fine for sharing classified information with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. Oh… and he also had an extramarital affair with Ms. Broadwell. Like I said… completely arbitrary… …In other news, Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist Seymour Hersh was in the headlines this week with a compelling story about how everything we’ve been told about the killing of Osama bin Laden is bovine fecal matter. Hersh’s detailed article in The London Review of Books (of all places) details how senior members of the Pakistani intelligence community gave up the Al Qaeda leader in exchange for the resumption and expansion of U.S. military aid… and almost $25 million in cold hard cash…

they agreed to let the Americans “find” him. On the night of the attack, says Hersh, ISI assets evacuated the compound where the terrorist leader was kept and basically let our Navy SEALs walk in and execute him. There was no “aha” moment of discovery as depicted in the movie “Zero Dark Thirty.” There was no major firefight, only token resistance by one bodyguard… whose unarmed wife was collateral damage in the raid. “The most blatant lie,” Hersh writes, “was that Pakistan’s two most senior military leaders — General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, chief of the army staff, and General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, director-general of the ISI — were never informed of the U.S. mission.” There were lots of other lies, according to Hersh…

is almost entirely propped up by information and quotes from anonymous sources. Understandably. We know what happens to those caught divulging classified information to reporters and biographers, right? They face arbitrary sentences depending on their rank and connections. I have a hard time being an absolutist when it comes to divulging classified information these days. As a military brat whose father had a top-secret security clearance, I was raised to think that those who divulge military secrets are traitors who should be shot or imprisoned for life. As an American adult who knows that our government lies to us whenever it is convenient, I think

…We were told that bin Laden’s body was handled according to proper Muslim customs and then given a secretive burial at sea. Hersh’s sources claim the terrorist was cut to pieces by rifle fire from several SEALs and those pieces were dropped in the Hindu kush by the special operators. Hersh alleges that the raid would never have gone public if one of the SEALs’ choppers hadn’t broken down inside the compound. Apparently, the original plan called for the commando team to extricate the body and later claim that bin Laden had been killed in a drone strike. The Pakistani military and intelligence assets who sold out OBL were most concerned that they not be found out. They didn’t want to face retribution from the Saudis who had paid ISI to keep an eye on the terrorist leader…

…According to Hersh’s reporting, Pakistan’s ISI had kept bin Laden under house arrest in Abbottabad for five years before …Here’s the thing. Hersh’s article ENIGMA

some leakers and whistleblowers are patriots. I’m inclined to believe that we were sold a fairytale about Osama bin Laden’s discovery and death. President Obama’s re-election campaign got a huge benefit from that big “win” and the SEALs spun a simple hit job into a more glamorous story of special ops bravado… … In some instances… CIA agents and others who work with classified information should leak that information to the media. It takes a paradoxical kind of bravery to break the law and bring the truth to light when we’ve all been lied to…

The opener and co-headliner of the tour was Jeff Beck. The legendary guitarist is a household name amongst music lovers but many besides his time with the Yardbirds don’t realize his impact on classic, alternative and today’s music. While a lot of his work is instrumental he has recorded with the likes if Mick Jagger, Morrissey, Roger Waters and Stevie Wonder just to rattle off a few names.
