Should We Hope To Die At A Particular Age? My inspiration for this article came after watching a couple on TV, each 99 years old, and married for 81 years. They had some physical problems, but appeared mentally sound with a good sense of humor and clearly very, very fond of each other. And yes, I think they're still "living a vibrant life." Oh, how much they would have missed if their lives had been drastically shortened! The story of the elderly couple reminded me of an interesting article I had read a while back titled, "Why I hope to Die at 75." It was written by Dr. Ezekiel
(Zeke) Emanuel. I had pondered a few things in the piece, i.e.,"... increases in longevity have been achieved mainly by extending the lives of people over 60. Rather than saving more young people, we are stretching out old age." I wondered if that could mean that the young who are ill are being neglected, unattended, or abandoned in favor of treatment for those 60 years and older? That doesn't seem likely; if that were the case, wouldn't there be definitive information coming from multiple sources?

hand, arm, foot, leg, and back. During my lengthy recovery process, an Orthopedic Surgeon suggested that I could reduce some of the pain and maladies associated with my injuries by taking daily walks, a minimum of five days a week. I followed the doctor's advice and over the years have continued the practice of walking on a regular basis. Few things can interfere with my daily walks. We know that dispensing pills by doctors as if they're M&Ms isn't always the answer. It's been my experience to know senior citizens who are overmedicated, some tell me they take as many as 12 or 15 pills per day. Is that really necessary? It can, of course, cause them to be disoriented, incoherent, and often unable to function. Perhaps prescribing a walk, a good book, meditation, or just a hobby, could be a more effective remedy for some ailments than so many pills. One good reason for exercising and eating a healthy diet, it seems to me, is that it might help with the obesity problem in the United States. Information from the CDC indicates that one-third of adults are obese-that's about 78.6 million people, and obesity-related medical costs in 2014 were $147 billion, with the numbers increasing annually. Billions of healthcare dollars would be saved if the colossal tide of obesity could be stopped.
Those costs may be more onerous than potential needs for the estimated 20.5 million in the U.S. who are 75 and older.

And there are millions over 75 who do not fit into the categories previously mentioned, but shouldn't be called 'ordinary' because that might tend to diminish them, and minimize their accomplishments, their self-worth. But they, too, have done their part in working hard and contributing to society. They are carpenters, plumbers, truck drivers, sales people, farmers, accountants, librarians, and the list goes on and on. They deserve respect, regard, and appreciation for what they've contributed to their families, their homes, their work, and all of society. They're now in a privileged position, and should be esteemed and honored. They are fine examples of elderly men and women who are ablebodied, hale and hearty, with an accumulation of knowledge, insight, sageness, and common sense. On the subject of those who might want to die at a certain age, I do feel strongly about extraordinary measures being utilized in order to prolong life when there is no chance for recovery. I am adamantly opposed to that, and think that an Advance Directive is an extremely important document, and not only for the elderly

WHAT IS INSOLVENCY? INSOLVENCY VS BANKRUPTCY The concept of "insolvency" is many times used interchangeably with the concept of "bankruptcy." Both terms carry the same basic concept of no longer being able to repay one's debts. Although it may be "splitting hairs," there is a slight distinction between these two terms. "Insolvent" almost always simply means that an individual can no longer pay ongoing debts and obligations. A look at the word's Latin origin reveals its simple meaning: it comes from the Latin words in "not" and solventem "paying." Insolvent simply means that you can no longer pay your debts. It does have other definitions, such as your liabilities exceeding your assets. But, these other definitions always

Generally, if a person or entity is "bankrupt" or declares bankruptcy, they have exhausted all other reasonable remedies for repairing the economic situation. Their economic system is either crashing or will crash in the future. The economic situation is close to impossible: the table (or bench) in where they conduct their business is "broken." They need something to repair the "table" where they conduct their finances.
In conclusion, insolvency and bankruptcy are very similar: they are both situations where debts can no longer be repaid. However, insolvency refers more to the current condition of entity or person. Bankruptcy refers more to a permanent condition: a total breakdown of the financial system. If the system is broken A person or entity could be (bankrupt), then no regular "insolvent" at some time course of action can repair it. NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (UPI) - A Massachusetts police department has a message for citizens: “Chasing bears through the woods drunk with a dull hatchet is strongly not advised.” The North Adams Police Department said in a Facebook post the incident “really did happen” Monday and “the hatchet man was taken into protective custody due to his incapacitation from the consumption of alcoholic beverage.” “The North Adams Police Department is urging everyone to NOT chase bears
through the woods with a dull hatchet, drunk,” the post said. The post urged residents to steer clear of bears rather than “going all Davy Crockett chasing it through the woods drunk with a dull hatchet. It is just a bad idea and not going to end well.” Police said they are still working to determine what the man’s planned “end game” was if he had caught up to the animal. CLEARWATER, Fla. inside while the workers got coffee. Rob Carpenter, a customer at the Dunkin’ Donuts store in New Port Richey, took video when he saw the hearse parked unattended in the store’s parking lot with a flag-draped casket inside. Carpenter shared the video with the Veteran Warriors group on Facebook, which brought the video to the attention of Jim Rudolph, president of Clearwaterbased Veterans Funeral Care. Rudolph said two employees, a driver and a licensed funeral director, were transporting the body of Lt. Col. Jesse Coleman from Clearwater to Lecanto, a

nearly 90-mile distance, and they violated protocol when they went into Dunkin’ Donuts to buy coffee. Rudolph said at least one employee is supposed to remain with the hearse at all times during restroom breaks, and procedure for veterans’ funerals stipulates no stops are to be made at all. “When a car leaves the funeral home with a flag on it, it’s on a stage... and we’re in ceremony mode,” Rudolph told ABC News. “Going into buy a doughnut with a flagcovered casket in your coach was a terrible lack of judgment.”
Rudolph said both employees were fired. He said they were remorseful about the incident. “I think if they had the ability to turn back the day, they’d do things different,” Rudolph told WFTS-TV. Rudolph said he spoke with Coleman’s widow, who was forgiving toward the business and said she did not want the employees to be fired. However, Rudolph said he will not reverse his decision to terminate the employees. “What could they have been thinking?” Rudolph said. “I haven’t got the foggiest idea.” BETHLEHEM, PA - Over a period of about 18 months Barry Larson stole an estimated $30,000 worth of dog biscuits from the Purina pet food plant he worked for. So was he selling dog biscuits on the outside? Is there a black market for ‘hot’ pet food? And how was he getting all of those dog biscuits out of the plant anyway? It turns out he wasn’t. He was eating them. “We noticed a few months ago that something was wrong with our dog biscuit production,” said Purina spokesman, Keith Schopp. “When we checked the quantity of ingredients that were used in the production and the number of biscuits that were produced, the numbers just didn’t add up! We began installing more security cameras at various strategic locations throughout the factory, and we were finally able to identify the problem. Mr. Larson, who worked in the quality check sector, was eating almost half of the biscuits that went by him.” To account for the losses Mr. Larson must have ingested nearly 3,000 dog biscuits per day during his
work hours. But there was a good reason for his voraciousness. “Purina has provided us with hours of video evidence in which we see the suspect smoke drugs on his work site, and then eat hundreds of dog biscuits,” said Police Captain Brian Tobin. “The images are a little bit disturbing, but very conclusive in terms of evidence. We proceeded with Mr. Larson’s arrest this morning for 15 charges of petty theft, and found him to be in possession of 10 grams of cannabis.” Larson’s ex-girlfriend, Patricia Nelson, told a reporter that she was aware of his “addictions” to both cannabis and dog biscuits, and that she had actually left him when she had found out. “Every night, he came back from work with a really horrible breath,” she said. “One day, I came back from work earlier than usual, and surprised him with his mouth full of dog biscuits! I was so disgusted, that I packed my things and left.” CAMBERLEY, England (UPI) - An English man says a piece of a rubber toy that was lost 40 years ago came out of his nose during a sneezing fit. Steve Easton, 51, claims he was playing an Internet game at his home in Camberley when a sneezing fit prompted the emergence of the object from his nostril. Unsure of what he had found, Easton called his mother, 77-year-old Pat Easton, who told him what the object was — the end sucker piece on a toy rubber dart. Pat Easton said she had decades previously taken Steve, then 7 or 8 years old, to the hospital after he swallowed the toy, but X-rays were inconclusive. “All these years

later, it suddenly shot out,” she told the BBC. Steve Easton said his ability to breathe and blow his nose feels no different from before. “It’s the length of time,” he told the BBC. “I’m not the first person this has happened to, but 43 years — it’s quite out there isn’t it?” Easton said he carried the object around to show people who were interested in the story, but he has since disposed of it. In a somewhat similar episode in 2011, a man who was shot in the head during New Year’s Eve festivities in Naples, Italy, sneezed out a .22 caliber bullet as he waited to be seen by doctors. SHENZHEN, China (UPI) - Forget about thrill rides. How about a shrill ride? The Window of the World theme park in China has a new attraction that some are just dying to ride. It’s called Samadhi, and it’s designed to give riders the sensation of being dead, cremated, and reborn. First, the visitor goes on a journey through a “morgue.” Next, they are placed in a casket and put on a conveyor belt for “cremation” — which is simulated by a sudden blast of hot air over the rider to simulate flames. The air reaches temperatures up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The attraction also uses flashes of light to give the rider “an authentic experience of burning.” Finally, an image of a womb is projected onto the ceiling and riders must crawl until they reach a white, padded room — where they are “reborn.” Sound fun? The ride’s creators went to great lengths to make the experience as accurate as possible by visiting a real crematorium and lying inside the

incinerator. Window of the World is a cultural theme park instead of a regular amusement park. Other attractions featured there include replicas of France’s Eiffel Tower and its Arc de Triomphe. When many riders reach the end of the experience they are said to be drenched in sweat. Whether that’s a result of the heat — or being scared to death, is uncertain. BRANDON, FL - Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 50-year-old woman, charging her with robbing three Brandon banks in a span of 30 minutes earlier in the day. The spree started at 3:19 p.m. and ended at 3:43 p.m., deputies said. Cindy Carabeo was charged with three counts of armed robbery. Deputies said a female robber first entered the BB&T bank and handed a written note to a teller saying she had a firearm and wanted cash. She was given an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing the building. Sixteen minutes later, the same robber walked into the Wells Fargo bank and repeated the same tactic. She was given an undisclosed amount of cash and fled. Eight minutes after that, the same woman entered the Florida Central Credit Union and again handed the note to the teller saying she was armed and wanted money. Again, she walked out of the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash. Soon afterward, sheriff’s detectives pieced together enough information to identify the getaway car’s tag number and found it to be registered to Carabeo. Deputies converged on her apartment and arrested her as she drove into the complex.

Disaster Movies I’ve caught a couple of the trailers for “San Andreas” on television recently and it’s gotten me thinking about disaster movies. As you might suspect from the title, “San Andreas” is about what happens when California finally gets “the big one.” Small and moderate earthquakes are common on the left coast, but geologists have long predicted that a massive quake will eventually hit there. It’s not a matter of “if,” it’s a matter of “when.” The San Andreas fault runs 810 miles through Cali, forming the border between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. It is considered the most likely spot for “the big one” to happen. But I’ll get back to that… …Disaster movies really took off back in the 1970s. Producer Irwin Allen became known as the “master of disaster” after “The Poseidon Adventure” and “The Towering Inferno” became blockbusters. But the musical/drama “San Francisco,” which depicted the epic earthquake of 1906, was the top-grossing movie of 1936. We’ve always had a fascination with disasters... …If “disaster movies” is its own genre, then it is filled with subgenres. Films such as “The Towering Inferno” and “The Posiedon Adventure” focus on technology gone horribly wrong. In both, a small group of plucky survivors overcome numerous hurdles to survive. This a common plot device in disaster movies. By highlighting the survivors, disaster flicks allow us to remain blissfully unaware of the body count… …”San Andreas” looks like it has a pretty huge body count. In the trailer, several skyscrapers tumble to the ground in glorious slow-
motion. A massive tidal wave is shown closing in on SanFran’s Golden Gate Bridge. An ocean liner tumbles helplessly into a coastal city. In each instance, thousands of people are perishing. But they are tiny and fictional, so we are allowed to sit back and enjoy the sheer magnificence of the special effects… …Our willful ignorance of those human costs is part of the suspension of disbelief that makes disaster movies such a welcome escape. No matter how bad our so-called “real lives” are, we can take some solace in knowing that things are much worse for those whose final moments are hidden deep inside the details we never see…
“disaster flicks.” For me, aliens pretty much destroy the element of plausibility that helps a good disaster movie reach down into that place where our darkest fears live… …There are those who think that plausibility is highly overrated. They inject comedic unbelievability right into their films’ premises. “Anaconda” was one of the first and best examples of this. But “Sharknado” redefined parody in the disaster film realm. Tornadoes. Filled with sharks. Coming right at you! It’s a gloriously cheesy plotline. Nineties washouts Tara Reid and Ian Ziering starred in two “Sharknado” epics so far. And there’s apparently a third one on the way...
…A disaster movie’s ability to suspend our disbelief depends a good bit on the plausibility of its premise. As someone who went to high school in Southwest Oklahoma, the tornadic chaos of “Twister” seemed a lot more real to me than it would to someone in Seattle. “San Andreas” will generate much more fear with Californians than it does with Tennesseeans. By throwing in a science-fiction element, films such as “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” allow us to feel tension without severely worrying that a giant asteroid is going to hit the Earth. (I mean… sure… it could… but what could we do about it anyway?) I thought “The Day After Tomorrow” did a good job of depicting what might happen in the event of a rapid climate change. (If you’re one of those morons who thinks there can’t be any such thing as “global warming” because it still gets cold and snows, then your level of disbelief might be beyond suspension with that movie.) I don’t really count alien invasion movies as being ENIGMA

…Back to “San Andreas.” From the trailers I’ve seen, it looks like a darned good disaster movie. The special effects are spectacular. There may be close-ups of unfortunate victims leaving this mortal coil, but they didn’t show any. I’d rather retain my blissful ignorance. Dewayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as the pilot of a search-and-rescue helicopter who (surprise!) gets to do a lot of searching and rescuing. All in all, “San Andreas” looks like escapist fun. Unless you live in Los Angeles or San Francisco. But maybe a fictional earthquake will help Californians forget the fact that they are almost out of water…

Oh Dave, Where Has the Time Gone? I remember seeing Letterman’s daytime show and wasn’t so sure of this. I was a late night TV junkie. Unlike most kids I had no curfew as to when to go to bed. I often stayed up late and learned a whole lot more of the world that way. I enjoyed Johnny Carson most of the time. Some of the stuff got boring at times. Sometimes if I couldn’t get to sleep I would watch “Tomorrow” with Tom Snyder. I thought Snyder was kind of stuffy and not that interesting except on occasion. One of my favorite segments was when he had KISS on during the height of their popularity. Gene and Paul were usually the mouthpieces for the band. Not this night. Ace was wound up and all talkative and laughing and Snyder was enjoying the conversation. The
Oh Dave, where has the time gone? As I watch the final episode of The Lat Show with David Letterman tonight I will see yet another part of my youth die.
Yep, I’m one of the folks who watched the first awkward episode. I watched intently and a little bored that night, but I saw that Bill Murray was going to be a guest. And yes, I’ve been a Bill Murray fan than most of you probably have been alive. Way before the Millennials adopted him s one of their own and
became a pop culture icon.
I can proudly say I watched the first ever episode of “Late Night” back in February of 1982. I remember that day well. I was a freshman in college and my best friend and I went that evening to a movie. We were rebels back then going to the movies on a weeknight. Coming home I asked him what he was doing when he got home and he said he was going to watch this new late night show being hosted by David Letterman after Carson. ENIGMA

camera kept cutting away to Gene who had this terse look on his face and would occasionally butt in on Ace and give a curt answer showing obvious distain that Ace was stealing the show. Other than that I would ultimately fall asleep watching “Tomorrow”. My late night viewing habits taught me of famous people when they died as often there was a special on late at night and an extensive feature on celebrities and famous athletes who died like Harold Lloyd, Mary Pickford, Jackie Robinson and more. I decided I wanted to be one of the cool kids and watch the very first show of “Late Night with David Letterman”. Being an SNL fan and a fan of the movies like “Caddyshack”, “Stripes” and

Letterman, as a bit of a relic but David Letterman redefined late for the 1980s when it all started night television. Prior to his arrival most late night shows were formal celebrity interviews and poorly veiled promotions. Sure, Carson had Carnac and a few other characters but so did every talk show host before him. Rarely would he ever push the proverbial envelope or leave himself open to be laughed at and look awkward. Letterman was kind of like the everyday kind of guy. He was a little gawky, awkward and somewhat of a dork. He was the first host to hold no prisoners. Most talk show hosts up until that time could have had a career in movies or as a serious news anchor. Letterman was an everyday kind of guy. He was one of us.

Even more memorable was him throwing pens and other objects through the imaginary window behind his desk and the sometimes delayed sound effect of breaking glass. Characters like Larry “Bud” Melman went from total obscurity to pop culture fame. Chris Elliott was at his best when a part of Letterman as well. We also learned a lot more about Letterman during his CBS years. While at NBC he was very guarded about his life. He began letting viewers into his world.
When Letterman had open-heart surgery he talked openly about it and brought out the doctors and nurses that literally saved his life on stage to thank them. It was an emotional moment for everyone watching. There was the birth of his son Harry, the foiled attempt to kidnap Harry, and the scheme to blackmail him for having an affair with one of his subordinates.
Instead of letting it become tabloid fodder, Letterman addressed it directly to his audience and told them what had happened and asked for forgiveness from his wife and fans and everyStill funny but more conservative one who was affected by his ditional dark suit and dress shoes. About David Letterman… I also loved that Letterman let everyone know when he was pissed. NFL Hall of Famer and Fox Sports anchor Terry Bradshaw was a guest on Letterman about ten years ago. It was an awkward interview. It was hard to tell if the tension was real or part of an act. Bradshaw started egging Letterman on and then reached across the desk and jokingly slapped him across the face. The look on Letterman’s face after this was priceless. He then said, “Let’s go to commercial.” When the show came back Bradshaw was gone and was never a guest again. This was very reminiscent of Elvis Costello’s performance of “Radio, Radio” on SNL that got him banned for close to a quarter century. Over the last 33 years David Letterman and I have gone ENIGMA
