JEONGEUP, South Korea (UPI) - A South Korean teacher is facing child abuse charges for allegedly eating a live hamster in front of his students to teach them “how dear life is,” police said. Police said the 44-year-old teacher, identified by the surname Yu, allegedly chewed a live hamster and swallowed it May 11 at the boarding school in Jeongeup while seven children were present. Yu, who also allegedly used abusive language in front of the students,

allegedly told police he had caught students abusing hamsters and wanted to teach them “how dear life is” by making them watch him eat one of the rodents. Police said Yu left the facility after complaints from colleagues and he was arrested after parents of the students contacted authorities. Yu was charged with child abuse and released from custody, police said. The teacher publicly apologized to the children and their parents. “I couldn’t control the situation and couldn’t stand it,” he told Yonhap News. “While

tion order brought a stuffed owl with “law degrees from Yale, Harvard and Stanford” to court as his public defender. Charles Abbott of Aspen, who was accused of violating a protection order taken out by his former roommate, Michael Stranahan, placed the stuffed owl on the table in front of him during his Tuesday appearance in Pitkin County Court Judge Erin Fernandez-Ely’s courtroom. “He’s a very sensitive guy, has law degrees from Yale, Harvard and Stanford,” Abbott said. “I think he’ll be able to represent me before a public defender comes online.” Abbott allegedly violated the protection order by going to Stranahan’s home to retrieve his belongings. Stranahan, who said he was out of town when Abbott went to the home, accused Abbott of taking some of his property. FernandezEly ignored the owl, which Abbott dubbed “Solomon,” and asked Stranahan if he would be willing to amend the protection order to allow for mediation. “I want it to remain in place because I don’t feel safe about being in close proximity to Charles Abbott,” Stranahan said.

CINCINNATI, OH - A group of males with swords robbed two different pizza delivery men over the weekend at the same address in Spring Grove Village neighborhood of Cincinnati, according to police reports. The first man was delivering for Domino’s on Saturday night when four males with swords approached him, police said. One suspect held a sword to the man’s throat and took money from his pockets. The attackers fled on bicycles. In a separate incident, another man encountered a group of three swordwielding males Sunday night while delivering pizza for LaRosa’s. While investigating that robbery, police were told by a neighbor that several of his swords were recently stolen from his home. Earlier this week police arrested a suspect in connection with the two incidents. The arrest was at the suspect’s grandmother’s home, said Lt. Dan Ogilvie. The house is also where the robberies occurred. Considering the brilliance of the cunning plan it is not surprising that the suspect is 13- CHARLOTTE, N.C. (UPI) - Travelers years-old. We have an international space station, self-driving cars and virtual reality sex. It is incredible that there are still places in the world where people are murdered for being a witch! woman known as “Misila” was one of four women who were accused in January after a measles epidemic killed several people in a remote village. These remote highlanders have very old, ancestral beliefs that sickness and death are the result of spiritual beings that live inside of some people, mostly women and their children. After the measles outbreak the villagers hired a “witchfinder” to identify the believed source of the measles outbreak. Some missionaries went to the village to prevent an angry mob from hurting the women after the witch-finder identified them. But apparently after the mob dispersed a smaller group of men found Misila and attacked her with axes while she was with her family. Personally, I think it would have been more merciful to build a bridge out of her. Amazingly, as recently as 2 years ago Papua New Guinea allowed the “sorcery defense” which allowed people accused of murder or serious assault to rely on a victim’s practice of sorcery as a defense. Obviously there are still some areas where the people don’t care about the repeal of this law. Belief in black magic is widespread in the Commonwealth nation, where unexplained deaths can often lead to accusations of sorcery, typically against women.

BORN IN ISRAEL, ROY HAD YOUR AVERAGE BEGINNING. THEN, AS IF THE CONFUSION OF HIS ROOTS WOULDN'T EVENTUALLY TURN THIS LITTLE BOY INTO A SKEWED MAN, HIS PARENTS PULLED A MEAN TRICK... THEY DECIDED TO RAISE HIM IN KENTUCKY. WHETHER IT'S MAKING FUN OF HIS HEIGHT (5'2”), TACKLING PERSONAL ISSUES, SLAMMING AN ANALYTICAL MAGNIFYING GLASS ON WORLD EVENTS AND SOCIETY IN GENERAL, OR SHARING A STORY FROM HIS TRAVELS - ROY'S COMEDY IS LIVE, DIRECT, AND BRUTALLY HONEST.

JUNE 19 & 20

JAMES GREGORY

CLEAN COMEDY THAT’S APPEALING TO EVERYONE 18 TO 80. PERFORMING IN CHATTANOOGA FOR OVER 26 YEARS, MORE THAN ANY OTHER ENTERTAINER, JAMES LOVES CHATTANOOGA AND CHATTANOOGA LOVES HIM. THAT’S WHY HE’S MADE THE COMEDY CATCH HIS SECOND HOME. JAMES DOES NOT “TIP-TOE” THROUGH LIFE AS IF HE’S WALKING ON BROKEN GLASS OR EGG SHELLS. THAT STYLE IS EVIDENT ON STAGE AS WELL. HE IS NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT. MUCH OF HIS HUMOR IS CENTERED ON BRILLIANT OBSERVATIONS OF CRAZY RELATIVES AND PEOPLE OBSESSED WITH THE SLIGHTEST CHANGE IN WEATHER CONDITIONS - NOW REFERRED TO AS GLOBAL WARMING. HE DELIGHTS IN POKING FUN AT MODERN SENSITIVE PARENTS AND OUT-OF-CONTROL ENVIRONMENTALISTS. GREGORY HAS BEEN QUOTED AS SAYING, “IF YOU WANT ME TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT ENDANGERED SPECIES, YOU NEED TO CONVINCE ME THAT WE’RE ABOUT OUT OF CHICKENS.”

JUNE 26-28

MATT MITCHELL

MATT MITCHELL IS A PURE SOUTHERN MASH BOOGIE COMEDIAN FROM ALABAMA WITH BAREFEET, MUSHMOUTHED DRAWLING AND A MILE-WIDE SOCIAL STREAK. KINDA LIKE LYNYRD SKYNYRD AS A STAND-UP COMIC... ONLY FATTER. MATT GOT HIS START AS THE "CASIO KID" ON THE NATIONALLY SYNDICATED RICK AND BUBBA RADIO SHOW. AFTER HIS HIT REALITY TV SHOW, "THE FATCHELOR" ROCKED THE AIRWAVES OF THE TURNER SOUTH CHANNEL HE LOADED UP THE TRUCK AND MOVE TO BEVERLY... HILLS THAT IS.... WAIT... ACTUALLY IT WAS HOLLYWOOD. MATT HAS SINCE BEEN SEEN ON THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO, MTV AND LAST COMIC STANDING, ALONG WITH NUMEROUS COMMERCIALS AND MUSIC VIDEOS.

Annoyances If you’re old enough to remember Andy Rooney’s grumblings on “60 Minutes,” you’ll understand the tone of this week’s column. If you read my writings many years ago, you’ll know this is not my first mention of Mr. Rooney. In any event… the subsequent ramblings are candid attempts at axe-grinding and venting… …Chattanooga is in the “final four” in “Outside” magazine’s “best towns” competition. Our scenic city is facing Eau Claire, Wisconsin in the contest’s semifinal. If Chattanooga wins, we face either Port Angeles, Washingon, or Bar Harbor, Maine, the other two semifinalists… …Here’s what chaps my ass. There is no real value to such internet “competitions.” The town that can get the most people to click for it wins. That doesn’t make a town the “best” at anything other than clicking. And frankly, we don’t really need any more crazy, non-factual circle-juking…

…This recent Memorial Day brought out the usual assortment of emotions. I’ve always thought that one should put politics aside on that day and honor those who gave their all in the service of our country. Some of my social media mates decided that Memorial Day was a good time to protest certain military policies. Others vehemently disagreed on the timing of the rants. Personally, I think the best way to celebrate Memorial Day is to spend the other 364 days of the year trying to keep politicians from throwing more American lives into ill-advised military conflicts. “Hawkish” GOP pols can bark all they want about us needing “boots on the ground” in our fight against ISIS, but it’s never their (or their kids’) boots that would be hitting the ground… …Others have said more (and better) about the end of David Letterman’s career, but I want to chime in. No one ever did what

ENIGMA

he did. He was a tireless champion of independent musicians. He was a cultural icon. I said this when Johnny Carson retired and I’ll say it again: There won’t be another one like him. Ever. So here’s what has chapped my ass about the Letterman career narrative. People make a big deal about how Letterman “lost” to Jay Leno. That’s bovine fecal matter. Leno captured the bigger ratings, but he did it with lowbrow pandering to the middle. Letterman elevated the talk show genre…

what’s going on in that part of the world? When do we stop throwing American lives and American dollars at a fight that we helped create and can’t end? It’s insanity… …It’s the 35th anniversary of CNN. Ted Turner’s Cable News Network redefined broadcast news at its inception. CNN’s coverage of the assassination attempt on President Reagan was the moment that I realized the game had changed in television news coverage. CNN had an unprecedented ability to throw reporters and cameras at major world events. Today’s CNN is watered down. Too many regular “shows.” No one tops CNN when there’s a major breaking national or international story. I just think they should stick to what they’re good at and cut back on the packaged programming. Even Anthony Bourdain and Mike Rowe are boring on CNN…

…Geopolitically, the muddy situation in and around Iraq just keeps getting muddier. Our senior military leaders are criticizing the Iraqi army’s willingness to fight against ISIS while Iran is aggressively battling “the Islamic State.” We’re negotiating a nuclear arms treaty with Iran. The Saudis funded 9/11. Who are our enemies in that neck of the woods? Who are our allies? When are we going to admit that — Mark Bedford we really don’t have a clue about

Memorial Day: Why It Has A New Meaning For Me

As I watched news footage of the President laying a wreath at the Tomb Of the Unknowns, Boy Scouts planting flags on the graves of veterans, the somber playing of Taps over military cemeteries and the volleys of blank gunfire from 21 gun salutes I felt different from previous years .I thought that this year I may have actually realized what Memorial Day is meant to recognize.

Memorial Day was supposed to observe but as a high school student I still didn’t understand what this day really stood for. I was on an Honor Guard detail where we went to the graveside services of veterans and fired a twenty-one gun salute. I do remember the widows and family always thanking us for performing this service. That was probably the closest I came to really understanding the feeling of honorI am son of a veteran whose ing the military dead. service was not during wartime. Police Department and many police officers have to work holidays. Some of my fellow officers who were veterans passed away and had military funerals and I felt some of the respect and honor on those days that I should have been feeling every Memorial Day. When I attended the funeral of a Vietnam Vet who had been Missing In Action for over thirty years and his remains only recently discovered and identified I almost grasped what the families of these people went through. This man’s mother had grieved for years then died not knowing what had happened to her son or being able to lay him to rest. The incident that really jolted me into being aware of what Memorial Day is for occurred recently when one of my Handgun Permit Class pupils

and I started talking after the class. I had mentioned that I had been the Sniper Team Leader for the Chattanooga Police Swat Team. This must have struck a common chord with this young man who disclosed to that me he had been a Marine sniper and was badly wounded in an ambush in either Iraq or Afghanistan. Two or three of his sniper team were killed. I was so surprised by his story that I did not get the exact details and did not want to interrupt him as the story just seemed to flow out of him like some type of cathartic release. He showed me a bracelet he wears in memory of his fallen teammates. He spoke fondly of them and smiled while he remembered his lost friends. I listened for a long time as he related stories of missions

over there and the long recovery from his physical and mental injuries. He said he remembers his fallen friends every day. This really brought home to me what Memorial Day is really about. Sadly many people just think of Memorial Day as a holiday, a day off, the last day of a long weekend. It is far more than that. Memorial Day is “ observed as a legal holiday ...in remembrance of war dead” according to Webster’s Dictionary. That’s a pretty sterile, unfeeling definition but it does describe what this day was instituted for. There are many memorial ceremonies conducted on Memorial Day. Most are held at military cemeteries such as Arlington National Cemetery or locally here at the National

Cemetery. Here mothers and fathers who have lost sons, wives and husbands who have lost spouses or partners, children who have lost a parent or military buddies, who have often formed a bond as strong or stronger than any family, attend to remember their fallen military family member or friend .If you can’t attend on of these at least pause to remember what this day really is meant for: to honor the fallen. Please don’t forget to also remember and honor our living veterans. Many veterans are suffering from injuries that are visible. Many suffer from unseen physical and mental injuries. We owe them all.

Bear with me. I have given the subject a lot of thought and I think I have reached a realization I should share with everyone in this little burg. Here it is. There is a change that hits us all in the Chattanooga metro area as we age. It is not gender specific, hitting males and females alike – but it does seem related to age. After suffering through some of the more common symptoms – weight gain, mood swings, and increased irritability – I had to accept that the Change had hit me and now I actually WANTED to see some of the bands at Riverbend.

Are We Witnessing America's Collapse? I'm not a Republican, I'm not a Democrat; I am, and have been for many years, an American Independent. For the record, I am a female, Christian, senior citizen. Is it possible that politicians are being duplicitous, and are not interested in what American citizens want or need, what we hope for? Where do their interests lie? I think there should be less friction, distrust, acrimony and anger among political parties. After all, they are representing the citizens of the United States. There is too much rancor and discord. One politician who is my hero is Senator Jeff Sessions. I agree with his statement that "The World Has Turned Upside Down." He has expressed reluctance to accept many of the actions among politicians. But he contends that, "the citizens of this

that many of those who are in the country without proper certification are sending significant amounts of money back to their home countries annually. There are citizens who resent that and suggest it does nothing to help America's economy. There is much too much corruption, fraudulent activity, and heinous crimes that are occurring daily. Everyone becomes aware of it almost instantly with 24-hour cable news, the internet, and social media. There are protests, turmoil, lawlessness, and riots. Are the safety, support, and consideration of American citizens no longer priorities? We are now a country divided; there are those who are opposed to the changing culture, what they consider to be the perverse interpretation of their long-held beliefs. to do with the touchy subject of religion that has seen many changes in attitudes during the past few years. That treatment doesn't seem to always be in compliance with direct rulings from our Supreme Court.

Now we see our flag defiled, stamped upon, spit upon, and torn apart. The offenders are usually subjected to no consequences, unless a patriotic individual decides to try and stop them.

The legitimacy of same-sex marriage is an issue that is presently being considered by the Supreme Court. What their decision will be can impact all our lives. What will happen if one or the other side wins?

We have had a long history of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in our schools. Many schools have now discontinued that practice. And others have altered the original wording of that Pledge. Is that really necessary?

Are we no longer considered to be a Christian nation? Statements from various sources indicate that religion is passĂŠ, that it interferes with the agenda of those who lack religious beliefs. What has happened to 'majority rules'? At last count, 83 percent of American adults identified with Christianity. We've had so many instances of dissension, anger and hate among various groups who feel disenfranchised, unwelcome and without influence to change matters. Of course, most of us recognize that prejudice and racism still exists in America. But many of us believe that efforts are being made to correct those wrongs.

Many people feel that their religion prohibits them from accepting same-sex marriage as normal. They believe that marriage between a man and a woman is an edict from God, and they cannot agree to anything less.

Since our Flag became a national symbol, it has represented the fact that we are a new nation, the greatest constitutional republic the world has ever known, that we are free, that we are all equal, that we are courageous, that we are humane, caring and giving human beings. As Abraham Lincoln said in his Gettysburg Address speech in 1863, "A government of the people, by the people, for the people."

Do we have a right, an option to openly oppose any agenda from individuals whose beliefs and convictions differ from ours? Should those who oppose be attacked, either verbally or physically? Is it possible that in the future we will see brothers marrying sisters, fathers marrying daughters, individuals marrying multiple partners (polygamy)?

Why not? Already, we're becoming gender-neutral. Some businesses and schools are declaring bathrooms to be for both male and female; come one, come all. No doubt others will soon follow. The prefixes, Mr., Ms., and Mrs., which in the past have been used to represent our gender identity, appear to be going by the wayside. There are those who find it unnecessary, not politically correct. Are we obliged to accept the morals, values, ethics that have eroded to the point that even the most bizarre, obscene, indecent, and depraved conduct is becoming the norm. My hopes and prayers are that I will not live long enough to see further decline, decay, decadence, and perversion of what once could be described as the greatest country on earth.

Rush takes a Working Man look at its past

If there ever was a dream scenario for Rush fans to actually experience, this retrospective look at the remarkable musical past constructed by Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart over the last 40 years was the ideal situation to witness. Though this Canadian trio started with their latest woo rrkk AAnngg eellss , release, CC lloo cckk w and systematically worked backwards over the next three hours, the bulk of this show was built around the sweeping progressive rock standards they built their reputations on during a five album stretch from 1975 to 1978. This remarkable blast from the past reminded the sold-out Rush

devotees at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta, Georgia why they have religiously stayed committed to this truly remarkable three-piece act and gladly made them a part of their lives growing up.

Shaky Knees 2015 In only its third year Shaky Knees has build quite the cred amongst indie rock fans and music lovers alike. 2015 saw them shift venues again as the three-day festival took root behind the Atlanta Civic Center at Central Park, the location for the first generation of Music Midtown. The festival has grown every year since the first shindig at the Masquerade Music Park. The backdrop of midtown and the history of great music at the park lent itself to another fine showing as Shaky Knees is not only

drawing attention from locals but from around the world as well. A plethora of talent ascended the five stage festival affair with standard bearers like the Pixies and Strokes performing inspired sets as well as bands from “over the pond like the Kooks wining fans over. There was a little altcountry thrown into the mix as well as Ryan Adams and his new band was on hand as well as Old 97's. There was literally something there for everyone.
