Dear Rocco, I recently found out a girl I ha(ve)d feeling for may have slept with an ex-friend and former business partner with whom I don’t speak. They were never friends until about a year ago when she told me they had become friends and she would go swimming where he lived. For the first time I’ve know her (about 10 years) she was speaking glowingly of him like I had never heard her do or ever expected her to do to be honest. I had my suspicions especially because she always tends to go AWOL from me when she is either sleeping or dating someone and always calls me when it’s over and wants to “hang out” and tells me how much she misses me. Like an idiot I go out with her until the next one comes along and then she goes AWOL again. I talked recently to the guy’s father and he told me he thought they had been sleeping together. This pisses me off because first, she never gave me a fair chance of a relationship with her and because I am no longer friends with the guy and I’m sure he was laughing because he knew I had feelings for her. Politely holding a door open for a police officer has landed a Massachusetts man in jail. Authorities say Kayvon Mavaddat was at the Natick Mall when he held the door for the leaving officer. That officer thought Mavaddat looked familiar, and went to check his cruiser’s computer. The officer found there were three warrants out for his arrest. The officer returned to the mall and arrested Mavaddat. 28-year-old Mavaddat was held without bail at his arraignment when his probation officer told the judge he routinely skips court dates, court-ordered

There is minimum-security, and then there is why bother? Alaska State Troopers said a man who escaped from a minimum-security facility returned three hours later with an SUV to pick up some of his fellow inmates. Troopers said in a dispatch that Joshua Yaska, 20, was seen riding a bicycle away from Fairbanks’ North Star Center correctional facility about 1:05 a.m. Investigators said Yaska returned about 4:20 a.m. with an Isuzu SUV, which he used to transport an undisclosed number of his fellow inmates away from the facility. The halfway house holds up to 143 minimum-security inmates and staff are instructed not to physically restrain the inmates from leaving the building. Yaska was being housed at the North Star Center while awaiting trail for charges of misdemeanor theft and making a false report. Yaska remained on the loose as of Monday. A mother was arrested after her child fell unconscious when she sat on his head for one hour. In any other circumstance this would be nothing more than a kinky fetish story, but police in Georgia said the victim was the woman’s own 2year-old. 36-year-old Susan Elizabeth Kelley is accused of placing a towel on the seat of a wooden dining room chair before she put the child’s head on it. She then proceeded to sit on the child’s head with her full body weight for about one hour. She allegedly told authorities that she did so to get the child to be submissive. Again; she’s been watching too much fetish porn in the Internets. When the boy became unconscious, he was taken to a hospital. Doctors called police after seeing the boy with redness on the head, chest and back. He is expected to make a full recovery. They may not be the most practical, but Chileans definitely have a flair for the dramatic. This was demonstrated by one Chilean man who tried to commit suicide by lion. How do you do that? Well, first you have to find some lions. Any reasonable sized zoo will do. This particular man, Franco Luis Ferrada Roman, decided he had better be naked for this adventure, too. “We believe that this person entered as a visitor and paid for his ticket,” zoo director Alejandra Montalva said. “Later he trespassed into an area where the public are not normally allowed and we

understand that he forced the roof of the lion’s enclosure,” she said. “It was from there that he jumped, took off his clothes and started to attract the lions.” Once inside the lions began “playing” with him. Whether they were trying to kill him or not, they ended up mauling him badly. As there were no quick acting tranquilizers available at the time of the incident, zoo officials intervened and shot the lions dead in order to save the man’s life. Roman suvived but is in grave condition. Montalva told local media that she was “deeply affected” by the deaths of the two adult lions, one male and one female. Many on social media agreed with her, and expressed outrage that the lions were killed because of the selfish act of one man. What is it about climbing down a chimney that makes crazy people want to take their clothes off? Carrie Sapp said she was working the next morning at the Carroll Redemption Center in Carroll, Iowa when she heard a man yell for help from the chimney. She said the man tried to explain, “I was playing hide-and-seek with my cousin. Don’t call the cops.” But the police were called, as was the fire department, which eventually managed to free the soot-covered, naked man. Firefighters initially planned to use a rope to pull Jordan Kajewski from the chimney, but eventually opted to hammer a hole in it and pulled him out. Though naked, the 29-year-old Kajewski had his clothes with him. “This was definitely a first for the Carroll Fire Department,” Fire Chief Greg Schreck said. Kajewski was charged with trespassing. A television reporter was arrested on a charge of public urination or defecation after allegedly being seen defecating on a homeowner’s property, according to police in Arizona. The Goodyear Police Department said that they have arrested CBS reporter Jonathan Lowe, after being accused of pulling down his pants and defecating on a lawn that did not belong to him. According to the police investigation, while Lowe was reporting about a man who killed a dog in the neighborhood, he went onto a lawn and defecated. A passerby noticed what Lowe was doing and called the police. The officers approached Lowe, who told him that he had to do defecate and could not hold it in. ENIGMA

THERE IS A LOT MORE TO THE SOUTH AND PEOPLE NEED TO SEE THAT. FORWARD THINKING, CONSCIOUS SOUTHERNERS NEED TO HAVE A VOICE. THEY DON’T! NOT IN MEDIA, AT ALL, MUCH LESS IN COMEDY. WE’RE HERE TO CHANGE THAT.

The Killing of Harambe - Don’t Animal Lives Matter?

cized for this decision. I am going to wade in with my criticism. Now I must admit I do not have all the facts. I have not seen all the video of the event. I am an admitted animal lover and would consider myself a conservative animal rights activist. I was a SWAT Sniper and in that position was offered a strange and to me revolting off duty job. I was to be posted near the arena during circus performances with a high-powered rifle. The job was to shoot any elephant that “went rogue”. I declined the job. I was unsettled by the thought The zoo is being widely criti- of this duty. I felt sorry for the \In case you haven’t been watching the news lately or surfing the news if you get your news off the internet there was a recent incident at the Cincinnati zoo where a small child somehow fell into a moat around the gorilla enclosure there. A seventeenyear-old silverback gorilla named Harambe quickly grabbed the child and dragged the child several yards through the moat waters. After approximately TEN minutes the decision was made to execute Harambe. He was shot and killed.

captive elephants. So that being said upfront I do have some thoughts and opinions and questions on this killing. My first question is why after ten minutes was the gorilla shot? Was there a sudden change in his demeanor or actions that led zoo personnel to react? To myself and other people I’ve talked to plus people commenting on the video it looked as if the gorilla was in a protective posture. I saw a press conference by zoo personnel but didn’t see this addressed. If there was a change was it caused by the crowd reaction? The snippet of video I saw had a people screaming and yelling in the background. This area should have been cleared of nonessential personnel immediately. My years of SWAT / Hostage negotiation training tells me this. The next question, which I’m sure some people would rate as what should be the first question, is why wasn’t the gorilla tranquilized? Zoo spokespersons have stated that zoo personnel felt like the tranquilizer would take too long to take effect. I

recently watched a video of a lion being tranquilized back in the 1980’s and the tranquilizer worked pretty quickly. I’m sure there have been developments made in delivery systems and the actual drugs used in this procedure that it would’ve been worth a try. Then there is the question of how the child got into the area. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the child’s family sue the zoo for the “trauma” inflicted on the child. What was the mother of the child doing when this child crawled through an opening and fell into the moat? The zoo needs to address this issue but maybe if children are going to be taken into dangerous areas they may need to be tethered to the adult.

are similarities also. Thankfully this child lived but an intelligent endangered animal lost his life through no fault of his own. Obviously any enclosure where there are wild animals in zoo environments should be constructed so that no one can fall or jump in and nothing can be thrown in. If this takes overlapping plastic or lexan barriers then so be it. There is even the question of if these animals should be kept in captivity.

While I am not placing Harambe’s life above the child’s I still think this was a sad death which through prevention on both the part of the child’s mother and the zoo’s could have been prevented. Sadly as usual we humans have to learn from our mistakes which often have tragic results.

Zoos and wildlife viewing areas should run drills to In memory of Harambe practice where people have intentionally or accidentally - Mark Haskins come into contact with the

I personally think the mother should be charged with something. However, it has been reported that Cincinnati Police have stated there will be no charges. Recently here in this area a child got his mother’s handgun while inside her vehicle and shot and killed himself. She was criminally charged. Sure there are some differences but there

This is Cracker’s Soul Cracker is an American alternative rock band led by singer David Lowery and guitarist Johnny Hickman. The band is best known for its gold-selling 1993 album, Kerosene Hat, which includes the hit songs “Low” and “Euro-Trash Girl.” It’s hard to believe the band has been around a quarter of a century. Many of us cut our teeth on college radio to Lowery’s previous band Camper Van Beethoven and their infamous first single “Take the Skinheads Bowling” which helped cement Lowery as one of rock’s cynical with comic overtone lyricists. Combined with the welcoming warmth of Hickman’s guitar tones it’s no surprise they became radio favorites whose fan base has achieved cult status. Lowery took a break between lecturing at UGA on the business of music and touring this summer with Cracker to catch up. on consensus. In theory it looks good on paper and stuff like that. I always play that for my class because we always talk about objectivity and subjectivity. How can you tell if it’s good and blah, blah, blah. But you can tell what objectively what sounds the same, which is contriving. (laughs) Here’s the thing – we have kind of a mixed bucket with Cracker. We used to have individual ownership of radio stations spread all across the country. You would have individual music directors and programmers in each market making their choices to what they thought the audience wanted to hear. You had a lot more diversity and stuff. And then we had this mass consolidation. That was bad for a quirky band like Cracker in some ways. But in another way, though if you were in another band, especially like Cracker which could cross three or four radio formats – rock, classic rock, alternative rock, what have you. We’re played more on

the radio now that we have since the summer of ’94, which you could say is the peak of our experience. We’re played more on the radio now. We’re current on rock tracks. There are at least five of them getting played regularly. It’s bad for the diversity of radio but it’s good for us. People know our music.

What’s going on right now is we are in an industrial transition. Songwriters and performers’ music is consumed more now that it has at any given time before. People consume more music than they ever have. They listen to more music than they ever have, but the percentage of revenue that is flowing through to performers and songwriters is smaller than it has ever been. It’s an industrial transition and it’s not going to change unless people actually stand up and do something about it, you know? When they struck against the railroad, railroad strikers struck to get better pay. That’s actually all I can say about that stuff. I can’t actually talk specifically about any of that right now.”

- Dave Weinthal

Dave Mason Dave Mason is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist from Worcester, who first found fame with the rock band Traffic. Over the course of his career, Mason has played and recorded with many notable pop and rock musicians, including Paul McCartney, George Harrison, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Steve Winwood, Fleetwood Mac, Delaney Bramlett, and Cass Elliot. One of Mason’s best known songs is “Feelin’ Alright”, recorded by Traffic in 1968 and later by many other performers, including Joe Cocker, whose version of the song was a hit in 1969.

For Traffic, he also wrote “Hole in My Shoe”, a psychedelic pop song that became a hit in its own right. “We Just Disagree”, Mason’s 1977 solo US hit, written by Jim Krueger, has become a staple of US Classic Hits and Adult Contemporary radio playlists. Mason remains busy these days as he embarks on tour this summer with Journey and the Doobie Brothers.

American music and sell it back to Americans. I mean, we just learned it … all of contemporary music comes from this country: blues, gospel, jazz, country – it’s all from here. We just learned from what was coming out of here and put our own little twist on it probably and came up with some good stuff. Back when there was actually radio and DJs and back when there was actually somebody there, back in that time, we were all looking for something that was different instead of music that was the same, just more of the same stuff, which tends to be somewhat the way things are at the moment in some ways. Styx Remain Blue Collar Men Styx is a rock band plain and simple. If there ever was a doubt Tommy Shaw and James “JY” Young left no doubt recently at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park recently. It wasn’t always the case however. I’ve been a fan of the band since I was a kid as were the capacity house that was chock full of like-minded baby boomers. All their early stuff rocked with its guitar-driven sound and synthesizers and then they seemed to change a little with the times or go astray from what brought them initial fame as they “progressed” so to speak.

rock band with longer compositions and different stories being told. It was like there was a give and take between Shaw and the band’s lead singer and keyboard player Dennis DeYoung. My firs memories of DeYoung were video footage of him from the late eighties with this huge head of hair and a moustache that would have made Freddie Mercury either mad, jealous or proud depending on your perspective.

Songs of angst and struggles like “Blue Collar Man” and “Fooling Yourself” were all over the radio. Then came Paradise Theater. It wasn’t The band went through an era your typical rock album. But there was added incentive to buy the album compared to the eight-track or cassette – it had an etched hologram on side B. It was a hologram of the band’s name and logo. understand. I remember the anticipation for the show to begin and then sitting through an 11-minute movie before the part music/part theatrical event took place. It wasn’t my cup of tea to be honest I was just wanting to hear “Mr. Roboto” live after seeing the video dozens of times a week literally on MTV. That, for me pretty much ended my listening experience of Styx until a few years ago when the song was featured in the second season finale of the NBC action/comedy Chuck. Truth be told, the show used the song better in this episode than the band did back in the day.

Then came Kilroy Was Here right as MTV was at its nadir. Everybody in the world knows “Mr. Roboto” by heart even the most casual Styx listener. I remember seeing the tour. It was over-the-top and the Kilroy also ended Styx or at album was too conceptual for a least the classic lineup we had young kid like myself to truly become accustomed to since
