It Is Not Enough to BE a Christian I would say, it is not enough to be a Christian. We are called to be Christians but we are also called to do Christianity. This is a good place, I believe, to recall that being and doing are two different things. The Bible clearly points out, doing is on equal ground with being (James 2: 1426). We must live out, display, and share a life that exemplifies Christianity. The question is; what is that like? How do I do that? Oh yes, I know that the ultimate gift of Christianity is forever salvation, and for that, I am humbled and forever thankful. God and Jesus did their part but now "the ball is in our court," as they say. The question is; what do we do with it? What should Christians be doing between the "moment of salvation" until their "last living breath," here on earth? That, my friends, is a question that many have grappled with for more life style with you (as if I really years than I would like to think. knew it), only to help us (you In this short opportunity, I do and me) move beyond "talking." not expect to share the definitive Brighter, stronger, deeper minds

Pearcey. Francis wrote and published the book "How Shall We Now Live" in 1976 and Charles and Nancy wrote their book "How Now Shall We Live," over 20 years later. Both dealt with an evolving culture and environment and both suggested actions Christians' should take to demonstrate their beliefs. I just share with you their books and names because we need help, when it comes to acting out our Christianity, in a way that would/could have an impact on a non-Christian world. Early on Colson offered a metaphor for the Christian to ponder. He suggested that the oyster offers a good analogy to the thought pattern Christians should have as we think about how can we have a greater impact on the world? He says, "Oysters make their own shells, so if the shell is badly formed, the problem is not in the shell than mine have pondered this but in the oyster." question. deformed and decaying culture, the problem is not with the Christianity, it is with us. Thus a good question is; how shall we then/now live or in learning from the oyster, realizing that what we do builds the culture; what should the Christian be doing instead of talking?

In my search for some enlightenment, my lovely wife suggested I might find some help in Titus. Eureka! Some wonderful and practical instruction comes from Titus 2 and beyond. For instance, in Titus 2: 1-8, God says, "but as for you (that's us) speak the things that are fitting for sound doctrine. In other words: Don't As a pragmatist, Biblical instruc- talk nonsense! But back to Colson and Pearcey, as well as Shaeffer. What do they have to say about this issue of Acting Out Our Christianity? Well the Colson/Pearcey book is 491 pages long and interesting but a real slog to get through. There is a lot of good stuff there, but the book can really be condensed into their belief that Christianity represents a worldview (a lens, through which we can view the world). One that goes beyond John 3: 16 and an even private faith or personal salvation, to present a framework for understanding the world we live in and what is beyond. Schaeffer, on the other hand, wrote, in 1979, from a historical and philosophical standpoint that revealed the impact of such (history and philosophy) on humanity but, most importantly, Christianity. He wrote: I believe people are as they think. The choices we make in the next decade will mold irrevocably, the direction of our culture...

and the lives of our children. That is even more true today than it was in 1979. Maybe even to the point that I would say: Few of us really think today. We are so overwhelmed with information today that we just give up on thinking for ourselves and depend on others to think for us (notice here that thinking is different from talking, better but still not acting). Well, my friends, I do not believe that talking and thinking is what God intended when he made such an individual as you and I. I believe that he reached down and saved us for a purpose: To act out (live) the Christian life and impact the world, we live in, positively and Christ-like. In closing, please remember that talk is cheap and without action, its value approaches zero.

The Death of Terrorism plausible argument that merely watching a video of it qualifies as terrorism. Similar acts committed against a bad government like Iran and even real acts of terror, like assassinating scientists, are called "promoting freedom."

Terrorism is dead and we, the people, have killed it. No, not actual terrorism, "acts intended or calculated to provoke a state of terror in the general public, a group of persons, or particular persons for political purposes, on a daily basis." That's still going strong. I'm talking about the concept of terrorism, which has legitimately lost all meaning whatsoever. Terrorism; now defined as any act that a government finds inconvenient. Actually, check that, now defined as any act that a good government finds inconvenient. Take Edward Snowden for instance, when he leaked all of those classified government files, including the spygate papers, to the public, he was instantly

branded a terrorist by the US and British governments. In lieu of that, David Miranda's mere possession of documents obtained by Edward Snowden qualified as terrorism. Recently, the governments are now arguing that merely watching the video of James

We bitched on the internet, got medical marijuana cards, and played Grand Theft Auto. We never had a galvanizing moment, we have never had to sacrifice for our country. A lot of people said we had 9/11, true, but our president said, "I want everyone to go shopping," so we sacrificed our credit ratings. We are the generation that got everything it wanted, when it wanted it. There is practically no real terrorism anymore. In 2001, Osama bin Laden got lucky with the World Trade Center. Since then, in the past ten years, we had one guy who tried to light his shoes on fire, and another man tried to explode his underwear in first class. So, I guess Al Qaeda is outsourcing its bomb making to the Ringling Brothers now? And people go,

"What about the Times Square incident?" The Times Square incident was not a terrorist attack, it was a Jim Carrey movie. The "terrorist" locked the keys to his safe house in the car bomb, and I love that he locked the car bomb, did he not want someone getting his iPod? Then he left the keys to the car bomb hanging out of the tail gate. The car bomb was made from fertilizer that would not explode. For ten years, one decade, since September 11, 2001 we have been scared and I'm tired of it. I'm tired of being scared, I'm tired of shaming our freedoms. It is time for a revolution. The problem is no one seems to have the time. Everyone wants to have a revolution, but no one is willing to pack a lunch. Thomas Jefferson also said, "The tree of liberty needs to be fertilized from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." When I heard that I had to bleed, I thought "I'm game." I did my time on the front lines, I've stared into the real face of terrorism and shouted, "do your worst, for I shall do mine." What has everyone else done?

SEATTLE (UPI) - A Seattle couple said a burglar stole a pair of sunglasses from their car, but ignored something far more valuable — a $1 million winning Powerball ticket. The couple, who requested anonymity, said they forgot to check the numbers on their Powerball ticket after it failed to win the $350 million jackpot in February’s drawing. “We didn’t even think about a second chance prize,”

the couple told Washington’s Lottery officials. They said the ticket sat in their car for about three months. “Someone broke into our car a few weeks ago and stole a pair of sunglasses,” the couple said. “The stolen sunglasses were actually sitting atop the winning ticket. What a close call!” The couple checked the numbers on the ticket May 14 and discovered they had won a $1 million second chance prize. “Well, we already popped a bottle of champagne! We’re also planning a trip to Paris and

The Seattle Imam’s store that sold the ticket will receive a $10,000 selling bonus, the lottery said. The burglar, meanwhile, will have to make do with a pair of used sunglasses. BAMIYAL, India (UPI) - Indian police said they have detained a pigeon suspected of being a Pakistani spy after it was found to have a message stamped on its body. Punjab police said a 14-

year-old boy in Manwal, a village close to the Pakistani border, brought the pigeon to a police station when he noticed it bore a stamped message on its wing feathers written in Urdu, the official language of Pakistan, and a Pakistani phone number. The pigeon’s feathers also reportedly bore the seal of a Pakistani district in Pakistan’s Punjab province. Officers at the Bamiyal police post dubbed the bird a “suspected spy” in a diary

report. Police Superintendent Rakesh Kaushal said police conducted an X-ray of the white pigeon. “Nothing adverse has been found, but we have kept the bird in our custody,” Kaushal told The Times of India. “This is a rare instance of a bird from Pakistan being spotted here. (UPI) - An Illinois couple nearing their 60th wedding anniversary announced they have welcomed their 100th grandchild into the family. Leo and Ruth Zanger, Quincy residents who have been married for 59 years, said baby Jaxton Zanger, born April 8, marks their 46th great-grandchild and their overall 100th grandchild. The couple said they have 12 children, 53 grandchildren, 46 greatgrandchildren and one greatgreat-grandson. “We could start our own town,” Leo Zanger joked to the Quincy HeraldWhig. The couple said their large family is close-knit and most of them live in the Quincy area. They said family gatherings require a rented church hall and either 50 pounds of ham or 10 whole turkeys. “We enjoy all of the family get-togethers,” Leo Zanger said. The Zangers said they enjoy watching their family grow. “All the grandkids know us,” Ruth Zanger said.

CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA - There are friends, and there are friends. Then there are friends like Elijah Ray Lambert who will willingly shoot you in the chest. And with friends like those, who needs enemies? Lambert was friends with the late Miguel Martinez of Citrus Heights, California. Somewhere Miguel got hold of a bullet proof vest and decided he wanted to test it to see if it would really stop a bullet. But why put it on a mannequin or tie it to a tree when you can put it on yourself? As long as you have a friend like Lambert who is willing to pull a trigger for you. Deputies arrested Lambert for the shooting, but the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department has characterized the incident as an “unintentional killing”. Gao Bingguo, of Tai’an City, in the eastern province of Shandong, began the challenge early Monday, Sky News reported. The 55-year-old veteran beekeeper has cultivated bees for more than 30 years, and was stung multiple times before breaking the world record. Around 1.1 million bees at one point weighed down on Gao, the International Business Times reported. Weighing at 240 pounds, the bees shattered a previous record of 184 pounds - also set by a Chinese beekeeper in China’s inland Shaanxi province. Gao’s fellow beekeepers were dressed in military camouflage pantsuits as they prepared their colleague for the battle of his lifetime. Working together, they poured the pollinating insects onto his geared body. Queen bees came first, in order to attract more of the insects to fly and land on Gao’s protected head, arms and legs. Video footage showed Gao smoking a cigarette in a nonchalant manner, as thousands of bees swarmed over him then crawled over his seated body. cessfully breaks the record.” GOUVENOUR, NY - Now here’s a brain teaser if I ever heard one. Nine brains inexplicably appeared earlier this week along a street in a village in New York. How the brains got there and where they came from remains a mystery. Residents discovered the brains on a Street in Gouverneur and called the police. Gouverneur police collected one of the brains and brought it to a local veterinarian for an examination. The veterinarian determined the brain had been professionally removed — likely from a dog — and preserved in formaldehyde. The veterinarian said that the brain was consistent with a beaglesized brain and was in very good condition with no damage. But a chemistry professor at Clarkson University argued the specimen was possibly from a sheep, not a dog. No brain labeled Hans Delbruck was found, but there was an Abbey...someone. Regardless, police told local news outlets there was little to fear. The nine brains are believed to have been part of a collection for educational or research purposes and no criminal activity, other than littering, is suspected.

Blatter Out Sepp Blatter resigned this past Tuesday. Ding, dong. The son of a witch is gone. If you don’t know who Sepp Blatter is, you’ve not been watching much news coverage this week. Blatter had served as the president of the Federation Internationale Football Association (FIFA), the international governing body for the world’s most popular sport, since June of 1998. Fourteen FIFA officials were arrested in Switzerland last Wednesday after the Federal Bureau of Investigation brought charges of bribery and corruption against them. The charges allege widespread corruption in FIFA going back two decades and involving rigged bids for the right to host World Cup competitions, as well as marketing and broadcast deals. Blatter has not yet been indicted, but the FBI investigation has gotten as high as FIFA second-in-command Jerome Valcke. Valcke was allegedly involved in the distribution of a $10

million payment from South Africa to North/Central American/Caribbean soccer figure Jack Warner. The payment is believed to be a bribe in return

for Warner’s support in getting South Africa selected to host the 2010 World Cup… …The FBI charges include racketeering, wire fraud and money

laundering conspiracy. In addition to senior FIFA officials, the Feds are targeting sports-marketing executives from the U.S. and South America who are accused of paying

arrested a group of bankers involved in commodities fraud.” FIFA seems like an unlikely target for U.S. law enforcement, but Warner and several other indicted officials operated from offices in this country…

…U.S. law grants the Justice Department wide authority when it comes to bringing cases against foreign nationals living abroad. Most recently, prosecutors have used it repeatedly in international terrorism cases. Such cases can hinge on the slightest connection to the U.S., such as the use of American banks or internet service providers. Switzerland’s treaty with the U.S. gives the Swiss government the right to refuse extradition for more than $150 million in bribes tax crimes. But on matters of crimand kickbacks in exchange for inal law, the Swiss have agreed to broadcasting deals with major soc- turn accused perpetrators over for cer tournaments… prosecution in American courts… …Until Tuesday’s surprise announcement, it looked like Blatter would somehow avoid close scrutiny. Despite the 14 arrests, he was somehow re-elected as FIFA president last Friday. He was already under pressure to resign, but said that doing so would be tantamount to an admission of guilt. So can we interpret Blatter’s resignation as a confession? Not likely. Blatter will be in ass-covering mode as the FBI continues to investigate the multi-billion dollar organization. Under FIFA by-laws, a special meeting (or “congress”) will be held no sooner than four months from now to select Blatter’s successor…

…Despite years of shadiness and admitted revenue of $5.7 billion from 2011 to 2014, FIFA under Blatter operated with little oversight or transparency. Executive salaries and resource allocations were kept under wraps. Policy decisions were made without debate or explanation. When FIFA convenes to pick a new president, the selection of Russia and Qatar to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups may be reversed. Who in their right mind would pick Qatar – with its 120-degree summer heat – to host football’s marquee event? An organization run by a crook with almost unlimited power and zero accountability. Expect major changes in FIFA under Blatter’s successor. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see the former FIFA president face charges in the coming months. There’s no way he was out of the loop on the bribes and kickbacks that Valcke and Warner negotiated…

…Comedian/host John Oliver, a Brit and serious footy fan, was shocked that the FBI took the lead role in exposing FIFA’s corruption. “I don’t know what I’m more surprised by: That FIFA officials were actually arrested, or that America was behind it,” Oliver said. “It took the country who cares the least — Mark Bedford about football to bring down the people who have been ruining it. That’s like finding out that Kesha ENIGMA

With the company’s new streaming service coming soon, the Department Of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission are allegedly looking into claims that Apple are pressuring major labels not to renew their licence with Spotify’s free tier service, hoping that the move would result in less competition for their upcoming service, which will be subscription only with no ‘freemium’ version. Ten Hits That Serve As the Epitome of the Classic Three Minute Pop Song The local oldies station plays many of my favorite songs, but too often they opt for the short versions. Just the other day, they spun "Lyin' Eyes" by the Eagles and left out the entire middle verse of the song.

to my oldies station, which would not even exist without the tradition of the three-minute pop song. After all, nearly every single in the fifties and early sixties adhered to the three minute limit. The Beatles themselves stuck to the format, even hitting the exact three minute mark with both "Penny Lane" and "The Fool on the Hill."

In most cases I appreciate short songs, but some just cannot be abbreviated without losing much of its soul. The full version of I understand that the tune is a bit "Lyin' Eyes," though it might take lengthy for a hit, but its middle the air time of two songs, must be verse is crucial to its theme. It is played in its entirety. "Rag Doll" by the Four Seasons Among the Jersey group's many pop hits, including "Big Man in Town" and "Silence Is Golden," this classic is the only one that lasts exactly three minutes.

"Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and the Young

While Mickey Dolenz did the vocals on most of the band's other hits, this one shines thanks to the beautiful British tenor of the late Davey Jones.

Neil Young supposedly wrote this tune in just a matter of minutes, but it almost certainly had to exceed the mere three it takes for the song to begin and end.

"Someone Else's Heart" by Squeeze "Hackensack" by Fountains of True fans who appreciate East Side Wayne Story for more than just Welcome Interstate Managers was "Tempted" will recognize this the group's biggest charting album underrated Chris Difford tune. because of "Stacy's Mom," but this nostalgic track that follows it on "One" by Three Dog Night the disc is a far superior effort. Harry Nillsson wrote the song, but these 60s-70s hit makers took it "Mozambique" by Bob Dylan much higher on the charts. This Latin-tinged love song is the highlight from Desire, the Bard's "Monday Monday" by the Mamas follow-up to the iconoclastic and Papas Blood on the Tracks. Darius Rucker He’s a little bit country. He’s a little bit rock and roll. He’s Darius Rucker. Rucker put on a solid set recently for the crowd at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park in Alpharetta, GA. It took a long time for his fans to see him as three opening acts took the stage and folks had already two and a half hours invested before the country crooner and former lead man of alt-rock darlings Hootie and the Blowfish took to the stage. The wait was apparently worth it for fans who got treated to a balanced set of not only country, but rock and even bluegrass (he finished the night with Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel”).

Of the 23 songs performed nine were covers. Of course a majority came from Rucker’s past as the lead of Hootie and the Blowfish but the crooner also covered Jerry Reid, the Black Crowes and a cool cover of “No Diggity” made famous initially by Blackstreet. To his credit he did wait until his sixth song before playing any covers. He started the night with “Lighter Up” off his number one album Southern Style that was released at the end of March. The album was well represented on the night as Rucker performed six songs from the album.

When the Dinosaurs Decided to Call It a Day The dinosaurs when phht... knuckle-bender. Getting any over 60 millions years ago. letter on paper required determination, stamina, and a And then, someone invented healthy breakfast. Today's the typewriter.

more often than not, my Apple keyboard either misses the strike, or forms the letter twice.

If, like yours truly, you're old and decrepit, and you're afflicted with osteoporosis or a receding hairline-as the case may be-, failing eyesight and/or hearing, then you'll remember the ruddy contraptions. Of course, the internet generation has no idea. When I was a kid, we had a German portable Adler. And when I say portable, I really should say transportable. Anyway, it was really a wonderful piece of German grundlich engineering. Solid and stolid, I suspect it was made of cast iron. With some lead in the bottom, for added gravitas. I know where my keyboards are for wimps. In The case was really nice, too: father got his hernia from. actual fact, fifty years on I still some sort of reinforced cardPlus, it was your regular strike the keys so hard that board, with an imitation fabric imprint, and one of those nice, hand-stitched leather, oblong handles on two swiveling eyelets that you only find on vintage suitcases these days. Typing (of course, we still typed letters in those days) was a feast, at least for the trained typist. Every time you ENIGMA

struck a letter, a little hammer would swing out, and just before it hit the paper, the machine would lift an inked cloth (not inappropriately called the ink ribbon) in the way of the hammer, so that the latter would not strike the paper directly but the ribbon instead, leaving on the paper a mark, with a nice little "tat" sound. If you were good, it would be a readable letter. If you were bad, or just feeble, it would leave a vague smudge. Anyway, lest you continue typing at the same spot, the machine would move the whole carriage one notch to the left, readying the paper for the next impact. The most fun was when you reached the margin (which you set with a little metal bracket on top of the carriage): the machine would ring a little warning bell. Ding! And that was when you got to do a real carriage return: there was a long lever on the left hand side of the carriage, which you would firmly flip inwards. And lo and behold: the carriage would slide all the way back to the right, and turn the paper one line up, making a wonderful whirring sound, and again ring that little bell. Ding! Mind

you: this again required determination and a firm hand. Any hesitation, and your carriage would come to a standstill halfway its journey. But by then, you probably already had moved the paper one line up. Problems, problems, problems. All this is to say that writing a document was an intellectual, a physical, and a tactile challenge and pleasure. There were downsides of course. Things would get really messy if you typed too fast, and the hammers would collide in mid-flight, and stay stuck. Or if the ink ribbon had to be changed in the middle of a document. Correcting typos was not easy. And if you wanted extra copies, you made carbon copies (that is what the cc. in your email comes from) by

inserting a carbon sheet in between two sheets of paper: Xeroxing was still a pretty expensive proposition. I remember when I started out in private law practice. You'd have a secretary (secretary was still a respectable trade back then) type out a brief, and then you'd revise it. And then she'd re-type it all over. And maybe even a second time if you still didn't like it. And then you'd send it to the client, and maybe he didn't like it either. You get my drift? It all was in a day's work and in the client's bill of course, so we didn't particularly worry, but can you imagine? Think of all the literature created on typewriters, until about thirty years ago. Try and picture say, John Steinbeck, struggling away at the Grapes of Wrath. The noise of the "tat, tat, tat,

ding, whir, ding, tat, tat, tat,... " and so on and so forth, for hundred of pages. And the rewriting. And then the editor's twenty page letter would come in, and off he'd go again, for re-typing umpteen dozens of pages, and maybe even the whole darn thing. The mind reels... You'd get a case of writer's block for less than that. I guess what I really want to say is that writing used to be a struggle, literally a struggle with matter. With the typewriter, with the paper. It exercised not only the mind, but also the body. On the other hand, we still had twenty-four hours in a day, back then.

a bit like MP3 versus vinyl. Playing an LP involved many steps that had to be performed with precision and in a specific order, before you could sit back in your chair and listen. And after twenty minutes, you'd have to get up to turn over the record. Now, you just tap a few keys on your keyboard, or rather, you tap the screen of your tablet or smartphone a few times, and Spotify, oops!, I mean Spotify速, starts playing any of the millions songs and tunes it has stored in its server farms somewhere. Convenient. You can feel asleep now without freaking out at the thought of your pick-up needle reaching the end of the record, and going plop... plop... plop... plop... while you're off to Never-Never Land.

Of course, we now have Microsoft Word, or should I say Microsoft Word 速, and it's all much more convenient. It's It' all so convenient.
