It’s Still “The Beautiful Game” I’ve recovered a bit from last Tuesday’s big surprise. It was an enormous shock when Sepp Blatter, who had reigned as the almost omnipotent head of the Federation Internationale Football Association (FIFA) since 1998, resigned. The FBI brought charges against Blatter’s right hand man, Jerome Valcke, several other FIFA officials and some “sports marketing representatives” on charges of racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy. While some feel the Department of Justice was overreaching a bit by rounding up foreign nationals attending a meeting in Switzerland, most true soccer fans were glad to see someone finally hold FIFA accountable for decades of shadiness…
intended to help victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake into his own private accounts. Warner, who is still a member of parliament in Trinidad and Tobago, remains arrogant and says he will reveal mountains of FIFA secrets and implicate Blatter. It’s a truly despicable mess and I don’t doubt for a minute that Blatter will eventually be directly linked to the worst of it… …FIFA sits in limbo while those who would seek to run the organization jockey for support during the four-month wait for the special “congress” when Blatter’s successor will be elected. The 2018 and 2022 World Cups, awarded to Russia and Qatar (almost certainly as the result of highdollar bribery) may also be rebid. The world’s biggest sport is in chaos on the international level. And that’s a good thing. FIFA was due for a wholesale clear-out and restructuring… and it took a scandal of this magnitude to make that happen. Soccer will survive and be better for all of this…
…Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. In the past week, some of the more sordid details of FIFA’s rampant corruption have come to light. Jack Warner, the former FIFA vice president and director of CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CO …Meanwhile, I have been NCACAF#cite_note-1> allegedly reminded of why this simple and diverted $750,000 in funds traditionally low-scoring sport is still “the beautiful game.” Last

Saturday, Barcelona defeated Juventus in Berlin to win the Champions League final. The Champions League is an annual tournament pitting Europe’s top professional teams against each other. The Spanish champions dismantled their Italian opponents, 3-1, in a match that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Barca ran circles around Juve and only a fantastic performance by Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon kept the match from being a blowout. Barcelona — with its South American attacking trio of Argentinian Lionel Messi, Uraguayan Luis Suarez and Brazilian Neymar – was completely dominant in the second half. Due to the odd distribution of “market pool” money, Juventus made 63 million euros for being Champions League runner-up, while Barcelona made 57.9 million euros for winning the final. The CL is the richest sporting event in the world, just as the World Cup is the biggest nonOlympic sporting event in the world…
game or its world championship, but the big money is in the men’s game… just like it is in U.S. pro basketball. The other big difference between the men’s World Cup and the Women’s World Cup is that the U.S. actually has a chance of winning the latter. Regardless of how the U.S. women do, the WWC is taking place in a bubble far away from the scandals that are rocking the men’s game…
…As I said before, football (or “soccer,” if you prefer… I use the words interchangeably) is an incredibly simple game. At its most basic level, all you need is a ball and a couple of makeshift goals. That’s why you see it being played in the streets of Brazil, in African fields and virtually everywhere else in the world. The Champions League is the richest professional sports tournament. The World Cup is the world’s most popular (non-Olympic) sporting event. All because the game is simple… until greed and corruption become a part of it. The FIFA scandal will pass… and …When I say “the World Cup,” I the organization itself will purge mean the men’s tournament. The its worst influences… Women’s World Cup is going on right now in Canada. I am not - Mark Bedford being dismissive of the women’s

Dear Rocco, Now that all the American Idol hoopla is over, I’m a little put off by the city of Chattanooga. That girl Lauren Alaina is not even from Chattanooga. She’s from Rossville, GA, and she sang at a restaurant in East Ridge – not Chattanooga. But we spend a lot of money and throw a party and parade for her costing the taxpayers money and stealing the spotlight from her hometown and the place where she did her singing. What’s your take on the whole American Idol thing? Oh yeah… she lost. SW

Dear Rocco, Who’s responsibility is it to take care of children? My sister and I argue about it all the time. I think parents are responsible for raising their kid and making sure they behave and act accordingly when in public. My sister thinks teachers should because they spend more waking moments with the kids during the school year than the parents and the parents did the hard part by bringing them into this world. Who do you think is right about this? Dinner is riding on your decision. TL
Dear Rocco, I just watched the movie “The Rat Pack” for the 20th time the other night. I just love that era and the antics of Sinatra, Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., etc. I wish those times were still around. Which members of the Rat Pack do you think you most relate to the best? Just wondering. PT

Buy Local Chattanooga, TN recently won “Best Town Ever” competition according to Outside magazine. That’s great. In fact, it’s dandy. While I live in this town most of the year, using it as a “home base” for my activities I’ve seen more than my share of rah-rah cheering around town but often don’t see those cheers put to actual use. For years I have seen bumper stickers that read, “Buy Local”. And sure, that’s great, but despite being nicknamed “gig city” thanks to one of the fastest citywide high speed internet and supposedly a haven for millennial entrepreneurs, I still see them lacking when it comes to putting their money where their mouth is
in one particular situation. Local farmers and other entrepreneurs are benefiting from local support, but there is one area were this support is sorely missing. Music. People like to talk about supporting what’s local but they rarely if ever put their money where their mouth is. For as long as I’ve lived around the Chattanooga area the support of local music is mediocre at best. Granted, it has come a long way from 30 years ago, but it is underwhelming. “Back in the day” it was a red flag to be a

local band. Most bands or aspiring musicians were relegated to playing dive bars where were offered either a bar tab and a meal and a small cut off the door to charity events where they were expected to play for free and get “all that exposure”. And if they played they were expected to play cover songs and original music was frowned upon. During the late ‘80s and early ‘90s local bands started to get an inkling of respect thanks in part to the now defunct 5013(c) Chattanooga Music Co-op that pushed for venues to book not only local bands but original bands. People may have forgotten that music clubs like the now defunct Yesterday’s would not book a local band. They had an unwritten rule that your band had to be from outside a 30-mile radius of the city and you had to play cover songs. During the late ‘80s and early ‘90s many local bands moved out of town in an attempt to get booked in
their hometown. Michelangelo’s back in the early ‘90s did a little to help local bands but like a lot of clubs to this day would only book a local band for mid-week and maybe as an opener for a bigger act on the weekends. They were however paid peanuts

A newly-released headset hopes to wake people up or calm them down by manipulating the electricity in their brain. The ‘Thync’ costs $299 and has just been released to the public. It provides “calm or energy on demand”, the
company says, by using “neurosignalling” to activate nerves and change people’s state of mind. It is a small, white plastic triangle that you tape to your forehead. Then you control it with your phone to send special zaps that either wake you up or calm you down. If you thought texting while driving was bad...wait until you accidentally send a ‘zap’ to your brain while you’re on the expressway. In addition to “calm” and “energy on demand” there is also a setting for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. AMSTERDAM - Matt Pritchard is part of a prank and stunt show called Dirty Sanchez. Think of it as a British version of Jackass. You can’t expect a lot of discretion from a man who gets punched, stabbed and mutilated for a living, but what he did on a private jet flight from Amsterdam to Nevada bordered on suicidal. After mixing prescription drugs with alcohol he proceeded to strip naked and urinate on fellow passenger Dolph Lundgren. In case you are not familiar with him: Dolph Lundgren is a 6-foot, 5-inch, 250 pound robot built in Sweden in 1957 who holds a master’s degree in chemical engineering and a 3rd degree black belt in Karate. He has beaten up the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Lee and Skeletor on the big screen as well
as a number of real people in martial arts competitions. You almost could not pick a worse person to pee on unless you found a Navy SEAL in the middle of a live fire exercise. But, that is exactly what Mr. Pritchard did. Instead of the flight crew having to remove him from the plane with a mop and several large trash bags, Pritchard apologized to Lundgren who actually shook his hand and told him not to worry about it. The glamorous, outspoken pig will receive the award at the evening ceremony from the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. The presentation will include a conversation with veteran women’s rights campaigner Gloria Steinem and a 20-minute video retrospective of Miss Piggy’s career. “Moi is thrilled, but frankly, not surprised to be receiving this Sackler Center First Award,” Miss Piggy said in a statement. “It is truly wonderful to be celebrated and share this honor with fellow legends, role models, and pioneers of female fabulosity. PORTLAND, OR - In Portland’s hot real estate market where some homes are getting dozens of offers and bidding wars have sent prices skyrocketing, one buyer found a way to stand out among the rest: Offer free pizza every month for life. Donna DiNicola, owner of DiNicola’s Italian Restaurant in southeast Portland, might have been joking when she offered the pizza, but it worked. Her offer for a 900 square foot (83.6 sq meter) house in southeast Portland for her 23-year-old son was accepted. “It was really a joke,” she said. “I swear to you I did not know that made it into the paperwork.” DiNicola, who has been in business for 38 years, saw the Portland market heating up and encouraged her two sons to start looking. “I thought, well time is ticking and we’ve got to get into this market,” she said, adding the house was perfect even though it

was at the top of their price range after offering $275,000 and two months of free rent for the sellers. “Donna’s offer was just so compelling and the fact that she offered 60 days of rent back for free, which is practically unheard of,” said Holly Marsh, the home seller. “And then the pizza part was just hilarious. It just goes to show they really did something to stand out among the offers.” Marsh, who has a 5-month-old baby and a son turning four on Thursday, said they might just take up that pizza offer for their son’s birthday dinner. Marsh, who designs and sews baby items locally, said the family decided to sell after outgrowing their Portland home. The housing market in Portland is exploding as more people flock to the area thanks to national top 10 lists and shows like Portlandia. “Everything’s going pending in a couple days. Almost everything’s getting multiple offers,” said Nathaniel Bachelder, Urban Nest Realty listing agent for the loosely dubbed “pizza house.” He added housing inventory for March and April was less than two months. DiNicola said the minute they walked into the house for her son they knew it was the one. “We just went ‘wow’,” she said, adding she is thrilled to share her pizza with Marsh and her family. “They can have whatever they want.”

Buy Local Continued from page 9 handfuls of venues. Places like Warehouse Billiards were a great haven for not only local, but also original music as well. And local bands weren’t relegated to Tuesday or Wednesday night music of all genres – and quite honestly evenly distributed. The Warehouse mixed original with a cover band from time to time with a majority of talent being local. They had no budget to book national acts but on occasion one would fall in their lap like Brother Cane. The week their big single debuted they played Chattanooga opening for local band Running Live and packed out the place. The A&R rep from Virgin Records showed up a month earlier at the venue after talking to one of the radio stations and asked for Brother Cane to be put in front of a popular local for the nominal fee of $100.
It worked like a charm. The single “Got No Shame” climbed the charts rapidly and the band was very popular for a few years before dropping off the radar by the end of the decade. As the ‘90s went by you had more and more music venues pop up like the old Sand Bar that had been around since the early ‘80s but was only booking blues cover bands until 1992 and places like The Bay, Lizard Lounge and countless others come and go. People also forget that Riverbend wasn’t always welcoming to local bands. 37 Targets, winner of the MTV Basement Tapes back in ’87 had the plug pulled literally pulled on them in what turned out to be their last Chattanooga performance until the obligatory reunion show ten years later. They were also only paid mini-

All songs were original minus two covers and were just as good as anything on the radio if not better. Their only crime is that they are a “local band”. From a live standpoint they are great, but from a marketability aspect I don’t know because I have never heard any of their recordings. Kidd is a fine vocal talent and is perfect for rock and roll. Her vocal style is somewhat reminiscent of Deborah Harry, as she doesn’t demand her vocals to be the center-point of the band but a compliment to the music. It is a fine tuned instrument unto itself. It’s too bad I didn’t pay any attention to them sooner. It’s too bad that no one else for the most part has paid much attention to this band. They
don’t know what they’re missing. And while many people were at Riverbend Sunday to see Leon Russell and Merle Haggard Ii came to see The Unsatisfied. On my way into the festival I figured out the last time I had seen Eric Scealf and his band of mischief makers was way back in 1999 at The Bay. It was weird to think about that and I wonder how many people like myself have taken the band for granted and missed out on seeing the show. I like a majority of the town have taken for granted Eric and The Unsatisfied. They are quickly approaching their 30th anniversary. And we’re talking 30 years uninterrupted music, not take five or ten years off and do a few shows. These guys have been literal road warriors. Maybe that’s why they have been taken for granted. To the band’s credit they have all the original members with the excep-
