Pachyderm Gumbo …Jeb? The lesser Bush launched his presidential campaign this week… to the surprise of absolutely no one. The former Florida governor riffed In fair-to-middlin’ Spanish and told CNN that he considered himself “an introvert.” Here’s the thing: Thus far, the only exclamation point on Bush’s campaign is the one on his logo, a new logo totally omits the candidate’s famous surname… …Thus far, however, the punctuation mark on the logo is the only exclamation point on the Jebster’s candidacy. Calling Bush III “introverted” is an understatement. He is so low-key that he seems to be sleepwaking sometime. His platform is predictably regurgitated. Jeb supports the oldschool trickle-down economic policies that have failed since his dad was Ronnie Reagan’s wingman. He jumped on board with his brother’s proposal to privatize Social Security, a move that would have decimated the safety net that keeps so many of his home staters

from becoming destitute... …Since he left the governor’s office in 2007, Bush has engaged in several rather shady business deals. He cre-

ated a multi-million dollar offshore fund that functions as a de facto tax haven for his wealthy investors. He sits on the board of a company that was found to have defrauded investors out of millions of dollars. He has leveraged the surname he won’t put on his campaign logo to reap millions for himself. Dear Rocco, Now that all the American Idol hoopla is over, I’m a little put off by the city of Chattanooga. That girl Lauren Alaina is not even from Chattanooga. She’s from Rossville, GA, and she sang at a restaurant in East Ridge – not Chattanooga. But we spend a lot of money and throw a party and parade for her costing the taxpayers money and stealing the spotlight from her hometown and the place where she did her singing. What’s your take on the whole American Idol thing? Oh yeah… she lost. SW

Dear Rocco, Who’s responsibility is it to take care of children? My sister and I argue about it all the time. I think parents are responsible for raising their kid and making sure they behave and act accordingly when in public. My sister thinks teachers should because they spend more waking moments with the kids during the school year than the parents and the parents did the hard part by bringing them into this world. Who do you think is right about this? Dinner is riding on your decision. TL

Dear Rocco, I just watched the movie “The Rat Pack” for the 20th time the other night. I just love that era and the antics of Sinatra, Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., etc. I wish those times were still around. Which members of the Rat Pack do you think you most relate to the best? Just wondering. PT

This means, by definition, the jurors in Tsarnaev's case were not representative of the community as a whole, since even one juror's opposition could have eliminated capital punishment as an option. This is a bizarre outcome in a system that is supposed to reflect the community's values.

sentences. If given life, Tsarnaev would have had decades to reflect on the horror he inflicted and to realize the emptiness of what he thought was his cause. Instead, the death penalty - when implemented under the required standards of humane treatment merely punishes the criminal's survivors, who have to live with the spectacle and the knowledge of how their family member was put to death by the state.

was once a partisan issue, as it has been only for limited periods, it is not now. Not only did every Democrat in the state's unicameral legislature vote to eliminate the death penalty, so did a large portion, though not a majority, of Republicans. As many news outlets noted, Nebraska is the first strongly conservative state to abolish the death penalty since North Dakota did so in 1973. Nebraska was one of 14 states to introduce legislation banning the death penalty so far this year; nine of those bills are still at least technically active. Many states that have not formally banned the death penalty have let it fall into effective disuse. Others have struggled to obtain the drugs necessary for lethal injections. While conservative politicians who oppose capital punishment have used mounting costs, religious objections or examples of wrongful convictions to justify their stance, the truth is that the partisan divide is crumbling on this issue. Although 63 percent of Americans still support the death

penalty in murder convictions according to the most recent Gallup poll (2), the practice is increasingly striking lawmakers of both parties as expensive and ineffective.

ENIGMA

The emptiness of the death penalty as a criminal justice measure is why so many Democratic jurisdictions, and now Nebraska, have abandoned it. It is also why its continued use in this country lumps us with oppressive systems and societies whose standards of justice are best described as medieval. YONGXING, China (UPI) - Police in China released CCTV video of a drunken man posing as an officer in an attempt to secure the release of a friend, who turned out not to be in custody. Investigators said the man came into the Yongxing police station in Zhejiang Province June 1 shortly after 21 people were arrested in an illegal gambling sting and claimed to be a police officer from Chengdu. Officials

said the man, who smelled strongly of alcohol, told the Yongxing officers he was looking for one of the suspects arrested in the sting to transport him to another facility. However, police were suspicious of the man’s story and he eventually admitted he was posing as an officer in an attempt to have his friend released from custody. The man, who said he learned police procedures when he previously worked as a police assistant, admitted to his deception in court and was jailed for five

VERO BEACH, FL - There is a lot to be said for a little peace and quiet. Especially when you have a neighbor who just will not shut up with her constant...laundry? The rinsing, the spinning, the folding. Eventually there is only one thing left to do. Kidnapping. A Vero Beach, Florida man is accused of abducting a neighbor after he claimed the woman and her husband were being too loud in their laundry room. Authorities with the Vero Beach Police Department said Leon Thurston, 61, entered the laundry room of Jessica Scoville’s home with a black baton and a handgun. Investigators said Scoville’s husband, David Scoville, was hit twice with the baton before Thurston grabbed Jessica Scoville by the wrist and took her from the home. David Scoville then called police for help. A search was launched for Jessica, when she flagged down police near Charles Park about 7:30 a.m. Thurston was taken into custody, and officials said a gun was found in his pants. Jessica Scoville told authorities she asked Thurston to use a restroom and was able to get away and find help. Thurston faces numerous charges, including armed burglary, aggravated battery and kidnapping.

MEDICAL DEBT NO 1 CAUSE OF FILING FOR BANKRUPTCY Medical debt is the leading cause of filing for bankruptcy in the United States. Medical debt can be accrued in a number of ways, but is most often due to a lack of proper health insurance or unforeseen medical conditions and emergencies that are not adequately covered by insurance policies. With the advent of the Affordable Care Act many people are hoping that this trend will not continue, but as of right now it remains a very real and pressing concern for millions of Americans, many of whom are faced with overwhelming debt and unsure where to turn.

their problem. These debts come in the form of unexpected emergency room visits, which can be expensive even if a person has health insurance and are prohibitively so if the person does not. They also come in the form of dental work, which is a separate kind of insurance not generally covered by basic health plans. Dental work can easily run into the thousands of dollars, and is the kind of work that, when needed, is absolutely needed ASAP.

Another huge factor in outstanding medical debt that gives people thoughts of filing for bankruptcy is the out-of-pocket costs of prescription medications. Reasons for Medical Debt Prescription drugs can cost an A recent study showed that 62% of arm and a leg, and are notorioushouseholds facing major debt ly difficult to get covered under cited medical debt as a big part of typical health insurance rocketing

debt are generally related to obesity and to the effects of age, and those suffering from such conditions and the associated debts are filing for bankruptcy at an increasing rate. Another worrying statistic in the study is that households already saddled with medical debt are less likely to seek treatment when needed, wishing to avoid further debt burden and filing for bankruptcy. In addition, even after filing for bankruptcy, which can clear giant chunks of unsecured debt, many people are afraid to go in for new treatment, since they likely would still not have proper insurance and would not be able to dis-

charge new medical debt for several years after the initial discharge. 1.7 million people will be filing for bankruptcy due to medical debt this year, the study estimates. Luckily the protections offered by filing for bankruptcy are strong and able to discharge most of the debts incurred by those suffering from poor health or accidents but the larger issue is that poor health and accidents are a reality of life, and it feels like something is inherently wrong when a system fails to account for these realities in a meaningful way.

He said his attorney fee award fell well short of the $2.4 million in legal fees that was sought from the Corona, California-based Monster Energy Co., but it was still sizeable enough that the band will come out ahead by more than $532,000 above its reasonable costs. set to bring laughter to autumn as “John Cleese & Eric Idle: Together Again At Last … For The Very First Time” lays down an October routing beginning in Sarasota, Fla., and including stops in Atlanta, Savannah, Miami and Charlotte. According to the tour’s website, Cleese and Idle “will blend scripted and improvised material with storytelling, musical numbers, exclusive footage, aquatic juggling and extended audience Q&A.” That doesn’t really tell you if audiences will be subjected to dead parrots, some wickedly good “nudge, nudge” or even a visit from Stig O’Tracy, but one can always look on the bright side of life. …Nashville stars, friends and fans remembered longtime Grand Ole Opry member Jim Ed Brown for his faith and friendships at a music-filled memorial service Monday in Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

Paper Gods is the name of the 14th studio album by the group that took its name from a character in Roger Vadim’s 1968 epic sex-and-scifi flick, “Barbarella.” Recording in London with producers Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Josh Blair and British singer/songwriter Mr. Hudson, Paper Gods features special guests Janelle Monáe, who appears on the disc’s first single – “Pressure Off.”

…Seeing Smash Mouth this summer? Then remember that bread is for eating and making sandwiches and not for throwing at the band’s lead singer. Otherwise you just might witness a scene similar to what happened in Fort Collins, Colo. It probably wasn’t the best of days for Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell. Audience members threw slices of bread at the singer during the band’s Sunday performance at the Taste Of Fort Collins festival. Evidently that resulted in Harwell yelling obscenities at the crowd, according to the Coloradoan which reports the frontman was “subdued by a security guard” and that he walked “Off of the stage ahead of the encore.” Why throw sliced bread? Turns out a festival vendor was giving the loaves away for free. Evidently some fans didn’t have any empathy for someone having to work under conditions that included flying slices of bread. One person tweeted that she had “witnessed a grown man throw the biggest tantrum over bread” while another remarked that Harwell “was probably upset someone else didn’t throw ham and cheese to go with it.” ...Thousands of people are demanding refunds after the Midwest Urban Expo and Music Fest at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville did not deliver acts as promised. WAVE-TV reports organizers of the event Saturday night promised to feature several popular R&B performers, many of which fans say never appeared on stage. Performers listed included headliners The Isley Brothers, Johnny Gill, Kelly Price and Tom Browne. The KFC Yum! Center has issued a statement saying the festival experienced performance delays and apologized to fans. The station could not reach the concert promoter for

…Courtney Love has filed a cease and desist order against the makers of a film which alleges she was responsible for the death of husband and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. The Nirvana frontman passed away in April 1994, with the official cause of his death cited by police as suicide by a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. Despite this, the circumstances surrounding his passing has been one of much debate ever since. Taking its name from a lyric in Nirvana’s ‘Come As You Are’, the Benjamin Statler-directed Soaked In Bleach was released on June 11. However, as Stereogum reports, any cinemas showing the film will face legal action from Love and her legal team, who say that the film is defamatory. A brief summary from documents from Love and her legal team can be read below: “We demand that you immediately cease and desist from infringing on Ms Cobain’s rights in any manner

A false accusation of criminal behavior is defamatory per se under California Civil Code Section 45a, which entitles Ms Cobain to both actual and presumed damages.” A spokesperson for the film told Deadline that, “Courtney Love and her lawyers clearly don’t like that the film presents a compelling case for re-opening the investigation into Kurt’s death,” adding that Love should They “respect the First Amendment and let people decide for themselves.”

Artists Whose Solo Albums Top Anything By Their Original Band As if further proof were needed of the superiority of The Beatles, it is the only band whose members each went on to have very successful solo careers. John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the main songwriters, were obviously destined to continue to make hits after the breakup of the band, and George Harrison had already hinted at his penchant for penning a pop hit. Even drummer Ringo Starr, who had written just two of the band's songs, saw consistent chart success in the 70s.

Ben Gibbard His Former Lives from 2013, featuring songs like "Bigger than Love" and "Teardrop Windows," was somehow even better than any of the great releases he did with Death Cab for Cutie. Rhett Miller The Old 97's are the best alt-country band around, but Miller's poppier approach seems to be more appealing, especially on LPs such as The Instigator and The Dreamer. Pete Townsend His first three solo albums, especially Empty Glass and All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes, top all of the incredible stuff he did with his rock Hall of Fame band, The Who.

While the band's overall discography trumps that of the collective solo efforts, occasionally other artists have released individual album that outshine any work of their original group. For example, as good as Buffalo Springfield was in the late 60s, their stuff is not Christopher Owens nearly as enduring as the solo The former front man of the indie group Girls turned solo last year work of Neil Young. with A New Testament, a sharp but Here are ten other artists whose extremely pleasurable change in solo albums are better than any of musical direction. the records their group made.

Gerry Rafferty Although he hit the Top Ten with "Stuck in the Middle," the front man of Stealer's Wheel went all the way to number one with City to City after the band broke up.

Frank Black As a member of the rock group Pixies he was known as Black Francis, but as a solo artist his approach has been more toward country-rock or folk.

Scott Miller After establishing a loyal following with The V-Roy's, the alt-country Appalachianist created excellent records like Thus Always to Tyrants, Citation and Big Big World.

Conor Oberst He was the heart and soul of Bright Eyes, but last year's Upside Down Mountain proved that he could be even better without the guise of a band.

Jenny Lewis The leader of the folk-country tandem Rilo Kelly ventured forth alone, and since then she has made great discs like her latest one called The Voyager.

Paul Westerberg He made more hits with The Replacements, but subsequent solo material like Mono/Stereo show his maturity as a songwriter without the raucousness of a band.
