Flags and Guns The horrific murder of nine black Charleston churchgoers by admitted racist Dylann Storm Roof has left the nation stunned. When it was learned that Roof sat in a prayer meeting with his victims for about an hour before opening fire, it added another level of horror to the story. The nine victims – Rev. Clementa Pinckney, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Cynthia Hurd, Tywanza Sanders, Myra Thompson, Ethel Lee Lance, Rev. Daniel L. Simmons, Rev. Depayne Middleton-Doctor, and Susie Jackson – didn’t have a chance. The killer reloaded his .45 several times before fleeing Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church… …Thankfully, there was no long manhunt. Roof was apprehended in Shelby, North Carolina – about 245 miles from Charleston – approximately 14 hours after authorities began searching for him. He apparently confessed to the mass killing before “lawyering up.” Survivors of the shootings say Roof told them he “wanted to start a race war.” A website apparently created by Roof was filled with racist rants, includ-

ing a “manifesto” allegedly written by the 21-year-old. His social media presence features images of him in a jacket with Apartheid-era South African and Rhodesian flags on it. He also posed with several Confederate battle flags… …But if Roof wanted his cowardly actions to inspire a race war, his plan backfired. Thus far, Charleston has come together as a community to condemn the killings. Some family members of the victims have gone as far as to “forgive” the young man who ended their loved ones’ lives. There has also been a massive backlash against Confederate flags. A horribly ironic image of a rebel battle flag flying in front of lowered U.S. and South Carolina flags in Charleston inspired Governor Nikki Haley to call for an end to the statesanctioned display of the Confederate banner. Not long after that, Walmart decided it would stop selling Confederate flags and other items depicting that image. Other retailers followed. Kmart. Sears. Amazon. Valley Forge Flags. Dylann Roof’s legacy to other crazy racists? He has made it a lot harder for likeminded bigots to

buy rebel flags… …Unfortunately, it’s still alarmingly easy for homicidal racists and other dangerous types to buy firearms. Early reports stated that Roof received his murder weapon as a birthday present from his parents. Now it seems that he purchased the gun himself (with “birthday money”), despite a pending drug charge. Roof was arrested in late February at a Columbia shopping mall and charged with possessing Suboxone, a controlled substance typically used to treat heroin addiction. A Lexington County grand jury indicted him on a state drug charge. Federal law prohibits the sale of firearms to anyone who is “under indictment” for a felony, but Roof’s possession charge is a misdemeanor under South Carolina law… …A separate provision of federal law prohibits the sale of a gun to anyone who is “an unlawful user” of any controlled substance. A provision of the Code of Federal Regulations, which defines that term in the gun law, says habitual use can be inferred from evidence of recent use, exam-

ples of which, it says, include “a conviction for use or possession of a controlled substance within the past year,” or “multiple arrests for such offenses within the past 5 years.” Dylann Roof slipped through the cracks… with horrific results… …The adoption of universal background checks might or might not prevent further mass killings. But it’s a good idea anyway. The National Rifle Association’s thus-far-successful efforts to block those checks is a disgrace. Prohibiting the sale and publicsanctioned display of the Confederate flag may or may not make life a bit more miserable for racists. But it’s a good idea anyway. Despite all of the histrionics from alleged Confederate history buffs about how “their” flag isn’t racist, it has always triggered terrible memories among black Americans. It certainly doesn’t belong on a flagpole flying in the shadow of a state capitol. I’m sure all the dedicated racists will still be able to find rebel flag license plates and cigarette lighters…

I am going to be marrying the man of my dreams this August. Although his parents are wonderful, I’m a little concerned about the role that they still play in his life...particularly his mother. She still does my fiancés laundry, cooks his lunches daily, and cleans his house. What do you think? LK

Dear Rocco, My boyfriend and I have been together eight months. We love each other, and I see us spending our lives together. At least I did, until something he said a few days ago. Long story short, for the last five months he’s brought up marriage. Then a few days ago he informed me that he doesn’t want a wedding. When I offered a small ceremony for immediate family and friends, he balked and said he’s not even interested in a courthouse wedding. I asked if everything he’d said before was empty talk, and he said yes. He won’t give me any better explanation. Oh, and this was two days after we decided I’d be moving in with him, and he still wants me to live with him even after dropping this bomb! Everyone I’ve talked to, including my therapist, said the equivalent of WTF?!? SC

America's Crumbling Infrastructure and the Need for Infrastructure Asset Management Most airports, roads, bridges, and ports in the United States are nearing or at the end of their infrastructure life. Maintenance and repairs are badly needed to the point that piecemeal repairs aren't going to work anymore. Have you read about the recent Amtrak tragedy? According to Amy Rosen former member of the Amtrak Board of Directors, this derailment and ensuing accident should have been avoided. She said every political leader and taxpayer should be ashamed that this has happened in such an affluent country where funds can be made available and prioritized where it should be

OREM, Utah (UPI) - Officials at Utah Valley University said a staircase with a designated texting lane made famous in viral photos has received positive feedback from students. The staircase in the Oren school’s Student Life & Wellness Center is marked with separate lanes labeled “walk,” “run” and “text” to accommodate the different speeds of students, but officials said the benefits are more aesthetic than functional. “When

you have 18- to 24-year-olds walking on campus glued to their smartphones, you’re almost bound to run into someone somewhere; it’s the nature of the world we live in,” said Matt Bambrough, UVU’s creative director. “But that isn’t the reason we did it — we used that fact to engage our students, to catch their attention and to let them know we are aware of who they are and where they’re coming from. The design was meant for people to laugh at rather than a real attempt to direct traffic

flow.” Amy Grubbs, the school’s director for campus recreation, said students often cited staircases as being among the “gloomist” spots on campus. “The stairs were just lifeless before,” Grubbs told ABC News. “Students don’t necessarily abide by it but it’s funny to watch students push their friends over in the right lane as a joke if they’re texting.” “Other people don’t even see it because they’re so consumed in their phones,” she said. The text lane is reminiscent of a scheme in Chongquing, China, which saw

NEUSS, Germany (UPI) - German police said a helicopter crew searching for a reported “lifeless body” rescued a figure clad in “red pants” and “blue outerwear” — a Papa Smurf balloon. The District Police Rhein-Kreis Neuss said a train passenger

reported spotting the “lifeless body” out a window near Dusseldorf and officers responded to the area in a helicopter. The helicopter crew soon spotted a figure “wearing red pants, blue outerwear, a red cap and a white beard,” police said in a news release. The “body” turned out to be a partially deflated balloon in the shape of Papa Smurf, known in Germany as Papa Schlumpf. Police shared a photo of the rescued balloon buckled into the seat of a patrol car for safe transport back to police headquarters. Officers “took him to the police station, but have so far reached no relatives.” Police said the witness was “entirely justified” in making the emergency call, which they said could “potentially save lives under different circumstances.” WOODSTOCK, CT - There are high school pranks, and there are high school pranks. And then there are felonies. What this teen in Connecticut pulled off was closer to a Satanic ritual. A teen was arrested on charges of breach of peace after allegedly cutting up a dead cow and dumping the parts on school campus, police in Connecticut said. I guess he couldn’t get his hands on any smoke bombs. Woodstock police said that they have arrested 18-year-old Avery Blair Rollins, for cutting up the

cow that died after being hit by a car. The cow parts were found by students who have taken an exam in the school, around 9:00 a.m. The cow parts were found throughout the campus. The cow’s head was placed in the hoop of the basketball court and was still dripping blood while the legs were hidden in the ceiling tiles of the bathroom. The principal of the school said that Woodstock Academy has a policy of zero tolerance for cruelty to animals. Rollins was arrested and charged with breach of peace. He was booked into jail and released after posting $1,000 bail.

Checker Yellow Cabs shared a Facebook photo Adunga snapped of the ducks in his back seat. “As a human it is our responsibility to protect those animals, and nature and the environment,” he said. “I could do it again, too. Hawkins County Police said that they have arrested 33-year-old Johnny Allen Richards and 32year-old Erin Brooke Lawson, after they were accused of stabbing their next-door neighbor. The neighbor called the police to report loud noises coming from a nearby apartment. Police came and determined that the couple were making loud noises during sex. When the neighbor called the police for the second time, the couple went to his door and forced their way into the apartment (because the couple that breaks and enters together stays together). TOP SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS PAYDAY QUESTION - HOW DO I PAY MYSELF? Business owners are hard-working and dedicated. They put in probably sixty plus hours a week. As an S corporation, the owner can also make draws or distributions if the business is making a profit, but no tax is withheld from these payments and it is best to talk with a tax advisor before doing so. There are limitations as to the amounts that can be taken out of the business account in this manner. Hopefully this has answered the question of "How do I pay myself?" It can be tricky determining what the rules are regarding paying the owner of a small business. Consulting with a Certified Public Accountant is always a wise decision when setting up procedures for the organization.

Hey Man No doubt about it, Cheech and Chong are a “hit”. Yep, it’s easy to go down the path of easy humor with drug references but the two counter culture icons have lived a millions lives if only one. There is irony in their humor these days. drug humor like Lenny Bruce. Cheech and Chong are pioneers. They were able to build a large following for their unique sense of humor that contrary to popular belief was not only about drugs. Sure, recreational drug use was a part of the routine but a lot of the humor is derived from the interaction between two uniquely different personalities that happen to be friends.

Over the past 40-plus years many lines and catchphrases can be credited to the duo and still brings a smile to one’s face. Cheech and Chong are still took to the stage after smoking as evidenced in Tommy Chong’s wife Shelby And after all these years Atlanta recently. The duo did a small standup routine. Shelby has been Tommy’s opener in clubs for over 20 years. She uses her time on stage to drop a little drug humor to get the crowd pumped up for Tommy. Until a couple of years ago Tommy worked solo as the duo had not performed together since he late ‘80s. Time heals all wounds and the two are back at it tit for tat. After a telling a few jokes Shelby was joined on stage by Tommy and Cheech. A Q & A session took place that amounted to the duo being set up to deliver punch lines. with Tommy bringing his guitar with him. Many probably never knew in his formative years before he met Cheech Tommy played in an Elvis cover band. My how times have changed. What was once underground is now mainstream. Cheech and Chong’s humor is no longer cutting age but like their take on life is still original and while drug pop culture is a part of their act it’s not what defines them. It is laughter that is actually addictive. In keeping with the theme of the evening WAR performed their blend of Latin-infused
