Urban Kettling in the 21st Century The definition of kettling is to control large crowds within a limited area who are prevented from leaving. It's controversial because this tactic includes the forcible detention of both protestors and innocent bystanders. The purpose is to prevent the larger group from splintering into several groups which are more difficult capture and control. The restrictive tactic of kettling is to tire out the most violent and active protestors. It's been challenged as a human rights violation and upheld in several European courts. This tactic was utilized systematically in NYC during the Occupy Wall Street protests. Should there be a much greater sense of urgency to control the population, NYC's geography makes it ideal for a larger scale usage of kettling. NYC consists of five boroughs of which 4 are islands with limited bridge and tunnel connection, and surrounded by rivers that are easy
to patrol. Public transportation can be shutdown and vehicular traffic limited to law enforcement or emergency vehicles. Any movement would be only within the boroughs on foot or bike. Manhattan would be particularly vulnerable and isolated because it's a small island measuring only 13 miles long and 2 miles wide at its widest point at 14th Street. The reason for concern is that natural disasters are becoming more commonplace against an aging infrastructure. A big enough storm or close occurring series of regular storms can overwhelm the urban infrastructure resulting in a loss of utilities for an extended period. Now imagine what the municipal government may consider with a militarized law enforcement at the ready to maintain crowd control and prevent looting. Despite the misgivings of many, militarized law enforcement will not go away because politically there's
ENIGMA
too much invested in this new arrangement for it to be disbanded. The beast is unchained and can't be defanged. Local law enforcement will hold the line until reinforcements (a.k.a. the National Guard) arrive. For comparative purposes, Ferguson MO has a population of 21,000. Most NYC neighborhoods have significantly more residents than Ferguson. The difference is in NYC's population density, geography and law enforcement's ability to control movement and services. Urban lockdowns are far easier to apply in NYC because of greater urban density during the past 10-15 years. During a lockdown sophisticated urbanites can easily turn into urban jungle beasts forming large roving groups and impromptu urban warlords which sounds like the abandoned society in the cult classic film "Escape from New York" (1981). It sounds comical yet most

Americans in this highly mobile society are unaccustomed to extreme depravations and restrictive movements for any length of time. And unlike West African countries attempting to quarantine neighborhoods rife with the Ebola virus, reasonably well-paid law enforcement in the US can't be bribed for escape unlike the poorly paid West African troops. Additionally, an electronic noose can be applied to cut-off of communication services to mobiles, internet and the ability to pay for goods using credit cards. Besides, in a crisis the few, brave open establishments will not accept credit card payments even if their transaction devices work. A brief, mini-version of this happened recently in Detroit, a city with a demographic few people think or care about. Imagine how you might have felt if you were a minority and
poor in Detroit in the "wrong" neighborhood without water for an extended period. Even under the most ruthless developing world regimes the population at least has rolling utility blackouts and can survive. Unreasonable creditors may find legal issues or troubles, if they try to recover their own judgments; or they may drive judgment enforcers or contingency recovery lawyers nuts. Apocalypse Now? A strange phenomenon has begun in our solar system. Beginning from its outer edges and working toward the sun, planets are losing their rotation. Astronomers can’t understand why, but the earth is predicted to stop spinning in a couple of years. The results will be catastrophic. RANCHI, India (UPI) - An 18-yearold woman in India landed a loyal husband when she married a dog in a bid to rid herself of an “evil spell” identified by village elders. Mangli Munda, 18, who lives with her family in a Jharkland village, married a stray dog dubbed Sheru in a traditional Hindu ceremony as a means of lifting a curse that village elders said would cause the death of any man she married, Barcroft TV reported. “The village
elders told us that we should organize the wedding as soon as we can,” said the girl’s father, Sri Amnmunda. “We had to make sure that the evil spell is destroyed.” Munda said the ceremony was not exactly her dream wedding. “I am not happy with this marriage,” Munda said. However, she said she is happy the wedding — which is not legally binding — will allow her to search for a human husband. “Every girl dreams of marrying a prince,” she said. As she was driving away from the school, Jahnz started texting her friend. “I was running late for a business meeting, so I did a voice text. I looked down to make sure it was all right. The next thing I knew, I was looking up, there was white powder from the air bags deployed,” Jahnz said. Then, Jahnz realized that the guardrail pole went through the front of her truck, through her buttocks and into the back of her seat. Elizabeth firefighters rushed to the scene, where she says they used a saw to cut the front and back end of the pole before rushing her to the hospital. “I went into surgery and I lost count of the stitches after 40. They stitched me up inside too. I’m truly a miracle. They said if it gone just a little bit the other way I would have bled out,” Jahnz said. Jahnz was released after a four-day stay in the hospital. She will be able to get around with the help of a walker and is expected to make a full recovery. Jahnz says even though she was going 20 mph and looked down for only a split second, she has learned a lesson she will never forget.

ETTA MAY
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE ETTA MAY? “MINNIE PEARL WITH A MIGRAINE.” TO PUT IT SIMPLY, WHEN ETTA MAY TAKES THE STAGE, SHE IS THE REIGNING QUEEN OF SOUTHERN SASS. SHE REFLECTS “YOU KNOW YOU’RE GETTING FAT WHEN YOU SIT IN THE BATHTUB AND THE WATER IN THE TOILET RISES!”
SEPTEMBER 18-21
SPECIAL K
COMEDIAN/WRITER/RADIO PERSONALITY/ACTOR KARL "SPECIAL" K. DOUGLAS HOLDS IT DOWN DAILY ON THE RICKEY SMILEY MORNING SHOW; THE FUNNIEST AND FASTEST GROWING SYNDICATED RADIO MORNING SHOW IN THE COUNTRY.
SEPTEMBER 25-28
QUINN DAHLE
QUINN IS A SMART, CLEAN AND WITTY STANDUP COMIC WITH IMPECCABLE TIMING. HE HAS WORKED WITH SUCH NAMES AS ROBIN WILLIAMS, DREW CAREY, TIM ALLEN, DANE COOK, DANA CARVEY, NORM MCDONALD
OCTOBER 2-5
RICKY REYES
RICKY HITS THE STAGE LIKE A TECHNICIAN. HE USES THE MICROPHONE, STAGE, AND HIS VOICE LIKE AN F-14 FIGHTER PILOT; DROPPING HIS POINT OF VIEW LIKE SIDEWINDER AND SPARROW MISSILES ON UNSUSPECTING CROWDS, CAUSING EXPLOSIVE LAUGHTER AND COLLATERAL DAMAGE EVERYWHERE.GROWING UP IN A FAMILY OF FIVE KIDS, RICKY WORE A LOT OF HAND-ME-DOWNS. THIS MAY NOT SEEM UNUSUAL, BUT THE DIFFERENCE WAS THAT HE HAD FOUR SISTERS. RICKY HAS BEEN FEATURED ON COMEDY CENTRAL’S LOUNGE LIZARDS.

Guardians of the Galaxy PG-13 Brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own, escalate to all out war between the two establishments – until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine and for Mme. Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite, combine with his mysteriously delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even Mme. Mallory cannot ignore. At first Mme. Mallory’s culinary rival, she eventually recognizes Hassan’s gift as a chef and takes him under her wing. One of the boys becomes the most famous rock ‘n’ roll legend in the world, Drexel Hemsley, while the other, Ryan Wade, struggles to find balance between his love for music and trying to please his evangelist father and his devoted mother who have very different plans for his life in the ministry.

Although the phrase “rock and roll” had been around since the 1940s, Freed is generally given credit for making it popular. 11995555 Little Richard entered J&M Studios in New Orleans for a two day recording session. Things were not going well and during a break, Richard and his producer, Bumps Blackwell, went to the Dew Drop Inn. With few people there and an old upright piano, Richard started playing like crazy, singing loud, lewd and hamming it up. Blackwell was stunned... why couldn’t he record this? They went back to J&M with only fifteen minutes left in the session and “Tutti Fruiti, good booty” became “Tutti Fruiti, aw-rootie”. The song managed to make it into the US Top 20 early the following year, but a cover by Pat Boone over shadowed Richard’s version on the Pop chart. 11 995566 Elvis Presley made his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in front of 54 million TV viewers, which gave the program an 82.6 rating. Elvis sang “Don’t Be Cruel”, “Love Me Tender”, “Hound Dog” and “Ready Teddy” for host Charles Laughton who was filling in for Sullivan who was recovering from a recent car accident. The record topped out at #23 in the UK. well organized letter writing campaigns and petitions against Presley, but it was later brought to light that many of the signatures were fictitious or of deceased people. 11995577 Jerry Lee Lewis hits the number three position on the US record charts with “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”. The song had already been released by a handful of artists and Jerry Lee had been using it in his live act for several months. He would later recall, “I knew it was a hit when I recorded it.” 11996600 In Britain, the director of public prosecution is called upon to ban the American hit “Tell Laura I Love Her” by Ray Peterson. The song was being denounced in the press as likely to inspire a teenage “glorious death cult.” The story tells of a lovesick youngster who drives in a stock car race to win the hand of his sweetheart. He crashes and just before dying, groans out the words of the title. 11 996644 Rod Stewart cuts his first record, “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl”. Some have claimed that Charles Manson also applied, but he was in prison at the time and would not be paroled until March 21, 1967.

The Kids Are Alright Austin Mahone Headlines Youthcentric Concert
I attended Austin Mahone’s concert the other evening at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park in Alpharetta. My ears are still ringing. No, the music wasn’t that loud. It was the shrill screaming from thousands of tweens and teen girls in attendance. I was too young for Beatlemania, but I could only imagine. Wow, I’ve never heard anything so loud and I’ve been to KISS and a million other mega-shows over the years. They don’t compare to the sounds coming from these girls screaming for their hero. years ago. My friend Dewayne Gass aka “The Big Kahuna” wrote an article about him in this magazine about Austin being the “next Justin Bieber”. Just for the record I hate Justin Bieber. I am not a “Biebleiver”. What he meant in his review of Mahone was he was going to be a big teen sensation. Austin Mahone has lived up to Kahuna’s prediction.

It’s very much a show with dancers, a bright and colorful set without being overboard and music that is not only melodic, but catchy. Whether he’s in charge of his image or has handlers Mahone comes in head and shoulders above the rest. But hey, since Jerry has insisted he run the Cowboys instead of hiring a ‘real’ G.M., this team is all about historical franchise firsts. It was easy to understand why thousands upon thousands of season ticketholders sold their seats to the San Francisco faithful that gleefully traveled to Big D to support their team. smart thing to do, but mentally, the $100 million dollar man was in another time zone. He overthrew receivers. He underthrew receivers. He threw into tight coverage that made absolutely no sense. In crucial situations when it did make sense to hand the ball off to DeMarco Murray – like on San Francisco’s 2-yard line – he kept the ball and was sacked. That crucial mental error was one of many self-destructive moves Romo made in the first half. For Cowboy fans, Tony Romo was a basic no-show in however, they saw it coming, which the Cowboys 0-4 preseason. The is why AT&T Stadium was flush with team chose to protect his back. red. missing five key starters. DeMarco Murray, behind a young and strong offensive line, rushed for 118 yards. His performance marked the first time in 17 games the 49er had yielded a 100-yard rusher. The Cowboys young offensive line did a great job on its debut. Yes, they allowed four sacks but again, it was Romo’s brain and not his back that misfired in this game. His three consecutive interceptions in the first half cost Dallas the football game. After Murray’s opening minute fumble was returned 35 yards for a touchdown by cornerback Chris Culliver, the Cowboys proceeded to march the ball straight downfield on the depleted 49er defense to their 2-yard line. Instead of running the ball in, Romo decided to throw it. He got sacked and Dallas settled for a field goal. The following drive by the 49ers is why AT&T Stadium was why flushed red. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick was nothing short of brilliant in the 3-play, 80-yard march downfield
that resulted in a 29-yard TD pass to tight end Vernon Davis. Kaepernick’s tremendous ability to escape pressure was the key on this drive. A little over a minute late, the San Francisco QB tossed another touchdown to Davis after Romo had been intercepted by linebacker Patrick Willis who returned the ball to the Cowboys 2. With just about four and a half minutes left in the first quarter, the San Francisco offense had scored 14 points taking up a total of 1:34 seconds. Talk about laser-like focus on the field.
The Cowboys defense shut out the 49ers in the second half, but With Romo’s mental game in a state of flux, this contest was effectively over. Yes he led the team on two touchdown drives – the first came courtesy of Dwayne Harris’ brilliant 56-yard catch that would set up Murray’s 2-yard TD run – but those drives totaled nearly 10 minutes. Now those stats are great when you’re in a tight game. However, when you’re behind by 25 points at half, and need to really pile up some points quick, Romo, as the first half indicated, wasn’t going to be the man to accomplish Romo, the gift that kept on giving, the task. wasn’t finished. With the Cowboys assured to give the first openly gay football player a chance to play in a regular season game sometime in the next few weeks, why not give the suspended Rice a second chance as well in 2015. The All-Pro running back will be a model citizen this year, do all the right counseling moves to get his anger management under control and be ready for reinstatement. Let’s face it, if the other Ray in Baltimore – Lewis that is – can be cleared of double murder charges and go on to a Hall of Fame career, then Rice is more than deserving of another chance, only this time with a blue star on his helmet.

SAINTS GO MARCHING OUT OF ATLANTA WITH A LOSS

It was total pandemonium Sunday in Atlanta. The hated divisional rival New Orleans Saints were first on the long list of games for the Atlanta Falcons to attempt to regain their once lofty status as one of the leagues best. If you’ve never been to a Saints/Falcons game, it is total chaos. Before and after the game there is tailgating, partying and smack talking. Afterward it’s pretty much the same with a few first fights breaking out. It’s as if Mardi Gras moved to Atlanta for a day. Sunday was no different. Four hours before kickoff all parking spaces around the Georgia Dome sold out. People by the carload
were still coming in looking for places to park and enter the Dome. A few enterprising locals (who where being watched by the police) took in a bunch of cars and vans as NFL 2014 was about to begin.

Rex Ryan’s defense that rose to a top five unit last year in his first year had little answers. The running back by committee worked to perfection for Atlanta as they averaged almost five yards a carry. lead of the day. The Air Force flew high as Ryan hit his top four receivers for a minimum of 68 yards apiece. Julio Jones led Atlanta with 116 yards on seven catches. Levine Toilolo looked uneven in the tight end role vacated by the retirement of Tony Gonzalez. He’s a better blocker but missed three balls that came his way. They were catches that would have been automatic for Gonzalez. Toilolo did come up with a big touchdown catch to begin the second half surge for Atlanta. But enough cannot be said about Ryan who played like a man or fire or at least a chip on his shoulder. The six-year starter was only sacked once as the line held up
admirably even after top draft pick Jake Matthews left with an ankle sprain. Ryan besides throwing the ball ran as well. He proved doubters wrong as he was extremely mobile in the pocket extending plays with his feet and running up field. Ryan was actually the third leading rusher for the Falcons Sunday. The reworked defense shows promise. They gave up a lot of yards and argueably points. They were facing the highly potent Saints offense whose leader Drew Brees has thrown for over 5,000 yards the last couple of seasons. Brees threw for 333 yards and only one touchdown and a big interception in the end zone by Robert McClain. The defense held just enough to allow the offense to ENIGMA
catch up. Two early drives by the Saints deep in Atlanta territory only netted a pair of field goals – theoretically the difference in the game. And while the Saints did not punt in the first half the defense came to life in the second to force two punts. The defensive line did not really pressure Brees that often and one sack they did get was nullified by a penalty. And this gives more credit to second-year corners McClain and Alford who kept Jimmy Graham intact most of the game. He had a number of catches (8) but did no real harm and was kept out of the end zone. The secondary only gave up one scoring pass a three-yard pass to Brandin Cooks with 29 seconds to go in the half.

Kicker Matt Bryant was his usual perfect self. Since joining the team five years ago he has been clutch. Sunday was a prime example. The Atlanta kicker nailed field goals as time expired in the first half, the second half and in overtime to make the game one of the best in recent franchise history and definitely between this heated rivalry. ‘’It’s a good start,’’ said Ryan. ‘’But it’s a long season.’’ The Falcons take to the road this Sunday. They will travel northward to face the Cincinnati Bengals. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm and will be aired on CBS.
