Killing Them Not So Softly Frequently, in first world countries across the globe, I hear, "It's about Americans and their love of guns." That is an oft donned and well-worn conviction. It is intuitive and it makes sense but for a mother of four (17, 13, 9 and 6) who killed her two middle children via torture and suffocation because they tortured and raped the youngest child. Then, there was the 13 year-old girl who attempted to kill her mother twice by spiking her drinks with bleach for taking her I-phone away from her. Or, the 12 year-old boy who, after a year of planning, emptied a bottle of pink pills into himself from his mother's medicine cabinet and took a steak knife to the playground and stabbed a 9 year-old boy in the back multiple times to his death because according to reports, "I'm a bad boy". And finally, there is the incident where three young teenage girls invited a third over for a sleepover; took her into the woods and attempted to beat her to death in an attempt to invoke an urban myth called slender man. Weird huh? Tragically, these incidents are not near as weird and aberrant as they should be and not one gun in the bunch of them. I know what you're thinking. Anyone can stack the facts to suit their purposes and clearly I have. I did not mention one case of gun violence and we all know that Americans are gun-loving, toting and firing people. Still, these nongun incidents are real and by no means stand-alone. I submit the problem is not a gun loving society. The Canadians adore their guns. I suggest the problem is an overall violence problem which is rooted in several things; none of which anyone wants to talk about. It is a messy congealment of

I leave you with those who are last on everyone's list. The weak and the disenfranchised kids who take the abuse day after day; it is they who bring the disruption. With the breaking of the last straw, these kids bring disruption with weapons in a backpack or the poverty, ignorance, immaturity superhuman strength born when and entitlement. While it is never just one of those things, it is always a combination of two or more. My stated menaces are in no way new or exclusive to the United States but America is something which the rest of the world is not; young. There are many newly boundaried countries in Eastern Europe and Africa but the people who live there and their respective cultures are not new. Although the land mass of the United States was stolen from an indigenous people, those people no longer represent a majority share of the population nor the culture. If you accept my premises, I think it quickly becomes clear what the issue is in the United States. We are running on school yard rules. The scale of economy is being determined by the affluent kids whose parents haven't decided which private school to try next because they have been kicked out of all of those they know. The bullies whose home lives are less than enviable use any weapons available to taunt the weak and disenfranchised. The mean girls define who is fit and who isn't; hoping all the while no one looks too closely at them. The nondescript kids, who play while knowing what is going and knowing that it is wrong, choose to leave those who are not them to their plight lest it become theirs despite the obvious truth. The obvious truth is they are the majority population and if they chose to stop the madness they have the numbers to enforce it. They fail to realize eventually their turn always comes; one by one. the adrenaline of flight converts to fight. While the other kids bring the pain; it is these kids (these children of any age) who bring the tragedy. It's well past time for the yard monitor to intervene.

Pre-Debate Political Gumbo Once again, the nature of our deadline has conspired against me. The second Republican primary debate goes down tomorrow night at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. But I’ve got to conjure up some column inches tonight. So I’ll do a little pre-game for the debate, toss in some other political commentary, and create yet another batch of political gumbo. Here goes… …Unsurprisingly, the California debate is shaping up to be yet another episode of The Donald Trump Show. The comb-over candidate continues to lead in the polls, while former front-

runner Jeb Bush has slipped down to third place… after retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson. Trump’s continued dominance, Carson’s recent rise and Bush’s rapid free fall leave the other eight GOP debaters fighting for that one big sound bite that will push them into relevance… …Back to Trump for a bit. The media continues to paint him as an “outsider” because he is a political novice. He hasn’t been seeking donations because he’s loaded enough to fund his own campaign… so far. That may change when his primary rivals start making big media buys in Iowa, New Hampshire and else-

where. Can Trump’s personal bankroll keep up with Bush’s $100+ million in super-PAC money? Sure. Does Trump want to put a big dent in his net worth to continue his latest venture in reality television? Unlikely. A very wise man once told me: People don’t mind giving you money if you don’t look like you need it. I’m sure there are plenty of Americans who’ll cut a check to The Donald once he sets up the infrastructure required to process donations.

Only in America could a Caucasian billionaire manage to paint himself as outsider. Our country has been run by rich white guys since its inception… …Thus far, Trump has managed to stay atop the polls without offering any substantial glimpses into his policy positions. The pre-debate hype insists that he will offer up some ideas on foreign policy at the Reagan Library. Surely he

can’t be thinking of putting up more walls once he is elected and talks the Mexicans into building one along our southern border? Trump hasn’t said or done anything thus far to lead me to believe that he has paid more than cursory attention to world news events that don’t involve him. His foreign policy ideas are sure to be... interesting… …Ben Carson is also full of interesting ideas. And, as a black non-politician, he has a much stronger claim to the “outsider” label. He’s also a bit crazy. His calm, eloquent demeanor conceals a mind that often veers into frightening territory. In October 2014, Carson was added to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s extremist watch list because of his association with groups the SPLC considered extremist in nature, his remarks linking gays with pedophiles and his

comparison of health care and liberal government to slavery and totalitarianism. Dr. Ben is a soft-spoken physician with extreme views on numerous topics. I don’t see him winning the GOP nomination, but he’s making life rough for the bonsai of the Bush clan… …Those who’ve been thinking that all Jeb had to do was wait for an inevitable Trump flameout and position himself as a sane, grown-up, and (hopefully) electable option… are still waiting. Bush still seems to be strolling, rather than running, for president. It’s hard to inspire passion among voters when you don’t seem to have any of your own. Jeb seems smarter and quicker on his feet than Dubya, but that’s not a very high bar. So far he’s a single-digit poll performer who can’t seem to get out from under Trump’s shadow. OLOT, Spain - Police in a Spanish town are complaining of feeling the “effects of smoking something illegal” as a result of smelling seized marijuana stored at their station. USPAC, the union representing police officers in the northeastern town of Olot, said the 2,000 marijuana plants seized during the summer are being stored in locations including the underground parking lot and some police offices due to lack of space and the smell from the plants have been making officers ill. The union said the “unbearable smell” from the

allegedly fired his gun at his own police cruiser and burned it to stage a crime scene. Millis Police said they launched a manhunt Tuesday after an officer reported a white man in a dark pickup truck had fired shots at him while he was driving, causing his patrol car to spin around, crash into a tree and catch fire. However, Sgt. William Dwyer said investigators determined the officer’s own gun was used to shoot the holes in the police cruiser. “We have determined that the officer’s story was fabricated,” Dwyer told CNN. MILLIS, Mass. - Police in “Specifically that he fired shots at Massachusetts said an officer is his own cruiser as part of a plan to facing prosecution after he concoct a story that he was fired upon.” The officer was identified plants has caused “discomfort” and “headaches” in some officers, while others reported “feeling the effects of smoking something illegal.” “What will people who come to report incidents think when they enter the police stations and smell such a strong odor?” the union’s complaint said. The complaint called for specialized containers to be installed at the station to store the marijuana and other objects.

mation to emergency services, malicious destruction of property and unlawful discharge of a firearm. SAN BERNADINO, CA - There is a stereotype that women are bad drivers. That may or may not be true, but a woman who was caught on video abandoning her vehicle in the middle of the street, in the middle of traffic, while in motion, is not helping the reputation of women drivers in general. The California woman caused a bizarre accident on a busy road by jumping from her car and allowing it to roll into oncoming traffic. The woman who was accused of being drunk, was identified as 22-year-old Jasmine Lacey. She was seen on video abruptly stopping her car on the busy highway. The driver behind her, who caught the incident on his dashboard camera, narrowly avoided hitting the car. After getting out of her car, the woman started to casually walk along the road while her car continued to roll and finally veered into traffic. The car hit two SUVs before going off the road, and stopped when it hit two trees. Lacey was arrested and booked for DUI, but she was released after police said that there was insufficient evidence to support the charge. Apparently you don’t have to be drunk to abandon your vehicle in motion and let it wander by itself into oncoming traffic. It HELPS! But you don’t have to be. An Arizona homeowner foiled two teen burglars with a samurai sword after coming home early in the morning and finding them inside his house. One of them, a 16-yearold male, fled the scene. The homeowner used the sword, known as a katana, to detain the other teen, forcing him to wait on the couch until police arrived. Deputies took the 15-year-old into custody and later arrested the second teen. One of the teens showed deputies where he discarded a backpack used during the burglary. The backpack contained about $900 worth of items taken from the house. “They are fortunate that this case ended with them just being arrested and that they were not injured by the homeowner who came home to find them burglarizing his home,” a Pinal County sheriff said. If this story sounds familiar to regular readers, it is because almost the exact same thing happened a

couple of years ago. police in Waco, TX pulled a loaded handgun from a woman’s vagina after a traffic stop led to a drug bust, officials said. During the stop, officers found 2.7 grams of methamphetamine and arrested the driver. While being transported to jail, the suspect reportedly told an officer she had a Smith and Wesson .22caliber semiautomatic handgun lodged inside her vagina. A female officer who retrieved the gun reported that the weapon had a round chambered and a full magazine of bullets. The woman was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon. I would have to look it up, but if Texas is a concealed carry state she probably would have gotten away with it. You can’t get much more concealed than that. Or maybe it was a rape prevention device? DETROIT, MI - So a Detroit man was stabbed by his drunk father-in-law. Bizarre? Sort of. It is Detroit after all, and it was his father-in-law. How many fathers-in-law like their sons-in-law? But the reason he stabbed him... Police in Oakland County say a man was stabbed by his father-in-law after finding the 47-year-old man nude, in bed with his wife—the man’s own daughter. The 25-year-old man told police that he had arrived home and discovered his wife and her father completely nude, laying together in bed. The man woke up his fatherin-law and got into an altercation that continued outside of the home. That’s when the older man, since identified by police as Henry Allen Michael of Detroit, allegedly stabbed the younger man in the back with a knife. After the stabbing, Michael got into his son-inlaw’s vehicle and fled the scene. After interviewing the victim, deputies located his wife. The 24year-old woman told police that she and her father were out drinking and when she arrived back at the house, she passed out. She did not know what had happened until her husband woke her up, police said. The woman told police she had reason to believe that she was sexually assaulted. Michael, who was staying at the couple’s home after being released from prison (for robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon), was later arrested and is lodged at the Oakland County Jail on pending charges.

The Trump I Knew To a lot of Republicans, myself included, one of the nicest things you can say about someone is that he is "a stand-up guy." By this we mean somebody who takes his medicine along with his bows, doing what he knows is right even when it is not comfortable. Presumably it is a trait we would want to see in our party's presidential nominee (regardless of the "guy's" gender). So is the current GOP front-runner, Donald Trump, a stand-up guy?

dential candidate, and most assuredly he does not know (or, rather, remember) me. I never met Trump the reality TV star, or Trump the birther, or Trump the golf resort proprietor (a gig he is widely considered to be quite good at), or Trump the tabloid fixture as he went through a messy divorce in order to get together with his then-future-ex-wife Marla Maples. I did know - or at least I met Trump the football team owner.

when the NFL was in its off season. David Dixon, a businessman from New Orleans, conceived of the league and based its initial business model on securing TV rights and controlling spending. This original plan was quite plausible, based on an attempt to extend America's fast-growing infatuation with pro football through the summer baseball season. Donald Trump was the original owner of the New Jersey Generals, which he bought for $5 million, but sold out before the first season in 1983 in order to focus on his real estate business. Between the first and second seasons, Trump reacquired full ownership of the Generals, and promptly hired a

variety of veteran NFL players. The team then played two solid seasons, making it to the playoffs in both '84 and '85. But Trump had greater ambitions for the Generals. An earlier rival, the American Football League, had been absorbed into the NFL in the early 1970s, and the value of its franchises consequently soared. Trump sought to do the same for his Generals, who as the USFL's representative in the metro New York market and holder of some of its highest-profile player contracts would have been the likeliest team to survive a combination. But to force a merger, the USFL

first had to make itself a real competitor to the NFL, as the AFL had been. It tried to do this by shifting to a fall season, but promptly discovered that America has limited stadium capacity for pro football and that the TV networks of that era had limited interest in broadcasting what was still basically a minor league at the same time the big show was going on. So the USFL launched an antitrust suit against the NFL, accusing it of monopolizing the industry. I covered the case in Manhattan's federal court.

case was going to blow away the NFL, he promised. The case would be worth a fortune to him and his partners, but notably to him; if the Generals became an NFL team, the estimated value would have been approximately $70 million. Forbes estimates that the average franchise today is worth $2 billion.

The USFL did, in fact, win. Sort of. The jury found that the NFL indeed held a monopoly. But it rejected the USFL's additional claims. As a result, the court awarded the upstart league a single dollar in damages, which Trump testified at the trial, and under the damage rules of once that was out of the way, antitrust jurisprudence was he made himself freely and fre- tripled - to $3. quently available to us reporters in the courthouse Where was Trump on that fatecorridors. Infringement Of Government The choices we all make during ones lifetime reflect our basic nature. Whether we choose to make the right and correct decisions are based on ones parental influence, education, and experience. The only way the government should become involved in our individual choices concerning private matters is in the educational experience that we all go through. This is done by using our tax dollars toward furnishing readily available, accessible, reliable, and quality educational opportunities for all Americans. Falcons Rally and Hold On to Win Home Opener over Philly The Atlanta Falcons ushered in the Dan Quinn era Monday night with an exciting win over the Philadelphia Eagles 26-24 that ironically reminded many of the Mike Smith era.

into position for Bryant to recapture the dead. What ensued next was something that hasn’t been seen in Atlanta for many years. Defense.

Much like the past seven seasons the Falcons started quickly jumping to a 20-3 lead at the half only to find themselves trailing 24-23 late in the game. Matt Ryan and Matt Bryant did what Falcons fas were accustomed to seeing as the veteran signal caller rallied the troops hitting Julio Jones for a big 40yard pass play to get the team

That’s right. The defense of the Falcons bent but did not break. Sam Bradford who had been harried, hurried and battered around by the Atlanta defense in the first half found his groove in the second half leading the Eagles to three scores and a brief one point lead.

It looked as if Bradford was going to do it again but something happened that hadn’t happened in a long time. The Falcons defense held on third down and the Eagles were faced with a long, but makeable field goal. The kick was wide and the Georgia Dome erupted. There was still plenty of time left on the clock, however.

Atlanta was unable to keep the momentum going and was forced to punt. The Eagles took over and the Falcons pass rush which had been missing most of the second half reappeared. The newfound pass rush forced Bradford to rush his throw that was conveniently picked off and Matt Ryan and company were able to run out the clock to give Coach Dan Quinn his first win and an NFL head coach. “I think the thing we learned the most is that, umber one form the competitive side, that there are some terrific competitors here,” said the rookie coach. Julio Jones had a career game as he set the Flacons single game receiving yards record as well as catching two Matt Ryan throws for touchdowns. “Julio is an awesome player. He shows tht basically every time he steps on the field,” said the Atlanta QB. “He’s as good as it gets and we’re luck to have him”. Another big surprise besides the aggressive play of the defense was what appeared to be a reappearance of a running game. Rookie Tevin ENIGMA

Coleman gained 80 yards in his Falcons debut. “I thought our offensive line did a great job tonight and I thought we ran the ball really well,” said Ryan. “I’m really excited about the two young backs that we have. Tevin, for his first NFL game, went out there and he didn’t hesitate. He played really, really well. I thought when Devota (Freeman) was in there too, both those guys finished runs tonight. The 2015 Atlanta defense differs in many was from years past. They key word is aggression. run defense which has been non-existent for years was impressive as they held the NFL’s 2014 rushing leader, DeMarco Murray to a total of eight yards on nine carries. “The team is really close together now,” said cornerback Desmond Trufant about the difference in the Falcon defense. “We really believe in each other and believe in the system, so we’re out there battling for each other, and you can see it out there on the field,” The Atlanta Falcons take to the road this Sunday as they travel north to take on the New York Giants. Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm and the game will be aired on Fox.

Mariota and Titans Impress in Season Opener Way back in January two Heisman trophy winners faced off in the first round of the NCAA playoffs. On that particular night Marcus Mariota made quick work of Jameis Winston and the Florida State Seminoles as Winston lost his first and only game as a quarterback. Come April and the NFL draft and Winston was chosen first by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Mariota was selected next by the Tennessee Titans. Sunday’s season opener seems to be a marquee made for TV moment as the Buccaneers and the Titans faced off. It wasn’t much of a game as one of the rookie QBs tied an NFL record and the other…well, looked like a rookie. The final score was 4214. And I’ll give you a clue. It was just like last January. Mariota tied a record that was set back in 1961 as he threw for four touchdowns in his first NFL game, tying a record set by Fran Tarkington. It didn’t take the rookie from Oregon that long as he threw four touchdown passes in the first half and coach Ken Whisenhunt invoked the mercy rule and let backup Zach Mettenberger take over midway through the third quarter. “He did a great job of distributing the ball to tight ends, receives and the running backs and controlling the run game also,” said

Titans wide receiver Harry Douglas. “We couldn’t have asked for a better start,” said Titans cornerback Coty Sensabaugh. “The offense was rolling, No. 8 [Mariota) is special, I think everyone has seen it today. The kid is special.” Mariota threw only 16 passes on the day and had more touchdown passes than he did incomplete passes. “It was good, he did a nice job, he handled himself well, and hopefully we’ll clean up some of the things that stopped us from a couple of those things,” Whisenhunt said about Mariota’s performance. “He ran the offense, we had a lot of guys make play though. Kendall Wright had a great day, he ran the football effectively at time, Delanie Walker made some plays for us; I mean we had a lot of guys make plays and that’s what we’ve been doing in camp.” Whisenhunt liked what he saw out of the team against Tampa Bay. “I think we had a pretty confident group anyways, just based off what I’ve seen they way they work but it always validates the hard work that you put in it’s a good feeling when you work this hard, especially with all the negativity that’s been going for a while,” he said. “You work this hard and you see good results from that, so it helps.” ENIGMA

chise record for touchdown passes. “It means we’re 1-0,” he said. “It’s a good start for us but it’s just the first game. We have to continue to get better. I’m not focused on stats or that sort of thing.” “He’s a great quarterback,” running back Bishop Sankey said about his rookie quarterback. We all have to keep working, Coach [Ken Whisenhunt] told us to keep our heads down and working for the next week.”
